Today the news wires and twitter feeds will be buzzing throughout the NHL world as yet another trade deadline day is upon us. And with that, just as I do every trade deadline day, I will turn the blog over to you the cyber-reporters of the hockey blogosphere to report and discuss in the comments section below the deals from around the NHL as they happen.
As always, AJC Thrashers beat writer Chris Vivlamore will be on the job bringing us any news of trades involving the home team. You can follow him on twitter –>HERE<–.
Today’s player swap- meet comes just a day after our Thrashers managed to pull off only their second win in the month of February. Trailing 2-0 entering into the third period, Captain Andrew Ladd injected life into the team with a power play goal just 53 seconds in. Then, the Thrashers unleashed their secret offensive weapons on the Leafs…Tim Stapleton and Ron Hainsey.

Ron Hainsey celebrates his game-winning overtime goal Sunday evening with his teammates. The win was only the second this month for the Thrashers (AP Photo/David Goldman)
Stapleton, who was placed on waivers just last Saturday, tied things up with 4:36 remaining in the third. It was his first goal of the season and only the fourth of his NHL career. Hainsey then finished off the dramatic come back with a goal halfway through overtime.
I would call yesterday’s outcome a big win for the Thrashers, but after losing five straight and nine of the previous ten games in the month of February…really any kind of win is big. We’ll take what we can get in Thrasherville these days.
Not to be overlooked here is the fine play of Chris Mason…not just in the win Sunday but also Friday night after coming in to relieve Ondrej Pavalec to start the second period against Florida. Mason stopped all 25 Panthers shots he face in two periods of play and overtime then turned aside 22 of the 24 shots faced against Toronto. That’s a .959 SV% to help his team net three points over the weekend.
So as we enter into NHL Trade Dealine-A-Palooza 2011, both Atlanta and Toronto sit at 63 points after playing 63 games. Ninth place Buffalo is two points ahead of them but have a pair of games in hand while Carolina remains in eighth place with 67 points.
Is the win enough to get this team back into the playoff race? I dunno, but yesterday’s hero seems to think they’re still in the thick of it.
“[The win] puts us four away and, hey, we are in business here”, Hainsey said after the game. “If we are getting any further away the we are going to have problems. We are back in it”.
Honestly though, I think they’re gonna have to slice off a few more Ws in the coming week or so before the Thrashers are really “back in it”,
As far as being “buyers” or “sellers” today, we’ll have to wait and see. However, General manager Rick Dudley did tell C-Viv before the game yesterday that he’s expects to be actively pursuing trades today. So maybe a deal or two in the offing for the Thrashers.
Time will tell just what, if anything, will come of such pursuit. But if Dudley could get anyone to take… say… Fredrik Modin off our hands for the remainder of the season, then that would be nice.
And with that, I now turn this little online hockey forum over to you and the trading begins.

Frosty- Florida has the broom out! You really think Dvorak will stay and play inspired hockey???
Le Thrash have been in the running all year. I’m not happy about their Jan/Feb. swoon but sheesh, there is no comparo between being Fla and a basement dweller, all year, and being Thrash and driving us all crazy with their unpredictability…but still in the hunt…

So much for Marty staying near his pregnant wife. Maybe my source was thinking of McCabe. My super-secret source, by the way, was twitter. I forgot who already. I am not, generally, “in the know” myself about a darn thing.

I wouldn’t expect Reasoner to get moved at this point. I think Tallon likes him a lot and figures him into their future plans.

Huh, do what? unpredictability? The trashers are the most predictable team in the league. Have a little spurt that everyone gets all gung ho about and then their true colors come out. The panthers and trashers are on level ground. The only thing the trash have been in the running for all year is their yearly swirlie they give to themselves in a toilet backed up with diareah.
As I stated before, they are only 2 points behind us, they have a game in hand, we could end up behind them at seasons end.

My source tells me the thrashers are gonna shed more payroll in their attempt to be the lowest paid team in the nhl. My source is also telling me that we should expect Steve Rucchin and Mike Dunham to be brought back to the thrashers in their attempt to not sign players 35 or older

Matt- I wouldn’t say there was anything worth trading for out there. Penner would be a tier II level free agent and the Kings had to mortgage their immediate future to get him. That will go down as a bad trade for the kings unless Penner carries them deep this year. Imagine what they asked for Hemsky then… maybe Bogo and our First rounder? I just don’t see teams willing to give up anything this year.

Sounds like Dudley is making this year a defense from hell for opposing forwards and is going to try and make a big signing for UFA this summer to get that scoring. Smart since we finally have a team that is starting to be built from the goal. Wait, only took how many years to figure that out.

While the possibility exists that there’s still some trade out there waiting approval by the league, I figured when we went dumpster diving on the waiver wire earlier today for Schremp that Dudley was done. Don’t blame him for not getting Penner since the asking price was too high.
I am surprised that no one stepped up to take Oduya or Hainsey, I think we have too much $ tied up in d. Now that’s not a problem if we do get a new owner/group/group with a figurehead/#no group/#KindcadeIsADramaQueen willing to go sign us Brad Richards this summer
I’m fine with Dudley keeping the core together. What are the chances of getting Slater back anytime soon, anyone know a word on that? He and Brumistrov may provide a jump to the lineup. With Bogosian eating more PP minutes, mabye they’re ready to put him on the first PP group along with Enstrom and move Buf in front of the net on the PP with Ladd and Wheeler on the boards.
Finish out the year strong, while it’ll take a 5 to 7 game winning streak to really get back in the race, it could be done, but even if not, we have new owners on the horizon and Dudley has my vote of confidence. Moving Peverley out for Wheeler and Stuart was solid. Giving up Bergfors for a UFA is a meh, but he’s been shopping Bergfors forever, no one wanted him. That deal works out good if Dvorak signs an extension, he’ll at least solidify our PK for now, which is a tremendous help.
