On Friday night February 25th, 2011 the Atlanta Thrashers will host the Florida Panthers in a Southeast Conference showdown. The scheduled start time for the game is the same as it is for all Friday home games in Atlanta and exactly one week from the posting of this blog, 7:30pm.
If you are a fan of the Thrashers…if you’re a fan of NHL hockey and support the league remaining in this city…. if you have been sickened by what the team’s current ownership has allowed this franchise to become…if you are mad as hell about what you’ve learned recently… then you need to be there.
In saying that, I’m looking at all of you out there in the blogosphere…all of you who frequent this online hockey forum as well as the one hosted by AJC Thrashers beat writer Chris Vivlamore. And that’s quite a lot of individuals, so I’m told.
I’m looking at those fans who normally make it to just a handful of games each season. I’m even looking at those who may make it to but one. If that’s the case…make next Friday that one.
Need a good deal on tickets? Well, simply click –>HERE<– and use promo code RAWHIDE.
I’m also looking at those of you who make it to almost each and every home game as well. Those would include season ticket holders, be it full or partial…my good friends up in The Nasty Nest… the fine people of The Smirkin’ Chicken…all those who frequent the Thrashers Message Boards…the boys at the The Blueland Chronicle as well as the many others who host their own independent Thrashers blogs…and last but certainly not least, the well over 800-member strong Atlanta Thrashers Fan Club.
Yes…I’m looking at all of you.
If you have the physical and financial means to do so…next Friday night, be there!
THEY POINTED THE FINGER AT YOU SO GIVE THEM ONE BACK
As you already know by now, just a few days ago Atlanta Spirit co-owner Michael Gearon pointed his finger at you, the fans of Atlanta Thrashers hockey. He pointed the finger at you citing your lack of attendance as one of the main reasons he and his fellow Atlanta Spirit partners may be forced to consider offers from those who may seek to relocate this franchise elsewhere. He did so just after we were given the good news of Dustin Byfuglien re-signing and just before the team went on a 3 game, week and a half long road trip.
Next Friday will be the first game played back at Philips Arena after he and his cohorts kicked us square in the teeth, gut…and other regions just south of there. As such, it will be the first time you can let Mr. Gearon and the rest of this cluster-flop of an ownership group know just what you think of them since this news story broke. In essence, this will be the first chance you get to shake your finger…whichever one you choose to display…right back at them all.
Really, this is the only way to let the Sucknificant Seven hear from you… seeing how none of them seem to possess the testicular fortitude to stand before you in a town hall meeting forum and answer your questions directly. Team President Don Waddell may at some time do so…say what you want about him but he’s at least been willing to show up and take the heat in person. However, don’t hold your collective breaths waiting for Gearon, Levenson or any other of the co-owners to man up and do so any time soon.
No, they won’t be there…but you should be.
FILL UP PHILIPS AND BE IN FULL VOICE
Yes, Philips Arena needs to be packed next Friday night…packed to the rafters. It should be filled with fans who are not only there to root for the hometown ice combatants, but also with fans who are willing to scream, chant and/or otherwise make it clear to the NHL world that it is not they who have cause this mess to proceed to this point. But rather, this is the direct result of what the owners have done to this organization since it purchased it seven years ago.
And I’m telling you folks…thousands of empty seats will not carry that message for you.
Also by packing out and rocking out Philips Arena Friday night, you can send a message to any would-be investor that this is what the place was like before the Great Octocluster ran it into the ground. And it could be like that again.
You not only need to be there for the game, but you need to show up well before the scheduled puck-drop time. You need to be outside of the arena and inside CNN Center with your signs displaying not only your love and support for the team, but also your feelings for this band of knuckleheads who have all but killed off this franchise.
I’m also guessing there will be a few members of the media there, both of the local and out-of-town variety. Given the events of this past week, I’m sure someone will want to gauge the mood of the fans here. So, you need to avail yourself to any reporter and any news cameraman there to express your thoughts to not only the NHL community around the North American continent, but the sports community in general as well. You need to have your faces in their cameras and your voices should set their audio equipment ablaze.
Now, I’m not saying to be offensive or vulgar in your demeanor…but do be loud, do be clear and do be passionate.
But most of all…do be there!
BOYCOTT THE BOYCOTT
To those of you out there who still hold to the belief that some sort of “boycott” is the best course of action, allow me say two things to you.
1. With all due respect for you opinion, you’re dead wrong.
2. Regardless of No. 1, there is still a way for you to help the cause…assuming, that is, if you are truly a fan of the team and support NHL hockey in Atlanta.
Simply join the rest of us before the game in front of Philips Arena and in CNN Center. Be there to voice your distain for the current ownership group to the media. Then, when the rest of us head in to watch the game, you can head into Taco Mac to watch it while enjoying some wings and an adult beverage or two.
If you simply do that, it will not put one single dollar into the pockets of the Atlanta Spirit, LLC.
Maybe none of this will matter a hill of beans to those who make up the Atlanta Spirit, LLC, (Lies, Lawsuits and Contempt). Certainly if they have shown such distain for you over the course of the last several years, it’s not hard to think they won’t really give a damn now.
But one thing is for sure. If hockey fans across this great land of ours tune into NHL On The Fly next Friday night to watch highlights from around the league, and they see a vast sea of empty blue seats on a night it really, really mattered for fans to be there…then all that will do is feed right into the false stereotypes that the Atlanta market is not suited for the sport at this level.
It will also serve as more ammunition for Gearon, Levenson and the rest of the biggest abomination to ever own a professional sports franchise to use when trying to convince Gary Bettman that they have little choice but to consider selling to someone intent on relocating the franchise away from Atlanta. And you don’t want to help supply them with that ammunition, do you? No…I didn’t think so.
Friday night…February 25, 2011…Philips Arena…be there!
For Thrasherville!

I look at the trade today as 2 1/2 players for 1 player. Duds traded Peverley for Wheeler and Stuart. Plus, he got Bobo’s NHL salary off the books. And off the 50-man roster.
We will keep Wheeler. But a d-man could need to have his clothes ready to pack….

