Should Notre Dame ‘disinvite’ Obama?

Notre Dame University has invited President Obama to deliver the commencement address this year, and Obama has accepted. That has outraged many on the right (some of whom are capable of going from zero to outrage faster than a speeding bullet.)

Newt Gingrich — he of the three wives — says on Twitter, that it’s “sad … since his policies are so anti catholic values. ” Katherine Jean Lopez of the National Review calls the invitation “shameful.”

“Last week the president of the United States perpetrated an assault on human dignity. No statements or press releases will undo what Notre Dame’s position in the eyes of the world is in response: “Doesn’t matter.” We’ve got THE ONE. So much for the One to whom the school’s namesake gave birth…. At Notre Dame, the administration there just made a choice. They took a giant step away from their identity as “Catholic.” They would rather be of this world than the one they supposedly exist to bring people toward.”

Right-wing Catholic groups have are trying to pressure Notre Dame to withdraw the invitation. “It is an outrage and a scandal that ‘Our Lady’s University,’ one of the premier Catholic universities in the United States, would bestow such an honor on President Obama given his clear support for policies and laws that directly contradict fundamental Catholic teachings on life and marriage,” states a petition at notredamescandal.com that claims to have collected almost 110,000 signatures.

One point to put it all in context: According to exit polls, Obama got 54 percent of the Catholic vote in November, compared to 45 percent for John McCain. That’s better than he did among the general populace.

They could find someone else to come lie to them-

What he said: “At the end of the day, the best way to bring our deficit down in the long run is not with a budget that continues the very same policies that have led us to narrow prosperity and massive debt. It’s with a budget that leads to broad economic growth by moving from an era of borrow-and-spend to one where we save and invest.”

This dude is detached from reality and a bald faced liar, why would you want to hear him speak?

Well, it’s just a shame this Obama wants to kill little baby stem cells. They shouldn’t let scientists use them. If they ain’t going to be used to make babys they need to give them a good Christian burial. It ain’t their fault people pick up all these diseases and want to use them to try and get a cure.

I don’t hold with the Catholics much on account of they worship idols and such, but the people that want Notre Dame to cancel Obama’s speaking invite are dead right on this one. He’s just a baby killer, is what he is. Just think how many god-fearing rednecks they could make with the cells and won’t never get a chance to because scientists want to kill them.

We need to make sure we put a stop to these scientists. We can start by not letting this Obama speak to anybody. When we get our Southren States of America we’ll put a stop to all this business of putting cells in test tubes. Women will be made to have babys the regler way, by doing You Know What. And when they get in the Fambly Way we’ll make it a law they have to have them. We can lock the women that try to have abortions and their Drs. up and throw away the key. We don’t beleive in killing anybody till they get old enough to get the Death Penalty.

Well, looks like golf is out for Saturday. Me and Jim Earl and Joe Bill was planning to get a round in down at Countryland Golf Club down near Cumming but we’d need hip boots to do it now. Have a good day everybody.

There is a myopia here that should scare anyone who ever voted for Newty-Newt or would do so in the future.

If Newty-Newt is willing to criticize President Obama for not being Catholic enough, with his marital track record – including adultery and desertion, imagine what he could blind himself to if he was ever again in a position of power.

(Not to mention the splendid irony that he takes on President Obama in a category he has so failed at and where President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama have so succeeded – a strong marriage.)

I’m not much interested in a politician’s personal life until he/she shows me I should be. When I see a person who lives in a glass house willing to throw stones willy nilly I wish for them the inevitable fall from their own hubris that they deserve.

RC gave us: He’s just a baby killer, is what he is.

For those who read this as pure parody, let me remind one and all that in the week before the election, in the AJC’s “Faith and Values” section, in the Houses of Worship listings, was a two-column wide advert whose headline read: “Barack Obama is 100% Pro-Abortion!”

don’t you love how tastefully this issue is framed? and how our complicit media go along with it being “pro-” or “anti-” abortion?

As if the real issue being determined by lawmakers wasn’t, in fact, whether it makes any sense whatsoever to criminalize this procedure?

Anyway, as to Obama winning 54% of the Catholic vote–I’m not surprised, but I didn’t realize this, so I guess I did learn something from this otherwise fairly pointless exercise.

There’s any number of amusing hypocrisies to point out here.

ONE: Obama has done nothing that’s “anti-Catholic” in any way. The bill he signed about stem-cell research affects embryos that would otherwise be destroyed. Zero religious conflict, no matter how hopelessly ignorant and science-hating your cult happens to be.

TWO: Notre Dame has no obligation to invite only “Catholic-friendly” speakers. Free speech, opposing viewpoints, yadda yadda.

