Trade deadline comes day after Thrashers finally find a way to win

Today the news wires and twitter feeds will be buzzing throughout the NHL world as yet another trade deadline day is upon us. And with that, just as I do every trade deadline day, I will turn the blog over to you the cyber-reporters of the hockey blogosphere to report and discuss in the comments section below the deals from around the NHL as they happen.

As always, AJC Thrashers beat writer Chris Vivlamore will be on the job bringing us any news of trades involving the home team. You can follow him on twitter –>HERE<–.

Today’s player swap- meet comes just a day after our Thrashers managed to pull off only their second win in the month of February. Trailing 2-0 entering into the third period, Captain Andrew Ladd injected life into the team with a power play goal just 53 seconds in. Then, the Thrashers unleashed their secret offensive weapons on the Leafs…Tim Stapleton and Ron Hainsey.

Ron Hainsey and celebrates his game-winning overtime goal Sunday evening with his teammates. The win was only the second this month for the Thrashers (AP Photo/David Goldman)

Ron Hainsey celebrates his game-winning overtime goal Sunday evening with his teammates. The win was only the second this month for the Thrashers (AP Photo/David Goldman)

Stapleton, who was placed on waivers just last Saturday, tied things up with 4:36 remaining in the third. It was his first goal of the season and only the fourth of his NHL career. Hainsey then finished off the dramatic come back with a goal halfway through overtime.

I would call yesterday’s outcome a big win for the Thrashers, but after losing five straight and nine of the previous ten games in the month of February…really any kind of win is big. We’ll take what we can get in Thrasherville these days.

Not to be overlooked here is the fine play of Chris Mason…not just in the win Sunday but also Friday night after coming in to relieve Ondrej Pavalec to start the second period against Florida. Mason stopped all 25 Panthers shots he face in two periods of play and overtime then turned aside 22 of the 24 shots faced against Toronto. That’s a .959 SV% to help his team net three points over the weekend.

So as we enter into NHL Trade Dealine-A-Palooza 2011, both Atlanta and Toronto sit at 63 points after playing 63 games. Ninth place Buffalo is two points ahead of them but have a pair of games in hand while Carolina remains in eighth place with 67 points.

Is the win enough to get this team back into the playoff race? I dunno, but yesterday’s hero seems to think they’re still in the thick of it.

“[The win] puts us four away and, hey, we are in business here”, Hainsey said after the game. “If we are getting any further away the we are going to have problems. We are back in it”.

Honestly though, I think they’re gonna have to slice off a few more Ws in the coming week or so before the Thrashers are really “back in it”,

As far as being “buyers” or “sellers” today, we’ll have to wait and see. However, General manager Rick Dudley did tell C-Viv before the game yesterday that he’s expects to be actively pursuing trades today. So maybe a deal or two in the offing for the Thrashers.

Time will tell just what, if anything, will come of such pursuit. But if Dudley could get anyone to take… say… Fredrik Modin off our hands for the remainder of the season, then that would be nice.

And with that, I now turn this little online hockey forum over to you and the trading begins.

We’ve allowed less SOG lately. I like that.

Sadly, we’ve allowed quite a bit of quality chances against good opponents. I don’t like that.

I hope our D gets solidified a bit more, or at least we ship off the pieces that aren’t helping for pieces that are (like Oduya). If we have any hope of making the dance, we need a scorer and another superb D-man. I love what Stuart and Wheeler have brought to us, but those aren’t enough.

While it’s always nice to beat the Maple Loafs, it’s time for us to be sellers. Get ready for next season, just like Tronna is doing now. The playoffs are lost, even if we made it we would not win a series. Go to the playoffs when you are series to do some damage. Congrats to Sabres for getting Boyes, a #2 for a guy with 1 more year on his contract.

Is is just me or did Stapleton look like Theoron Fleury last night? Yeah I guess not.

I see Oduya moving today with Kulda taking his spot in the rotation, probably not Bogosian but you never know. Today is the day Dudley earns his paycheck.