We need to show up with our jerseys on, with signs, and ready to let the hockey world know the problem in Atlanta has not been the fans! We are trying to get Atlanta’s leaders to lead on this issue. Please see the “Five Part Plan To Keep The Thrashers In Atlanta” via the link below. Please click on the “How Can Fans Help?” link in the left margin – contact community leaders and tell them to help keep the Thrashers in Atlanta – we have over 1,100 “likes” on FB in a day and a half – the NHL is watching – showing up on Friday is the most important thing to do:
http://www.keepthethrashers.com/fivepartplan.html
We have been on NBC, CBS, and FOX news this week in Atlanta trying to get the community leaders to take action before it is too late. We appreciate all the great calls, emails, and wonderful ideas to keep OUR team. We do have great and passionate fans in this town. face book!

A small note: real hockey fans should be supporting their team regardless of it it wins or not. When the arena is packed and loud it’s a good morale boost for the players and they’ll be willing even more to win for the fans. More fans in the seats means the team may be able to afford a few extra good players since the team is not too close from the salary cap.
If you want your team to stay in Atlanta you need to support it!

I love my Thrashers, and I want them to have the ownership they deserve…I woulld rather that be here…In
opinion, to blame us is ignorant. I have poured my heart, soul, and money into this team. Converted my husband from NASCAR to hockey. Started playing myself…I was devastated when X went away, and I don’t know if I could survive my team leaving….the Thrashers deserve better, and so do we. They had over ten years to give this team an identity. Playoffs were sold out, and the crowds were amazing…proving if you can produce a winning product…they will come. They treated this team like a second rate citizen…made poor decisions. They have lied to us, If this team gets sold and moves away…I hope each one of those &%$#tards goes bankrupt and has to move into a condo like mine.It is them who has failed us, and they have failed this team for over a decade…and THAT is crappy ownership.

I agree with Kevin that people should support their team no matter what…and I do….I am always there at the games…win or lose…but Atlanta is a GREAT city with plenty of things to chose to spend your money on…someone who doesn’t “know” hockey will never come to watch a team who is not winning, when they can waspend their hard earned money to watch the no 1 ranked Georgia gymdogs, or Tech B-ball, or well playing Falcons, or west side story at the fox. To get non hockey fans in the building and convert them…we need to be winning, we need to make the playoffs that 16 NHL teams make every year, and we need to do it by buildinng our team from our young core players…not renting a veteran, and go out in four post season games only to not sign him.Let’s go Thrashers….beat the crap outta the Panthers, and show those bunch of quitters who own us, that we are better than they are….

gretchelby – well said! I have two favorite teams and sadly enough Thrashy is doing better than my #1 fav (grew up in CO, gimme a break)
. NO way my Avs are making the playoffs but I still watch every game and attend every one I can, win or lose. I love Thrashy and this team has a chance. The core is being built and if they can keep it together this team is going to kill it in the future. This year may not be the year but if you call yourselves fans it shouldn’t matter. Period.
I believe it is criminal what A$$G has done to the team. I hope that for all of the Thrasher’s earned $ that gets sent to the Hawks they fall flat on their faces. I know that is vindictive and not good for the city, but as long as it hurts A$$G it will put a smile on my face. Atlanta is going through the same type of thing the Avs are: really young team trying to define itself. Both are very exciting brands of hockey and I pray to Forsberg that they stay and prosper.
Take light in the fact that I will probably be kicked out of a local bar for being too loud next Friday

On another note: with all of the player movement Boston has been up to (and I do not think they are done), they are looking like they could give Philly a pretty good run. That would be one hell of a series. Prediction: Vancouver vs Boston for the Cup. Right now I would put my $$ on the Canucks, but I will wait to see how the Bruins’ chemistry irons out with the new players. How nice would it be to be Vancouver and not have to make a single move trade-wise and still kick a$$?

Lawn furniture, lol! But I don’t RL, I get the “opportunity”, if you will, to see the ‘Nucks quite a bit and they are more physical than you think. Not the Sedins of course but it would be interesting to see blazing speed vs huge bodies.
Vancouver’s GF/GA differential is +57 while Boston’s is +41. Basically a draw in my opinion.
Luongo is posting a .925 save % while Thomas is trumping Luongo with a .938 SV%. Boston has better D and is more physical. Vancouver has more prolific scorers. It would be one hell of a match up and anybody who would bet on that series is either filthy rich or a dumba$$.

Red Light, can you clarify something for me? Did Brian Burke just get back the 2011 1st round and conditional 2nd round pick that he gave up to get Kessel? If so, what a frekkin’ coup by Burke!! That’s probably a lottery draft pick, and high-end 2nd rounder!! Or, was the 1st rounder … that which traditionally belonged to Boston? Meaning? Well, let’s just say the Bruins win their 1st round series, and that means pick # 23 to # 26 in the Draft? Let’s just say the Bruins reach the CF, is that what “kicks in” the conditional 2nd rounder? And is THAAAAT the pick the Maple Leafs originally held, but traded to Boston for Kessell? Or, again, is that pick # 53 to # 56, that would traditionally belong to Boston, assuming the Bruins win a round of playoffs? Actually, if the Bruins went to the CF, then we’re talking about a 2nd rounder at # 57 or # 58.

