2011 NHL playoffs second round predictions

Just one day after the first round was finally wrapped up, round two of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals gets underway tonight. So we’ll not waste any time and get right to our predictions.

As you do so, also take time to look back at how your first round predictions turned out. Personally, I went 7-1 missing only the Flyers/Sabres outcome. What is interesting to note here, however, is that all eight teams that won a majority of the vote in the Fan Polls two weeks ago actually went on to win their round one series. So reach around and give yourselves a nice pat on the back as you all went a collective 8-0.

Now, let’s see if you can duplicate that effort.

Eastern Conference

#1 Washington vs. #5 Tampa Bay: Washington won season series 4-1-1.

These are not the same Washington Capitals as we’ve seen from the previous postseasons. They have a little bit more to them than simply being an offensive powerhouse. They get reliable play on the blueline these days and the goalkeeping has not been a liability.

Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin each scored three goals for the Caps during their 4 games to 1 victory over New York. Ovechkin also chipped in with 3 assists while Semin finished with a +4 rating. Defenseman Mike Green scored once and added four assists and was a +3.

Your Pick

  • #1 Washington (73%, 366 Votes)
  • #5 Tampa Bay (27%, 132 Votes)

Caps keeper Michal Neuvirth had a 1.38 GAA, .946 SV% with one shutout in the five games against the Rangers.

Last night the Lightning completed their series comeback win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. After falling behind 3 games to 1 they stormed back winning three straight. Goalie Dwayne Roloson was key to their victory in game seven as he stopped all 36 shots he faced. His efforts made Sean Bergenheim’s second period goal stand up as the game-winner.

Overall, Roloson was 4-3 against the Pens with a 1.77 GAA, .949 SV% and that one all-important shutout in game seven. His 243 were the most of any netminder in round one.

One other key for the Bolts was the play of their penalty-killing unit. They were successful in denying the Penguins 34 times on 35 man advantage situations. They’ll need more of the same against the Caps.

The man responsible for the Lightning PK unit is assistant coach Wayne Fleming, who is undergoing treatment for a brain tumor in Tampa. Head coach Guy Boucher dedicated the series win to Fleming.

To their credit, the Penguins presented a game puck to Tampa Bay to give to Fleming, something that the Bolts bench boss was very grateful for.

“I thought the Pittsburgh Penguins showed a lot of class, giving us the puck right after the game, and we are going to give that puck to Mr. Fleming”, he said after the 1-0 win Wednesday night.

If both teams get repeat performances from their men between the pipes, this one could be a great one to watch and go the distance. I think that will be the case and the series will indeed go seven games.

My pick: Tampa Bay in seven.

#2 Philadelphia vs.#3 Boston: Boston won season series 3-0-1.

The Bruins finally shook off the Montreal Canadiens with a 4-3 overtime win Wednesday night. Nathan Horton’s goal 5:43 into OT was his second game-winner past regulation and three of Boston’s four wins took more than 60 minutes to achieve.

  • #2 Philadelphia (47%, 235 Votes)
  • #3 Boston (53%, 260 Votes)

They’ll now take on the Philadelphia Flyers who themselves needed all seven games to finally get past the Buffalo Sabres, despite being shut out twice by Ryan Miller.

Claude Giroux’s 9 overall points, (1 goal,8 assists) was second only to Montreal’s Michael Cammalleri’s 10, (3 goals, 7 assists), during the opening round of this year’s playoffs. Danny Briere’s six goals led the Flyers and only Anaheim’s Teemu Selanne has also scored that many thus far in postseason.

But unlike Selanne, Briere will have a chance to build upon it.

One big question mark for Philly is when they might see center Jeff Carter return to action. The Flyers leader in goals during the regular season injured his right knee during game four.

Tim Thomas went the distance in goal against Montreal and came out of the series with a 2.25 GAA and .926 SV%. He logged 453:49 TOI during the seven games. Montreal’s Carey Price actually topped that with 455:29 TOI.

