Things could not be going any worse for the Thrashers this weekend.
First there was Friday night as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Islander in overtime and the Rangers spanked Montreal. Each moved two points further ahead in their efforts to try and procure a playoff spot. Then Saturday night…in a game called next in a series of “biggest games of the season” for Atlanta… we witnessed the Buffalo Sabres building a snowman on the Thrashers, winning 8-2.
Something tells me it may very well just be the last billed as such.
While we were having a brutally bad time watching events unfold in western New York, the Toronto Maple Leafs were busy whacking the Boston Bruins 5-1. And just for good measure, the Florida Panthers were in the process of picking up an overtime loser point by at least dragging the Islanders to a shootout.
What that all means is that instead of possible pulling to within two points of the eighth-place Sabres, the Thrashers remain at 72 points and are six points behind Buffalo with only ten games left on the schedule. The Canes are four ahead of the Thrashers while the Leafs moved two ahead, leaving Atlanta in sole possession of eleventh place in the Eastern Conference.

Tim Connolly's goal late in the third period completed the snowman built by the Buffalo Sabres Saturday night. Under it may quite possibly have been buried the Thrashers playoff chances (AP Photo/David Duprey)
But in the words of the late, great Billy Mays…but wait, there’s more.
The New Jersey Devils will play in Columbus tomorrow and with a win will once again pull even with Atlanta. But given their advantage in the wins column it would actually drop us down to 12th place, just four ahead of the Panthers who are in the 13th position…and they’ll play two games before the Thrashers hit the ice again Thursday night on Long Island.
Go ahead and do the simple math there, folks.
As for the beat-down in Buffalo…well, it didn’t take the Sabres too terribly long getting to work on their snowman. Just 24 seconds after the puck dropped, Jason Pominville knocked it past Ondrej Pavelec for an early lead. Then, after Chris Thorburn’s sharp-angle shot got through Ryan Miller, the Sabres tacked on two more to take a 3-1 advantage into the first intermission.
To their credit, the Thrashers came out of the break playing very inspired hockey, leading to an Alex Burmistrov goal to get the score to within one. They continued to press the Buffalo defense for the first half of that middle frame…but that’s when the bottom fell out.
Nathan Gerbe’s jam-in from the right doorstep…the goal Thrashers TV analyst Darrin Eliot referred to as the “whack-a-mole” goal…lead very quickly to Tyler Ennis’ breakaway goal, despite Zach Bogosian’s stick being tossed at him.
It was Bogosian’s fumble at the offensive blueline that sprung Ennis to begin with.
In the third, Brad Boyes was added to the Thrashers woes. His power play goal made it 6-2 as Bogosian played the part of spectator.
After that, all that was left was simply to manufacture a couple of late-game tallies to complete the snowman. Rob Niedermayer second of the night at 16:52 and Tim Connolly’s on the power play 28 seconds later provided the corncob pipe and button nose.
If I’m not mistake, it was the seventh time this season an opponent has score twice in fewer than 39 seconds.
This loss looked a lot like so many we’ve seen since New Years…a close game halfway though the second turns into a blowout after an unfortunate goal or set of events. It happened during the 9-3 loss to Toronto on January 7, the 5-2 loss to Philly on January 14 and the 6-1 loss in Dallas two days after that.
Defensive zone breakdowns…one goal given up leads to another shortly thereafter…untimely giveaways…defensemen standing around…gift-wrapped turnovers at the blueline…
…sigh…
But unlike those collapses, this one could not have happened at a worse time with so much on the line. For under all that snow that Buffalo built a snowman with was quite possibly buried the last realistic chance the Thrashers might have had towards making a serious run at the playoffs this season.
Fortunately they’ll be plenty of warm weather in Thrasherville between now and the beginning of next season to melt all that snow away. Then we can begin anew our “playoff this season” hopes.
Again.

Just returned home from eating dinner with the wife at 57th Fighter Group, saw the score, and decided to skip the rerun.
Now don’t you guys blame Bogosian or Cornbread will come on and tell you that it was (insert name of forward)’s fault.

so as long as these cheap owners are involved the team will have goalie “consultant” vs. coach! Don’t look now but Kari is taking his new team to playoffs while this team has once again shown their true colors. The playoffs went down the drain in January against Philly once the team blew the 2 – 2 tie after 2 periods to lose at the end by 5 – 2…
Please give us new owners asap!!!!

If this game does NOT prove zachA$$ needs to GO AWAY, then what does ? -3 tonight, what’s new ? Why is Ramsey, who needs to be replaced as well, so committed to little zach ?
Bergfors was a much better talent and Ramsey threw him under the bus, and zach is a million times WORSE than Bergfors, what gives ? BTW how is that GREAT new player davorak doing ?
Try invisible that’s a good term. Mason is a complete BUST, Pav is not much better, This team is a complete diaster, forget anymore talk about the playoffs, yet again another worthless season from your Atlanta Thrashers, under President, Dumb don waddell and GM DUD ! dudley and Coach Quiet
ramsey, Will this team ever get better ?, NO, because from this vantage point, the future looks as bleak as the past !

sisu – I believe we may have been the only two, although there may have been a few others, that thought the Thrashers gave up on Kari one year too early. I remember the news that Kari had a congenital spine disorder surgically corrected. So with one year of RFA status left, why not see if his physical problems had finally been fixed. Oh well, as Brendan says, bygones.
Then again, if we still had Kari, would the Thrashers have had the assets to flip for Ladd?

Tom – Did you have a tax exemption playing in the tournament? If so, how did it turn out? As for my day, to repost from the previous blog…my son’s academic team won first place in the mmet. In the final round, they beat the other 3 squads 190-25-10-5. The two preliminary rounds were similar, only with their scores >200.
I’m hoping to hear from hockeymom92 about how her T.E. did…

Rawhide, congrats to your tax exemption! And I hope his date went well, too.
Hockeymom92, do you have an update from your son’s game?
R.Stroz, Dvorak will NOT be back next year, in my opinion. So, I wouldn’t fear Modin II, the Sequel, being back for 2011-12. By the way, I suppose we should update “Modin Watch – 2010-11.” Modin was dealt at the trade deadline for a 7th rounder, to Calgary. The terms and conditions of the Over/Under contest were such that Modin must play 56 games AS A THRASHER and score 14 goals, AS A THRASHER. So, everyone who picked “under” won that contest. These are those posters: Jeff97, Spud Webb, Hockey Biltong, Larry, Adam, R.Stroz, Brendan, Red Light, Curly, and Badger Bob. Congratulation to all of you.
In the AJC Point Totals contest, we have a few more eliminees, as the most points available, for Atlanta, are now 92. That means, anyone who had 93 or 94 points is now eliminated. Those posters include: Jack, Cornbread, J.B., the bigharybeast, ben, Smitty, BG33Brown and litz. I already listed those with 95-points, and higher, as eliminated in previous blog entries. At the bottom end of the guesses, there are no new updates, as LAC, at 71-points, still could win, if the Thrashers only get one more point between now and the end of the season. If the Thrashers get 74-points, then the winner of the contest would be Chippers Love Child, with a guess of 75-points.
At 77-points is Badger Bob. At 78-points are Nate and Jethro. At 79-points are Curly and Joe Friday.
Teetering on the verge of elimination are the folks with 91-92 points. One more regulation time loss would remove them from the contest. Those posters include: At 91-points, Mikey, Thrashy Thrashy, Paminski, Alan R., Kracker, lee, Tom Lysiak, Jameson, and goose. At 92-points, are HockeyMom92, Zombie Steve, Putting On The Foil, GaVaHokie, Hockey Biltong, Rhythmpenguin, Viking, Tony C., Simon, five_hole, and Glovesave29.
Good luck to those on the verge of elimination, and those with picks between 80-90 points, of which, there are many!! Thirty (30) posters, actually.

