Breast cancer survivor balloon release at Turner Field on Sept. 19. AJC/Jamie Gumbrecht
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but already we’re seeing walks, run, parties and fund-raisers to support research and awareness. Last weekend, I swung by the Breast Cancer Awareness reception at Turner Field and heard some pretty amazing stories from two- and three-time breast cancer survivors.
Before the Braves played (and won!), survivors released pink balloons from the field. It wasn’t the only time the crowd was on its feet that night, but it was the best time.
With weeks to go, there are already dozens of breast cancer awareness events listed on Access Atlanta.com.
If you know of other events going on, add them to the calendar by clicking the “+ Add A Listing” button to the top right. (Yep, it’s free.)
Meanwhile, here’s a look of the variety of events going on in the next few weeks.
- “We Want a Cure Wii Game Tournament” is the first fund-raiser for the Triple Pink Foundation. It costs $1,000 to enter a team of up to 10 players. The tournament begins at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 at Straits Restaurant in Atlanta.
- “Pink Passion for Bridal Fashion” gown sale will donate proceeds to the Susan G. Komen for Cure Greater Atlanta. The sale runs 1-6 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Holiday Inn in Roswell. Admission is $5 in advance, $10 day-of.
- Whole Health Expo will include mammograms, heart health screenings, flu shots, children’s activities and a 3-on-3 basketball tournament. It’s free, but individual checks might cost or require pre-registration. It runs 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 5, and benefits the American Cancer Society.
- “The Pink Party: A Celebration of Survivorship,” features health screenings, shopping, music, kid’s area and survivor parties. Admission is $25 and it runs 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
- Tour de Pink is a one-day benefit bike ride for the Young Survivors Coalition. It rolls out from Perimeter Mall on Oct. 17 with different races and rides for different skill levels.
- “The Softer Side” show opening explores the technique and inspiration of women artists, including Lorraine Christie, Nancy Franke, Marti Somers, Angie Renfro, Lisa Meyer Kairos, Susan Spies, Peggy Everett, Christina Doelling and others, and serves as a fund-raiser for breast cancer awareness. The free opening is 6-8 p.m. Oct. 22 at Huff Harrington Fine Art in Atlanta.

Survivors, their friends and family waved for a picture before Saturday's Braves game. Hi everybody! AJC/Jamie Gumbrecht

I visited a “breast cancer walk” on Saturday. It was a chilly, windy day, but the walkers were out, and pink shirts dotted the dismal day. These are ladies of hope, faith and courage. I salute them. I took my book “The Unfolding of a Rose” to the site. It is a story about my daughter who passed away with a diagnosis of breast cancer. A book signing will take place on Sunday, October 11th.
I wrote a blog on breast cancer awareness.http://theunfoldingofarose.wordpress.com/2009/10/07/breast-cancer-awareness-month/

Breast cancer is a year-round battle for many and as the last week of Breast Cancer Awareness Month unfolds, remember there are many ways to continue to contribute to the cause throughout the year. One of them is through the “Process Pink” program where your purchases with a credit card automatically include a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). The Process Pink stores and merchants donate a portion of their credit card processing fees to the NBCF, without any additional contribution by you! This great program was started by a father in Chicago who, after his family experience with breast cancer, developed Process Pink to help make a difference. In the Atlanta area, you can visit the Village Corner German Restaurant in Stone Mountain, GA and every credit card purchase will help the NBCF! More details are at http://www.processpink.com.