It’s a good thing the Bruins got a lot of experience winning in OT during the playoffs over the last couple of weeks. I think they may have to burn the midnight oil a few more times against the Flyers. And I’ll give Boston the edge here in part to their ability to do so, plus their edge in goal with Thomas.

My pick: Boston in seven.

Western Conference

#1 Vancouver vs. #5 Nashville: Season series split 2-2.

The Nashville Predators find themselves in unchartered waters…the second round of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs. After knocking off the Anaheim Ducks, they now share those waters with the Presidents’ Trophy winning Vancouver Canucks.

Your Pick

  • #1 Vancouver (75%, 346 Votes)
  • #5 Nashville (25%, 116 Votes)

Vancouver, as you all know, escaped their opening round series with the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks, being forced to a seventh game despite taking the first three. Some will speculate that this took a lot out of the Canucks and will hamper their chances. However, I think it’s just as likely that what happened to them…or almost happened to them…can prove to be just what they needed, a bit of a wake up call.

One can only bet that nothing will be taken for granted by Vancouver from here on out…no series lead will be considered safe.

The Predators will have Martin Erat back in the lineup. The forward missed the final two games of the series with Anaheim following a hit from Jarkko Ruutu. Erat’s 50 overall points tied for the team lead during the regular season.

The two teams will get round two underway tonight out in Vancouver.

My pick: Vancouver in six.

#2 San Jose vs. #3 Detroit: Sharks won season series 3-1.

Rested and ready, the Red Wings will wing their way westward to try and reel in the Sharks. The Big Red Borg have been waiting patiently for the second round to finally get here after leaving the carcass of the Coyotes along the playoff curb in the middle of last week.

Your Pick

  • #2 San Jose (32%, 147 Votes)
  • #3 Detroit (68%, 307 Votes)

Total Voters: 454

Jimmy Howard enters the series sporting a 2.50 GAA and .915 SV% in the playoffs after stopping 108 of the 118 shots he faced against Phoenix. Antti Niemi was roughed up a bit in the six games against LA, escaping the series with a 3-2 record and a 3.99 GAA and 8.36 SV%. Antero Niittymaki was 1-0 with a 0.66 GAA and .967 SV% during the 91-pus minutes he played against the Kings.

Ryan Clowe led San Jose with 7 overall points, (4 goals, 3 assists), during round one while Pavel Datsyuk’s 2 goals and 4 assists led the Wings.

The Sharks took three of the four games played during the regular season an may benefit from coming off their series win over Los Angeles with just enough days off in between to get some rest, but not so much they could lose some of that playoff intensity edge.

However, as I’ve told some of you before, this is the playoffs and if there I’ve learned anything during my almost 46 years on this earth…you don’t tug on Superman’s cape, you don’t spit into the wind, you don’t pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger and you don’t bet against the Wings come playoff time.

My pick: Detroit in six.

Bilton, Harry, and Kracker, we have the same picks.

Russ, we differ on only one series this round: Detroit vs. San Jose. I definitely think the Red Wings can win that series, but I will take the Sharks. It’s probably good, Russ, that you diversify, as your picks see 1 vs. 2 in the East and 1 vs. 3 in the West, whereas, I have nothing but the top two seeds in each Conference. If those are the actual results, who would have bet on that EVER happening in the NHL, under this CBA, of parity? Nothing but the top two seeds in each Conference? Preposterous, no?? Well, actually, that’s the supposed goal of the seedings, to reward the top teams with the most favorable matchups. It just never actually happens that way.

Or has it? Red Light, under this CBA, or under any previous NHL playoff format, has the top two seeds ever made it to the CF in both Conferences (East/West, Prince of Wales/Campbell)? I think the answer is, “no?” Would it statistically follow, after lo these many years and decades … that it’s now WAY OVERDUE for such an occurrence to happen? I remember, clearly, in 2001, that the Avalance was the # 1 seed in the West and that NJ was the # 1 seed in the East, and that the two met in the Stanley Cup Finals. But I have long forgotten who each of those teams played in the CF in 2001. I want to say it was the Flyers vs. the Devils, but that might have been from 2000. For the West, I want to say it was Colorado vs. Detroit. I don’t think it was Dallas. Maybe it was St. Louis, who around that time, won the President’s Trophy. But I need to look all of that up, because I can’t truly remember.

