The Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks finish one-two in the Western Conference this season and will square off to see who advances to the Stanley Cup Finals. Both teams find themselves at this point after surviving comeback scares during the playoffs. In round-one the Canucks were up three games to none against the defending champs Chicago Blackhawks and were forced to win a game seven…the Sharks faced the same deal against the Detroit Red Wings in the second round, finally getting past the Big Red Borg last night 3-2.
They met 4 times this year with the Canucks going 3-0-1.
On November 26 The Canucks pounded San Jose 6-1 then won again 4-3 just after New Years. The last two meetings were decided by way of a shootout with the Sharks winning 2-1 on January 20 and the Canucks coming out with a 5-4 victory on March 10.
The Canucks finished the regular season 54-19-9 and their 117 points won the Presidents’ Trophy. They are making their first trip to the Western Conference Finals since 1994.

Their penalty-kill play helped push them past the Nashville Predators as they denied the Preds 20 times on 21 man-advantage situations, including going five-for-five during the series-clinching game-six win. The one goal they did allow to Nashville was made up for with a shorty on the other end.
Vancouver went 4-18 on the power play during their second round victory over Nashville.
Ryan Kessler’s 15 overall points, (5 goals, 10 assists) leads the Canucks in scoring. At the time he’s tied with Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk who finished the playoffs with 4 goals and 11 assists.
“He was unbelievable,” Henrik Sedin said of Kessler. “He plays PK, power play and 5-on-5, and he does it all really well. It was fun to watch him this series, and we’re going to need him to continue to play this way.”
“[Kessler] obviously decided to drive the bus, and he obviously was our dominant force on the ice.” Head coach Alain Vigneault added. “He played real strong at both ends of the rink and we needed that performance. And we need it to continue.”
But he understands others will have to help pull their weight in the ECF.
“We need some other guys to come on board here because it’s not going to get easier, it’s going to get tougher.”
Daniel Sedin’s 6 goals lead the Canucks, (6 goals, 4 assists). Brother Henrik has 8 assists and 1 goal.
Robert Luongo is 8-5 with 2.25 GAA, .917 SV% and 2 SO. He had a 1.64 GAA and .932 SV% in the six games versus Nashville.
Forward Mikael Samuelsson needed help getting off the ice during the third period of Saturday’s Game 5 loss, suffering a lower-body injury. He didn’t travel to Nashville for the game-six win over the Preds and is not expected to return anytime soon.
As for the San Jose Sharks…they won the Pacific Division with a record of 48-25-9 and 105 points. This the third time they’ve reached the conference finals, the second time in as many years, and have yet to make get to the SCF.
They find themselves here after knocking off a very pesky LA Kings team before having to gut out a seven-game war with the Wings, no small fete according to team captain Joe Thornton.
“I’m sure there were a lot of doubters who said we probably couldn’t do this,” he said after Thursday series-clincher. “But that’s two years in a row we’ve beaten a pretty good team, so I think we’re a pretty good team now, too.”
Ryan Clowe’s 13 overall points lead the Sharks during the playoffs. His return to the lineup after missing game six with an upper-body injury clearly gave a boost to the Sharks in game seven.
Devin Setoguchi and Logan Couture each led with 6 goals. Both Couture and Setoguchi scored goals in the first period last night to stake their team to a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Thornton has a pair of goals and nine assists.
Goalie Antti Niemi is seeking his second trip to the Stanley Cup Finals, doing so last year with the Blackhawks. He’s 7-5 so far this postseason with a 3.01 GAA and .906 SV%.
As one should expect with a conference finals that match up the numbers 1 and 2 seeds, this should prove to be a very entertaining series. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it goes seven games, but I think I’m going with the Canucks to win in six.

hockeymom92 – Thank you very much. I thought the auther of the article did a very fine job. Needless to say his mom and I are very proud of Chris indeed.
We “rewarded” him today by allowing him to assist us and his older brother in repairing/replacing the field stone front steps.

WBF, definitely will be an interesting series to watch, with goaltending in mind. Tonight, the Bolts scored three (3) goals in less than 90 seconds. And Steve Downie missed a ‘gimme’ on the doorstep. Thomas robbed him. But, it’s still 3-1, Tampa Bay, with 17:00 left in the 3rd period.
Why do I find myself rooting for Tampa Bay?? I don’t have any hatred of Boston, at all. I guess … my loyalty is to the SE division, even if it is Tampa Bay.

