Cuz the times, they are a changin’

from the AJC:

“The Atlanta Journal-Constitution said Wednesday it will cut its full-time news staff by nearly 30 percent to lower costs as it tries to regain profitability amid a severe revenue slump.

The company also announced it will eliminate distribution to seven more outlying counties, reducing its circulation area to 20 metro Atlanta counties, effective April 26. The cutback will pare daily and Sunday circulation by 2 percent.

The AJC’s news staff will drop to about 230 full-time positions, down from about 323 currently. Staff members with five or more years with the company will be offered voluntary buyouts, with layoffs to follow if fewer than about 90 apply, the company said.

Most of the news staff cuts “will be in production and management, allowing us to keep as many news reporters as possible,” AJC and ajc.com editor Julia Wallace said.

The cuts are expected to be completed in May.

The company laid off 48 part-time news staffers Tuesday and announced the full-time cuts Wednesday morning.”

Jay – Instead of “throwing the wingnuttys a bone”, why not post a piece on last night’s news conference? Do you not deem it newsworthy? Our president addressed the nation last night and so fat today we have a piece on Notre Dame and the AJC’s workforce reductions. I would think the president’s commentary on the current state of the economy would be a little bit more topical.

To segue nicely off the Notre Dame “controversy” and into this topic:

CNN – There are reportedly 67.1 million Catholics in the U.S., according to The Official Catholic Directory 2008. Compared to the 2007 number of 67.5, that’s about a 400,000 decrease in one year. And the Pew Forum found that approximately a third of its survey respondents who were raised in the Roman Catholic Church no longer attend the church.

Earlier this month, Bishop Richard G. Lennon of the Diocese of Cleveland, which serves more than 750,000 Catholics, announced that 29 parishes will close and 41 others will merge. The reconfiguration plan, which will effectively cut 52 parishes in the current tally of 224.

The Obama administration’s only intellectual challengers are on the left, where economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman and others are offering a vigorous critique and proposing alternative solutions. But where are the Republicans? Doing nothing but complaining. Unless and until they do offer an alternative, they really have no right to whine about the president.

To seque off your segue of the Notre Dame shame of inviting President Obama, I am not catholic (but I do respect some catholicm people)it is hardly the fault of the catholic church that these people have chosen to abandon the Lord. In this day and time when the media, public institutions, and popular culture bombard people, from the time they are in the cradle, with ungodly and hateful speeech directed toward religion, it is remarkable that the fallout is not twice so high.

Now, on to President Obama at Notre Dame, whether Catholic or not (and I certainly am not), clearly President Obama is not a life to be celebrated and emulated.

He has spread abortion (and thereby death of innocents) outside our borders and abdicated any moral authority by endorsing the creation, cloning, and killing of embryos.

Beyond that, one can draw no other conclusion than that President Obama is a sociopath. Last night he spake that his budget would transion us from a “borrow and spend” nation to a “save and invest” nation. Since the nonpartisan (but appointed by Democrats) CBO estimates a $10 trillion increase in our nation debt at the hands of the Obama policies, how could anyone but A STONE-COLD LIAR SOCIOPATH make the “borrow and spend” to a “save and invest” transition staement?

The truly sad thing is that the liberal sheople continue to bleat praise for Obama and kiss the ground upon which this reprehensible sociopath walks.

This has been coming on for years, way before the advent of PC’s and the Internet. Most towns and cities and at least two major newspaper outlets up until the 70’s and the 80’s. A lot of them folder altogether or merged into one paper. Like the passing of time and the things we feel are institutions, this too must pass. I do not think all newspapers will close and the really good ones will survive. Over twenty years ago my mother started cutting out comic strips for my children, who were babies at the time, to look at in the future because she told me then that these would one day be a thing of the past. I still remember our paper boy, his nick-name was Spike, delivering the daily paper to our door and I’m glad I have that memory that my one-day grandchildren will never know. Like milkmen, diaper delivery and doctors who made house calls we will only see them now in old movies on TCM. I am truly sad for days gone by but nostalgia longing can not and should not stop progress. That being said, newspapers do serve a greater purpose than it’s given credit for and I hope the AJC never goes completely bust.

JC, you are absolutely, positively correct IMHO.

The reich-wingers lament that the “liberal” press hurts their cause. Yet they idiotically refuse to acknowledge that about 15 giant groups of corporatists — historically BIG time Repuliconning allies — control these outlets, lock, stock and barrel.

If anything, I believe the “free” press, pretty much gave BushCo a free pass.

For example, rather than do their actual job as you noted, the corporate controlled sycophants could not get in line quick enough to capitalize on booming sales after shock and awe. Long enough for the Hero of the Texas ANG to complete screw up the situation horrifically and hopelessly.

