Atlanta celebrates Michael Jackson with weekend tributes

A"Thriller" dance party in Underground Atlanta was organized to remember Michael Jackson in June, but we're not done yet! AJC file photo.

It’s been a few months now and Michael Jackson’s death is more the stuff of news updates than all-day coverage.

Atlanta just can’t stop dancing.

Here’s a list of upcoming Michael Jackson tributes, two of them this weekend, just in time for what would’ve been the King of Pop’s birthday.

Michael Jackson Tribute Celebration
7 p.m. Aug. 28. Free with donation. Georgia State University Alumni Hall, 30 Courtland St., Atlanta. 717-448-1610.
Live music by Vinson Baker, Fusion, The 54 and Level 7even, plus food, giveaways, contests, and lots and lots of dancing, as we can only assume Michael would have wanted. Come with a donation of canned food, clothing, school supplies or used instruments; they’ll be donated to local charities and Atlanta-area schools.

Moonwalk to Remember
1 p.m. registration, 2:30 p.m. walk, Aug. 29. $5 suggested donation. Walk begins at Midtown Diner, 112 10th St. N.E., Atlanta and goes to Piedmont Park.

This Michael Jackson-themed community walk will benefit community arts center WonderRoot. (Yep, I wrote about them earlier this week.) Come dressed in your best Michael gear, even if it’s just a lone white glove. So says the info: “Fans will gather to pay tribute as we lay a legendary artist to rest by keeping his message alive. A message that simply states that ‘We Are the World.’”

Who’s Bad: The Ultimate Michael Jackson Tribute Band
7 p.m. Oct. 2. $20-200. Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre, 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton. 770-819-7765,
Who’s Bad, an MJ tribute band from North Carolina, has been at it since 2004, taking its song list from “ABC” to “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” to “You Are Not Alone.” This time, they’ll play to benefit the South Cobb Band. You can get in for $20, or get the “Beat It” package, which includes two VIP seats and meal vouchers, for $80, or the “Thriller” package, which includes a VIP table for four a buffet and table service, for $200.

If you wanna see some proof to this “ultimate” claim, here’s the band’s promo video:

Offer up some suggestions, Rose! Maybe if someone gets an idea in their head, it’ll happen. :)
