Once again we seemed to have survived impending doom. After much anticipation, preparation, discussion and debate, the prediction of our demise seems to have been a tad premature and we made it through this past weekend without witness of “the end”.
Oh, I’m not talking about the current predicament the Atlanta Thrashers organization and its fans find themselves in…I’m referring to the doomsday prophecy of Harold Camping who insisted that the end of the world would take place last Saturday. He had it all mathematically figured out, he told us, and sent forth his followers to warn us of it all.
Of course Saturday came and went…and last I check, we are all still here.

Thrashers faithful congregated Saturday to show support for their team at a tailgate party outside of Philip Arena. Inside the Atlanta Spirit held their Select A Seat event (Photo by Brendan)
This isn’t the first time Camping has come forward with this type of prognostication of Armageddon. He did this back in the nineties as well, which is interesting because I would figure someone really only gets one shot at this kind of prediction. In the end, you’re either right or…well, there goes one’s credibility.
Instead of standing before his band of believers and with a shrug of the shoulders saying, “…or not”, Camping simply explains that his math was a bit fuzzy and we’ll do this all again in October. That’s missing the mark by quite a distance if you ask me… but I guess in the grand scheme of time and world history, what’s a measly five months or so?
Interestingly enough, from all the sources I’ve spoken to of late, the NHL is still moving forward with it’s planning of a new hockey season just prior to the newly scheduled doomsday. I guess the league has chosen to adopt the same posture of “business as usual” as the Thrashers front office has taken by going ahead with its Select A Seat event this past weekend.
They did so in light of the seemingly inevitable story that the hockey gods are about to pass their own form of justice upon Thrasherville and hold the fans here responsible for the sins of the Atlanta Spirit, LLC. If so, this team will be spirited away to Winnipeg and we will be…ahem…left behind.
To that point, just last Thursday night news broke from the Mail and Globe that this deal was already done and come Tuesday…i.e. today…Gary Bettman would be standing in front of the podium to announce to the hockey world that Manitoba’s capital city would be given their second crack at the NHL.

Thrash poses with a fan Saturday afternoon. There has been no official word on whether or not he will become a snow bird next season (Photo by Brendan)
But then just yesterday NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the AJC that “it’s safe to say there will be no announcement on Tuesday”.
So then are we then able to toss this story on top of the already heaping pile of discredited rumors of our demise? Or is it just, as Camping would claim, a simple case of delaying the inevitable.
Honestly I don’t know which one is at player here, but the signs are not looking good for Thrasherville.
First, there is the report from Chris Vivlamore that the Thrashers are now down to as many interested buyers as they have playoff victories. Given the lateness of the hour, this is certainly un-good news. Then there are the stories circling about that the Manitoba Moose of the AHL are soon to be announcing a relocation to St. John’s, Newfoundland. Such a move would clear the way for any new NHL team play their home games in MTS Center, which seats just over 15,000 for hockey.
Of course there is the news that the AS, LLC has recently rescinded exclusive negotiating rights for the Hawks and Philips Arena from John Moore. This now allows for anyone interested in purchasing both professional teams and the arena to do so, but to date there are no reports of a serious, viable suitor.
Even if one were to surface, the Spirit Boys’ decision to enter into exclusive negotiations for the Hawks and Philips may have successfully bought enough time to keep anyone from seriously entering into any negotiations for all three. Again, the hour is late and to catch up to where TNSE is with their talks with the Atlanta Spirit would take quite an effort.

Do these words by the NHL commissioner apply to all 30 teams or just a select few? Time will tell (Photo by Brendan)
Given that, even though I do not claim to know the hour or the day of Thrasherville’s doom, I will say that I think any such news would have to come sometime this week. Seeing where we are on the calendar, time is ticking not only on hockey in Atlanta but also on the league to get a finalized schedule out. Plus there is a draft and free agent season to prepare for.
The news could fall on just after the posting of this blog, tomorrow or late in the week. ..or I guess there is still a chance for an “or not” moment and no such announcement comes. But regardless of which way this deal goes down, a decision must be reached and announced soon.
In the mean time, there is still NHL playoff hockey to discuss if you wish. Boston and Vancouver each now find themselves but a win away from a Stanley Cup Finals berth, the Canucks could claim their spot tonight at home and the Bruins get their chance tomorrow night in Tampa.
If both of them are successful and do advance, then I would move to 12-2 in my postseason predictions. I would then look to my SCF picks to try and pull even with Red Light, who would be 13-1 after three rounds. Either way, I still haven’t forgotten that I owe him an adult beverage or five at TJs Bar & Grill for his accurate call on the Sharks-Wings series.
The good new is that, according to Harold Camping, I have until October 21 to make good on that wager.