Ya know, when you’re part-Irish, St. Pattie’s Day is more like a whole extended weekend thing!! As someone who is part-Irish, I can get away with saying this. “Give an Irishman a month’s worth of lager, and he’s a dead man.”
R.Stroz, your post was very thought provoking. I got me to thinking … “Just What has been the Thrashers BEST salvage job?”
A) Kari Lehton for Andrew Ladd (via Vishnevskiy, defenseman prospect from Dallas). Did we also get a 5th rounder?? I can’t remember.
B) Hossa – 3 prospects, Angelo Esposito, Daultan Leiveille (#29 overall, 2008), and Eric O’Dell (via Erik Christensen, in a trade with Anaheim), and Colby Armstrong, who walked in free agency, for nothing, to Toronto.
C) Kovalchuk – Johnny Oduya, Radek Dvorak (via Nic Bergfors), Patrice Cormier, and a 1st round pick from NJ (flipped to Chicago for part of the Sopel, Eager, Byfuglien trade, along with Jeremy Morin and Marty Reasoner, as well as flipping 2nd round pick draft position with the Devils).
D) Coburn for Zhitnik (bought out in 2008, now retired). Coburn looked “lost” for most of his time with Atlanta. Of course, then Coach Bob Hartley hardly developed him, at six-minutes per game, for ice time.
E) Patrik Stefan for Niko Kapanen (retired in 2008) and 7th round pick, who turned into Will O’Neill, still in the farm system.
F) Boris Valabik for Mark Stuart, re-signed on a 3-year deal, from Boston Bruins. (This just might be the real winner, if you really think about it. Valabik has never scored an NHL goal and couldn’t crack the Thrashers lineup after six years from his Draft Year.)
G) Rich Peverley (waiver claime off Nashville) for Blake Wheeler, from the Boston Bruins. (This is also a good candidate for a decent salvage job.)
H) Alex Bourret (16th overall pick, 2005 draft,) for Pascal Dupuis and the NYR’s 3rd round pick. That 3rd rounder was later traded to Pittsburgh for Chris Thorburn, recently re-signed on a 3-year deal with Atlanta. Pascal Dupuis was packaged with Hossa, to the Penguins, in 2008. You might consider Colby Armstrong to be what Atlanta got in the exchange with the Penguins. Armstrong was not dealt at last year’s trade deadline, and walked in FREE AGENCY to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Note: Atlanta owned the 8th overall pick in the 2005 draft. They traded it to San Jose for # 41, who became Chad Denny. I don’t rightly know what became of Chad Denny. Atlanta moved back to pick # 12 (via San Jose). At # 12, Atlanta traded with the New York Rangers to fall back to # 16, to land Alex Bourret. In exchange, Atlanta picked up pick # 49, who became Ondrej Pavelec, the Thrashers # 1 goalie. This does not qualify as a “salvage job.” I define “salvage job” as “getting what you can for a pending UFA that won’t re-sign or … simply moving a non-productive, or “fallen out of favor” player, who has, in some way, disappointed the franchise. Those 2005 draft moves were straight up trades. Those picks, by definition, could have not have disappointed anyone by their non-play. Of course, at 8th overall, SJ took Setoguchi. Anze Kopitar and Mark Staal were also selected before the Thrashers would finally make a selection at # 16.
Go ahead, R.Stroz. Cast your vote. Anyone can, really. For me, I think I’m going with “Choice A, Kari for Ladd.” The reason? To me, and perhaps only to me, Andrew Ladd, our Captain, is the biggest impact player we’ve ever gotten back in a “salvage” situation. I reserve the right to change that pick to Blake Wheeler, via Peverley, later on. Peverley was NOT a pending UFA, but after next season, he would have been. And, I think it’s fair to say that Peverley ‘disappointed’ this season, compared to last year. Hopefully, he’ll pick things back up in Boston.

Wayne stuck in AL – If I may, I’d like to take the opportunity of your recent post to get a little something off my chest. Please don’t think I’m picking on you…you just happened to be the latest to opine on something that erks me somewhat.
Name me the AHL talent listed below:
Andrew Ladd…Nik Antropov…Bryan Little…Evander Kane…Radek Dvorak…Blake Wheeler…Chris Thorburn…Alex Burmistrov…Eric Boulton…Rob Schremp…Tim Stapleton…Anthony Stewart…Toby Enstrom…Dustin Byfuglien…Mark Stuart…Ron Hainsey…Johnny Oduya…Chris Mason…Ondrej Pavelec…Zach Bogosian
OK, I’ll agree that Stapleton has played too many games at the NHL level this season. But even he’s played well of late, even scoring some big goals.
Burmistrov? He couldn’t go to the AHL because of age. And what good would it do him back in the Juniors?
Schremp? Borderline…you can cite this one maybe if you wish.
Stewart? Let’s see…he’s scored more goals than Antropov and only 1 less than Little.
And I won’t forget most of the season we saw Modin here. But he’s not an AHLer…he’s a “should be former NHLer”.
Now again…I’m not picking on you, so please don’t take this as a personal shot. I understand your point 100% completely about the Spirit Clowns refusing to spend over the league minimum. The sooner they are out of our lives forever, the better. But I hear and read people say all the time how this is an AHL squad Ramsay has to coach. Sorry, I’m not buying it.
Medicocre to average NHL team…OK, that’ I’ll buy. Stanley Cup condender….no. A team that can only must 2 regulation since early January to mid-March….certainly not.
The problem with this squad isn’t as much “talent” as it is “heart” or “drive” or….if I may…”motivation”. This team tanks too often when something goes awry in a game.
These are all things a coach should be able to deal with, IMHO.
Tom – Thanks…and I am. But give your guy a nice pat on the back for competing an doing his best. I know you’re proud of him too.

Ahem…Stewart is a wussy. He is an absolute waste of a position. He never uses his size and he rarely crashes the net. He’s half-assed the entire season. He should be potting about 20 Gs a season. He should have been delt for a draft pick. I’d sign Dvorak over him any day.
Bogo is a third pairing D man and should stay a third pairing until he’s about 24. He sooo slow in processing information. He’s mentally about a half-stride behind and he has fuzzy focus. However, at least I know he does care (from his run in with the gate).
Why the F did Pavs start only to have Mason plugged in? I’m beginning to think Mason should start from here on out.