THREE: American Catholics are not the monolithic slaves to Papal dogma that the Church would prefer. In order to function in society, most Catholics have to ignore or violate a large chunk of Church doctrine anyway, every day. A whole heckuva lotta Catholics voted for Obama, f’rinstance… and very few bought into the whole “Kerry shouldn’t receive Communion” nonsense back in ‘04.

But anywho……

With Notre Dame – as with any institute of higher learning – it will all boil down to – how mad will it make the big alumni donors. That’s their bottom line – who cares if the faculty or the students or whoever are in an uproar – it’s about the donors – they are the ones you don’t want to make mad.

I’m sure the President of Notre Dame along with it’s top administrators have been on the horn in the past few weeks asking their opinion — for theirs are the only ones they care about.

I am very disappointed that Notre Dame invited the President to be honored its commencement.

The Church’s teaching on abortion is quite clear – Abortion is “gravely contrary to moral law”. In the Church’s view life begins at conception. Procuring or facilitating (e.g. voting to fund abortion) is no different than murdering or paying for the murder of a ten year old child.

All of the President’s positions with regard to life issues are 180 degrees from those of the Church. Inviting him to be honored at Notre Dame’s commencement is no different than the NAACP inviting David Duke to give the keynote at its convention. At the very least it imparts a mixed message.

Jay points out that the President received a majority of the Catholic vote. Perhaps one of the reasons for this is that Catholics receive mixed messages on the importance of the Church’s teachings because of things like this.

DB, Gwinnettian, no not really. Taking the life of an innocent unborn baby is what? What is it, DB, Gwinnettian? Is it euthanasia? No, doesn’t fit the definition. Is it a fun sport? Nope.

There are two types of abortion. The type where the baby is an “unwanted” nuisance and the type where the mothers life is in grave danger. I can sympathise with the mothers life being in danger. I can not do so when women just want the “unwanted problem” out of their life.

Redneck Convert,

You delight in comparing abortion to the death penalty. In your own stupid way, you come out looking like a fool. A jury of peers decides who will die in a court of law when the death penalty is in play. When a child is aborted, it is often a teenage girl who made a bad mistake. She is confused, feels guilty has a sense of doing something terribly wrong.
There are 1.3M abortions performed in this country EVERY YEAR. That’s a pretty large city by some standards. All killed. 92% are done for “societal reasons”, that is, not wanted. This is only time in our country when a person is not charged with murder for taking a life. All in the name of “choice” and a convenient birth control method to take the life of someone you have created by irresponsibility. An easier method would be to just keep your legs together. No wonder Notre Dame doesn’t want Bozo to speak at their graduation. He represents the very essence of what is wrong with our society and society’s spin on the unborn.

Bush’s tax cuts for the wealthy should have never been allowed in the first place and it will take a lot of effort to overcome the damage from just that one failed Republican policy, much less all the others. Hey I’ve got an idea!

Let’s make abortions illegal!

That should solve the problem!

This satirical jab at conventional Republiconned thinking serves its purpose though. In general they are simply unwilling to deal with the vast and complicated challenges of a modern day world because the worst of them cannot be dragged out of their 1950s, and in some cases, 1850s mentality.

Even Nancy’s Just Say No had SOME minimal value to it, but today’s misnamed conservatives?

Arguably an utter failure. Across the board. Pick a topic. ANY topic.

But Why? How could this possibly have happened to an entire major political party in modern America? (And how is it that the other major party is only slightly more competent and repulsive?)

Because beginning in the 1980’s the easily led sheeple in the Republican “base” were duped into believing that Nixon/Agnew was an aberration. So in spite of the overwhelming evidence otherwise, they gravitated to the perverted, far-right lunatic fringe where ultimately a preemptive, misguided, mismanaged invasion and deadly occupation based on deception after lie after sophist “evidence” was deemed “conservative”. And patriotic.

Where science and the age of reason are a HUGE threat to their dogmatic, intransigent and now repudiated ideology of denial, obfuscation and lockstep foot-dragging.

Where basic respect, and even a modicum of decency and care, for our home – Planet Earth, our finite resources and our natural world are insignificant compared to the corporate profits of multinationals and a life of unenlightened, uncaring comfort.

Where unwarranted, McCarthy-like witch hunts have regained their popularity (as evidenced here by the plethora of inane and sophomoric references to commies, pinkos, socialists, Marxists, etc…).

Where basic respect for the law of the land and economic justice went out the window with Ollie North’s and Dick Cheney’s convenient lack of memory.

Where Christo-fascist frauds and TV charlatans are presented as trusted advisers to the heads of state.