WPG Jets 2011 – Apology accepted. I assure you I have not been on your blogs, nor do I plan to. It amazes me that people who are supposedly hockey fans take delight in taking shots when a city is down. I am actually a frequent poster here under a different name. I simply choose not to use it when responding to the trolls. Welcome aboard!

Farm Boy – $200 a game? For me, that would be every game of the three season period from 2007 – 2010 when I sprung for Club level season tickets. Last year, I dropped them in hopes of sending a message to the Astoundingly Slimey Group. Any more questions?
Great video at http://www.keepthethrashers.com/. May be too late, but I’m sending e-mails to everyone on their “What Can Fans Do” list.

Thank you, sorry again for misunderstanding. There are good fans on both sides. Just reading how some of the Atlanta fans feel about losing this team really tells me Bettman has got to be replaced. Most people think it should have been Phoenix. Most people in Wpg anyways, would feel better about this whole thing if it was them. I can never understand idiots that kick you when your down. Sorry Thrasher Fans but its a done deal they are moving to Winnipeg, they will announce after the Conference Finals or after the Cup Finals, but you won’t be they only ones duped I think Phoenix is on the move too they just get to say good bye properly come the 2011-2012 season. Bettman is looking at US economics and not seeing the light so Canada gets the sale items at the bottom of the barrel. No Fault to ATL fans other than there is not enough of you.
Phoenix will leave regardless most likely next season maybe 5 years from now but the Glendale location is that teams downfall and also not enough fans. Winnipeg produces more hockey fans than ATL and PHX so looking at the percentage to the populus Winnipeg has the upper hand.

It is so unbelievably stupid for Atlanta and Winnipeg fans to be fighting, especially the ones who claim to have intimate understanding of the economics and fan demographics of the “other side’s” location.
For those Winnipeggers who are criticizing Atlanta attendance, wake up and shake off the revisionist history. Winnipeg and Atlanta attendance figures aren’t all that far off from each other, and even factoring the horrid design of the old Winnipeg Arena doesn’t suddenly turn Winnipeg into a city that sold out every game.
To those Atlantans (is that the right term? I apologize if it’s not) that are under the impression that Winnipeg is a destitute city buried under ice 340 days of the year in which the only source of entertainment is hockey – saying it in print doesn’t make it so.
Both sides need to chill out (pun fully intended) – it makes no sense for this to be a war as it’s completely out of the hands of the fans on either side and ripping each other apart just makes people look like douchebags. I bet if we all sat down together, we’d find that aside from winter weather and population numbers, our cities have more commonalities than differences.

Average attendance at Philips Arena since Thrashers inaugural season (1999/2000): 14914
Max capacity at MTS Center: 15003
Difference = 89 fans
One cannot label this as growth of the game, in my opinion.
Congratulations to the NHL fans in Winnipeg for what seems to be a team returning to their city after a long and painful absence. I am happy that they will get their wish. It is disappointing this victory for Winnipeg fans is at the cost of my favorite team.

Only thing that is keeping me interested in buying EA’s NHL 12 if we lose the Thrashers is that you can pick original jerseys of relocated teams (you can play calgary in the old Flames jerseys)
I can always turn the announcers down and use Thrashers jerseys, if I am truly desperate for a Thrashers fix.
If I had to pick between NHL 12 and having my team stick around, I’d rather have my team stick around.
Now if something happens to the Glads then I’ll be done with Hockey.
Who is to say we end up with an Expansion team in Atlanta by the end of the decade? Playing at the Gwinnett Arena no less? Look at Minnesota. in 1990 they were the North Stars, in 2000 they had the wild.
Anything is possible.
But I am hopelessly optimistic.