We won’t do anything to take away from our chances to make the playoffs this year. We also won’t trade for a 35-year-old player either. If a deal comes up that meets that criteria we will certainly entertain it.” – Thrashers GM Rick Dudley as quoted in Chris Vivlamore’s story Sunday 2/27/2011.

Wake-up calls?

Three guys who were placed on waivers figured in their team’s scoring for big wins or OTLs recently…
• Stapleton ties the game vs. the Leafs
• Bernier beats the Thrashers with a shoot-out goal
• Hagman gave the Flames a 3-2 lead vs. the Sharks.

Pleasure finally meeting you last night Rawhide. Now, because I am superstitious, we must shake hands as we walk in the door of Philips before every game or we will never win again.

But seriously, the game yesterday was just such an emotional relief to finally see us play hard and get breaks to go our way mostly over the final 22:31. Was really happy to see Stapleton come ready to play a day after getting put on waivers.

As for trading day, I think Antro and Oduya are the most likely pair to go. Who do we get? I’d almost take a bucket of used practice pucks for #80 at this point.

Some decent talent is showing up on the waiver wire. So how about we give Winterpeg an expansion team that can build itself strictly from the waiver wire, and once they have 20 guys they are a go? It might be a mess of a team, but probably not the worst team in the league. And, more importantly, it would shut them up!

Unfortunately, it appears ESPN NHL Rumors is keeping the Bogo rumors going this morning and even mentions that Stuart is on the block again.

I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t want to see either guy go. Bogo is still young and Stuart has used his body and stuck up for teammates in his short time here, something this team hasn’t been doing for most of the year. If we have a defensive core of Stuart-Enstrom-Bogo-Buff-Hainsey-Kulda, I’d be very happy. I say package Oduya (who had a good game last night) with Bergors and that should get us something pretty good. Then call up Kulda for the last few games.

We won’t be sellers today, can’t pull the rug out from under the team the morning after a big win.

Only move I can see Dudley making is to move the 1st rounder to someone for a NHL player with at least a couple years left on his contract or RFA status.

Love the way Dudley operates. Awesome, but this probably also means if they don’t sign him today, Dudley will move him. LAC you’re off on Duds, I was highly skeptical given that Waddell was left as his boss, but WBF was spot on, Duds is his own man and his dealmaking and proactive stance in signing his RFAs during the season proves he is operating with the freedom from Waddell’s touch.

I also like Dudley dangling Hainsey out there, I doubt there’s interest, but good job by Dudley chumming the waters by claiming there is. $4.5m next year to play 3rd pair minutes? No sir, take those minutes up with a first year guy coming up (Kulda, Postma, YoMa) and spend the leftover on the front line forward we need.

Here’s my wish list today, if Dudley can pull this off I’ll buy my season tix back for next year before close of business:

Bergfors and Hainsey for Penner and their 2nd

Then we can root the boys on the rest of this year, they could make it interesting if they can pull off 5 wins in a row or something to get back in it.

New owners this summer that will green light $53m payroll, sign Brad Richards July 1st, and you’ve got a club that can be seriously competitive next year.

If you look at who we have to put in play to trade without sacrificing the future (for the 12th year), Antro, Hainsey and Oduya have the most potential of getting a valuable return that can help now. I’d keep Oduya over Hainsey and keep him paired with Stuart…..just sayin’, I think a lot of people underestimate Johnny O.

Antro/Bergfors/Modin/Stewart/Hainsey/Stapleton/Machacek…….not very appealing but I hope that’s all we’re dangling out there (maybe Mason now that he’s had 2 decent games in a row?).

Rallies-do you remember the big rally to keep the Nordiques in quebec City in 1995? 50 people showed up, and it does not matter if 500 or 5000 showed. This team needs to pony up for some players and show dedication and commitment. If they do, I am sure folks will march to the ticket office, just like did the first 4 seasons here.