War-mongering chickenhawk after war-mongering chickenhawk was paraded out endlessly to triumph the spoils and righteousness of the BushCo Crusades! No matter that they essentially were built upon lies and were utterly botched. Costing thousands of lives needlessly.

And for eight years where was the outrage?

Debacle after debacle after debacle and barely a peep. Some half-hearted admonishments, but who dared to really stand up to these bungling thugs and their monied masters?

Where were the demands that these two-quasi-criminals be brought to justice before the US Congress? Oh that’s right. The boys on Capitol Hill are a bunch of complicit, co-conspiratorial criminals themselves.

Oh well.

Bloodlust and train wrecks sell really, really well.

Why would the MSM insist the gutless conductors of sch abominations change their ways when it would actually cost them almighty dollars to do otherwise?

Print media has been dying for years.

Media in its current form is not what it is intended to be. The majority of the media (TV stations, TV networks, newspapers, and magazines) are owned by about six (6) large corporations. Their messages are controlled not by ideology (please, don’t confuse an editorial written by an individual with the mission of a corporate board–esp. when it comes with a disclaimer…) but by MONEY.

Anyone who calls the media “liberal” is so far to the right and out of touch with reality that they don’t realize how looney they are. Then again, these are the same people who think that the word “liberal” should be used as an insult.

A metaphor for you. Imagine a football field. The far right wingnuts are in one endzone, and the far left loonies are in the other. Those who look at things objectively will realize that the mainstream media hang out between the 40s (with the overwhelming majority of them between the 45s). However, if you are in the endzone, even the 50 yard line seems way, way far away to the extreme from your point of view.

No, the media are neither liberal nor conservative. They are corporate, and what they report (and really, HOW they do it) depends on whatever makes profit. It’s difficult for the print media because it’s more difficult to be sensational in words. Plus, don’t buy books, magazines, or newspapers much–period–these days, which drives down revenue. The argument that newspapers are going away because of the “message” is bogus because people aren’t buying novels anymore, either. Is that because novels suck right now? NO, and evidence of that is because people flock to the television for crappy television every Monday night (for example).

In conclusion, get a grip people, and have some compassion for those who will be losing their jobs in a difficult market. I have a friend who writes for the Denver Post who is seeing the effects of the Rocky Mountain News’ decision to close its doors. It’s hard out there, and it’s not going to get better. With the media consolidations going on, that means fewer sources for information and fewer jobs for those in that industry. Not good, all around. But hey, enjoy the deregulation in this particular market!

Commie, you named several sources that were the leading cheerleaders for Bush’s biggest blunder, the Iraq War. How is that not giving him a free pass?

Anyway, you see Tucker’s column’s as “race baiting”, while I see her as telling it like it is. And I find it interesting that when a Black person writes an article about race, it’s “race baiting”, but a white person writing the exact article is left alone. I also find it interesting that, when the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of an author’s articles have nothing to do with race, it’s declared by some people that said author “only writes about race”.

And we wonder who’s fixated on race here…

And now, a minor ranting point:

Pointing out disparity is NOT “blaming whitey”. Acknowledging that Western society and culture is racist, sexist, and homophobic is not blaming anyone; rather, it’s putting the problem out there and issuing a challenge to those who claim to care to do something about it. Part of that is to STOP being a COWARD and discuss the issue head on. Stop hiding behind codewords, religion, and class and instead confront the challenges head on. For example, the guy who utters a homophobic slur when he sees something that he doesn’t like may not himself be homophobic. However, he IS a part of a homophobic society and culture and has not consciously altered his mindset in order to be more mindful about how his actions affect others. But I digress, and I am aware that much of this is going over the heads of about 98% of you, which is what’s truly sad.

YOUR POST:

*********** HOT OFF THE (WORKING) PRESS ************

The EU President, Mirek Topolanek, has blasted Obama’s stimulus plan, calling it the ‘way to hell’. You can read about it on nytimes.com.

MY POST:

The leadership of the European Union was plunged into disarray last night when the Government holding the rotating presidency collapsed after losing a vote of no confidence in the Czech parliament.

Mirek Topolanek offered his resignation as Prime Minister, although he was expected to stay on to ensure continuity for the EU presidency, not least because he was due to represent Europe’s non-G20 countries at next week’s London Summit – and host Barack Obama when he visits Prague.

Mr Topolanek’s defeat leaves him representing the EU when his parliament has rejected him. He may also have to start preparing for an election just when the EU needs to focus on the G20 summit, including enhanced regulation for banks and a crackdown on tax havens and hedge funds.

