So … what’s your problem with Pelosi?

I’d like to understand something that only our conservative posters can probably explain:

What’s your issue with Nancy Pelosi?

Seriously.

pelosiYes, she’s a Democrat. I get that. Yes, she’s from San Francisco. And yes, I understand the political usefulness of casting her as a real-life Emmanuel Goldstein, an Object of Hate. That was particularly true back before the Democrats had such an obvious party leader in President Obama.

But I’d like to see specific things that Pelosi has said or done that might justify the level of vilification directed at her, because as far as I can tell it’s vastly out of scale to her alleged crimes.

For example, I regularly get emails containing a collection of outrageous statements by Pelosi, but when you read those quotes and try to trace them back to their source, they all turn out to be fake.

If you have to fabricate quotations in order to justify hating someone, doesn’t that kind of tell you something?

(Typo corrected above)

UPDATE: Well, as of 6:30, with roughly 30 comments logged, I’ve got what I expected: Expressions of hatred, but no explanation for it. No specific act or statement to justify it. Just variations on “I can’t stand her!”

So it remains a mystery. Won’t somebody solve it for me?

Bueller? Bueller?

And that does not stop her from thinking she knows everything.

However, when the topic shifted to natural gas, that’s when Pelosi blew it as she repeatedly referred to natural gas as “a good alternative to fossil fuels.”-Daily Kos

She is a bleeding heart liberal who runs an organization that has an approval less than Bush’s when he left office…. just over 30%. That means that 70% of the country feels, to some degree, the same way as I do. She is arrogant, overbearing and dictatorial. She reminds me of Cynthia McKinney. Is that not enough?

Jay:

You highlighted a couple – Democrat and San Francisco, which would probably be enough even if you did leave out extremely hyper-partisan and liberal as two other identifiers that highlight her automatically as a target for anger and bitterness. Add the fact that, so long as President Obama allows her to craft bad legislation that he simply co-opts as a defacto signatory, she is effectively the face of the kook liberal fringe of the Democratic Party that is so ridiculously out of touch with mainstream America – you have all the more explanation.

Followed up with the fact that she, in that role, is the face of blame for all Americans who are sick and tired of having government confiscate 30-40% of our earnings to fund transfer payments and programs that people should provide for themselves. To those Americans, she is simply the face of the thief who steals more of what we earn than any mob of muggers could ever take.

I would contend that her position (along with Senator Reid) is well-deserved. On the flip side, if she were to graciously quit writing & passing legislation that presumes she knows better how my time, money, and talents should be kept or spent than I do, I would be happy to reconsider my current opinion of her.

As usual the wingnutters have resorted to ignorant and idiot as terms to assess Pelosi and that was precisely why Jay asked the question. They explain nothing and entrench the nutters into their daily role of whining because they lost and they’re going to lose big.

A lot of liberals aren’t happy with Pelosi because of her eggregious stance on FISA (you remember that Jay–you have to read other sources besides the one you editorial board to get insight into what happened) and Pelosi’s sympathy towards the cowardly Blue Dog Dems with respect to FISA) and her lack of a backbone when it came to opposing Bush during the last two years.

If you keep score, Jay, the Dems rubber stamped Bush on nearly every important vote in Congress during the last two years and Pelosi was a considerable influence and participant in this display of spinelessness.

I wonder if Nancy, Harry and Hussein will run from Iran?

Iran holds enough uranium for bomb

By Daniel Dombey

Iran has now built up a stockpile of enough enriched uranium for one nuclear bomb, United Nations officials acknowledged on Thursday.

In a development that comes as the Obama administration is drawing up its policy on negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear programme, UN officials said Iran had produced more nuclear material than previously thought.

They said Iran had now accumulated more than one tonne of low enriched uranium hexafluoride at a facility in Natanz. If such a quantity were further enriched it could produce more than 20kg of fissile material – enough for a bomb.

“It appears that Iran has walked right up to the threshold of having enough low enriched uranium to provide enough raw material for a single bomb,” said Peter Zimmerman, a former chief scientist of the US Arms Control and Disarmament Agency

The new figures come in a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN’s nuclear watchdog, released on Thursday.

This revealed that Iran’s production of low enriched uranium had previously been underestimated.

When the agency carried out an annual stocktaking of Natanz in mid-November Iran had produced 839 kg of low enriched uranium hexafluoride – more than 200kg more than previously thought.