Id actually like to keep Antropov and get another winger for him to feed by trading our Dmen. Ladd-Little-Wheeler is going to be a force to deal with because they all hustle and have speed. If we can get Antro a good winger to feed it frees him up. Last year people were so afraid of Max that it let Antro slip in the middle uncontested a lot and get some good looks. If we use teams that we are rumored to be talking to, a line of Kane-Antropov-Hemsky sounds pretty good as well and thats a fun top 6 to watch on a nightly basis. Also, keep in mind the guy rushed back from surgery because the team needed him badly so he sacrificed a lot be there, so dont discount his bad play for being lazy.

Bergfors was not considered a valuable asset. Goals is all well and good, but Bergfors has the physicality of a soggy donut. He did not fit this system, or this team.

Bergy is a puscatore and Dvorak does everything a 3rd line player should do at the NHL level: skate hard, hustle after loose pucks, kill penalties, score 12-15 goals / year, backcheck, battle in the corners, not be a big fat vijayjay a la Bergfors. Let’s face it, Dudley and Rammer gave him enough rope to hang himself but in the process he destroyed his trade value. Once again we see that Waddell gets fleeced in a trade as the Kovy deal is gonna end up netting us Cormier and whatever we get for Oduya.

I don’t understand the vitriol on the Dvorak trade. Bergfors hasn’t scored in forever and was basically playing 4th line minutes. Admittedly, I don’t know Dvorak’s game but he has to play grittier than Bergfors. You add him to the 2nd or 3rd line to cycle the puck more and a more responsible 2-way forward. Maybe he signs for 2 more years at $1MM or something. With Bergfors, he basically had one move….shot from the right hand circle.

And if the leaders in the locker room didn’t believe in Bergfors, this move makes sense.

Mike

February 28th, 2011

The +/- stat is more telling to me than the goals. They are only 4 apart and obviously Bergies wasn’t playing 2 way hockey very well and that is crucial in Rammer’s system. The team keeps saying that each one of them has to give 100% every night and I haven’t seen that out of Bergie.

Also, who has come out and said he is a rental? Stuart could have been a rental, but he has been re-signed. If Dvorak comes here and fits in, why couldn’t we sign him for a another year or so? Remember, we need some veteran leadership even with all the young kids so if we trade away Antro, that leaves us with very few vets next season if we don’t keep Dvorak around at a much lower Cap hit than Antro.

I say we wait a bit before completing judging this trade. Bergie wasn’t getting a lot of interest so I for one am glad Duds moved him.

I see three things in Dvorak :

+2 instead of -11 (-11!) …
1 Shorthand goal
3 GW goals

That tells me three things …

1) not many goals scored when this guy’s on the ice …
2) he’s a gritty PK guy – guess what we need?
3) he’s a clutch guy, too … can’t hurt to have more than that.

Still – let’s let today play out, he could well be on his way to another team before all’s said and done.

Either way, Bergie’s outta here, and Florida can enjoy his -11.

Why is everyone being so negative about this move? Dvorak can score and hes been on teams that have made stretch runs to get into the playoffs so leadership is important here too. Bergfors was the walking dead this season.

Dudley has been trying to trade him since the 1/3 mark and there were no takers. When a team is desperate to score and they bench a scoring forward you know the guy has issues. He essentially had Kovy’s defensive game and a 1/3 of his offensive skills.

If Bergs had turned around and played a team game, he could have been something. Rammer tried to turn him around. Cajoled, benched, shifted lines, with very little success.

But look at what is happening. Rammer and Duds have said they want a gritty team. They are signing gritty players and getting the skill guys longer contracts.

I am not upset by todays actions at all.

The more I think about this trade the more it grows on me. Looking over his career he has been consistently healthy, doesn’t post huge numbers (except for that 2000-01 season with 31 goals) but can be counted on to post between 10-15 goals and is generally pretty solid as a defensive forward. Look for him on the PK and he will be out a lot in situations where we are trying to protect a lead. Welcome to Blue Land Radek!

Really like that aspect of Wheeler’s game so far. Big dude, will battle, nice skiils, good skater. As much as I liked Pevs, I gotta admit that Stuart (now that he’s signed) and Wheeler for Pevs and Boris looks like a great deal right now.