Rawhide, very true. I think it’s fair to say that, 34 seconds in, down 1-0, and trailing 3-1, after one period, that … ONCE AGAIN … the team was NOT PREPARED TO PLAY.
Stop. How many times did we say that, all year long? The schedule is 82 games long. But your Atlanta Thrashers were ‘unprepared to play’ at least 18-20 times times. That makes the games they WERE prepared to play, somewhere between 62-64. Well, how does one properly make the playoffs, when they take a fourth of the season off??
Bueller?
Bueller??
Bueller???
That’s right. They can’t. And there’s no excuse for it. One remedy … is to move the non-performing players. Peverley got moved. Bergfors got moved. Modin got moved. An easier and faster remedy … and far less costly, is to fire the coach. Now, I do want to say this much. The team budget was below the floor of the cap. Players like Modin, Stapleton, Kulda … was Nigel Dawes a part of the season this year?, are not really the kind you take to the postseason. And if you do, Heaven Help You!!
So, I’ll agree that the talent level wasn’t predominantly the AHL variety. But neither was it good enough, realistically, to make the playoffs this year. The reason we’ve been able to TALK about playoffs … resides in how weak the Eastern Conference has truly become. Last year, a couple of 88-point teams got in. It’s lookin’ like 88-89 points will be good enough, again, for the # 8 seed. When most years, it takes 93-94 points to be an 8th seed. And that’s 11-12 games over .500, “NHL Style.” Think about it. Eighty-eight (88) points is just six games over .500, for a 82 game schedule! That’s lame and pathetic, to be playoff bound, barring a barrage of injuries to key pieces and depth players.
In a normal year, the Thrashers would have been eliminated, for all intents and purposes, in the 1st week of March. Instead, their mathematical elimination will come in the 4th week of March. God bless Coach Ramsay. I can’t think of too many coaches who would jump into the Thrashers situation. Then again, I suppose, everything’s a bit EASIER … when you KNOW your bosses, and roomed with them, as NHL players. Dudley knows Ramsay from Buffalo Sabre days. Dudley knows Waddell from minor league days. It’s easier to accept a position, knowing that you’ll be given some preferential treatment. Is Don Waddell quick to fire Dudley? No. Is Dudley hot to trot to fire Craig Ramsay? No. Is the ownership, such as it is, ready to pay people NOT TO WORK for them??? No!!! Look how long they’ve kept Waddell here, blackmail accusations aside, given that … to fire him … they’d still have to PAY him. Now, did they have to renew Waddell for 3 years, back in 2008, after the team went on an 11-4-1 tear in relief of Hartley’s 0-6-0 start? No. But, the bottom line is, they did. And got stuck with him. If they’d been an ownership not primarily interested in basketball and litigation, they would have fired Waddell, long ago.
Nothing noteworthy will change, until new ownership is found. I don’t buy into relocation theory non-sense. It’s ridiculous to move a team out of Atlanta, when all that’s needed, all that’s EVER BEEN NEEDED, was ‘committed ownership’ to make this franchise work. Selling out 38 of 41 home games in 1999-2000 is all the proof anyone objectively needs to see where the level of hockey interest is, if there is a perception by FANS and players alike, that the ownership is trying to win, or build a winner.

UGH – what a night. T.E.’s game was almost as bad as Thrashers – we lost 6-2 and we are now a bit worried how we will compete at the Nationals in 2 weeks. Perhaps we could have a bit of sympathy as we played a college team on ice that was more like a lake. I know this is just an excuse – maybe we should get Ramsey to do our post game review…..

Russ: You made the strongest point of all! Some pay attention but nobody should have expected anything different.
In 2003-04, the Thrashers were up nine points on eventual SC champion Tampa Bay, Dec. 26, 2003. They were 19-14-5 and had 43 points. What came next? The Thrashers went 2-16-3. See ya!
In 2005-06, the Thrashers were 23-18-6 with 52 points as of Jan. 18, 2006 , and even though they were already 16 points behind the Canes, they were still in the playoff hunt. Then, they lost 7 straight. See ya!
On Feb. 15, 2008, the Thrashers were up 2 points on Washington and had just beaten them two days earlier and now had a two-point division lead. After hanging in there with a 29-27-4 record and 62 points, the Thrashers went 2-11-4. See ya!
On March 4, 2010, despite dealing Kovy and Salmela, the Thrashers were 29-27-4, with 62 points, and although they trailed Washington by 28 points for the Division lead, they were down only three points to Philadelphia and were tied withe the Rangers and Canadiens. The Thrashers then lost six straight! See ya.
January 5, 2011. Thrashers were 22-15-6, had 50 points and led the Canes by 8 points, the Sabres by 11, the Rangers by one point and the Maple Leafs by 16! Since then they have gone 8-15-6.
And, if you really weren’t paying attention, there were four different coaches (Hartley, Waddell, Anderson and Ramsay) and I’m sure there are others who will fill you in on the rest of missing pieces.

hockeymom92 – Tough break…but maybe their coach can get ‘em properly motivated for the Nationals. Good luck to them.
Joe McGrath – Stewart runs hot and cold to me. There are times when he’s hot and plays well. There are just as many times as he plays…well…much the way you described.
Red Light - As per usual, excellent work digging up those numbers. Perplexing to say the least.
The only things I would add to it would be that in the latter stages of 2005-06, Bob Hartley coached that team back to within a Mike Dunham ‘phone-in” job of possibly making the playoffs….90 points is what they finished with that year, was it?
And the next year the Thrashers did again make the playoffs…again under Hartley’s leadership.

Seriously look at your team….it’s pathetic…our AHL Portland team has more talent. You people actually think the Thrashers are a playoff team??? Guess not, right?
oh btw…the reference to the snowman is a pathetic jab @ Buffalo. We love our City and weather up, and so you know, NYC, Philly, Boston, Jersey, and other upstate Citites like Syracuse, Albany, and Rochester all got more snow – about double than Buffalo this year. So we just smirk when uninformed Southerners make ignorant assumptions. Although I will take snow anyday over 95 degree heat with 100% humidity…talk about discomfort

Chris Buffalo – Actually, the snowman reference had nothing to do with the weather in Buffalo. It’s a golf term used when someone scores an “8″ on a hole. And if you took any other reference to “snow” as a dig towards Buffalo…well, I think you are seriously reading into the post something that’s just not there.
The Thrashers played awful in a “big game” and the Sabres totally took advantage of it, the way a playoff team should, and dropped an “8″ spot on us.
But thanks for playing anyway….

“Wait til next year”……the sad truth, again, for us as Thrasher fans. The team’s current roster is incredibly fragile at crunch time(s). The ownership is big piece, but players on the ice are the ones making it happen with motivation from the coaches. They need to learn from what Devils are doing with coaching AND playing with intensity. We don’t belong in cup play this year.