Tonight, Florida lost and Ottawa lost. So did the Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks. And Chicago lost in regulation time … to the Columbus Blue Jackets. I’m sorry, but those teams really have to be thinking about strategically selling off assets. Ottawa still has some much more to deal. Red Light, your thoughts on Chris Philips? Or even Alfredsson?
Buffalo laid an EGG, as in a GOOSE egg, against the St. Louis Blues, at home. Ouch! See, those are the games that teams in a playoff push just cannot lose. What a missed opportunity for the Sabres to really be back into the hunt. St. Louis, God love ‘em, are not going to make the playoffs. That game … has to be a win.
The effect? Well, now Carolina’s win over the Flyers really has the ‘Canes entrenched into the 8th spot, for a while.
Ya know, through a decade, I’ve never heard the chant, “Fiiiire Wa-ddell” resonate through the arena. I think I’d rather enjoy that. He’s earned that, from fans. Seriously, why does that man always get a pass from the hockey fans at Philips Arena? In Washington, when Head Coach Glen Hanlon faltered, the fans serenaded him with a chorus of “Fiiire Hanlon!” And the next day, Hanlon was gone. And Bruce Boudreau was in. It’s been three division titles, and counting, for the Capitals. Although, how many of us would bet against TB winning the SE Division this year? At the # 2 seed, I honestly think the Lightning could have a very deep run, this year. If they draw the NYR at # 7, and then draw the NE Division Champ in the CSF, they could find themself in the CF with either Philly or Pittsburgh. Even if they lose, that’s a heckuva year for the Bolts, who many thought would not be a playoff team this season.
Final thought: The Atlanta Spirit, LLC has been less than desireable as hockey owners. And it’s easy to dislike them, distrust them, and laugh at how litigious they are, and deem them “pathetic” in terms of their ability to understand the dynamics of running an NHL franchise. But do we really want to antagonize a group of people who have the power to (1) extend Don Waddell’s contract, AGAIN, (2) sell the team to an entity that would relocate it, and (3) lower the budget even more for next year and/or not add anymore payroll this year? Or even worse (4) move assets like Kane or Bogosian or Burmistrov out of town? Now, I honestly think this ownership has come to deserve to public humiliation. But I want them to do the ‘right thing’ … and that’s sell the team to someone who will CARE for it and KEEP it here. But to do that, they must surrender some of the venue’s proceeds, otherwise … the next owner is just (1) an idiot who will quickly realize how badly he got fleeced, then hold a “firesale,” or (2) a corporation or billionaire looking to acquire an offset asset for tax relief. In short, someone who potentially CARES LESS about the Thrashers than the Spirit Group does. And there’s a ‘chilling’ thought for a cold, February day.
Where am I going with this? Maybe the signs shouldn’t be so much, “Spirit Group Sucks” “I hate you, Spirit Clowns,” and “FUBAS, ‘Nuff Said.” I don’t encourage a sign that reads, “I don’t brake for Bruce Levenson in the crosswalk.” Instead, signs like “Save our Thrashers!,” “Calling all billionaire hockey fans, we’re your market” or “Arthur Blank, Coca-Cola, think it over. Be our new owners!” might be a better way to go. I think those kinds of signs might resonate better in the Commissioner’s office, too. Gary Bettman is well aware that we hate the owners, and we don’t hold Don Waddell in much esteem, either. But what he doesn’t know … is if the ownership were changed, if the attendance situation would improve. The answer is, “yes.” New owners would at least be given a “grace period” before we hold them in something resembling equal contempt.

I couldn’t imagine not being there. If there ever comes a time from October-April where I don’t lose my voice on a weekly basis, life just wouldn’t be the same. Being raised by hockey fans, and younger than most of Blueland’s inhabitants, I’ve had the opportunity to be a die-hard Thrasher fan,and nothing else, having no other team before them. With my life revolving around hockey, and me quite possibly being the Thrashers biggest fan on Earth, if they were to leave… my life might as well be over. Although our fan base is dwindling, the ones we have, or atleast myself, live and breathe hockey, and the Thrashers even more so. I’ve stuck with them through thick and thin, and it’s about time we get some superior leadership that will do the same. But, what bothers me the most is the fact that, although they’ve been trying to sell them for six years, it only gets blown this far our of proportion when we’re in the midst of our best season yet, and by far the best set of men on the ice. Especially those who WANT to be here, even after all this crap they’re put through. They need to give it up, and just leave them here. With the right ideas, I honestly believe we can revamp the fan base. Especially with how involved the players are in all sorts of things across Atlanta. The personalities of these men alone, on and off the ice, could pack the place if it were only more apparent to others…

One game with a crowd energy that is not sustainable (until the team actually starts winning) will mean nothing to real investors. You can’t keep a guy just because he loves Atlanta. Dudley’s argument was that 3 small centers are not working. No way is he giving up Burmistrov or Little. You can’t trade Slater when he is out with a concussion. I will do my best to be there Friday, BUT, we need to be there more than just one night. I already have tickets for Sunday. We have to show a potential investor, if there is one, that we have a dedicated fan base. Perhaps one could consider it an investment in the future, not in the current owner’s pocket.

Brendan, yeah the Buffalo loss is staggering and Carolina looks good to go right now. Also good post about possible playoff scenarios involving the Lightning. Now they just picked up Eric Brewer from the Blues for basically nothing. He waived his ‘no trade’ clause to go to Tampa, giving up his ‘C’ in the process. Impressive, but necessary after the schooling by the Red Wings the other night.

I agree completely with the “Boycott the Boycott” strategy. To sit out would simply justify the ridiculous notion put forth by Gearon that poor fan attendance is to blame for the team’s woes. He’s got it backwards; the team’s woes are to blame for poor fan attendance. I find it ironic that these clowns want to call themselves owners but they don’t take ownership of the problems they have created for this franchise.

The St. Louis Blues made their second major deal in less than 24 hours when they dealt former No. 1 overall pick Erik Johnson to Colorado early Saturday.
Hours after sending captain Eric Brewer to Tampa Bay for junior defenseman Brock Beukeboom and a draft pick, the Blues dealt Erik Johnson, also a defenseman, to the Avs along with forward Jay McClement and a first-round pick for rookie defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, third-year forward Chris Stewart and a second-round pick. Very interesting deal between Western Conference foes.

Brendan: The Leafs only get the Bruins No 1, not their own previously dealt No. 1, and the Flyers No. 1 pick for Versteeg. But, two first-round picks, no matter where they fall, are certainly better than none, particularly in a draft that is said to be more balanced than in some previous years. Wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Burke use them to move back into the top 10 on draft day if he found someone he really likes.
With only two games before next Friday Feb. 25, the Thrashers are guaranteed to return home in no better position than 9th through 61 games when facing the Panthers. Conceivably, if things go wrong and they lose twice, they could be as low as 11th.