MY CONCLUSION:

Your hero sounds like the loser in the Republican Party here in the U.S.

getalife, the real problem lies with people not saving their money. My generation wants it all. They want to live like their parents do except they don’t have the money to spend. Instead of buying a nice cheap car, my generation likes their fancy Lexus and Beemers. Instead of buying a smaller house, my generation buys the $400,000 home. You reap what you sow.

NOMAD,

I am officially in cat mourning now. Thanks for asking. He passed about 6:00 last night. We had a nice funeral for him – said some prayers from the Book of Common Prayer, buried him, placed a nice sized flat landscaping stone on top and planted some flowers around it. We buried him with some of his toys – when archaeologist dig him up in about 100,000 years, they’ll think he was some kind of noble cat – and in our world – he was just that. We Episcopals do things right.

I’ve been really busy this morning, which is good for my head – so I haven’t had much time to think about him or post (caz, hence my short answer earlier).

Commie, I am a complete beer snob! About the only stuff that touches my lips anymore (OK, OK, I asked for that one!) is high gravity hand crafted beer.

There are many great American microbreweries – Stone in San Diego, Dogfish Head in Delaware and Lagunitas in Petaluma are all favorites.

There used to be a fabulous one right here in Atlanta – Dogwood Brewery. But alas they folded some years back.

And any Belgian beer is right up my alley.

Also the Unibroue stuff from Canada is delicious.

Amber ales, IPAs, porters, stouts. It’s all good.

I know it’s a bit of a pipe dream, but I too have wondered if one day we couldn’t all rendezvous somewhere for a cold one…

Bush’s ‘folly’ is ending in victory

MARKETS without bombs. Hummers without guns. Ice cream after dark. Busy streets without fear.” So began Terry McCarthy’s report from Iraq for ABC’s World News Sunday on March 15, one of a series the network aired last week as the war in Iraq reached its sixth anniversary.

A nationwide poll of Iraqis reveals that “60 percent expect things to get better next year – almost three times as many as a year and a half ago,” McCarthy continued. “Iraqis are slowly discovering they have a future. We flew south to Basra, where 94 percent say their lives are going well. Oil is plentiful here. So is money.”

caz, perhaps, but if so, then nearly 98% of the Republicans voting aye on the resolution to use force did gutlessly vote entirely the party line, yes?

And if so, that proves my point.

Also, one other point I’d like to make in this regard.

I excoriated those Dems that later “saw the light” and denounced the invasion/occupation. Again, I think this was in MOST cases pure political showmanship. I vowed never to vote for the Dems who let Bush/Cheney get away with this cr@p, and never did.

Some of the “loyal opposition” protested that they changed their minds because Bush botched it so badly. Like they couldn’t have surmised that going in? I sure as hell did. The man was theretofore a walking screw up and was BOUND to be an abysmal CIC and “War Time President”.

Gawd, I wish I had been wrong.

We might just have 4,600+ American GIs still alive.

And I am convinced that to this day the Republican Party still has NO clue on how to effectively prosecute the killing of our enemies…

Bad news, jay. Unfortunately, that’s all that’s deliverable of late.

Speaking of deliverable, what happened to those minimum-wage paper pushers who worked for the AJC on street corners throughout the metro — the ones without benefits, I assume.

Were they the first to go? Did they get a severance package? Does the AJC feel, at the very least, responsible for their inability to accumulate a modest nest-egg which would sustain them through these difficult times?

Just wonderin’ since the AJC has always championed in their behalf.

Well, I’m right sorry to hear a bunch of people at the AJC are going to be out of jobs soon. If it wasn’t for people like Bookman all the AJC people would be out of jobs. He gives a place where the teenagers can gather and call each other names and compare notes on TV shows and movies and such. They learn more there than they would ever learn in school. Except for that fellow that graduated from Duke. I reckon he learnt everything there is to know and just drops by to chat once in a while.

I hear old Slim Rowsback down at the warehouse is about to get the ax. It’s the third time they caught him sleeping one off between the Miller and PBR cases. There might could be a job for one of the AJC guys that gets laid off. Anyway, pass the word to keep up with what I write on Bookman’s blog. If they can still afford a PC, that is.

Have a good p.m. everybody.

A lot of local weekly papers are doing fairly well. They’ve sort of found their niche. Admittedly comparing them to big city dailies is comparing apples to oranges.

Just a thought here. What if a big paper tried shooting straight down the middle. Neither a left or right slant? When you choose a side don’t you automatically alienate a large segment of potential customers? It would be interesting to see somebody try it to see if it worked.

HD, I know you’re not going to believe this, but that’s pretty much what the AJC has been doing for as long as I’ve been reading the thing.