To recap, my picks are: Washington over TBL in six games. I like Philly to pull the upset of Boston, in seven games, even though the Flyers are the higher seed. I just smell upset. I think the Bruins are the favorites, and with good reason. In the West, I like San Jose’s chances vs. the Red Wings, in seven games. And though I will be rooting for the Predators, my pick is Vancouver, in seven spirited games. So yes, I’ve got three of four (3/4) series going the distance in the CSF. The only series I see ending sooner … is the Capitals over the Lightning.

Remember, I’m pretty much beholden to my preseason picks of Washington vs. Vancouver, with Vancouver vs. SJ as the CF. (I had Washington vs. Pittsburgh in the Eastern CF.) I might as well keep those picks. I’ve felt strongly about them for a long, long time now. The troubling series is Philly vs. Boston. I know I’ll regret not taking the Bruins, but somehow, some way, I think the Flyers pull it out, in DOUBLE OVERTIME of Game Seven. That’s how close I think it could really be. I don’t really have a team to root for in the Bruins-Flyers, so I’ll just root for “pain.”

I don’t drink at all when I know I have to drive, yet I have been charged – the situation was a bit different: I had a party for my graduation (yes, I was drinking) and I moved my car from the driveway to the curb, maybe 20 feet, to play a game of HORSE with some friends. I turned it off was getting out when a elderly (like 80) neighbor hit me. Since I was technically in the car at the time, even though it was off, I still got charged (BTW, she also got a DUI – very sad to see an old lady get put in cuffs). The officer was very apologetic, but the law is the law. Driving on the roads while intoxicated is a very serious thing, and I am sure that Dan Heatley is haunted by his actions every single day of his life.

Rolo was genius by Yzerman, as was Brewer IMO, because they needed size and a guy who can play a shutdown role. Has he been perfect? No, but he has added something for the Bolts.

The Fisher pick-up, while somewhat expensive, was great for the Preds too. Frolik paid dividends for Chicago, Pevs for Boston, Ian White for San Jose and definitely Kelly too. Shrewd moves because they filled needs, particularly in the playoffs.

I’m not sure why you would single out the Heatley comments as a point where people shouldn’t express their opinions. Based on the facts that I do know (several trade demands and complaints about losing PP time) I think Heatley is a selfish a$$hole. “Frolik paid dividends for Chicago”

Never liked that pickup, sure he scored a goal or two that were key, but the pickup the Hawks needed to make was to replace some of the grit and checking they had lost in the offseason, that would have been what put them over the top of the Couv, they were outhit and outchecked that series and that’s why they lost.

Heatley’s a class A jagoff and I’m sure there’s other jagoffs on NHL squads that got along with him, birds of a feather and all, but I agree that he’s a jag. I personally experienced it after one of the early years final game ticket holder events they had, but wrote that off as him being a young kid, young millionaires can be cocky I’m sure, but when it became public that his father was orchestrating things for him here behind the scenes and that they asked for Waddell to outright release him the summer after he returned from the accident, I wrote that kid off as one class A jagoff . . . I’d say worst teammate in hockey is as close to the truth as anything . . .

I don’t know Dan Heatley personally. All I am saying is that yes, he was reckless and it turned into one of the worst tragedies a human and a family can experience. I feel for the Snyder family and am positive they don’t think it was on purpose (really, how could it be unless DH wanted to die in the accident as well). As a former teacher I have had several students die in drunk driving accidents – it is mind bending. If you have kids of that age, they are going to drink. Yeah, I know you don’t want them to but they will. So drill it into their heads that even though you would upset at them drinking, you will get over it and it is way better to call you up and ask for a ride. I gave all of my students my cell #, especially on Prom week, and said they could call any time of night if they needed help. Sorry for the soap box there.