Hmm, just saw the Avs -StL trade this AM. Johnson should turn into a top D man in his time, he was the overall pick in 2006 – hope that works out. McClement is a good penalty killer but I have to say, Stewart was a pretty special player, fast and tenacious. Started the year blazing he broke his hand. But we have all been b!tching about our defense so I guess you have to plug the holes. And when we get Flash and Mueller back next year we won’t miss Stewy. Not what I was hoping to see this AM.

I think it’s a great move by the Blues. Johnson is an under performing former No. 1 overall pick at this point. Yes, he’s only 22, but to get a kid like Stweart, you have to give up something. Shattenkirk will learn to play better defense, but he’s already a good puck mover and PP guy. They lose a first rounder but get back a second rounder the same year in which the Avs use the 1st pick.

Shatt won’t be missed at all, but I have already about 5 buddies call me up this AM and they are NOT pleased about losing Stewy – really not pleased. So at this point nothing I can do about it, hope Johnson turns out – I think he will. And now I am hoping StL finishes above the bottom 10 in the league so we can use that first rounder this draft, else we will have to wait till 2012 to use it. If we get it this year that is 2 first rounders and as Borat would say “I liiike”.

Plus, if you put any stock into the minority player conspiracy theory that would be another plus in that column. Well, it’s more fun to file lawsuits than to SUCCESSFULLY run professional sports franchises.

I guess I just don’t understand why the Blues “quit” on Erik Johnson. I like Chris Stewart. But a Tier I guy, he is NOT. We’re talking about the loss of a 1st overall pick. I wouldn’t begin to categorize Erik Johnson in the same boat as Patrik Stefan. I think Johnson has had some injuries, but at 22 years old … is really time to abandon ship, on what was supposed to be a “franchise” player? I do think Shattenkirk will develop into something good. But is ANNNNY of it … commeasurate to what a 1st overall pick should be??
Let me rephrase that … are we prepared … to call Erik Johnson … one of the “biggest BUSTS in NHL Draft History.” To me, that’s what the St. Louis Blues are implying. He’s 22, and they’ve already seen enough. Or, they believe Shattenkirk’s better.

Having had the opportunity to see Shatty quite a bit (every game in fact) there is no way in hell he will ever be Johnson. And I think you are taking Stewart to lightly Brendan. Shattenkirk has only had 46 NHL games, so lets not write him off just yet. Stewart is seen by Blues GM Armstrong as one of the best young power forwards in the game, and they need someone to score dirty goals. They have plenty of skilled forwards, but fewer gritty ones. Johnson isn’t a bust, but the Blues expected more of the No. 1 overall pick. He may do very well in Colorado, but this is pure and simply the Blues reach to get what they feel is a dynamic power forward. I wouldn’t read anything else into it. The media likes to say you can’t give up on a former No. 1, some GMs feel the same way. Talent is in the eye of the beholder. Blues like Stewart and the Avs probably liked the return of Johnson and a No. 1. Segmenting the deal, Shattenkirk for McClement? Sure, why the heck not?

ZAvalanche, I think you should be ‘dancing’ rather than ‘depressed’ over this trade. Okay, Stewart is a good player. But he’s a 3rd line center. His game may be intense, and that’s GREAT, but you got Erik Johnson and the Blues 1st rounder, which could wind up being a lottery draft pick, for his departure. Plus, McClemment, for however long he stays.
I’m sorry, I really think Colorado won this one. For the Blues, heavy sigh … it’s 0-for-everything since 1967. Several Years ago, they hired John Davidson to oversee operations. Now, I like John Davidson, as a human being. His heart’s always in the right place. He tries very hard. He’s very passionate about hockey. But how long did he leave Larry Pleau in charge?? And then, the big move in the GM chair … was Doug Armstrong, whom the Dallas Stars had quite seen enough of. I don’t know why God doesn’t seemingly like the Saint Louis Blues.
Pleau took over the Blues in 1997. Things started out pretty well. Seven straight years of playoffs. St. Louis won the President’s Trophy in 2000. They did win 5 playoff series under Pleau’s stewardship, including reaching the CF in 2001. But really, and can we be honest?, what has Larry Pleau done since the Lockout?? The Blues made the playoffs once since then, and that was a divinely-inspired “miracle” run from 13th in the Western Conference to sixth (6th) on the final day of the season. But in those 2009 playoffs, they were promptly swept out by Vancouver, outscored by more than a two to one (2:1) margin. The NHL Network had that “big Draft Special” on the Blues, that they ran ad nauseum. Well, for all their plottings, all their schemings … all their ‘best laid plans,’ where are the St. Louis, through this MAGNANIMOUS rebuilding project? Cripes!! They might be worse off than the Thrashers, under Waddell’s reign of power. And the Blues had umpteen picks in that draft special. And a lot of them did manage to find their way in to the NHL. But are the Blues … today … one of the most feared, youngest, most highly-skilled teams in the NHL today?

While I agree with you on some points, and am disgusted that if we fill the Bulb Friday night, that all of those hockey $$ will only go to enrich ASG’s stake in the Hawks and have no affect on their desire to “discard” the Thrashers, the point of filling up the building is a message to Bettmen: “It is not the fans, its the owners!”

Hard to tell at this point as all involved are young and unproven. Stewart will be a fantastic role player, quite possibly much more, in his coming years. And who knows, Johnson could turn into the Ryan Leaf (sp) of the NHL, certainly StL thinks so else they wouldn’t ditch him. I guess I will just have to wait and see.
Thrashy should clean up on Edmonton tonight, good luck. And I am interested to see if we play our new keeper, Elliot, and to see how our new guys do. One thing you can say about this time of year: it definitely isn’t boring!