Or are you saying that a newspaper should try not having any kind of an editorial section at all? I don’t know that there are any out there that do that, figure there’s a reason that’s so.

Where is the GOP budget plan, you ask?

Shortly before the president took to the lectern, Democrats in Congress were preparing to make sharp cuts to the budget plan for which he sought to rally support in his news conference.

I’d say the GOP is weaving their magic through Democratic webs.

In political parlors, that’s the spider telling Obama to step inline.

The AJC for a number of months has become a local news roundup, and its tone resembles my h igh school paper.

Nearly every article that is national news coverage is the superficial right wingnut Associated Press. Rarely there is a week old import from the NYT.

Julia Wallace and her editorial board are doing a bangup job of covering Tyler Perry and all the activities of the gold digging dysfunctional trao;er trasj Atlanta Housewives though.

AJC is providing wall to wall coverage of Tyler Perry and the gold digging, dysfunctional Atlanta housewives. Plenty of employees have been retained who are versed in them. Coverage of international and national news is superficial, imported from the Associated Press, and has atrophied to the point of miniscule now. It’s great that the Editorial Board has retained their team who is all over Tyler Perry and the Atlanta Housewives–it’s hard to tell the latter from the Georgia Legislature.

Wyld Byll Hyltnyr,

Well as much as I have tried to stay out of the mud slinging I just can’t let Wyld Byll Hyltnry get away with his partisan spewing of inaccurate information. Here is what he said about President Obama;

He has spread abortion (and thereby death of innocents) outside our borders and abdicated any moral authority by endorsing the creation, cloning, and killing of embryos.

Wyld Byll, let me guess, you barely made through high school. Abortion has been legal in this country since 1973 so President Obama hasn’t spread anything. How has he spread it outside our borders? Please explain. He does not condone the creation of embroys for research but he does think it is better to use them for research than to throw them in the trash if they are not used by the parents for in-vitro fertilization. Nor does he condone the idea of cloning and he has said that many times. You are either a liar, to dumb to know the facts or you get all your information from Sean Hannity. In any case you sound like a blubbering drunk.

To DB @ 1:35

I’m saying have editorials that represent both sides. Or maybe 3 views on the same issue: left, right, and center. Or for instance have Mr. Bookman and Mr. Wooten write on the same subject 3 days a week or whatever. It’d be something I’d be willing to try if I owned the paper. They have to try something in order to stay in business.

It might surprise you that I disagree with Jim about as often as I do with Jay.

I go back to the days when the Journal and Constitution were 2 different papers. Constitution the more left view and morning paper. The Journal was more of a right view and afternoon paper. Both papers were owned by Cox as well as WSB. WSB was by far the most watched station in Atlanta back then. I also remember the Atlanta Times of the mid 60’s which didn’t stay in business very long. I don’t really think there was room for a third paper in the market at the time.

HD, I’m not trying to be obtuse, but when you write “I’m saying have editorials that represent both sides.” — I just don’t get it. The AJC does that. All the time. If the AJC posts an editorial on a topic, they almost always provide equal time on the same day for someone they’ve found who’s willing to do an argument against.

As for their mix of columnists, I can’t understand how anyone could look at it and think it was especially tilted one way or another. While their own editorial staff leans slightly left on balance (although that’s arguable) they always include more conservative syndicated columns than liberal ones.

The people who think the AJC is a liberal paper obviously don’t read it. When is the last time this newspaper wrote anything about how the policies in this state over the past six years have ruined the economy? In 13 years Georgia has gone from hosting the Olympics to one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation. The AJC has simply tried not to rock the boat, and that’s why more people don’t read it.

Rush Limbaugh for President 2:16 pm

Looks like you have had one sip too many of the Koolaid. You are exactly the sort of useful fool that President Obama and his dark minions crave.

First, of course, and 45 million most unfortunate innocent deaths later, abortion has been legal since the 1970s. Great leaders from President Reagan to both Presidents Bush blocked US foreign aid as a source of funding overseas aboprtions, the current death merchant at 1600 Pennsylvania shut down the nightly conga lines and television appearances long enough to undue the noble works that Presidents Reagan and Bush did in refuasing to fund abortion with US aid. Check the facts, it makes on’es argument stronger when the facts are on your side – which see my strong argument compared to your shamelessly embarrassing drivel.

Next, read the executive order signed by President Obama, the Mengele of the modern day. It clearly allows for cloning, which would result in the cloning of fetuses with the most desirable characteristics for research.

Finally, I am not Rush fan, but even a drug addled, one trick pony, ideolouge such as Rush deserves something better than you.