Tonight’s games:

Washington 5 Tampa 4 in OT

Detroit 3 SJ 2 – though I really cannot definitively state with confidence that SJ will lose.

In closing, really, I am very happy for the newly weds in England, but honestly I don’t get all the hype. I get some of it and have read up on it, but the 24-7 coverage is a bit much. Just sayin’.

Now, if the NHL could just have squeezed an NHL game into Buckingham Palace during the wedding, I think their marketing campaign might be done for the next little bit. 1.7 billion watched? That many people don’t have a life? Apparently, so. Then again, I don’t care who watched and who didn’t. I’m the “freedom of expression” guy. You want to watch a wedding in Europe, and get up at 3AM to do it, I won’t tell you can’t, or shouldn’t. Or should feel bad about it. It’s your life. Live it the way you see fit.

I tell ya what I’d set an alarm for, at 3AM. Space Aliens arriving, and they want to hold a press conference to share what they’ve learned in making the journey from their planet to ours. And they’re arriving with the cure for cancer and AIDS, just in case we don’t have one yet.

In the Caps vs. the Lightning, I honestly don’t have a team to root for in that one. I guess, because they are Cupless in their history, I will root for Washington. Plus, I picked them. I suppose I should root for the pick to succeed. In Boston vs. Philly, I don’t have a dog in that hunt. But, I think I’d rather see Philly win. And not just because I picked them. Here’s a team that, in 2007, finished DEAD LAST in the NHL, and LOST the Draft Lottery to Chicago. Three (3) years later, they wind up in the SCF vs. Chicago. (It’s not uncommon for 3 years to be the amount of time needed to go from DEAD LAST to SCF. TB was last in 2001, won the Cup in 2004. Carolina was last in 2003, won the Cup in 2006. Philly was last in 2007, reach SCF in 2010.) The team’s GM, Paul Holmgren, embarked on a remarkable rebuilding campaign, that began with James vanRiemsdyk and Braydon Coburn. They put a run together to reach the CF in 2008, the VERY NEXT SEASON!! I think they should be rewarded favorably by the hockey gods for what they’ve done. They were so close to winning it all last year, that I do feel a bit sorry for them to have lost. This year is another chance for them to get back to the Finals, or CF. By the way, I don’t hate Boston. Cupless since ‘72, I can see folks rooting for them, as well. Boston, MA is a tremendous hockey market.

In the West, I definitely want SJS to win. Good club. Well-run. Only knock against ‘em is that Heatley plays on that team. Other than that, I support the San Jose Sharks. They made a coaching change, dumping the Marty Schottenheimer of hockey, Ron Wilson, in favor of McLellen (Sp?). Let’s see if that move was the difference? By the way, I don’t hate Detroit, either. They just win so much that I cannot find myself hoping that they experience some measure of success. Their fans have not suffered in futility, over the past 18 years.

For Vancouver vs. Nashville, this one is easy. The team I most want to see win the Cup is Nashville, of the remaining teams. Go Preds!! I took Vancouver, though. I hope I’m wrong. But, if I’m not, it’s good for the NHL to have Vancouver in the CF. For TV-ratings sake, Vancouver vs. Detroit is a lot better than San Jose vs. Nashville, two clubs whose following doesn’t transcend its city limits.

Okay, I’ll just say it, if I’m Commissioner Bettman, the SCF I most want to see come to fruition … is Boston vs. Detroit. That’ll work!! You want ratings? Two “original six” clubs, with national followings, will do very nicely. Washington, with Ovechkin’s presence, will do nicely. Philly might draw well, too. If the Tampa Bay Lightning win, it’s probably not going to draw as well. In the West, it’s always good if Detroit wins, for TV-ratings. Next best bet, Vancouver. Then San Jose. Then Nashville. If it’s Nashville vs. TBL for the Cup, I’ll certainly watch. But aside from the regulars on these boards, who ELSE in Georgia will? I doubt Massachusetts will watch, either, once the Bruins are eliminated.