Red Light, I’m not sure how many former 1st overall picks have actually been traded. Of course, the Thrashers come to mind, since both their 1st overall picks did wind up traded. Stefan to Dallas, for Niko Kapanen and a 7th rounder, who became Will O’Neill. That was an inconsequential trade on every front. Kovalchuk wasn’t traded away because … he blew chunks … and the organization had to get a bag of pucks for the return. Obviously, that was the case of a player not having FAITH in the how the Thrashers were being run. Refusing to sign, but a sizeable asset, the Thrashers traded him to NJ.
Okay, other 1st overalls traded? It’s hard to think of them, off the top of my head. Lecavalier, Nash, Crosby, Ovechkin, DiPietro, P. Kane, Tavares, Stamkos, Fleury, and Chris Philips are all still with their original teams that drafted them. Although, stay tuned on Chris Philips, who I think is a pending UFA, so Ottawa will likely move him, now that they are eliminated from the playoffs, in 15th in the Eastern Conference. Who else was a 1st overall, who got traded? Ed Jovanovksi, from 1994, has been moved a few times, I think. Oh yes! Joe Thornton, the top pick from 1998! He was moved to SJ from Boston, for W. Primeau, B. Stuart, and Marco Sturm, if I’m recalling correctly. San Jose is one of the few teams that has made the playoffs EVERY YEAR since the Lockout. Boston, uhh … well … they recovered from that trade. They’ve made the playoffs for the past three seasons, including being the top seed in the East in 2009. But, they did NOT reach the CF, for such an excellent year. Bryan Berard was a top pick from 1995. He had injuries that curtailed his performance. Roman Hamrlik, top pick from 1992, played on his fair share of teams. Alexander Daigle is regarded as a bust, essentially, despite playing in the league many years. Eric Lindros, 1991, refused to play for Quebec. The Nordiques picked up Forsberg and Sakic, and parlayed that combo into two Stanley Cup wins. Owen Nolan was a top pick from 1990. Wasn’t moved moved in his prime. Mats Sundin, top pick of 1989, was never traded. He left Toronto in free agency for Vancouver. Mike Modano, 1998’s top pick, played his whole career with Minnesota/Dallas, until leaving last season in free agency for Detroit.
Okay, enough of that. I think bottom line here is … trading someone who went 1st overall, before or during their PRIME YEARS … has proven to be a “rarity” and pretty close to a “no gain” situation for the team that did it. I’ll give Quebec/Colorado the exception there, for their deal on Eric Lindros. But … that player wasn’t dealt because Quebec didn’t want him, it was that Lindros REFUSED to play for them, sitting out a whole season. So, Quebec tried, as best they could, to get equal assets.
Is the desire for Chris Stewart so grandiose … that getting this gritty 3rd line center was worth coughing up the guy who went first in his draft year, at just the age of 22??

EJ was overpaid relative to his impact and moving him now to get a very reasonably priced Stewart (who won’t have much leverage for a huge raise after this injury-plagued year) and Shattenkirk who is still on his ELC. Blues may try to move even more salary if they keep fading further and further behind the pack. A history lesson about the St. Louis Blues.
Franchise opened for the 1967-68 season for $2 million expansion fee and the owner bought the St. Louis Arena from the Wirtz family (Blackhawks) for $4 million.
After a financially devastating 1976-77 season that saw the Blues pare down their staff to three employees, general manager Emile Francis (former coach and GM of the Rangers) was able to convince Ralston Purina chairman R. Hal Dean to invest in the team.
In 1981-82, Dean retired and Ralston Purina soon lost interest in hockey. Citing losses of $1.8 million per year, the company put the team up for sale. When the league blocked the sale of the Blues to Saskatoon interests in 1983, the company padlocked the Checkerdome and left the franchise on the NHL’s doorstep. The Blues, with their ownership unresolved, did not participate in the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. Entrepreneur Harry Ornest bought the franchise off the scrap heap.
In 1986, he too decided to move on and sold he team to a local ownership group led by Michael Shanahan during the 1986-87 season.
The team’s success in 1990-91 inspired the top St. Louis corporations to come together, buy the team from Shanahan and build the new Kiel Center (now the Scottrade Center), which opened in downtown St. Louis in 1994.
In September, 1999, the consortium of 19 St. Louis companies which owned the Blues and the Kiel Center announced that the team and the rink had been sold to Bill and Nancy Laurie.
Dave Checketts and SCP Worldwide (SCP) were officially introduced as the new owners of the St. Louis Blues and Savvis Center on June 30, 2006.

Red Light, I totally forgot that Wendell Clark went 1st overall. How’d I forget that? He was one of my favorite players. Why would anyone trade him, I do have to wonder. Also, what idiot GM traded Dale Hawerchuk?
Good research though. Unless the GM is trading a player for “mitigating circumstances,” such as “character issues-trouble with the law or drugs or booze,” “player refuses to play or re-sign,” or “excessive injuries,” I just can’t wrap my head around trading a former 1st overall. Either the NHL Central Scouting was just plain, flatout WRONG on Erik Johnson … or the Blues got fleeced. I guess time will tell. And that 1st rounder … could very seriously be a Top 10 overall pick coming back to Colorado. Coughing up a Top 10 pick for Shattenkirk and Chris Stewart is a hefty-enough price, before they threw in Erik Johnson. They essentially gave him away.

Bill, I understans exactly what you are getting at 100%. But in ALL honesty how can you go to
an event at Philips after his comments against the fans of all people. Can those jerks not admit any guilt ???
Trading Jack Johnson would be like trading zach B. No different. If you can get a solid asset in return, then do the deal. Plus Johnson is a lot like zach B. watched a Blues game recently and Johnson was a half step behind and could never hit the net from the point. Plus he, like zach B. would never hit anyone with any degree force. I see a lot of the same in zach B. Stewart was injured when we played Colorado, so we did not see him and the D-man they got set a Colorado franchise record for consecutive game scoring earlier in the season. I just wonder who might get left behind in Edmonton, at the VERY least, asg would not have to pay for a plane ticket to Atlanta… That way it could pay for my seat at the game.