I said it before there is a reason why the NFL owners locked out the players US economics don’t allow pro sports to be run lik eit used to be. And hockey is feeling it as well there is hockey interest in ATL and PHX but hockey would be first to be cut from the monthly bills. Big populus with not enough money and/or interest for th egame of hockey is a economic fail for the NHL.The Atlanta metropolitan area, has 5,268,860 people Winnipeg 694,668 … but each city would have same amount of people attend an NHL game so Winnipeg wins on actual percentage. Same with TV contract mor ehousehold in ATL yes but if they rather watch latest installment of Housewifes or Cops a % million populus does not make th edifference.

Joshua, Winnipeg wins on current percentage, but Atlanta wins on upside potential. We aren’t claiming that 5 million people will start clamoring for tickets if the Thrash stay. But we are saying the arena will stay full if the owners don’t cheat, steal, lie and otherwise screw the fans year after year. Watch the video at http://www.keepthethrashers.com/ if you’d like to understand more about attendance in Atlanta.

Anyone coming here to troll – There are people like myself who spend their money ON HOCKEY AND HOCKEY ALONE. I’ve got 9 Thrashers jerseys and even bought my car because the color matched our blue jerseys. Stop telling us how we spend our money WHEN WE KNOW HOW WE ARE SPENDING IT.
What happened here has almost zero to do with the economy and more to do with the fact that Basketball was all Ownership wanted. If David McDavid hadn’t been screwed out of his (rightful) ownership of Thrashers, Hawks and the Arena then this would be a moot point and the Winnipeggers would still be attacking Glendale.
We don’t get a lame duck season – even when you guys got screwed you had time to prepare. Atlanta didn’t even get that. At all.
I hope that the Atlanta Hawks become an afterthought to the point they also are relocated to Winnipeg. You guys will wonder (just like we do) why on earth basketball (especially the hawks) was worth losing the Thrashers.

Boy, am I relieved that Farm Boy moved out to the coast. We really don’t want that kind of ignorant troll associated with Manitoba. He claims he was born here, and that in itself is bad enough.
I am completely in agreement with WPG Jets 2011. Atlanta was cursed with apathetic ownership and that is the sole reason for your team being deemed unsuccessful. I say “deemed” as you were never given a chance really. I do feel for you fans. I have been reading the forums here for the past couple of months and this is truly one of the best discussion groups on hockey.
I have worked in the southern US a few times (although not Atlanta specifically). I have found that the warm, hospitable and friendly nature of people from the southern US is very similar to most Canadian attitudes. I find it sad that trolls on the internet prevent that truth from being obvious and seem to divide us who are generally kindred spirits.

ATL never showed the a high enough commitment to Hockey since the Thrashers arrived and it can not be ownership every single time. You do have good hockey fans and it sucks you loose the team but for the potential the NHL thought ATL would bring it didn’t pay up, certainly the economy didn’t back you up ATL as PHX has great NHL calibre hockey fans but not enough. I don’t doubt anyones passion in ATL for hockey but there are too few to step up to the plate, no matter who lies steals or scews you over … you support the team, the players and you represent the city. I feel bad for ATL loosing their team but overall the needed support is not there. Look at Toronto they cheat, they lie they scew players and fans over and when was the last winning season??? Well, we’re all gonna save money, now that the Thrashers are leaving. So, what are we going to spend it on now? A boat? A new car? Big screen TV. X-box games? Cable/Satellite TV? Bigger, better family vacations? It’s time to start having these conversations.
The worst of it, really, is that many of the Thrasher fans felt they were “investing” in this team, from 1999-2008. They thought, “Hey, we’re gonna win a Stanley Cup here, one day. Gotta prop ‘em up.” In the end, all our accountants, and TalkShow Host Dave Ramsey, will chastise us about where our Roth IRA, 401K, or 529 Plan might be today, if we hadn’t plunked down $8,000 to $10,000 a year in Thrasher tickets, for a decade. Stop. It’s really just best not to think about it. But if you must think about it, think of it this way. “Did you live your life?” “Did you enjoy coming out to games?” “Did you have fun interacting with your fellow Thrasher fans?” “Was it fun to talk about it, and blog about it?” If the answers to these questions are yes, then you shouldn’t feel any regret, other than that the NHL is no longer an option for your entertainment dollars. There are still the Gladiators, after all.

