If you thought you missed “America I AM,” before the touring exhibition took off to Los Angeles, good news: it’s staying in Atlanta through Sept. 27.

An AJC report today says organizers responded to public demand and requests to continue during the school year. They didn’t release attendance figures.

The exhibition documents more than 500 years of the African-American experience in America through more than 200 historic objects, documents and photos.

Some are local, culled from local participants in the Civil Rights Movement; others have come along way, like the “Doors of No Return” from Ghana.

Want to know more? Here’s more info on the type of artifacts on display, and an AJC interview with Tavis Smiley, the broadcaster whose idea became the “America I AM” exhibition.

If you have seen it, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. Please share them in the comments.

Want to go? “America I AM” runs through Sept. 27. $5-12 through Ticketmaster, $4-10 through Walmart. The Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center, 395 Piedmont Ave N.E., Atlanta. www.americaIam.org. (Atlanta Bargain Hunter has another tip on how to get free admission for kids.)