Pelosi is far from “coming together”. She is about as blindly partisan as any politico on the hill and is proud of it. Her edict to House Democrats about opposing “anything” that Bush puts forward is a testament to her determination to make every decision and every piece of legislation as liberal and as left leaning as she can. She has a personal fortune of about 26M which is virtually untouchable by any form of investment. So she can sit on top of the hill and give away our money as much as she wants. Any Speaker of the House who travels to the Middle East to practice foreign policy without the approval of the Executive Branch, as she did, is a danger to America. There are no powers enumerated in the Constitution that enables the Legislative Branch to conduct foreign policy – none.

b) You have not demonstrated you can discuss an issue or that you grasp any of them from what I’ve seen.
c)To the extent you are angry with me and want to call me a name, I’m delighted.

Do you have any issues domestic or foreign you’re capable of bringing to the table and discussing?

Jay already knew about the venom for Pelosi. You don’t help him understand its intensity by referencing your fantasy of her plastic surgery, her outfits (the average cost of them is about $5 grand but who cares there), or reiterating you don’t like her.

Jay’s question was specifically what don’t you like about her.

Cantor, Boehner, and McConnel have to date displayed a terrible grasp of the economy and have no real significant economic agenda or policy besides tax cuts and politically guessing that the economy will be slow to recover and hoping it can somehow stave off a disaster in 2010. It won’t.

But no one on the left cares whether Boehner or McConnel or Cantor has plastic surgery, or any other medical procedure or what they look like.

Can’t you focus on an issue–rather than childish fantasy over appearance or surgery? What does plastic surgery or appearance have to do with governing?

Is Congress measured by how many of their pics show up in OK Magazine?

Wow, those first few posts perfectly capture the lunacy of the blogosphere, don’t they? . They should be put in a time capsule and buried to be reviewed in the future where people would have a good laugh.

Not one of them actually addresses specific grievances. In any real fashion. In fact nary a single solitary piece of data or evidence to support such vitriolic emotion. They proffer nary a significant piece of information. Much less several. And never in any comprehensive way.

I dislike her favoring the Fairness Doctrine: On June 24, 2008, U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco, California told reporters that her fellow Democratic Representatives did not want to forbid reintroduction of the Fairness Doctrine, adding “the interest in my caucus is the reverse.”

(Ironic, given the previous thread, isn’t it?)

She also favors the federal bailout of the banks and the auto industry. In 2001, she voted in favor of the USA Patriot Act. She voted for the No Child Left Behind Act, too. And she’s weak on illegal immigration. And as getalife noted she spinelessly let Bush dance right through his last couple of ever worsening years instead of impeaching him and Dick, like they should have.

BUT…she voted NO to giving them the OK to botch an invasion and occupation. And that cannot be understated in my mind. She gets a HUGE break for that alone. Also, she has said that “America and Israel share an unbreakable bond: in peace and war; and in prosperity and in hardship”. She supports reforming marijuana laws and the use of medical marijuana. She supports legal abortion. She voted against a Constitutional amendment banning flag-burning and against a Congressional resolution supporting the display of the Ten Commandments in courtrooms. She’s not an enviro-raper and after George publicly blamed Congress, she responded by calling the president “a total failure, losing all credibility with the American people on the war, on the economy, on energy, you name the subject” and that Congress had been “sweeping up after his mess over and over and over again”.

She was not wrong.

(BTW, Ray for the umpteenth time Congress’ abysmal approval ratings are being even further dragged down by its GOP members.)

So as bad as I think she is on certain issues, overall and compared to her Republican predecessors and colleagues, she is miles ahead in my opinion…

I don’t remember anyone asking people to express their problems with Sarah Palin, who certainly had a level of vilification vastly out of scale to her alleged crimes. I bet you had no problems with that question.

But much like Palin, Pelosi is a symbol and therefore a lightning rod. To conservatives, she (more so really than Obama) is the epitome of the liberal left.

She’s a baby boomer product of uber-left wing San Francisco (where they think she’s too conservative, natch). She is a person in a powerful position, with the ability to pull the purse strings of the government. She is for every single social and financial issue conservatives are against. The posters above gave good examples.

She has failed to oppose the Bush and recent Obama adoption of Bush State Secrets policy although she has nominally signed onto a State Secrets bill that will soon be passed in Congress but how effective she and it will be remains to be seen.

Pelosi ran a Congress that voted with Bush strongly on every major destructive bill he supported.

That’s 3 times I’ve specified although not with enough specificity and a list as to why I’m not a Pelosi fan.

