When Atlanta grabs a drink, it doesn’t always hit the bar

Maybe it’s the merry Oktoberfest mood this month, but lately, when I’ve grabbed a drink with pals, it hasn’t been at the neighborhood bar or restaurant, or on the porch swing at home. Instead it’s part of some other experience — a festival, a show, a museum, a garden. This weekend, I’m planning to check out the Black Cat Beer Bonanza for Atlanta Animal Rescue Friends, whose kitties I fostered before two lovable dogs entered my life. Those brewery tour-benefit combos seem like they’re becoming a regular way to have a night out, now.

So here are some of the un-bar watering holes I’ve noticed. Suggestions for others are welcome in the comments!

Atlanta Botanical Garden: Every Thursday in October, the Garden served up seasonal brews and music from 5-10 p.m. They suggest you bring a flashlight to check out Scarecrows in the Garden and Moore in America. The final installment is 5-10 p.m. Oct. 29.

Earl Smith Strand Theatre: The Strand has held Brew with a View nights on its rooftop terrace, which seems like an especially nice respite when there’s a busy festival down below. It’ll continue on Halloween with Boo with a View. Maybe you can spy some trick-or-treaters below? Check it out 6-10 p.m. Oct. 31.

Fernbank Museum of Natural History: Martinis and IMAX is like adult swim or dinosaur lovers. They  continue only through November, but there are some special Martinis and IMAX exhibit hours, movie screenings and prices till then. They run 5:30-10 p.m. Fridays through Nov. 27.

Center for Puppetry Arts: When I saw “The Ghastly Dreadfuls II” last week, it was so nice to grab a beer, catch up with a friend, see a show and wander the Center’s exhibits. There’s a regular cash bar before shows, but there are some special Halloween-y events this month, too. This show continues through Nov. 1, but keep an eye on the schedule for more adult shows.

Gallery walks: It’s always been nice to grab a glass at Eyedrum, a cup at WonderRoot or any other space that offers up art and music, but gallery walks are fantastic for low-key time with friends that lasts all evening. What’s great, especially, is that you can find hops, walks and strolls all over town and in the suburbs, too, throughout the month.

I am more afraid of Jesus showing up and condemnation at these events than alcohol. Blame it on the Al Key Haul!!!

I think you’re right, ATL & madmommy. I haven’t been to all of these events, but those I’ve visited were pretty calm. Bars and restaurants can be great fun, but I like going somewhere with an adult crowd that isn’t entirely focused on alcohol. You don’t have to drink at these events, but if gives you a chance to explore and enjoy these places without families or school groups. They’re fun then, too, but it’s nice to see them in a different way.