It’s my opinion that Doug Armstrong can’t and won’t fix the St. Louis Blues. I don’t have an answer for that one. Despite what we saw in Calgary, I always thought that Darryl Sutter was a good hockey man. Understands the dynamics of running an NHL team. He overpaid for a few players, and it sank him. I’m not saying Darryl Sutter could fix the Blues, either. Is Dale Tallon still looking for a job?
I don’t know what to say. I wish the St. Louis Blues every success. That franchise needs to catch a break, and soon. Their last trip to the Finals was 1970, back when 12 teams were in the league, and one conference was exclusively that of the Expansion teams. I guess the thinking there was … the six new teams wouldn’t have anything to cheer about for a decade, if they had to be going up head-to-head with the “Original Six” teams, so … they made a Conference where the expansion clubs would battle each other … for the right to be annihilated in the Finals. The result? St. Louis won all three years, and went 0-12 in Finals. The experiment was declared “over” at that point. The Finals were a foregone conclusion, that nobody cared about.

Uncle Milty - And as I did for some other good people from your town back then, I will also invite you to return next winter and explain why the Thrashers still are not in Winnipeg.
If you’re wondering…no I’m not happy with what has gone down this week. But I’m not sure all is lost here yet. Regardless, I just don’t see the NHL abandoning this market for Winnipeg. That’s not a slap at your fine city…but there’s a reason they let the Jets leave for Phoenix and I don’t think the situation is there for a return.
You will obviously disagree….but, then that’s your right.
Now, I’m off to enjoy today’s game with some friends at a local watering hole.

Thank you for the very generous offer, Red Light….I just may be there already (i.e. on my own dime)…I haven’t decided. I’m certainly tempted for all the good reasons listed.
I’ve also thought about this “one last time” sentiment.
I got so mad at Kincade and Gearon a couple of days ago, I was against even that.
I’ve got to think about it some more. I do agree that the ’sustainable’ part has merit (i.e. it should be for all remaining games to make an impact on a potential investor)….but, then again, I want this ownership to lose as much money as possible. I abhor filling the coffers for those who don’t deserve it. But, this team does provide an entertainment option and I do not want it to leave, in the end.
I’ll see what my original hockey-tutor is doing (who lurks here and may even post a time or two)….maybe my wife….It’s great food-for-thought…

I agree…pack it out. Don’t let them blame it on us. It’s the product. These Thrashers do work hard, but I’ve heard enough from the broadcast team about “effort.” You are measured only by Ws and Ls.. Acknowledge the obvious:. this team lacks the skill to compete in this league on a nighly basis. That’s management’s fault. And, Dudley fits right in. ASG treats this operation like a hobby instead of a business Dudley thinks its a hiring hall for his friends. Meanwhile, poor Craig Ramsey doesn’t have a clue what strings to pull.. And somehow all these isues are our fault. Of course, those stupid Canadians in Winnipeg will show up regardless of the product.. Oh, I forgot. They already lost one franchise there for non-support.

Oh, I don’t know, but I kinda like the Blues roster going forward. Jackman is the oldest d-man at 29, and McDonald is the oldest forward at 33. Insert the injured David Perron, Basil McRae’s 20-year-old son Phillip, defensemen Ian Cole and Brett Ponich, and this is a young roster that can grow together.
Oshie, Backes, Stewart, Pietrangelo, D’agostini, Berglund, Steen, Polak, Shattenkirk is a pretty darn good young group if they can stay healthy!
T.J. Oshie • Alex Steen • Patrik Berglund • Chris Stewart • Brad Winchester • Andy McDonald
• Vladimir Sobotka • Brad Boyes • David Backes • B.J. Crombeen• Matt D’Agostini
Alex Pietrangelo • Barret Jackman

Apparently you’ve zero clue. The reason the team left was a Canadian dollar that was 60 cents to the US dollar, the team played in an ancient arena that was owned by the city and offered the owner zero revenue other than ticket sales. Now the Canadian dollar happens to be worth more than your own, the city has a new arena owned by TNSE – one they derive every dollar from, and TNSE also just happen to be the ones trying to buy your team. In fact, 50% of the TNSE group just happens to be the 20th richest man in the world, David Thomson. How is your list of prospective ownership… just so we may compare?

2-0, Thrashers!! Goals by Byfuglien and Ladd. Mason, performing adequately. So, here it is. We’re playing a bottom-feeder “lottery draft” team, we have the lead … and we’re 38 minutes from regulation. This is our season. Why ’sugarcoat’ that? If we lose this team, when will our next win matter? Carolina is already at 64-points. The Sabres still have games-in-hand.
We’ve already squandered so many, many, many chances at this point. Honestly, six wins in the last 24 games?? That’s 6-13-5, for a .354 clip. There’s no way that kind of percentage can get it done. We basically have to go 17-7, the rest of the way.
Rawhide, I’m with you. I don’t think this team is gone. Certainly, not by next season. That’s a pipe dream. Could 2012-13 be elsewhere? Maybe. But I still wouldn’t bet on it.
Re: One game vs. selling out the rest of the way … we gotta sellout the rest of the way. But, how does public perception change? Not really on a dime. It takes time, and “positive reinforcement” that the AS,LLC is actually TRYING again. For this ownership, they’re in “show me, don’t tell me” status with most fans. Saying things like, “We’ve got cap space” doesn’t matter. What matters is making the trades that bring in the payroll. These acquisitions of Stuart and Wheeler are a fine start. Two weeks too late??? Better “late” than never?? Well, not if we miss the playoffs. Then “too late” MATTERED.
Red Light, re: Blues … don’t we always say that about them? Things like, “Look at their potential!” “Look how young they are!” “Things are certainly headed in the right direction.” “The sun is rising in the ‘Show Me’ State!” All that works ‘just fine’ when a franchise is less than a decade old. But into their 5th decade, that talk wears thin. The Don Waddell classic, “I think we’re close, real close” to being a playoff team is like hearing … “Tomorrow’s forecast … sunny to party cloudly, a slight breeze, with a 10-percent chance of rain.”
What does that forecast really mean???? It’s not saying ANNNNYTHING. If it’s sunny, it’s sunny for 2 hours. If it’s partly-cloudy, it’s partly cloudy. A breeze always comes and goes. And a 10-percent chance of rain means … that when you get soaked, because you left your umbrella at home, that the meteorologist is off the hook. After all, he did tell you … there was a TEN PERCENT chance of rain. That’s the history of the St. Louis Blues. Shining moments of wonderfulness, followed by disappointment, and improper planning. And bad luck. That’s it, in a nutshell, Red Light. I wish St. Louis the very best. But it never happens for them. The Blues are in their 43rd season. Makes the failures of the Atlanta Thrashers tolerable. Just think, Thrasher fans, 32 more years of failing to win the Cup, and we’ll tie the Blues!!! And L.A. Kings. And Toronto Maple Leafs.

