“WASHINGTON—On the day of the year that America gives its practically undivided attention to the Irish, President Obama announced that he is naming Daniel Rooney—owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers—to be ambassador to Ireland.
Mr. Rooney, who campaigned for Mr. Obama and presented him with a Steelers jersey during a campaign event, co-founded the American Ireland Fund, an organization to promote peace in Northern Ireland through education programs.
“Dan Rooney is an unwavering supporter of Irish peace, culture and education,” Mr. Obama said in a statement.
And to mark St. Patrick’s Day with an additional splash, White House officials somehow—food coloring?—turned the fountain on the White House lawn green.”
The Times story didn’t mention — maybe because everybody already knows — that the Steelers won the Super Bowl this year.

Yeah, I’ve been a Steeler fan for 40+ years also, with the wife being from there and all, but we just last week bought our first professional season tickets for the upcoming Falcons season!

Amid AIG Furor, Dodd Tries to Undo Bonus Protections He Put In.
Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) on Monday night floated the idea of taxing American International Group (AIG: 0.9112, 0.1311, 16.81%) bonus recipients so the government could recoup some or all of the $450 million the company is paying to employees in its financial products unit. Within hours, the idea spread to both houses of Congress, with lawmakers proposing an AIG bonus tax.
The move represents somewhat of an about-face for the Senator.
While the Senate was constructing the $787 billion stimulus last month, Dodd added an executive-compensation restriction to the bill. That amendment provides an “exception for contractually obligated bonuses agreed on before Feb. 11, 2009” — which exempts the very AIG bonuses Dodd and others are now seeking to tax.
The amendment made it into the final version of the bill, and is law.

I love Bono and I believe he comes across the way he does because of his intellect and humility (despite his assertions to the contrary).
I truly believe he intrinsically understands that the dire needs of the developing world are so much larger and so much more important than the petty dalliances of celebrity. But he will use whatever advantage he has to push his noble and just campaign.
Bono is human, he makes mistakes like we all do…(those looking for perfection on this earth need to change the direction of their gaze upwards), but it is this very humanity that makes his words ring all the truer.
Bono will go down in the history books as one of the great humans of this century. He should be given the Congressional Medal of Honor, Nobel Peace Prize, Knighted, canonized, idolized and adored. He is one of the few that practices what he preaches, and he preaches loudly!
Thank you, Dublin, for giving him a background, thank you, Mr. & Mrs. Hewson, for giving him life. Thank you, U2, for giving him a microphone and a platform from which to sing! “Sing a new song, how long, to sing this song!”
God bless you, Bono.

It isn’t just Bono’s U2 who are talking through their hat about tax avoidance
All last week, Bono was in court in Dublin arguing about a stetson. It was his trademark hat, as essential a part of the brand that is Bono as his compassion for starving Africans. His former stylist, Lola Cashman, says he gave the hat to her as thanks for her hard work. He looked like Nana Mouskouri before she remodelled him and it is outrageous, she says, for Bono to claim now that she stole it so she could sell it and make money which was rightfully his.
The learned judges of Ireland have a duty to apply their fine minds to the case with due seriousness. What is surprising is that the rest of the world continues to take Bono seriously. I would have thought that after the revelation that U2 moved their music publishing company to the Netherlands to cut their tax bill in half, he wouldn’t have dared stepped out of his mansion for fear of being laughed to scorn.

I recall Bush’s initiative to privatize Social Security.
It was a major part of the Bush agenda just after he declared himself mandated to spend “political capital” he’d earned via his devastating 50.7% landslide in the 2004 election.
If the initiative hadn’t failed, and Social Security monies were rising and falling with the stock market, I’d imagine that a whole lot of retirees might be eating cat food right about now.
Of course, the plan was never about enlightened management of public funds.
It was a tactic aimed at giving more voters a personal stake in the stock market, hopefully propelling them into a more pro-business, pro-Rushpublicant perspective.

Well, I reckon I went into the wrong business. Fox News is reporting that 73 of the AIG workers got a bonus of a million bucks or more. Heck, I thought I’d made it to the top when I got to be a beer truck driver. It sure beat dry wall work and dealing with a cranky mortar mixer. Maybe if I’d of looked a little harder I could be a AIG big guy and buying a new double-wide and another pickup right now, instead of lugging cases of beer into bars and stores and such. Oh, well. It’s just my tax money.