And where, in all matters, the high road of moral integrity and ethical behavior are their providence alone.

But at (long?) last, the rest of the nation tires of trying to get these completely corrupted, ultra-bribeable and intransigent gangsters to pull their collective heads out of those southern cavities. And so finally realizes they have no other alternative but to throw them to the curb every other November.

And so we stand up to the thuggery and buffoonery of these self-righteous frauds and their collapsing “conservative” movement.

And guess what, neo-conned? That ain’t gonna change until you die off and are replaced by a younger, at least semi-lucid set of new and improved GOP gangsters…

Well, since you asked …. yes it does, but a “text taken out of context is no text”. Based on your reasoning there would be no discipline in school, no police, no judges, etc., etc.

Try these on:

Jesus:

“Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.
And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.”

Poor judgement was used in asking President Obama to speak at Notre Dame, but suck it up! You don’t uninvite anybody because there wasn’t enough thought put into the invitation, especially The President. Are all of the students and faculty at Notre Dame Catholic? Do all students and faculty have to vow to believe the Catholic faith? The answer is No! Notre Dame is as diverse as any other university, and they should continue to teach the Catholic faith for the Catholic population, but having President Obama speak, is not going to change the beliefs we have as Catholics, or the views of others who aren’t.We need to be good Christians, and not judge, but hold fast to our beliefs, and pray that morality prevails.

First off to the author, its the University of Notre Dame (not Notre Dame University).

Second Notre Dame is not all Catholics and it is not a seminary (although one is located on the campus). It seems like everyone is thinking it is a seminary, which is idiotic since females are allowed to attend. Notre Dame above all is a place for learning and growing. If we cannot even listen to those of opposing views, how can we ever really learn about what we believe in or grow in that faith?

The major problem I have with this debate is that these extreme Catholics only see the issue of abortion and no other issues. I completely agree that Obama’s view on a woman’s right to choose are completely against the Catholic faith, but we are forgetting his other policies and view that are completely in line with the church, such as service, healthcare and compassion for the poor and less fortunate.

Didn’t Jesus listen to all and treat those who were different from him with kindness and compassion? Shouldn’t we as Christians do the same?

I would be ashamed to say that I am a graduate of Notre Dame if the school disinvites President Obama. I feel it is a great honor for us that the President of the United States, the leader of the free world, chose to speak at my graduation when he could speak at pretty much any school in the country.

I just hope that my graduation isn’t ruined by some Catholic zealots trying to impose their views on the world forcefully instead of a sensible manner.

And by the way I am Catholic and pro-life.

Well, well. Here’s something to chew on ……… a big gang of moderate Democrats in the Senate are messing with “T T T’s” budget plan right now. Even “they” have the alternative you asked about! He’s so worried, he’s going up on the Hill to browbeat them today (take “Mr. Telepromper).

Let’s put it this way. Neither you (housewife) or I (lowly Corporal) are great economists ……… however, “T T T” has only one goal in mind …….. redistribute the wealth – at the point of a gun if necessary (tax laws one can be arrested for). That is his socialist (or worse) goal.

There are numerous better plans out there (some being developed by Republicans and some by Democrats with some common sense) who realize his plans/debt are going to be a disaster. Did you not read what the EU president said this morning? A lot of people outside the U.S. are truly worried about this guy.

Cut taxes! Change laws so U.S. Corporations will bring their business back to this country! That will create jobs so people can “work” for a living instead of having it “handed” to them.

Now, I could address each one of your other issues but it would fall on deaf ears so I won’t waste my time.

Whether Catholic or not (and I certainly am not) President Obama is not a life to be celebrated and emulated.

He has spread abortion (and thereby death of innocents) outside our borders and abdicated any moral authority by endorsing the creation, cloning, and killing of embryos.

Beyond that, once must truly wonder whether or not President Obama is a sociopath. Last night he spake that his budget would rtransion us from a “borrow and spend” nation to a “save and invest” nation. Since the nonpartisan (but appointed by Democrats) CBO estimates a $10 trillion increase in our nation debt at the hands of the Obama policies, how could anyone but A STONE-COLD LIAR SOCIOPATH make the “borrow and spend” to a “save and invest” transition staement? Corporal

March 25th, 2009

To Bishop Godzilla:

Well now ……………..

Since you mentioned it, Jesus was tolerant or non-tolerant depending on the siuation. I try to follow that lead.

1) He was “very” tolerant of sinners who were humble enough to sit down with Him for a meal and listen to His message.

He was “very” tolerant of His disciples (and even his family) who were often confused about His true mission on earth.

2) He was “very” intolerant with the Religious rulers of His day because they rejected Him. He called them “vipers”, “white-washed graves” and told them “you are of your father the devil”.