First Mason gives up the post as the d-man is watching from 5 feet away.
Second no one picks him up on a give and go.
Third Oduya is SOOO out of position and then never even tries to recover when Hall is whacking on Mason.
And I am not even going to talk about the first goal Mason gave up in the second. That would get a squirt goalie pulled.
And the penalties we took were the classic “200 feet from the net” variety.

3 power play goals in the third by the Oilers (Hall). No one (Oduya) challenges the teenager Taylor Hall in front of the net. No grit, no toughness.

I’m glad that Gary Bettman saw this game, in person. I’m sure if we emailed him … and asked him what he thinks it might be like to be an Atlanta Thrashers fan … he’d understand. He’d say, “Clearly, you’re in a playoff hunt, but dropping games to the NY Islanders, Maple Leafs, Oilers, etc. And next up, the playoff-less in a DECADE Florida Panthers. You’re 6-14-5 in your last 25, and two of those wins were ‘miracle comebacks’ versus the NY Rangers and Florida Panthers. As Commissioner, I do understand the situation.”
As Commissioner, his concern should be with the Oilers, and their direction. That’s a market that needs a little bit of propping up. It’s hard to draw players there, unless there’s a contending team in place. He’s got to see this game as ENCOURAGING for the Edmonton market. Hall, Eberle, etc.
I’m getting ready to make a statement that might catch on, Rawhide. Ready for it? “Atlanta was READY for the NHL. The NHL wasn’t READY for Atlanta.” Perhaps that requires some explanation. Though, I think most get it. The NHL cannot simply place a team just anywhere. It’s got to assess the market they attempt to infiltrate. When the NHL identified Atlanta as “fertile” ground to reestablish NHL roots, it was CORRECT. Point of fact, the Atlanta Thrashers soldout 38 of 41 home games in 1999-2000. In short, Atlanta was READY to receive this product. Interest level was high. Fans were energized. All it needed … was the part to be delivered by the NHL. Namely, it was the responsibility of the NHL to PROPERLY VET an ownership to oversee this new franchise in Atlanta. The NHL had to REALIZE that it was a notch in the Football belt, with some pretty strong baseball ties. Plainly, the NHL had to know … that the “start up” process in Atlanta required a CONTENDING product within 4-5 years. It HAD to know that.
I repeat, the NHL HAD TO KNOW THAT. The weather’s good here. We have a zoo. We had a major attraction in the Aquarium in the works. We have Stone Mountain. World of Coca-Cola. Mountains are a 3-hour drive. Savannah’s 4.5 hours away. Disney World is a one-day trip. Lakes Lanier and Allatoona, and Callaway Gardens, are but a short get-a-way for Atlanta residents. The NHL knew this. The NHL dropped the ball on their research on the ownership for the Atlanta market. You can lose in Boston. You can lose in New York City. You can even lose … in HockeyTown and Chicago. It’ll be okay. But you cannot lose in Atlanta. You cannot lose in Phoenix. You cannot lose in Raleigh. You cannot lose in Nashville. You cannot lose … in Columbus, OH. Pretend there were a team in New Orleans, Louisiana. You can’t lose there, either. The ownerships of those franchises have to undergo ADDITIONAL scrutiny. The NHL never GOT READY for the Atlanta market. That’s on them. That’s on the NHL. The interest level here … was run off, by antagonistic ownership and incompetent management.
Red Light, just out of curiosity, when was the LAST TIME the Atlanta Thrashers soldout a home game? It’d be fun to sellout Philips Arena, just for “old time’s sake.” Let’s call it, “Turn back the Clock Night –Pretend it’s October of 1999.”

Rawhide, (pause,) at what point … do we “officially” call a ‘time of death’ on a season? At first glance, when the team is ‘mathematically eliminated.’ Right? Well, I think it’ll take 17-6 the rest of the way to make it in, right? This is a team that’s won only six of the past twenty-five (6/25), for a .340 clip.
Are we really going to cling to the ol’ mathematically eliminated approach? Or, can we correctly assess that this trade deadline should be about addressing the future. Just b/c there are 23 games left doesn’t mean we should ignore the trending of the previous 25. After all, 25 games ago, we were ALSO STILL sizing up the playoff possibility. We now have a very telling ’sampling’ from which to draw conclusions. Every player knew what was at stake. Every player is accountable for performance. The Coaching knew what these past few games meant. Since the All-Star break, this team is 1-6-1. Let’s just brush it under the carpet, maybe nobody will notice???
The truth is … we aren’t winning games. The truth is … we’re losing to the teams beneath us. The truth is … our ownership set up a budget for this team to finish 29th or 30th. Look at our goal against … compared to the rest of the league. Any second now, Sage of Bluesland will show to proclaim, perhaps CORRECTLY, that every win from this point forward … screws up our draft pick this summer.
Thoughts, please? If you agree it’s time to sell, we don’t have a Savard, a Hossa, a Kaberle, or a Kovalchuk to move. So, what can we sell, and what can we get?

I don’t think the draft pick matters that much.
Until we add more guys in that 27-34 range who can get the job done consistently at the NHL level, we’re going to struggle. The problem with talented guys who are 27 to 34 years of age is that they require a team to spend some money on them. Since we do not spend much money (I appreciate the Buff deal, but that was crapped on immediately), we are stuck with a team that is too young and has very little talented veteran leadership. Today, our most talented veteran offensive player (Antropov) took one of the dumbest penalties we will see this season. The mere fact that Nik Antropov is our most talented veteran offensive player says a lot about what we are lacking.