Robbie Schremp, small (5′10″), light (184), and -19 on the year in 45 games. Just the center we needed for the playoff push. WTF?
Sorry to see Bergie go. I know that he’s been in Rammer’s doghouse all year. Healthy scratch, rotated down to 4th line, but he has so much potential if he’s on the right line. Wish him well even if it is in Sunrise.
Dvorak’s numbers have dwindled, but he has averaged 1/2 point a game over his career, and is an “even” player over the career as well.
Time will tell, but it feels like a rental.

Emily, I had the same feeling when I first heard of the trade. However, after further consideration Dvorak’s stats are what this team needs. +2 in his career (I think that is the right #) is WAY better than -19 for Bergs. Also, it isn’t a paltry +2, he is averaging 18+ minutes a game, takes very few penalties, and is a physical player. Not to mention his 31 goals for NYR, can he be expected to do that again? No. Bergs may end up being good, Rissmiller is a career AHL’er. With the newer rules from the lockout, a defensive O-man becomes that much more important. After more speculation, I think this is a good move.

If you don’t like Dvorak, then you don’t like hockey players.

In dealing Bergfors and Rissmiller, Dudley gets rid of two players that he had no intention of keeping next season and sheds $1.9 million in salary this year, and in exchange he gets Dvorak and a fifth-round selection and takes on $1.7 million in salary ($438k for the balance of the season. So, he’s plus $62,000 (as if he really needed to free up space) but gets an excellent role player in Dvorak for the next five weeks.

Now, I agree it looks like strange deal overall because of Bergfors’ age, but the kid simply hasn’t responded and wasn’t part of the long-term plan here. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if he wasn’t playing in Europe next season. Dvorak is versatile and he is much like Thorburn in that he doesn’t take shifts off.

The biggest disappointment is that Bergfors wasn’t the player some expected he would be when acquired. Dudley cut bait and opened up a roster spot.

While the possibility exists that there’s still some trade out there waiting approval by the league, I figured when we went dumpster diving on the waiver wire earlier today for Schremp that Dudley was done. Don’t blame him for not getting Penner since the asking price was too high.

I am surprised that no one stepped up to take Oduya or Hainsey, I think we have too much $ tied up in d. Now that’s not a problem if we do get a new owner/group/group with a figurehead/#no group/#KindcadeIsADramaQueen willing to go sign us Brad Richards this summer

I’m fine with Dudley keeping the core together. What are the chances of getting Slater back anytime soon, anyone know a word on that? He and Brumistrov may provide a jump to the lineup. With Bogosian eating more PP minutes, mabye they’re ready to put him on the first PP group along with Enstrom and move Buf in front of the net on the PP with Ladd and Wheeler on the boards.

Finish out the year strong, while it’ll take a 5 to 7 game winning streak to really get back in the race, it could be done, but even if not, we have new owners on the horizon and Dudley has my vote of confidence. Moving Peverley out for Wheeler and Stuart was solid. Giving up Bergfors for a UFA is a meh, but he’s been shopping Bergfors forever, no one wanted him. That deal works out good if Dvorak signs an extension, he’ll at least solidify our PK for now, which is a tremendous help.

Very surprising. Dudley tried leaking it out to Custance and Allen that there was “interest”, snicker, but no one bit. That’s ok, I like our d, just not the money tied up in it given our cap restraints, but that problem goes away if we have a new owner this summer willing to take the budget up to $53 to $55m or so. Stick a Richards on the top line and another winger that can pot some goals and lookout

Yes…Brett Festerling was the defenseman acquired in exchange for D-Mac. Here’s what I have on him….FWIW.

Brett Festerling is a 6-1 208 pound undrafted defenseman who will turn 25 years old this week. He has played in 83 games at the NHL level…all for the Anaheim Ducks…and has scored no goals, has 8 assists and is a +4 in those games. He’s only played in 1 NHL game this season. Last season he played in 42 for the Ducks netting 3 assists, 15 PIM, 27 blocked shots and 127 hits.

Festerling had spent the first part of this season with Anaheim’s AHL affiliate in Syracuse but was traded to Montreal on New Year’s Eve and was sent to play with the Hamilton Bulldogs.

