Actually at one time the United States had the safest food supply in the world. The first and last time it acquired that worlds safest food supply ranking was when Jimmy Carter was president. Carter had some of the toughest food safety people at both the FDA and the USDA and members from the FDA and USDA under his administration have gone on to start some of the largest consumer food safety organizations in the country. Carter also created programs to maintain the safety of the nations wheat supply and to protect it from contamination.

Unfortunately among the first things dismantled by the Reagan administration were Carters food safety regulations and programs.

Industry should never be trusted to regulate itself, much less write its own legislation and appoint its own executives to head regulatory agencies.

Isn't that just common sense, folks? Come on! We wouldn't trust a pickpocket to guard the bank, why would we trust CEOs to regulate corporate misbehavior?

This is the logical result of the Republican/Bush "industry can regulate itself" philosophy. Why did cases of tainted processed food shoot up when Bush was in office? Simple, he slashed all the regulators saying they weren't necessary. The logical conclusion to reach here is not that government can't do it's job but that Republicans undermine government to make it less effective.

Hey Terrence,,, I mentioned something like that about 8:52 am this morning on my third cup of JAVA.

All we need is in-line and automated inspection systems that just as you suggest provide 100% inspection. Catalog the results and guess what? everyone's butt is covered in the event of problems with exception to the one that's showing.

Had a production engineer turn OFF the QA part of the program in the interest of productivity. The client had a defect pass through and hit the market. 9 people injured 3 deaths. Know what? no data to prove anything. Stock dropped on this company 60% in a few hours. Class action suit. Settled out of court, sound familiar

Why the hell do we need more government inspectors?

When I go to get my car tag, the DMV has the result of my emission (required) test online. Emission testing centers are licensed by the state.

Every damn inspection should be input on computer and forwarded to the proper agency immediately. If something shows up an on site inspection follows post-haste. If something gets out into the public, the company doing the last inspection suffers the liability. If the government agency fails to show up for on site inspection, they share the blame.

Simple.

What's particularly disturbing is they got a wake up call from ConAgra a few years back.

Bush gave Obama a LITLE HELP IN ESTABLISHING THAT SOCIALISTIC GOVERNMENT. Let's see if he expands or contracts it.

Of course, businesses are most efficient because they just take one look at how much it costs to do the right thing such as inspect the product and say "Get rid of that inspection department, it costs too much."

The government is set up like this; first you have the enforcement agencies. The people in enforcement must wade through the mountains of red-tape which are created by other bloated government bureaucrats trying to keep a job for themselves. Red-tape is the goverments (and the Democrats) friend. It keeps people employed and it keeps people hooked on the system. This system sets up the need for more and more government employees which must be payed for by private interprise through thier taxes. The incentive in the goverment is not to be efficient but to be inefficient. Anybody that has ever dealt with a government agency directly, whether it be state or federal, knows this (if they will throw aside their political agendas and tell the truth). And why are government employees like this? Because they have a monopoly. They have no competition and they have no reason to be efficient. The Dims know this. Somebody at this chum bucket today said something about the educational system being an example of how well the government works. Does anyone truly believe America's educational system is doing its job? I work in a highly technical field and I can tell you that many of the college graduates we interview for jobs barely have the basic skills to even pass pre-employment tests. It is truly pitiful. It seems our schools are more concerned with teaching politics than they are things such as math, english and history. So government as an overseer? What a joke. These trillions of our dollars they are throwing about so freely in the stimulus package is a travesty considering that they can't even run the most basic programs efficiently, let alone handle that kind of money. All anyone has to do and look at France. It is a prime example of government slothfullness and inefficiency. Their socialistic government, much like the one Obama is trying to fashion here in the US, is one of the best of examples on earth of how inefficient government can be. They have riots almost daily there. Is that what people want here?