An earlier poster called it an “EPIC FAILURE”. Wrong, it’s an EXPECTED FAILURE. Clueless Craig has absolutely no motivational skills. Bye, Bye Hockey Whisperer. Heard Boucher, Tampa Bay coach talk about creating excitement for team rather than running through drills. That is exactly what we need- SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS MOTIVATION AND GETS RESULTS. We do not need a COMATOSE COACH.

“…And, if you really weren’t paying attention, there were four different coaches (Hartley, Waddell, Anderson and Ramsay) and I’m sure there are others who will fill you in on the rest of missing pieces.”
For those placing all of the blame on the coach, please read Red Light’s excellent submission above. Those who think this roster has legitimate NHL-talent (across the board) and that “all we have to do” is fire the coach is living in Joe-Bob-Friday-Revisionist-Historian delusion. See, he will have known “all along” about three years from now…
The chef isn’t the weakest link, folks…Look at the kitchen and the ingredients first. It’s just that simple.
Whoever subsidizes this embarrassing incompetence is part of the problem. But, Don Waddell truly thanks you for his support…

The Phoenix Coyotes aren’t exactly on firm financial footing either, but there they are again making their way into the Western Conference playoffs with a record of 39-23-11 (currently 4th) and somehow manage to spend $8 million more than the Thrashers, and their average ticket distribution is 1,500 less per night than Atlanta’s. That’s probably the biggest reason for condemnation.
Since finishing 30 points ahead of Phoenix in the standings during the 2006-07 season, the Thrashers are -51 to the Coyotes point total during the past four seasons.
So, while the money is a problem, it’s not the lone problem.
Thanks for playing along Sage!

Rawhide. I’ll take that challenge. A. Stewart. Absolutely friggin’ invisible the second half of the season. Never gets anything in terms of “bad” attention from the Rammer despite some pretty horrible play. Nik? Still recovering from surgery and should’ve seen the press box buffet line several times this season for doggin’ it worse than Hossa his last year.
I like Burmy but he’s got some very rough edges due to his youth. We’ve brought him along very quickly in our desperation. He’s played with a constantly revolving group of linemates, which hasn’t helped.
Oh, and AHL talent? THE COACH. I think it was Wheeler who said it best….Rammer was the ASSISTANT Coach everyone in Boston liked. That’s what he should be again. Fails to adapt, fails to work with individual players on their repeated gaffes. A NHL calibre coach would hold ALL players accountable and adapt as circumstances require. Even Rammer admitted that for the first half of the season he was playing Bogo wrong and not letting him skate. 41 friggin’ games to figure that out? Not my type of coach, not by a longshot.

And thanks Thrashers for all the abuse I am taking today (and last night) from my family and friends in Buffalo. No three starts last night in white. Happy to see more people acknowledge Stewart as a stiff, he will be bye-bye in the off-season.
Dennis Green said it – “The Thrashers are who we thought they were” -a non-playoff team that hopefully will be better next year. The next accomplishment is where will we stand in the draft, hopefully we will fall back further and get a higher draft pick. Don’t let it ruin your Sunday.

Red Light, Have to agree, Phoenix has not superstar players, bet I could name only 8-10 plqayers. But the do something Atlanta has NEVER done, they play DEFENSE. We have never done that.
They play a tight system and do the little things to WIN. We DO NOT !
Look at Atlanta, at THE BOTTOM in GA again this season, most likely. Scoring is sporatic and the team cannot play a solid defensive game. Despite all the distractions, Phoenix WINS. Something we cannot do.
Say what you want, this team is exactly like john anderson’s team, not one bit difference.
Ok, we have played this defensemen join the play thing the past THREE years, where has it led us ? Nowhere. So, We need a coach who PREACHES Defense FIRST ! I don’t care if we win boring 2-1 or 3-2 games everynight, the object of the game is WIN. These past three years have proven the join the offense rush does not work. Sure some nights it does, but it costs us more than helps win.
Players, zach B, Has Got to GO, he is simply Terrible and has shown in the past two seasons he is a complete BUST. Bryan Little, nice kid, but NOT NHL worthy,Stewart, like someone said, invisable, and our most recent #1 pick has 4, yes 4 goals this season, First-round picks need to produce a few more goals, don’t you think ? Then the defense, needs to have a TOTAL revamp
and I mean TOTAL. Goaltending, buy out or trade Mason, simply not too good. Pavs, a backup at best. Get a solid number 1 goalie. Get some defensive defensemen, get some people who can SCORE. Get a new owner, a new President and most of all a REAL GM who knows how to build a winner and a coach who will set the players pants on FIRE. It is time to do it all, because what we have is a collection of players that do not work, plain and simple and last night was an example of a filure by both the players and coach to get the job done and secure another lost season in Atlanta.

I don’t want to make the playoffs. You know we’d just get swept again and who wants to see that. Losing with dignity would be nice but what you gonna do. I used to enjoy watching the hawks a few years ago when we had childress. We lost a lot of games but we were trying hard. Now hawks have talent to get into playoffs but then lose without dignity. Who wants that? Saw interview with Torchetti the other night and he looks like a proper coach. I’d be scared if he was yelling in my face, spit flying into my eyes. That’s what i want from a head coach. Let Rammer be the assistant that will whisper reassurances to Zach when Torch makes him cry a little after a screw up.

This team has inept ownership, a god awful general manager, a no account president, a doable coach, absolutely no leadership (who the hell thought Ladd should be C), just a couple players that care, talent that for the most part would be 3rd or 4th line on most teams. Year after year when a game counts the team goes south. This STH is voting with his money, no renewal this year. I’d rather travel up to Nashville to a game where a professional organization, great coach, and hard working players make it worth the $$$.

LAC, I have no problem with D joining the play, but the forward who is behind the play needs to recognize that he needs to stay back and cover the missing slot. On average (discounting the few huge butt whoopings) I see games and think “oh, they aren’t playing that bad and are keeping it close”. I have this same view of CO – a bit less so though. And then I watch some of these national games and, clearly, there are some teams that are really just way better and when they get up for a big game it is so fun to see the determination. I’m not saying Thrashy isn’t trying but there is an obvious difference in team passion.

Cliff – Yep. From what people say, that may take well into next season at the earliest or maybe until a year from now.
An internet journo (sorry, I don’t remember who or have a link) said that for a sale to happen there has to be some sort of important statement of intent filed with the league by the end of a calendar year for a sale to happen in the following year. If this is true – the journo said no such filing happened last year – we would be looking at an ownership change no sooner 2012. However, we could get news this summer of great progress, the name of the serious person intending to be the new owner, etc.