I finally figured out why I am cheering for the Lightning after watching both Horton and Lucic sucker punch the Lightning players. What a classless organization.
Rawhide, Congrats on the article on your son.

Looks like the Bolts came prepared to play. Timmy Thomas, not so much. But that was just the first game in what should be a long series. Happy to have NHL playoffs back on the tube after a day or so off. It seemed like a month.
Rawhide, what was the article hockeymom mentioned? Did we miss something?

hockeygoon79 – She is referring to this this article in “In The Game High School Sports Magazine” in which my youngest tax exemption was featured as May’s academic athelete.
Tampa Bay got all over the Bruins in a hurry last night…congrats to them for taking game 1.

I’m pulling for Tampa because, mainly, one of the late-arriving sheep kept procwaiming that the Thrashers were much better than they were…and kept “backing” it up with inane observations with self-delusional statements of being in the know or on the inside.
With every Lightning win, I think of you Cornbwead. You are Sara-reincarnated (as she rarely shows up anymore–good reason for that, too).
(Well, that and the fact that I respect an organization which can actually make CHANGES to things in the attempt to get better; proving that a committed organization CAN get better with the proper decision-making; It’s so refreshing considering the putrid stagnation we’ve seen in the management structure of the Thrashers and the neverending incompetence from differing ownerships from day-one…)

Congrats to your son and both of his amazing parents Rawhide. What an impressive article. For thee record, Rich Peverly is personally rooting for the Thrashers to stay in Atlanta. He said it is a hockey town. He defended the fans by saying that one playoff appearance in 10 years is not good enough. Also, he said the ownership situation of court battles is not good for anyone in the organizaiton. I like Rich, but I am still rooting for Tampa to win. They have been through so many ups and downs in that organization. It is nice to see them winning.

Rawhide-sorry for the tardy congratulations to you and your family for a job very well done. Knowing you,l nobody should be surprised by your son’s success. Way to go.
Brendan-if the Thrashers do leave town, I will swing my support to the teams in the South such as Nashville, Carolina and Tampa Bay. If all works as it looks, I hope these 3 teams continually win the Stanley Cup in 3 year rotations! If nothing else than to show the douche-ettes up north that hockey can succeed in the south with the right leadership, If only we had such leadership, but that ship has sailed or is getting ready to leave port.

If Atlanta leaves, my new # 1 team will probably be the Carolina Hurricanes. Followed closely by Nashville. Then Tampa Bay.
WBF, the thought suddenly dawns on me that, if the Sharks actually win the Cup, they two California expansion teams of the early 90’s (San Jose in ‘91 and Anaheim in ‘93,) will have won a Cup before the L.A. Kings get one, and they came into the league in 1967. That’s gotta sting, if you’re a Kings fan.

Brendan, remember that the Canucks came in the league 3 years after the Kings along with the Sabres. Kings and Blues are the only 2 teams left on the clock from the 1967 expansion, with e Kings having ever made it to the finals, the Blues have not made it to finals in over 40 years.
Question-is it official now that “The Balkin’s” interest is now dead?

Brendan,..thanks for helping channel Bill Buckner.
On the sitck measurement,…yes, it is a tried and true tactic,…and anything goes in the play-offs.
Well, just about anything,..should Lucic get a suspension?

WBF: No, it’s not “official.” Re-read some of Kincade’s tweets.
But even then, we should not really depend on Twitter for real, breaking news. News stations in town, and even here at the AJC, have been clamoring to be the first to declare the Thrashers “dead.”
Until an official announcement is made, take everything with a grain of salt. Trust no one.

San Jose tried to sit on this 2-1 lead, here in the 3rd period. It’s now, 3-2, Vancouver. And yes, it was Dany Heatley in penalty box when Vancouver took the lead on the PPG, by Henrik Sedin.
Anyone else getting tired of these penalty box hecklers? In their latest ploy, they unfurl a Canadian flag. Well gee, a Canadian flag should sure upset Dany Heatley, huh? In my opinion, it’s a little too much spectacle.

There are numerous misconceptions about the situation surrounding the Atlanta Thrashers possible relocation to Winnipeg. This video covers misconceptions about attendance, how long the team has been for sale, and the NHL’s efforts to keep the Thrashers in Atlanta.