All I know is that while the Thrashers are not the perfect franchise and the ownership has many issues, they are still my team.

Dudley is not perfect, but with what he had to work with he made some good changes. The penalty kill should be much better. The size has improved. Bergy hated being here from day 1 so that cancer was removed. Modin was going to be put on the shelf and now is gone. We got some youth and signed Stuart and Thorburn.

Did we get Crosby or Ovechkin for a 3rd round draft pick? Nope, but with the cards we had we did better than any of us expected.

Now let’s hope the boys fight hard down the stretch and if we get into the playoffs, hooray for us. If not, we are setting up the foundation for a team that can fill a couple of holes.

And if we get new ownership with deeper pockets the team is primed to sign a big money free agent in the summer.

I would’ve liked Penner, but it would have been too much to give up our #1 for just next year out of him. If some kind of deal could’ve been swung where we gave up our #1 IF he signed an extension, and we could have thrown in Oduya or Hainsey, then sure, I would’ve done it, but that was too much to give for one year plus a few weeks out of him. Penner would’ve fit in well here, methinks, but oh well.

Let the boys battle here on out and let’s pray hard for the right owner to buy the club, it needs to be a hockey guy. Please let it be a hockey guy. I’m sure Vivs is right about it being a group, but there needs to be one guy out front that’s a true hockey guy.

For those talking lines here’s my estimate factoring in the injuries of course…

Ladd – Lits – Wheeler
Kane – Antro – Stewie
Thorbs – Shremp – Dvorak
Boults – Stapleton – Macho

If I could toy around I’d try this for a top 6…

Ladd – Lits – Stewie
Kane – Thorbs – Wheeler

Bottom six is just about irrelevant right now isn’t it?

Anyways that top six experiment has everything to do with A.) Antro clearly not playing to his size B.) Antro likely needs to recover a bit more on the 3rd line (if he can) C.)Thorbs can center well enough and he works hard enough for me to think he’d do well maybe not in faceoffs, but he’d be Hell in front of the net. You can’t tell me that second line isn’t rad. They’d be TOUGH.

I’m guessing all of us who were under/under on Modin’s GP/goals were winners. Getting anything for guys who were UFAs ignored by most teams last summer (i.e., Modin and Dawes) isn’t bad.

While Duds didn’t hit any home runs today, I’m more impressed with the signings (Buff/Stuart/Thorbs). He wants to define the team and give us that missing identity by signing such guys before the last minute. That alone is a big departure from the Policies of the Unfireable One.

Joe Friday hit the nail on the head.

Dudley did the best he could do today with little $$$ and not much of real value to trade. Most of the teams that were active spend above $50M, several close to the cap. Dudley is stuck at $43M and change-not his doing. Neither is the empty cupboard of talent his doing either. It’s tough flighting with one hand firmly tied behind his back. And also remember that a number of clubs did not get involved in trades at all.

Penner would never resign here or just about anywhere else outside Californa. His girlfriend is from Suthern California, so he was going to sign in Anahiem or Los angeles when his current contract is up.. The Kings gave up more than we could offer, again not Dudley’s doing.

We are in a rebuilding program whether we like it or not.

When Burmistrov and Slater/Cormier return, although it may not be this season for all we know, Schremp, Stapleton and Maxwell are merely depth acquisitions. They eventually will play themselves in or out of a job, and Dudley didn’t give up much to get them when you think about it. If you have little depth, you have to try to get some somehow, and he did just that. If a goal scorer only doesn’t score like Bergfors, then what good is he? Duds has shopped him for a long time and took the best deal he could. At least you get a solid NHL player in return for a few weeks, and if you have any hope of a playoff berth, at least Dvorak won’t be a passenger on the train, like Bergfors has been.

The Maxwell, Stuart and Wheeler acquisitions are with an eye on the immediate or near future, and Dvorak is a now and maybe for a year or two more deal. They have been reluctant to add payroll so Dudley did the best he could in my estimation. He’s dealing from a short deck and all the face cards are in someone else’s hands. We’ve known this for a month now, so I simply must ask, what did you really expect would happen?