Turning point in the game to me is letting a 5′5″ midget whale away at a puck that your goalie has smothered. On the same play you let Mancari come into the crease and push your goalies pad out of the way??? Hainsey laid down on top of Gerbe and smothered him instead of depositing him in the 3rd row. Teams with character don’t let the other team take those liberties on their goalie. This team is soft and passive, a reflection of the coach. The confusing thing is this is not the type of team Dudley said he wanted to build. It’s no wonder that both players and fans seem confused.

Russ certainly has a point. Back in 2006, Dunham lays an egg versus the Caps and the Thrashers get eliminated, while Marc Savard walks for nothing, in free agency, to the Bruins. In 2007, when the Thrashers lost a pair of close playoff games at Philips Arena, Game Three turned into “the most important moment” in franchise history. The result? A 7-0 pasting of the Thrashers, by the Rangers, giving Kari Lehtonen a sun tan on the back of his neck. In 2010, with the season on the line, the Thrashers suffer an embarrassing shutout loss, at the Bulb, versus the Devils, with Kovalchuk putting a bow on the package the Devils wrapped up, in terms of the Thrashers season.
Okay, that’s all history. So, what should have been done differently, to prevent a repeat performance? Isn’t THAAAAAT the question we should be asking right now? Rather than pointing out the obvious, that the Thrashers underachieve and have poor ownership.
At least Rawhide pointed out one possible move not taken: Firing Coach Ramsay. I’ll accept, for the moment, that a budget set BELOW THE FLOOR of the cap should translate into a lottery draft finish. But as Red Light points out, above, this team … generally speaking, competes and keeps itself in the hunt in the first half of the season, then they fold like Superman on laundry day, when the critical portion of the season kicks in.
I think we all know, by now, that games are easier to win in October and November than they are in March and April. Or February, for that matter. When the games that TRULY count happen, this team isn’t ready to compete. Or can’t compete. So, what should be done about it? That’s the question. Would firing the coach solve that latter season problems that plague this team, historically? I think, at a minimum, we should discuss that. We might ultimately conclude … that firing Coaches every February doesn’t fix ownership.
So, what’s different in Phoenix? I suppose, there’s accountability there. There’s belief that, eventually, good ownership will take over that franchise, and let the Coyotes continue what they’ve been building. However, if Ilya Bryzgalov walks in Free Agency, that’s the domino that sends that franchise tumbling down again. It does come down to ownership, EVERYWHERE.
Would shuffling lines have the “fixed the problem” in Atlanta this year? Some people might think so. But really, would it?? A healthy Nik Antropov contributing regularly, and being physical, would have helped. Rich being “Peverywhere” would have helped. Maybe, Pavelec not fainting on Opening Night and playing more would have helped???
Or, do we need to look even further back, at Pavel Kubina, and ask ourselves how and why we couldn’t convince him to sign for 3-years in Atlanta for the same, or more money, than Tampa Bay offered. There’s an argument to be made that Kubina is the best Thrasher defensemen to ever play for the franchise. Can are argument be made for retaining Max Afinogenov?? We had cap room. And the ability to buy out a 5-year contract, if necessary. Jus’ sayin’. Though, that’s a terrible waste of money, for the future. What about losing Colby Armstrong? Was that a blow or a blessing? What about losing Moose Hedberg? I certainly thought we’d gone to the well once too often, on that count. Johan Hedberg was 37, when he walked to the Devils, for nothing.
What about the FRENZY, last July? Should we have been more aggressive, than Chris Mason? And Anthony Stewart, signed July 13th. And Frederik Modin? And Nigel Dawes? Let’s be honest, aren’t those the moves made by a cash strapped organization? And that falls on ownership.
Okay, let’s go back to December, (Okay, I just paid Taylor Swift a royalty on that one,) what should this organization have done differently? Let’s list the players that we KNOW got moved this season by other teams, and what the cost was to obtain them. Then, we ask ourselves, “Could Atlanta have made the same move(s)?” If the answer is yes, then we have BAD MANAGEMENT. That is to say, we had the ASSETS that it would have taken to obtain “Player X,” we simply dropped the ball. Would you have wanted Langenbrunner, for example? What about Craig Anderson? Avs dealt him! Lots of players got moved. Pick anyone you want. Let’s get the discussion going … about what steps this franchise DIDN’T TAKE. And why.
On your mark … get set … GO!!

WBF, my Aunt lives on Grand Island, NY. And every time I’ve ever been to Buffalo/WNY/Letchworth/Niagara Falls, I’ve thought the area was very, very pretty. First time I saw Niagara Falls, they were draped by snow. It was, maybe, the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. With people leaving Buffalo in droves, I can’t imagine there’s much of a traffic problem, anymore. The roads are probably in rough shape, due to salt and wear. But, I’d wager, without knowing a darned thing, that you could drive from one end of Buffalo’s suburbs to the other … in any direction … in 20-25 minutes, even in bad traffic. Try to imagine driving from Douglasville to Conyers along I-20, in rush hour. Gotta be well over an hour, on a good day. Now, try to imagine driving from Newnan to Duluth, along I-85 North. Gotta be an hour and a half! Try to imagine driving from McDonough to Marietta, on I-75, through the connector? Or Fayetteville to Alpharetta. C’mon. You couldn’t get halfway there in 20-25 minutes, in non-rush hour.
The result? And, again, this is mere speculation on my part, Buffalonians are probably much closer to each other. It’s just a short trip to someone else’s house, irrespective of the mileage. Who’s on the road? I don’t know if Buffalo has any toll roads, but if they do, it’s gotta be even faster! I know there’s a roll road on some Interstate to get to Niagara Falls, unless you take Niagara Falls Boulevard to avoid it. Grand Island is actually very close to the Falls. Anywho, I don’t see why Buffalonians should be so defensive about their weather. They get the changing of the leaves, a wonderful Indian Summer, and a spring that’s pretty decent, once it finally, finally arrives. Actually, the worst weather I ever experienced visiting my Aunt was in July! It was a sweltering humidity, that made outside just awful. But, that’s pretty much it.

EA, I agree. BlogMaster is far too kind to some of these miserable turd balls like Chris Buffalblow. People like that are just mindless morons who lack the maturity to simply enjoy their team’s win amongst themselves. It shows a certain amount of immaturity and insecurity to make your way to another team’s blog simply to toss around insults and rub noses in the results. Sad and pathetic really.
But it does seems as though Buffalo has more than their fair share of moronic cretins like that. He’s probably chuckling in his mommy’s basement right and feeling quite impressed with himself.
And to say that their AHL affiliate has in Portland has more NHL talent than the Thrashers, or any NHL team for that matter? Well, I guess we can all see who the “uninformed”, “ignorant” person is here.