I would just like to know why Bettman refuses to step up and say to the ASG they are not selling the team to somebody that will move them out of Atlanta. Furthermore, if he had any balls at all he would tell the ASG if they cannot stomach anymore loses, if there are any, to file for bankruptcy like every other struggling business owner. If they would be forced to do that, then a new buyer would be able to swoop in and buy the team(s) and arena at a reasonable price and keep the team in Atlanta. Oh, but I have the answer to my question(s) already! $60,000,000! Just makes you sick don’t it! What a joke the NHL is!

Yep, that was precisely my thoughts for those years, and 2009 was the year I gave up my season tix when the reality set in of the futility with Waddell and the Spirit in place.
I am severely depressed over this. I know it’s just a game, but this was all so avoidable. Yes the Spirit and Waddell are to blame, but ultimately the NHL is the one we really need to be taking a long look at, they did nothing for us. Nada. After standing up for the Pens, Buffalo, Nashville, Tampa, Phoenix, we get squat. I don’t see how anyone can feel the same about the NHL after this, including fans from other cities.

Eileen, I’m planning a trip to Raleigh, NC next year, to catch some ‘Canes hockey at RBC. I’d love to get to Nashville, too. I’ve never been to their rink. I suppose it’s time, huh?
Red Light, are you going to keep doing the Red Light report? I ask because … once the AJC hockey blogs are down, that’ll be it for hockey talk in these parts, I believe. I don’t think Schultz or Bradley will do any columns on how the Thrashers are doing in Winnipeg. And even if he does, that’s one blog topic. Hardly a Thrashers forum. Believe it or not, I will continue to root for the franchise in Winnipeg. I will watch on Center Ice. And I’ll never have to worry about a “blackout” due to a contract dispute between Fox SportSouth and Comcast. Truthfully, from the bottom of my broken heart, all I’ve ever wanted for this franchise … was to have ownership that would CARE for it, CULTIVATE it, and treat it fairly, with respect, and accountability. There is every outward appearance … that I have finally gotten my wish. I just never imagined it would be True North Sports and Entertainment, located in Manitoba. Despite what some folks here might think, I do think the Thrashers/Jets/Moose could become successful there, so long as the salary cap remains in effect, and the next CBA addresses, far more seriously, the topic of cap circumvention. The Rangers stashed $6 million Wade Redden in the AHL. The Chicago Blackhawks “loaned” Cristobal Huet to a European league. It was all ‘legal.’ Contracts like Savard’s, Hossa’s, Briere’s … all got approved prior to the Kovalchuk deal finally forcing the NHL to address these kinds of cap circumvention contracts. If the NHL abandons the “Dollar cost averaging” for a cap hit, and just assigns the actual salary as the cap hit, Winnipeg could do very well.
As for the City of Atlanta … I honestly think we’re LESS of a city, now. We had all four pro sports. We let it go, without a fight. No legal obstruction was threatened, like in Phoenix. I guess the plan, moving forward, is that the 41 NHL games will be replaced by ’soldout’ concert dates. Or some would have you believe that. Do concerts charge NHL pricing?

Congrats to Vancouver, for rallying with that late goal. The Sharks were 13 seconds away from forcing Game Six, back in San Jose. But the Canucks actually “closed” this time. It was a fluky goal, but a legitimate goal, nonetheless. Vancouver returns to the Finals for the 1st time since their 7th game heartbreak against the NY Rangers. Vancouver is trying to buck the odds, as a President’s trophy winner, to win the Cup. This is the 2nd series they’ve clinched in overtime. Going back to the Olympics, where Canada won in overtime, on the Crosby goal, it’s been an amazing 15 months or so … for British Columbia, Canada.
For TV-ratings purposes, the NHL needs Boston in there. Boston-Vancouver should draw very well. That’s why I still say Tampa Bay will sneak in. Probably a couple of OT winners to get there. Then, it’s the Bolts and Canucks for the Cup. I’m 9-4, through 13 series. If I finish 9-5, I’ll consider it a grand success for the 2011 playoffs. Red Light just may go 14-1.