In year’s past, we would have seen this team sign Bergfors and then try to pass him off as the next coming of Marian Hossa. If a trade doesn’t work out, admit it and move on.

Regarding some of the Kovy trade re-analysis with Bergie being gone, it is disappointing that Dudley didn’t know Bergie’s character better. He certainly knew all about Cormier. ALL you do is critize others because of their point of view and act like an idiot doing so.
Hope all is well at the trailer park tonight !

no lac i like to talk hockey – and i will not be calling for rick dudley’s resignation any time soon. dudley is a good hockey man, very well respected across the league. he is the best man available to get this franchise in the right direction. and you are correct williams did resign with the kings 4 yres $14M good stanley cup experience. moulson also resigned, leino will probably resign in philly if the flyers can make the cap space for him. free agency is rarely the place you get better anyhow gotta get it through draft and development. cliff fletcher wouldn’t want it any other way, that’s why i use his name and proudly i may add.

Going into the NHL trade deadline day with minimal $s to spend is like going to a gunfight with a knife. Poor Duds.

Dennis Weidman goes for a 3rd round pick and an AHLer.
Maxim Laperrie goes for a 3rd round pick.
Chris Higgins goes for a 3rd round pick.
Brad Boyes goes for a 2nd.

Bergors has to be worth at least a 2nd rounder. I gotta think we could have gotten any of these players for Berfors (and throw in an AHLer in Rissmiller if needed). I’m thinking this didn’t happen cause we don’t have the budget to resign anyone. Nothing against Dovorak,..but I don’t think we got much of a return for Bergie.

With all the things the owners have confirmed this year I think we, the fans, are just a bit snakebitten.

Tell me, how do these owners find their way home each night?

HookyBob – Dudley announced to the world weeks ago that he had told the GM’s that Bergy was available. A 2nd was even rumored (on ESPN Insider, I believe) his asking price back then. I don’t think anybody was interested at close to that price. He has earned his reputation and I’ll bet Duds would have jumped at a 3rd weeks ago. Who knows though?

As far as the trade deadline, I thought it was pretty boring compared to 10+ days ago. Duds did what he could with what he had. We all Thrashy fans, can’t we just get along, lol!

Bergie made it tough to get much of a return for him. The fact that he’s due to be a fairly pricey player this offseason for somebody means that Dudley was stuck. Something tells me that being in Craig Ramsay’s doghouse means that you’re a real sourpuss. Rammer is not the type of guy who buries somebody on a whim.

Having looked over some stats, I find Schremp, to be a fairly decent looking player. Surprised NYI put him on waivers. I find the deal with Florida to be a poor one. After comments to the contray, Dudley did what he said he would not do, trade for older player. That I found disturbing, even with the waiver deal. We did garner three draft picks, so that could blossom some day. Overall, not enough was done to inhance the team and I do not believe they will make the playoffs, close, but not in, like last season. Lastly, to stan drulia and cliff, every time you guys blog, it is to attack someone. Why ?
You seldom, if ever, post comments prudent to the topic, only attacking one guy, with whom you disagree. You likely will disagree with me, will I be attacked ? Everyone has his or her thoughts about the team, ownership etc… if you disagree, fine, but do it in a positive manner, you guys look like a couple high school kids who just got cut from the team and have to whine about it by attacking another person and in turn you look like, what was it ??? Punks ??? Give it a rest, it is getting very old.

I don’t mind if we get older players who can still play the game. Dudley obviously didn’t feel the need to explain that caveat. Besides, I think anyone with a pair of eyes could see that Modin is an example of someone who can’t. Dvorak is a useful veteran player who provides something (PK stability) that we need. We also need a guy who can fill it up, but the odds of a penny-pinching organization like this acquiring a guy like that at the deadline, especially when it would be giving up a premium to obtain him, were nil.