EA-yeah I never though I would be on the giving end of a Buffalo dude giving us a hard time. Well they got it back today, blowing a 2 goal lead with just over 2 minutes to go then losing in OT. So for as muchg grief as we have given the Thrashers, the Sabres are goats less than 24 hours later! Just shows you how mediocre all the teams in the 8-11 spots are.
Tom Lysiak-Mario is the biggest hypocrite in the game, his team is filled with cheap shots. He whined alot as a player so I am not surprised by his actions. You have to remember the Pens tanked the 1983 season to get Mario’s rights, so PIT has a nice history of this stuff.
Also, Gerbe should have been knocked on his ass last night when he was whacking away. 5′5″ or 6′5″, the player needs to be put down hard!
Brendan, all Buffalonians have ever heard is how bad their weather is, which explains their short fuses on the subject. I have been in enough cities in know others are comparible on the bad weather. My father-in-law is visiting from Rochester, they have had an awful winter constant snow since October, 140 inches total-plenty of pot holes too. You can have it.
sisu-gotta agree on Bogo, though I am starting to lose my patience with him. No matter how old he is, this is season 3, he should be avoiding the meltdowns he had last night. I think Bogo or Oduya will be traded during the draft, one or the other. All depends on if Dudley believes both Postma and Kulda are ready for the big club.

Z you are absolutely correct. Most times we have too many rushing and are very exposed on the back end. Best the goalie make a save to stop play, because a rim out and it’s 3on 1 or2 or 2 on 1.
That kills us, if the play is there for the Dman to rush, fine, but to have that as a play that is available to all dmen etc… Simply has not worked out all that well for Atlanta.

WBF, the 2nd Nashville goal was just like Buffalo’s “whack-a-mole” goal versus Atlanta. I watch that Sabres-Preds game, and I was stunned to see that kind of collapse, at home, by Buffalo, in a game where, clearly, NJ was going to win their game. That was a complete joke job. I think Scott Norwood should hold a press conference to announce, “Did ya see today’s Sabres game. My kick was 47-yards, off grass, and missed by six feet. The Sabres couldn’t close a 1:37 of regulation time. Pathetic.
Glovesave29, we have to establish some rules here. Guys, c’mon. Russ is a very smart poster, but this isn’t the Discovery of the Lost City of Atlantis. Or the Dead Sea scrolls. Or the cure for cancer that space aliens, who visited our world before Dinosaurs ruled the planet, left behind scribbled on underworld caverns … until the medical community hushed-it-up. For obvious reasons. (That’s joke. Move it along.)
We know our own team’s history, very well. This is our tenth year, out of eleven, outside of the playoffs. The year began with a budget below the floor, and will end that way, amazingly, without punishment by the NHL of a loss of a draft pick.
Honestly, now. Just WHAT we you expecting?? A 12-0-0 finish? I could’ve run a contest last month, “Guess the date the Thrashers get mathematically eliminated.” And there would have been 80 guesses to log, all throughout the month of March. With, perhaps, a smattering in April. Obviously, we’re going to lose games down the stretch. Obviously, we’re going to be eliminated.
As fans, we just try to enjoy each and every game. Sometimes we win. Other times, not. But to expect “must win” games to end in victory, for your Atlanta Thrashers, down the stretch … means someone needs to lovingly put their arm around your shoulder … and explain things, with clarity. We all love the idea of Santa Claus. But how can he get from Pittsburgh to Milwaukeee, in a hour, and keep all the gift tags right, without missing a house or two? Riiiiight.
The Buffalo game won’t be the last one, this year, that the Thrashers lose badly. I repeat, as fans, we just try to enjoy, as best we can, each and every game on the schedule. That’s all we can do.

Bogo and Tyler Myers were drafted the same year.Last night you can see how far apart they are.Bogo was rushed into the lineup right away; Myers went back to juniors, played for Team Canada, Which guy would you rather have right now?? This team can’t develop players.

Looks like the Coyotes are staying put in Phoenix as Matt Hulsizer is guaranteeing the bonds as part of the purchase agreement for the team.
Please Atlanta hockey fans, don’t give up on the Thrashers…they still have a shot at the playoffs and need good crowds at home to spur them on.As Brendan said in his comments above, take it game by game and enjoy the experience. With a new owner hopefully the team can build on its foundation and whatever happens this year the Thrashers can be stronger in 2011-2012.

Brenden, I remember the trade down in 2005, we PASSED on Sectagoochie, I know I BOTCHED that one, and Marc Staal, and I will Always remember waddell saying “We got THE player we wanted” Where is Bourret now ??? I never understood “trading” down ? Makes NO sense and to pass on guys who would/could have helped us, we choose a NOTHING player and get nothing.
We need a whole NEW scouting staff, because what we employ now… Isn’t too good.
Just look at Burmistrov, 4 goals for a first rounder, that is really pitiful to say the least, nothing against the kid, he hustles, but needs to have spent another year in juniors I feel, maybe he will be better next season… Let’s hope so !
Any chance we could land Brad Richards and The Phoenix goalie ? Plus another NHL quality Dman ??? In the UFA market. Gee I hope so !

LAC, yeah Auburn, NY is pretty nice. Like I said before, Buffalo is a great place to be from. I do miss real Italian and Polish food. Totally agree on the new scouting staff, too many blanks fired by this group. Dudley needs time to develop his support staff. The problem is time, is not on our side.
An influx of new players and scouts requires cash, that’s the key to any improvement. This team has been in the hunt for a playoff spot despite the 2nd LOWEST payroll in the league. Commitment requires dollars to get the right people, both on an off the ice.
Doug Martin-there is a recurring them in your post, the need to allow players to develop. Sabres were hesitant to bring up Tyler Myers last year, the year he won rookie of the year. They still believed he needed another year in the minors. They left Zach Kassian in the minors this season allowing him to develop and mature 1 more season. If you are going to rush the kids to the big leagues you might as well trade the pick for value now. Burmie-the kid works hard and hustles, but I remember seeing him in the preseason games, believing there was no way he should be here this year. His season has been wasted, though his hustle has made Burmie my favorite Thrasher. Anthony Stewart should be made to sit in a room and watch nothing but Burmie tapes.

HEY SAGE OF BLUELAND- “It’s the ingredients and not the chef”. Great line but definitely doesn’t fit for hockey. Somebody has to put the ingredients together correctly and make adjustments when it’s not right. Anybody who really knows hockey (I played 3 greats in college many moons ago) knows how important a coach is in making adjustments even within games. Hartley did it but Ramsey plays the same style game in and game out and teams know exactly how to attack and defend us.

Know what the problem is – need to go back on vacation. Was on tour for two weeks and the team goes 3-1-1. Come back and it’s more of the same.
The league needs to have different options for players of Bogie’s and Burmi’s talents. Although not ready for prime time neither needed to go abck to juniors – they wouldn’t have gained anything by being the big fish in the little pond. They should be eligible for the ECHL or AHL.

DWTOO – The CHL wants to keep it’s talent as long as possible so they have an agreement w/ the AHL. I think it is that CHL players have to either be 20 yrs old to begin a season or have played in jrs for 4 years before they can play in the AHL. Or they can make the big club, of course. I don’t know if there is a similar arrangement between the CHL and the ECHL.
But for sure, Bogey, Burni, even Kane would have benefitted greatly from a year in the AHL.

