Was there warning of Italian earthquake?

The earthquake in central Italy — centered on the ancient town of L’Aquila — has killed at least 130 and leveled towns and villages. As quakes go, it wasn’t that large, somewhere between 5.8 and 6.3 on the Richter scale, but more than 50,000 are now homeless.

But this tidbit buried in a Reuters account is certain to cause aftershocks as well:

“Weeks before the disaster, an Italian scientist had predicted a major quake around L’Aquila, based on concentrations of radon gas found around seismically active areas.

Seismologist Gioacchino Giuliani, who lives in L’Aquila, was reported to police for “spreading alarm” and was forced to remove his findings from the Internet.

Civil Protection assured locals at the end of March that tremors being felt were “absolutely normal” for a seismic area.”

In another story, Reuters reports:

“Italy’s Civil Protection agency held a meeting of the Major Risks Committee, grouping scientists charged with assessing such risks, in L’Aquila on March 31 to reassure the townspeople.

“The tremors being felt by the population are part of a typical sequence … (which is) absolutely normal in a seismic area like the one around L’Aquila,” the agency said in a statement on the eve of that meeting.

It said it saw no reason for alarm but was nonetheless carrying out “continuous monitoring and attention.”

There is no truth to the rumor that “Gioacchino Giuliani” is actually Italian for “Al Gore.”

Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. 7 Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. 8 But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come.”

Okay, I’ll be the contrarian. Gioacchino Giuliani was the lone voice crying against the tyranny of groupthink. Al Gore is the leader of the voices of groupthink, marginalizing those who disagree.

Wait wait wait. I think I got that wrong. Gioacchino Giuliani looked at scientific data not comprehended by the established scientific community and tried to get them to reconsider their views. The establishment told him he was nuts and was inciting fear. All the stuff that looked bad was normal. Don’t worry, be happy.

Hmmm, which way to spin this…. (Tina Turner singing “What’s Truth Got To Do With It” playing in the background – )

Here’s THE earthquake to watch for:

“3 Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights in the day of battle. 4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. 5 You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. ”

WHINER…Did Rush tell you that?

Here is what Soros actually said. Taken from CNBC….

The US dollar will remain the world’s reserve currency for a while and it is probable that the world economy will start growing next year, with China, Brazil and India among the first to bounce back, billionaire investor and currencies expert George Soros told CNBC.
“I think the dollar is the dominant currency for a while to come. But in the long run I think it would be important that the US should be subject to the same discipline as the rest of the world,” Soros said in an interview after the G20 summit in London.

He also said his recent comments about Britain and the need for funds from the International Monetary Fund had been misreported. UK newspapers reported that Soros had said it was likely that the UK would go to the IMF to fund its budget deficit.

I always find it interesting to go to a source and see the paragraphs preceeding and succeeding the ones quoted. In the case of your post, the paragraph directly before was:

“Soros also said the U.S. dollar is under selling pressure and may eventually be replaced as a world reserve currency, possibly by the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights, a synthetic currency basket comprised of dollars, euros, yen and sterling.”

Rather gets back to the quote that started it all, “Soros sees end of dollar as world currency” (assuming one accepts a ‘world reserve currency’ is as close as we get).

Personally, I’m a bit dubious of a guy who runs hedge funds, makes money by betting against currencies and shelters his money from taxes with accounts in the Caribbean as an unbiased, analytical source.

jay, I know this is hard for someone who’s always looking to place blame, but Good Grief!!!! get a grip on reality, will ‘ya? Not every catastrophe is man-made.

A couple of earthquakes came about three and five hours before today’s Italian temblor — such foreshocks are not particularly unusual.

“We certainly see foreshocks,” Sipkin told LiveScience. “It’s not real common, but it’s not uncommon either.”

But while they’ve been observed before, they’re “not a good indicator that a big earthquake is coming,” Sipkin said. There has been only one documented instance where they were used to successfully predict a major earthquake — in China in the 1970s — and that was a circumstance where foreshocks were steadily increasing in severity and frequency.

Sam’s @ 9.19, since nobody was ever kind enough to patiently explain to you the difference between

a) A redneck bar owner selling monkey shirts bearing the likeness of Curious George with the caption “Obama for President” in order to ridicule an African-American running for the nation’s highest office

and

b) noticing that the previous President posessed a near-legendary lack of curiousness, and that his first name happens to be “George”

…I probably can’t help you either. But I’d be willing to try if you asked nicely.