Litz, good comment @ 6:17PM. I’m not a fan of mortgaging the future. There are very, very few times when I’d advocate doing that. Pretty much, it boils down to a window of opportunity closing, due to ‘one missing piece’ of the puzzle. Imagine if that ‘one piece’ missing is a goaltender? And suddenly a Hasek, Belfour, Luongo, Vokoun, Thomas, Kiprussoff type emerged at the trade deadline? Now, imagine that the previous three seasons ended in the CF or SCF, without a Cup win, precisely due to a failure in net. Mortgage the future then? Yes. The window is closing, and the missing piece is there. Gotta go for it, while you still can. It’s important to see the “big picture.” In the big picture, Vancouver and Washington have NEVER won the Cup. In preseason, Vancouver vs. Washington was a likely Stanley Cup Finals. Washington and Vancouver probably helped their causes with their deals today. I wouldn’t say either club “damaged” their chances.

I somewhat chuckle when I hear fans say, “it’s not worth winning the Cup compared to a decade’s worth of playoff appearances.” Yes, it is. The goal is banners hanging from the rafters. Does anyone in St. Louis jump up and down about the franchise’s long history of playoff appearances? Or, do Blues fans say, “I’d have traded 15 years of playoff berths for a Cup?” How ’bout in Chicago, where the Blackhawks used to make the playoffs for 28 straight years. The Blackhawks, from 1962 to 1997, made the playoffs 35 times in 36 seasons. No Cups. You trade playoff berths for Championships, every time you can. The Florida Marlins might not exactly be an exempliary baseball team, but they have NEVER LOST a playoff series.

Red Light, you are correct, sir. Rissmiller and a boughtout Brashear for Todd White. Now Rissmiller is a Panther, for Dvorak, along with Bergfors. See?? Todd “Milkcarton” White was good for something after all. Can it be argued that Todd White also drove Marian Hossa out of Atlanta? What’s the return on Hossa, these days? Daultan Leveille, Eric O’Dell (via Christensen), and Angelo Esposito. Colby Armstrong walked for nothing in free agency, to Toronto.

Red Light, what’s the official return on the Kovalchuk trade, now?

One of the things that makes Rawhide’s blog a good one … is the lack of cyber fighting and name calling. If, as posters, you find yourselves in such a situation … sometimes it’s best to just put that person antagonizing you on your permanent ignore list. (Stendec, Habs Troll, Pucks-n-snot, Brian come to mind.) Lots of times, when someone engages you on a ridiculous premise, you inadvertantly lend undue validity to their allegations/viewpoints. Plus, it drags YOU down to their level. And who, exactly, aspires to do that? Sometimes, staying above it … really is the best course of action. If someone asks you how often you beat your wife or kids, you don’t dignify the question with an answer. You put them on “permanent ignore.” And if you let take them off that list, do so knowing that you really should ‘know better.’ If someone is calling you names, it means they’ve run out of ideas to argue. And the person doing the ‘name calling’ is revealing more about themselves … then, perhaps, they ever intended.

No blog is perfect. It doesn’t exist. But when you objectively look around, this one is one of the very best. That’s a tribute to the blogmaster … who occasionally has to internvene to keep a few sociopaths off the bandwidth. He does a great job of it. This blog works best … when we’re actually discussing hockey … knowledgeably and persuasively, without disrespecting the blogmaster or the posters below. There’s nothing more American than to disagree about things. Several posters actually take the time and effort to put some research into their posts. And even when they do, they’ll “agree to disagree” about their opinions. I always used to like Pasi Nurminen, for example. If someone said to me, “Brendan, Pasi Nurminen is NOBODY in the annals of hockey history. Surely, you must know that.” That person is probably right. It doesn’t change that I liked Pasi a lot, who is on my list of all-time favorite Thrashers.

Read it too Brendan. Not moving Bogosian and any high picks were Dudley’s best move. People around the Thrashers are used to waiving good bye to those pieces when the Thrashers are in playoff range. In these times, I’m super glad that Waddell isn’t the GM.

The trades of Sopel and Modin were “we’re out of the hunt” sales. The pickup of Schremp and trading for Dvorak were “we’re in the hunt” buys. I’m not expecting a schizophrenic message like that to be successful.