We just need more talent via spending some money which is not going to happen with the ASG. Our young talent is doing what young talent does which is they are inconsistent. Bogosian has made big strides in the last dozen games or so but has those lapses, Burmi and Cormier are trying to feel their way around the NHL and trying to stay healthy but they are getting much needed experience. Kane and Pavs as well have been inconsistent, all to be expected. But, what we are missing is the experienced players like Buff, Ladd, Enstrom, Antro, Oduya, Mason, Hansey, etc to step up and lead, outside of Ladd and Entrom that has not happened. It seems to me that Buff has disappeared the second half of the season or since signing his new contract. Our six defensemen are definitely NHL caliber defensemen which is a drastic change for this organIzation. We are just missing quality veteran forwards to pull this team over the top. If we can bring a couple of these guys in and with the young guys starting to mature we will be good for years to come. It is just hell watching the process right now with the lack of money to supplement the youth movement with veteran leadership and scoring.

This season is just another wasted opportunity. I expected a .500 team at best, but like everyone else here, began to see hope during the 12-2-2 run, which seems like light years ago from today.
There are no excuses, as this team is a reflection of the poor development of its younger players in the minor leagues. Look at the contributions of the players they have called up this season, and that is all you need to know.
The 11 players that the Thrashers called up or acquired off waivers have played in a collective total of 107 games and have a combined seven goals, four assists and a plus/minus rating of -30.
Contrast that to the nine players called up or acquired off waivers by the Predators. That collection has played 110 games and has 13 goals and 16 assists with a plus/minus rating of +4.
In Milwaukee, the Preds assistant GM Paul Fenton also is the GM of the Admirals, and head coach Lane Lambert is now in his fourth season with the team. It is called >>>Direction!

And another thing while I am getting it off my chest, this team cannot deal with prosperity! Have you ever noticed when we do something good like score a goal, we immediately do something stupid to relinquish the momentum like take a stupid penalty or lay down on defense and let the other team score. Same deal with when something negative happens they double down on it by giving up one goal after another! The mental toughness of this team is non-existent! This has to come from the coaches and or veteran leadership on the team…it is not there! It is too much to ask from a young player to take the role of willing your team to victory down the stretch..ok I am out.

But this team won’t get better until it’s sold. What’s the draft look like? Maybe a Kovy-type player can be drafted and entertain us while they wait to move on to greener pastures.
Change of subject. Could the league sue ASG for improperly operating one of it’s franchises? I’m sure that happens elsewhere in business. Just thought I’d throw that out there.

The Spirit Squad isn’t going to own this club past this year. The key now is who exactly will be owning the club going forward. We need it to be a hockey guy. We get a hockey guy in charge by July 1st so we can sign a couple needed top end. Get a quality coach, and there’s a good core here to take the steps forward. Buf is signed long term, Kane is showing he’s ready for top line duty next year and Ladd can step back into a more comfortable role.

Red Light, I guess it comes down to this, in terms of Atlanta’s chances of making the playoffs, year-in and year-out: We must win at .650 clip in October, November, and December. That way, our .350 clip down the stretch … will even out to a .500, while we hope that .500 will be ‘good enough’ to get in, at # 8.
Gee, that sounds inspiring, eh? No, the correct answer is … we need good ‘hockey people’ to step in and run the Thrashers. Ownership, actually, is VERY EASY. Don’t look at me like that. It’s true. If you’ve got money … and you have the ‘good sense’ that God gave a jacka$$ … you come to the conclusion that you need to install COMPETENT oversight of the team you own.
As a GOOD OWNER, you have two (2) missions. (1) Fork over the money, all that is required, and (2) Finding someone COMPETENT to run your team for you. That’s it. It’s not complicated. Do that, and you’ll probably win games, make the playoffs, and maybe go DEEP into the playoffs. You never know … you might be presented with the Stanley Cup in the lockerroom, in June.

LAC, it’s definitely true that Don Waddell left Devin Setoguchi, Anze Kopitar, and Mark Staal on the table back in 2005, to move back to # 16 to go get Alex Bourret. But, here’s why DW did it. His reasons were clear, at least to me. He had troubles in net. And this was PRIOR to “Kari Down ‘05.” Kari’s 1st major groin injury as a Thrasher wouldn’t occur until October of 2005.
At that point in the franchise, Damian Rhodes was a bust, Cassivi and Fankhouser were no solution. Adam Berkhoel and Michael Garnett were mere prospects. Norm Maracle was long gone. Byron Dafoe was no answer. Milan Hnilicka had one good year, then laid an egg, so much so … that DW agreed to pay HALF his salary to go play for the Los Angeles Kings. His biggest success, at that point, was Pasi Nurminen. Kari was future of the franchise, but just in case Nurminen turned into a dud, like Hnilicka did, like Rhodes did, like Dafoe did, etc., he needed some depth in goal. He targeted several goalies in the 2nd round, that he thought would be available.
Also, I would think, Waddell was hot to land a blueline prospect, in the 2nd round. His thinking? Let’s move back, and there’s bound to still be something there, in the late 30’s, early 40’s of the 2nd round. So, at # 41, DW selected Chad Denny, that he got from the # 8 overall pick trade to San Jose, to fall back to # 12. That pick is, maybe, one of the worst in franchise history. I think Denny is in the ECHL? I don’t rightly know. He’s fallen completely off my radar.
By moving from # 12 (via San Jose/Setoguchi trade) to # 16, to land Bourret, the NYR gave us their pick # 16, and # 49 (high-end 2nd rounder). At # 49, Waddell got his goalie, Ondrej Pavelec. Later on, Waddell would trade Bourret to the Rangers for a 3rd rounder, who the organization moved to Pittsburgh for Chris Thorburn, now re-signed on a 3-year deal, and Pascal Dupuis. Dupuis later got packaged with Hossa, in 2008, and the return was … Colby Armstrong, who walked for nothing in free agency, to Toronto.
So, if we’re our draft history, Pavelec and Thorburn were the return for pick # 8 overall. Of course, in my mind, if I’m DW and looking for a goalie, why not pick him at # 16, going with Tuukka Rask?? Rask went 20th overall, selected by, I think, Toronto.
LAC, you know I don’t like taking goalies in the 1st round. My “exception to the rule” is if you find yourself in the “crapshoot” area of the draft. The “crapshoot area” is pick # 15 to # 30. At # 16, yeah … I could take a goalie there, if I had a strong leaning towards someone, and my scouts AGREED with me about it.
Had that happened, there’d be no Bourret trade and no Chris Thorburn or Pascal Dupuis, and obviously no Pavelec, either. The net results would be a busted pick of Chad Denny and Tuukka Rask. I’ll let you decide what would have been better. That, or Pavelec and Thorburn, with a 2-year “rental” of Colby Armstrong, that didn’t result in any playoffs.

That game Saturday night was totally inexcusable. Dudley should have greeted them all at the airport with pink slips in hand, both for certain players and the coach. What an embarrassment.

