From the Anchorage Daily News:
“Gov. Sarah Palin and the head of the Alaska Republican Party said Thursday that Sen. Mark Begich should give his Senate seat up to a special election now that prosecutors have abandoned their case against Ted Stevens.
“Alaskans deserve to have a fair election not tainted by some announcement that one of the candidates was convicted fairly of seven felonies, when in fact it wasn’t a fair conviction,” Palin said in a Thursday interview with the Daily News.”
In Minnesota, Republican Norm Coleman has also called for a do-over in that state’s U.S. Senate race, in which Coleman apparently lost to comedian Al Franken. Personally, I think Coleman and Palin are right and we should go ahead and schedule new elections in both races …. right after we hold a do-over on the 2000 presidential race.

Maybe Ted Stevens can use his awesome super powers of personal responsibility and admit fault for his own downfall. Otherwise, if a mistake was made, they can have a do-over in 6 years.

GUNMAN ROBS MAN IN ATLANTA AIRPORT: By Tim Eberly
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Friday, April 03, 2009
“A New York traveler was robbed at gunpoint last month in a restroom stall at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, police reported.
Brian McManus, 49, was waiting for a connecting flight to Gulfport, Miss., when he went to the restroom, according to an Atlanta police report.
While McManus was seated in a stall, two men appeared “over the top of the stall” and demanded his wallet while pointing a silver handgun at him, the report said.
They took his wallet, which contained $300 in cash, and grabbed a shopping bag from a hook on the stall’s door. The bag contained three necklaces, valued at $120, that McManus had bought at an airport gift store, the report said.”

These Republicans are shameless. They only want a do-over when they lose, otherwise they want it to stand. I hope Coleman succeeds in his bid for a Supreme Court decision (expect it will take too long) because after the Florida fiasco of 2000 they will drop it like a hot potato. That’s the one any only decision they ever made that they hate to discuss pro or con and they have all said that they never want to see it set as precedence to any future proceedings. It will be a cold day in hell before they get involved in an elections results again.

What will Sarah do now that she has been upended by that old white guy, Newt. I mean, Newt is a strong force in the GOP base because he’s still a firm believer in the resurrection of the South and the South is where the Republican party’s roots are — not Alaska. The Republican party doesn’t care about Alaska or Sarah. The Republican party has moved on and it’s time for Sarah to do the same. She needs to be thinking about what Russia will do if she and her grass roots separationists up in Alaska ever manage to break away from the USA because they’ll be all alone and defenseless. She should be afraid, very afraid because they cannot escape on a bridge to nowhere.

It’s like I was saying the other day – we are too closely divided in this country, and more and more elections are being decided by courts, which I feel only builds on mistrust and polarization as the results are dragged out for months – it makes the voters emotions spike and it’s just not good (for lack of a better phrase).

Zylo,
Just wondering something. Why do you want Levi to shut up? Now, I’m not into this story so much, but I have read a couple of articles about them, and it seems like they are acting pretty responsible. I do not think it is a good plan for kids their age to marry simply because they have a baby. Unfortunately our bodies haven’t kept up with our culture and just because you are old enough to reproduce does not mean you are ready for having a baby in today’s world. It is very stressful, and they are lucky to have a supportive family – many others don’t.
But then again, for all I know he could be doing this for the money, who knows?

Well, our gov. apparently forgot that she called for Sen. Stevens to do the honorable thing and resign his seat while under indictment. She also called for Randy Ruedrich to be replaced as GOP/AK chairman and called him on his obvious corrupt and unethical behavior while working for Gov. Murkowski. Of course, Sarah’s used her office in much the same manner as Mr. Ruedrich.
The woman is a cartoon! She parades her family around touting their Alaska Native credentials, then slaps the Native community in the face time after time. She tells everyone ‘there’s too many Fed. strings attached to the stimulus money’. Her own party members in the legislature say she’s wrong on that score. Juneau has no senator representing their interests because the governor holds a grudge against the most qualified candidate. I could go on. The GOP needs to find an electable candidate to run against her next year. I’ll vote for the Democrat!

But I could consider a do-over in an election that was within some statistically-determined margin of error of various vote-counting methods. Say a half a percent or so. Whadda ya’ think, Bosch? Stop a bit of that litigation and creative lawyering?

HEADLINE/NY TIMES: Ruling Favors War Detainees …
By Charlie Savage
Washington: “A federal judge on Thursday ruled that some prisoners held by the U.S. military in Afghanistan have a constitutional right to challenge their imprisonment in U.S. civilian courts. That was a rebuke to a claim of unfettered executive power advanced by both the Bush and Obama administrations.”
My first question (and I thought newspaper people knew how to write) is why are these terrorists being held prisoner in U.S. civilian courts ……….
)?
But the important point is ………. is it possible Obama is violating the Constitution? According to this judge he is. Oh, woe is me !!!

Paul,
I really don’t have an opinion either way to be honest. As I said earlier, I don’t think it’s good.
I think elections now are pretty much a disgrace. The candidates spend more time trying to find out and get out as much bad information as possible on the other candidate and not talking about the issues – and guess what? The American people eat that up. The press eats it up. And it’s disgusting. Everybody automatically believes the bad information and nine times out of ten it’s either not true or highly misrepresented or half truths.
During the election, we had this discussion before, but I always said, it’s really about who you trust more as to who you vote for.
It’s funny that if you actually LOOK at alot of the acutal issues, the candidates aren’t THAT much different except in the traditional issues like abortion and taxes and the such, but they all want better education, healthcare, save the planet, yadayadayada – but no one EVER looks at their past voting history, or it’s completely distorted by the other side or misrepresented, etc. And very few people actualy read about a candidate from the candidate themselves.
And please don’t get me started on television ads.

Can you gimme an “AMEN” brother? (and can you send money, too?). You’ve nailed a lot of it. But even the voting record – which one would think would be a good indication – gets royally distorted. Just look at some of the posts here. Nuance or vote-specific reasons are completely disregarded.
Your comment about the people eating it up. Kinda goes along with we get the kind of government we deserve, eh? I still come back to term limits and public financing. Seems it would correct many ills.
Your point about going with your gut is similar to what I’ve written about voting for someone with whom you disagree but whom you think is honest, vs voting for someone with whom you disagree but whom you think is telling you what they have to to get elected.
So… what about television?

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warns that conservatives could leave the GOP and form a third party in 2012 if Republicans don’t do more to rein in government spending.
“If the Republicans can’t break out of being the right wing party of big government, then I think you would see a third party movement in 2012, Gingrich said during an address to students at the College of the Ozarks in Missouri.
Gingrich attacked President Barack Obama’s “monstrosity of a budget,” but acknowledged that Republicans are also to blame for the huge increase in federal spending, CNN reported.
“Remember, everything Obama’s doing, Bush started last year,” he said.
Could Newt the Nut really be onto something here?