Glencross is making $1.2 million this year and the Flames projected cap space for 2011-12 is just $5 million. Moulson was extended for three years at $3,133,333. Williams got $3,650,000 for four more seasons. Parenteau re-signed for next year at $1.2 million. Flyers likely will have to make a deal to fit Leino, Powe, Carcillo and Nodl under the cap. Jones, who is the big bodied scorer many teams covet, is still restricted according to Cap Geek and the Avs have plenty of money to spend. Hudler signed for another year in Detroit at $2.875 million.

No to Vrbata, Miettinen, Ryder and Kopecky. Yes to Laich, Richards and Jokinen, but doubt the Thrashers can compete in the open market for those three.

Red Light-man that Hossa trade is looking real ugly. Yes to Laich too, much much else available on the UFA market this summer.

Looks like it will take a trade to get us a top 6 forward. Somehow I think Bogosian will become the focus of any deal to bring in assets. Ypu all know I am against trading Bogo, but any chance to radically change the makeup of this team will involve Bogosian, especially when summer comes and current saleries come off the books.

It all depends on whether Dudley has the checkbook and guts to radically change the team. We already have alotta $$$ tied up in defense, more if the team resigns Oduya long term. Then again, Oduya may become the centerpiece in making a smaller deal that could bring in a #6 forward. But that’s not radical change. Think about it.

Bergie’s gonna HATE playing in slow-it-down Florida system. He will be moved at the deadline again next year, along with his tag of being a malcontent. It’s a shame when people throw away talent and opportunity. Not sure we can blame Duds for the way he turned out, saying there was a lack of due dilligence, as he never had this tag when he was a Devil.

East Point Bob,
The other night when I saw Schremp’s name on the crawler I told the wife I would claim him in a heartbeat. I was really surprised and happy when I saw that we got him. IMO he has been very productive for NYI and I think waiving him was dumb but I don’t know their situation.

Modin is gone !!!! yahooo ! I am glad Dudley has made the moves he did. Getting rid of the coasters. I am ready to see the Thrashers become a more physical team. The soft way they have played lately allows the other team to make pretty plays instead of worrying about being hit by a freight train.

i agree with you on schremp, i think he carries the stigma of being a high draft pick that did not pan out. boris valabik will carry the same cloud over his head until people just see him as a hockey player, not a top 10 pick struggling to make the game. i hope schremp brings the islander work ethic here, we could use it. expectations can be very emotional, especially with hockey execs that overestimated a player’s worth.

All I’m saying is, cutting bait on someone like Antropov now, after major hip surgery, isn’t a good idea. We know what he’s capable of. He needs rest, not a change of scenery.

As time goes by, we can play 6 degrees of separation and probably make most any trade look bad – or pretty good. All you can really do is judge the players and the teams involved at the time of the trade. Also factor in the motives of the GMs: acquiring picks, salary dump, playoff push, etc..

Red Light, re: 6:36 AM post, it hardly seems like the Thrashers got equal value for either Kovalchuk or Hossa. Makes me think that the old saying is true, “You can’t replace a (supply superstar’s name here). Then don’t grow on trees.” When we look at a Cormier, an Angelo Esposito, an Oduya, or a Colby Armstrong, seems like we could have gotten them some other way … than to give up a Tier I player.

Red Light, Atlanta might be able to compete for Jokinen, out on the open market. But, as always, there’s a time when to fold your hand, and know that you’re beat. I wouldn’t anti-up or go ‘all-in’ on a Jokinen type. Richards, either. In my view, Brad Richards was never worth $7.8 million. I understand why then Tampa Bay GM Jay Feaster made the move. The team was facing its 1st year under the cap, and wanted to keep its corps together. So, to put its ‘commitment level’ on full display, it promptly gave Richards the THENNN ‘league maximum’ contract. In fairness to Richards, he was coming off a Conn Smythe trophy playoff campaign. So, an argument can be made about salary.

Call me crazy, but I’m eager to see our newest Thrashers in action, especially Ben Maxwell.