LAC, there actually is a ‘legitmate reason’ to move back in a draft. And this is it. If you’re sitting at pick # 19 or so … and a team at # 24 approaches your draft table to talk about a trade, you should listen to them provided that they have a pick in the 30’s, or early 40’s, to offer you.
Why? Again, we’re in the “crapshoot” area of the draft, where the likelihood of finding a player is less than 20-percent, who will play more than 3 years in the NHL, and contribute ANYTHING OF VALUE while doing it. By moving back to # 24, the talent level is still essentially the same, plus you’ve just picked up, let’s just say, pick # 38 in the draft. At # 38, with a scouting department worth its salt, you could still land a decent player, for the future. And your difference between # 19 and # 24 is quite negligible. Bottom line, you picked up two picks still in ‘fertile ground’ for landing a player.
Here’s why shouldn’t accept the # 19 for # 24 deal … you see someone you like up on that board, annnnnnd … you don’t think he’ll still be there … at # 24. Better get him now!!
There’s actually another reason why a GM might move back in a draft. Several times, a 2nd round pick is used to trade for an RFA player off another team’s roster. So, let’s review. Your GM moves from # 19 to # 24, to pick up pick # 38. Pick # 38 might get traded to Columbus, let’s just say, for an R.J. Umberger type of player. The GM might also use # 24 to go land some other team’s prospect from 1-3 years ago’s draft. That player should be close to being NHL-ready now.
There’s nothing wrong with doing that, LAC. In fact, GM’s who move low-end 1st rounders and high-end 2nd rounders for NHL-ready players, able to contribute in the very next season, might actually be a fairly good use of the draft. Especially, if their franchise has a PROVEN TRACK RECORD of failure to develop talent, on their own.
Now, I hear ya, LAC. “But we’re talking about # 8, a Top 10 overall pick. Why trade it?” Shrugs. I wouldn’t trade it. I’d pick someone, at # 8. Your odds of actually landing an NHL player … whose rights you’d control for 8 more years (!!!) are pretty ‘decent.’ Around forty-percent (40%). Believe me, those are ‘good odds.’ The odds only improve a little bit more, housed inside the lottery draft. If I were to trade an 8th overall pick, it’s got to be for a well-established Top Six forward, with 5 or more years left on his deal, just so I have some kind of protection against the player being lost to unrestricted free agency. And even there, such trades can be somewhat ’short-sighted,’ as the player you develop (by drafting him) could be locked up on an 8-10 year deal, on his RFA contract. That’s the best situation. You can build your marketing campaign around him, knowing that he’s not going anywhere for a long time, etc., etc., etc.

It’s so true … that the draft is an inexact science. There isn’t a Crosby, Ovechkin, Lecavalier, or Stamkos in every year. Sometimes, there’s an Alexandre Daigle, a Patrik Stefan, etc. You just never know. Some lottery picks never play an NHL game. That’s just the way it goes, unfortunately.
But, what do I always say?? Class! Class!! Classssss!! That’s right. You hold those scouts and that GM accountable for misdirecting the franchise, if that’s what ACTUALLY happens to the franchise. Now, I’ll freely admit … that the Draft isn’t everything. But, it’s still pretty big. Teams that suck at drafting … don’t usually enjoy long periods of success, simply by trading, making UFA signings, and making waiver claims.
A GM’s best bet … for landing a franchise player … is definitely the 1st round selection. Do I, or would I, fire a GM … because none of his 5th, or 6th, or 7th round picks ever cracked the starting lineups? Pfft, no!! That’s outrageous. But if he misses on enough 1st and 2nd rounders, over 3-4 years. Well, that’s another story. Gotta find players. Gotta develop players. Gotta have good assistant coaches to work on special teams and a goalie coach for the netminders, etc. A GM’s job is a tough one. There are always tough decisions to be made. Who to cut. Who to re-sign. Who to target in free agency. What’s a good return on a trade? Did you make a ‘good’ contract, or did you just pay Chris Drury 7+ million dollars to play on the 3rd line. Or Brian Campbell $7 million, to be a 3,4,5 defender role.

Tough call…he’s a decent player when not being a total head case. I am sure someone would take a chance on him, but the contract would be loaded with disciplinary clauses. He’s already been suspended 5 times, so my personal feeling is he doesn’t learn from this one. It’ll happen again. Plus you have a player every team in the league wants to destroy. He’ll retaliate to a clean hit and put your team in trouble. Personally – i’d pass.
Let’s see what this does to the Pens. They are in 4th…the last team to get a home series guarantee in the first round. With what they are already missing, adding this to it could cause the team falling to 6th…it’s not out of the question…and a first round match with the Bruins. Certainly not as attractive as getting the Lightning.

Tom Lysiak, I would take Matt Cooke.
What???
Look, it’s not a league for people running for Pope. No big, white hats required. Cooke is excellent protection for Kane, Burmistrov, etc. He’s earning a point just about every other game. He’s only had three (3) seasons as a minus (-) player, all with Vancouver, and is a +50 in his career, for the regular season. He has 12 goals this year, something he’s already done six (6) times in his career. That’s an upgrade over Boulton, as an enforcer.
Cooke is good for 13-14 minutes a game, compared to Boulton at 6-9 minutes a game. Cooke is a shark, in chummed up waters. We need a guy like that, minus the ‘repeat offender’ reputation. He has eight (8) years of playoff experience, where his numbers curtail off, to a point about every third game. I’m truthfully “fine” with that. Matt Cooke isn’t a goal scorer. He’s an energy/enforcer guy. He does have a Stanley Cup ring, too.
Honestly, the thing that bothers me the most about Matt Cooke? He’s 32. That’s the wrong end of where I think the Thrashers should be headed.

“The suspension is warranted because that’s exactly the kind of hit we’re trying to get out of the game. Head shots have no place in hockey. We’ve told Matt in no uncertain terms that this kind of action on the ice is unacceptable and cannot happen. Head shots must be dealt with severely, and the Pittsburgh Penguins support the NHL in sending this very strong message.”

If we’re in the 3rd or 4th round … and the Penguins indicate that Matt Cooke is available, I’d sacrifice a pick like that for him. There’s less than a 10-percent chance that 3rd rounder will develop into anything. I’d just want to make sure Cooke can’t walk after next season ends. If that’s the case, I’d rather stick with the pick, or trade it for an RFA or an NHL-player with 2-3 years left on his deal.

Brendan – I understand that you might want him for an “energy” guy. But, I gotta disagree with you on the “enforcer” tag. That guy is a punk. He chooses his battles carefully. He was forced to fight Shawn Thornton after almost killing Savard and he gets props for that one. But, his normal MO is cheap shots and chasing people not known for their fists. That was what made Kane getting a one-punch KO so awesome.
Boults is nothing like Cooke. He fights according to the code. He doesn’t look for easy bouts and he does not play dirty. Boults is respected around the league, Cooke is hated (except by his own team). I’ll take Boults over that hack any day of the week.
