"Fools" by Town & Gown Players opens tonight at Athens Community Theatre. AJC photo by Jamie Gumbrecht.
Maybe you noticed a listing or a poster, the absolutely normal advertisements for a community theater show going up in Athens tonight.
It’s “Fools” by Neil Simon, a standard of small theater troupes, but performed this time by the Town & Gown Players of Athens Community Theatre. It’s the group’s first show since the April 25 shootings at the theater. Three of their longtime volunteers, Marie Bruce, Tom Tanner and Ben Teague were killed that day by Bruce’s husband, University of Georgia Professor George Zinkhan. His body was found two weeks later.
I headed to Athens on Wednesday to watch the last run-through without an audience, and to see how they’re doing after a few months of healing. I’ll post more details about that later, but till then, check out a photo gallery from the rehearsal.
Want to go? The show runs July 10-12 and 16-19 at Athens Community Theatre, 115 Grady Ave. in Athens. Shows begin at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and at 2:30 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $18 or $15 for seniors and students, except July 16, when tickets are half off. Tickets are available by calling (706) 208-8696. Receptions will be held after every performance this weekend. The show is dedicated to Bruce, Tanner and Teague.