He was “very” intolerant with the money-changers who were desecrating His Father’s House, calmly took the time to “make a whip”, and then physically drove them away; turning over their tables and scattering their money.

3) The trouble with “most” liberal Christians is that they only want to see, preach, accept one side of Jesus. That won’t get it.

CANDIDATE #1 – Agrees with you on issue #1 and disagrees with you on issues #2 through #10

CANDIDATE #2 – Agrees with you on issue issues #2 through #10 and disagrees with you on issue #1

Are you or anyone else suppose to ignore the total record for one singular but important issue?

As do those who might actually read the Bible but who don’t comprehend any of it especailly when dealing with the least of his people, divorce, etc.

Mrs. Godzilla:

Short patrol …. I’m back:

1) Regarding your 12:46

“He who hath seen me has seen the Father”.

Now, you can refer to God as your “Mom” if you want to but Jesus referred to Him (and all the ladies in the Bible did also) as Father. I don’t know where you got that (I’m just being nice – I really do) but remember “Satan can disquise himself as an angel of light”. Be careful.

2) “Just where does Jesus throw his support behind the death penalty?”

Excellent, thought provoking question. I have an answer for you, however, our dialogue/question asking is NOT going to be “one way”.

I previously asked you three times “What part of Jesus’ “intolerance” do you not like?” and you refused to address it.

You answer that and I will happily respond to your question.

Of course, Jesus referred to God with a male pronoun. He was made in his image and likeness. Just like me – that’s why I use the feminine pronoun – as I was made in her image and likeness. One of the many very cool things about God….we are all made in God’s image and likeness and we are all sooooo different.

There’s nothing about Jesus that I dislike….Ok, one thing, he sets an
example that I at times find hard to follow.

I do dislike that stupid quote about tolerance and standing for nothing!

BTW . . . it’s the University of Notre Dame – not Notre Dame Univeristy.

None of today’s “outraged” protesters had much to say when pro-choice, pro-death penalty, pro-war, pro-torture Condoleezza Rice spoke at Notre Dame’s commencement. At least President Obama agrees with the Catholic Church on most of these issues.

Support the University’s decision. Sign the petition:

Mrs. Godzilla:

1) Thanks for a reasonable attempt at answering my question. See, it wasn’t that hard and it’s much more polite than being “one way”.

a) Since you find nothing about Jesus that you dislike I assume you like everything He said or did.

b) No, Jesus was not “made” in God’s likeness. He only took on human form as God Himself. Jesus was God from eternity past. “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God ….”. “All things were made by Him”. “If you have seen Me you have seen the Father”. “I and the Father are one”. Jesus is fully God and as thus was never created. He was from the beginning. That is the basic tenet of Christianity. To believe otherwise is an attempt to de-deify Christ and false doctrine/heresy.

c) Man and woman are made in God’s image meaning we are triune beings with a body, soul and spirit (yet one person) much like God is a triune being yet “One”.

d) If Jesus taught all of his followers (including women) to pray, “Our Father”, why would you object to that? Not being a little rebellious are you? Be careful …. as I said before “Satan can disquise Himself as an angel of light”.

e) Jesus is returning to reign forever as “King” but not “queen”. I hope you will not address Him as queen.

2) Your question about the death penalty is a good one. There is no scripture saying “I am for the death penalty” (as there is none saying I am for jail terms for bank fraud) so we must infer based on the totality of the scriptures (I could give you many) taken in their proper context. With that in mind, I believe it is Biblical for certain heinious crimes and certainly murder. Remember, even the thief on the cross said “he justly deserved this”.

With this in mind, what more of a “death sentence” is there than eternity in hell. For everytime Jesus mentioned heaven, He warned of hell many more times. As a human being I don’t understand that but I don’t get to make the rules.

I hope I have answered “your” question. If not, fine tune it and I’ll try again.

A. Thanks
B. Not all Christian’s go for that.
C. A very cool thing, like I said.
D. I trust the J man….no problem. Satan can also disguise himself as a marine.
E. Jesus returning to live as king, not queen? That’s good ‘cuz lot’s of fundamentalists have problems with Queens.

and last, so you can’t show where Big J supported the death penalty.

Gee that was fun!

Corporal, we are sooo very different.

I’ll keep you in my prayers!

I suspect the folks in North Dakota (the other ND) could use both our prayers today.

Mrs. G.:

Enjoyed most of the exchange, even your “humor” (as opposed to debate) as long as the personal attacks are kept to a minimum.

Yes, they need our prayers as does the entire country.

Take care ………….

GOP – Angry Old White Man’s Party… soon to go the way of the dinosaur!