I haven’t spewed hate towards Pelosi. She led a Congress who rubber stamped Bush and was hypocritical with respect to the FISA bill.

Pelosi failed to invoke inherent contempt against Rove and Miers when they ignored a House Judiciary subpoena. She chose to embark on futile lengthy expensive litigation in a D.C. Circuit that has 18/21 judges who are Bush Federalist martinets. Did I spell inherent contempt that should have been invoked against Miers and Rove correctly Jay X2?

Well, Bookman, as much as the Bookman RightWingnutterbutters love to make Obama their bogeyman (because he’s a Dem, because he’s black, because his name sounds funny (to them), because his dad was from Kenya, because he’s better educated (than them), because his wife is smart (especially compared to theirs)), they hate Pelosi more, because she’s a well-educated woman.

RightWingnutterbutters (male and female) think smart women are witches. Witness the non-stop eight-year hissy fit they had over Hillary. RightWingnutterbutters are only comfortable with idiot women and the doormat types – and Man Coulter.

Think of poor Cynthia Tucker, being black and female, and your Bookman RightWingnutterbutters vile and disgusting rantings towards her that we witness fairly regularly on your blog and throughout the AJC.

(CNN) — The Republican Party needs to change — at least when it comes to its use of technology, Meghan McCain says.

In a column on the Daily Beast Web site, the daughter of Sen. John McCain says the GOP is likely to continue its decline in power unless members vastly improve their tech fluency.

She’s correct, but may be missing the salient point about the technophobic reactionaries.

The Old White Guy Party not using the web, etc is a SYMPTOM of their current decrepit state. Not the cause.

Jay

I won’t go into the partisanship aspect. I’ve said before, as someone said earlier, that she seems bent on out-DelLaying DeLay. But I’ll let that one slide as many would say that’s the duty of the leader of the majority party. But I do find it a bit problematic given the President’s call for a new tone.

I disagree with her stance that charity, giving to the less fortunate, is a government responsibility that absolves private giving. What do I mean? She and her husband are worth over $90 million. Her charitable giving is a pittance, and when she does give, it’s more to institutions such as art museums and symphonies enjoyed by those of her social status than to the less fortunate. I hesitate to call it hypocritical. as she’s not talked about the personal aspect. Just the government’s – who, by the way, gets the money to be generous with from other citizens.

I find her hypocritical in another area – abandoning principles to maintain political power. An example – she loudly denounced Republicans with ethics problems, but when it comes to Rep Charles Rangel, well, it seems no infraction, or no number of infractions, is enough to get her to call for the same actions she would if he were Republican.

I find her less than honorable. Go back to the widely-reported briefing(s) she received in 2002 on ‘enhanced interrogation techniques.’ She knew what they were and how they would be used. Yet when the techniques were revealed years later she acted “shocked! shocked, I tell you! and appalled that the administration would do such a thing! When it was pointed out she knew about this, her response was a masterwork of parsing. Well, she said, it was only planned, it hadn’t been done. And the lawyers said it was okay! And I was only told about it once.” But I viewed her as cynically using something she was at one point okay with to score political points against the administration.

I don’t view her as having strong principles. Two examples: IF there was a danger to exposing CIA personnel as revealed in the Plame case, and if existing law was inadequate to prosecute offenders, then she had a responsibility to make changes in the law. When all the fanfare died down, she did nothing.

Same with the ‘torture’ thing. IF she really wanted an end to ‘torture’ she would have pushed effective legislation to prevent it. She didn’t. So either she thinks we need some tough options and is unwilling to take a stand and say so, or she wants it left loose so she can have more political theater in the future.

That’s enough for now.

I think it is stupid to put stupid warmongers in high office, especially after the last eight years. I think at a bare minimum the POTUS should have learned long before his/her 40s that Africa is a continent, not a country.

For the record Ray, the average approval rating of Congress since the early 70’s is 35% so to chastise Pelosi over a 30+% approval rating is somewhat misguided. To contrast that the average approval rating for a President over that time is 55%, better than 20 points higher than that of the Republicans last offering for President.

I voted for Obama and am not a big fan of Pelosi largely because I think she forces partisanship where it is not needed to accomplish a goal. That being said, that is exactly why she has the job she has.

I did have to chuckle at the comment from Swami Dave calling Pelosi “out of touch with mainstream America”. There is a new standard by which we measure “out of touch with mainstream America” and that is the leadership within the Republican Party. I don’t agree with everything Pelosi does by any stretch of the imagination however out of touch with MS America is not really accurate either…
