Atlanta milestones, from Def Leppard to Paul McCartney

Atlanta seems to be a special kind of place for musicians make memories, trouble, history and news.

Two of the acts in town this weekend have some special milestones here.

There’s Def Leppard, which plays Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood on Saturday, but had another memorable show here more than 20 years ago. From the story, “Def Leppard does it BIG”:

Atlanta occupies a warm place in the band’s heart because it filmed most of “Live: In the Round, In Your Face” during a 1988 show at the Omni, where the boys from Sheffield set an attendance record that even Bruce Springsteen couldn’t beat.

And then there’s Paul McCartney. We’ve heard plenty of folks recounting The Beatles 1965 show here, but my favorite story in last Sunday’s paper explained what made this show different from all the others on the tour:

Beatles manager Brian Epstein later sent a note to the sound engineers declaring the Atlanta system “Excellent. Without question proved the most effective of all during our U.S. tour 1965.”

The show, the Beatles’ only appearance in Atlanta, went down in history as the only one in which the Fab Four could hear themselves over the shrieks of their frantic fans. How did Atlanta, a still-sleepy backwater in 1965, produce sound design beyond the ken of New York or Los Angeles?

Credit goes to a hi-fi store on Peachtree Street called Baker Audio, and its Georgia Tech-educated boss, F.B. “Duke” Mewborn. Mewborn handled sound for the show, and his set-up included something that every bar band uses today but was unheard of then: monitors.

Jamie, I’m Hope’s Dad and believe me, I enjoyed watching my Daughter
as much as she did watching the Beatles. That is one date I’ll always cherish, as she said that was 44 years ago but she’s still my baby.
Thanks for printing her comment of that wonderful evening.

My Dad braved an Atlanta Stadium full of screaming Beatles fans to take me to the August 1965 concert for my birthday. A once-in-a-lifetime memory from one of the first “Cool Dads” !!!!! 44 years later – we’ll be sharing my birthday this Thursday – and this memory always comes up! Thanks, Daddy !!!