Therein lies the problem: our 27-34 y/o guys stink. Thorburn with the dumbest penalty ever, Antropov not producing (at least he was fighting for position on his penalty), Oduya playing like a statue, Mason always too deep in the crease and Hainsey having to drag Bogosian’s butt all over the ice. And what has Boulton done in 2 months other than beat up Prust? He was on the ice for a goal scored for the first time in about 19 games. And don’t get me started on Ramsay! Where was Stuart in the 3rd period??

Brendan – This season is over. We aught to be a seller at the deadline… starting with Oduya. Hainsey, Antropov, Stewart and Bergfors would be the others. Picks and prospects would be the price. Whatever Dudley can get. We need to start moving salary to have room to resign Ladd, Wheeler, Kane, etc. on the CHEAP ASG budget.

Kovalchuk and Tallinder, I believe, have put the Devils up, 2-0, vs. Carolina. And we cannot be happy that Carolina is losing, or loses this game. We don’t look at the teams around to FALTER to help us make the playoffs. We have to take care of our OWN business.
And now, it’s 3-0, New Jersey. Brian Rolston with the goal.

Forget about the playoffs; think more about what we can get for the future:
Oduya, Modin, Mason to Anaheim for a bag of pucks and (hopefully) at least a 5th round pick.
Stapleton and Stewart to Canadiens for a 2nd and 3rd round pick.
Bogosian (AKA NHL BUST) to the Senators for 2 1st round draft picks (2012 & 2013 nhl draft)

The 3rd period made my eyes bleed, but remember… this is NOT the roster that we’ll be rooting for once we get good, solid ownership. We already know that the Atlanta Spirit is selling the team, and quickly if they can. Now we MUST show up and prove that we’re a good fanbase to keep the franchise here. Are we going to let another city get the benefit of the competitive team that’s coming?
In the meanwhile, suck it up and consider your ticket money as an investment in OUR future.

Ya know, we should also talk about Chris Mason’s performance. A lot of times, when a player is in that low, there’s just not much net at which to shoot. So, the only viable option is the five hole, to see if the goalie will open the wickets. Mason, to me, was at fault for four of those goals, starting to the MPS goal. Mason must make that save. Two of the Taylor Hall goes were on Mason, period the end.
Remember something about Nik Antropov, he’s played the whole year hurt. Another organization probably would have longterm IR’d him for the season, bringing in a player at $4 million salary, to take his place. Antropov might be just fine next season, when healthy.
Lost in this game, is an utterly beautiful goal by Evander Kane, short-handed, that put us up, 3-1. That should have been the GWG.
Fan, re: Edmonton. True or false, you couldn’t remove hockey from the fabric of the Edmononton lifestyle, if you dropped an atomic bomb on it? You can lose in Edmonton. What ELSE are people going to spend money on? Those five Cups were unquestionably … the single most important thing that ever, ever happened to the community of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Is there any chance … kids would ever stop going to pee-wee hockey in Edmonton? Is there shortage of sheets of ice in Edmonton? There are probably more rinks in Edmonton, than in the entire State of Georgia. In this market, the product has to have the BELIEF of the townspeople to be successful. This week, the hockey fans of the region learned that its ownership have been trying to sell this teams within five minutes of acquiring it. Not exactly ‘confidence-inspiring’ in the “committed ownership” department. Which begs the question, “If the owners don’t care, why should the fans?” Fan, can you imagine … the Edmonton market going a DECADE without a playoff win, with the SAME General Manager in place? Think the Edmonton media would gloss that one over, burying hockey on the back page of the newspaper? C’mon. You can lose in Edmonton and sellout for 300 straight games. Going to Hockey, for Edmonton, is like breathing for the rest of us.

Brendan – That would be when they are mathematically eliminated, of course. But you may look back at today’s devastating loss as when they went into hospice care.
Uncle Milty – 60 days you say? OK…that’s what, sometime in mid April? Tell ya what, my friend…I’ll give you a few extra days, say right until the end of April.

Red Light, the Devils have been 14-1-2 in their last 17, and have won six in-a-row. In your opinion, can the Devils make the playoffs? Follow up question, will the Devils finish AHEAD of the Thrashers?
Follow up question, still, would a Devils run to a playoff spot be the greatest comeback ever?
Rawhide, do you think the 2011 Thrashers will equal the mark of the 2008 and 2009 Thrashers, at 76-points? At present, the team is playing at a .340 clip over the past 24 games. If the team continues at the present rate of a .350 clip, they’ll bank between 15 and 16 points out of the remaining 46 that are possible from 23 more games. 60 + 15 = 75-points. 60 + 16 = 76-points. My gosh, what if we don’t even bank that? We’d actually be BELOW where we were the season after being SWEPT by the NY Rangers, in 2008. Well, 2009, too. Both seasons saw 76-points, when Waddell blustered that the Thrashers were “close, real close” to a playoff spot. It was also the time when Levenson said, “We’re way ahead of where Philadelphia was in 2007, before they went to the CF in 2008.” So, if we finish below the point total for 2008, are we worse off then where Philadelphia was? Yes!! Clearly. The Flyers beat Washington and Montreal before bowing out to Pittsburgh in 2008. The Flyers were again, a playoff team, in 2009. They were bested by the Penguins in six games. Last year, the Flyers defeated New Jersey, Boston, (after rallying from down 0-3,) and Montreal before bowing out in Game Six of the Stanley Cup Finals.
So, we’re still right on pace with the Flyers, right? And the rebuilding job that Philadelphia’s GM, Paul Holmgren did, after the team finished DEAD LAST in the NHL, and to make things WORSE from them, the Flyers also LOST the lottery draft to Chicago. Chicago took Pat Kane 1st overall. Philly took Jame van Riemsdyk. Painfully enough for Flyer fans, Pat Kane scored the OT winner on Leighton that clinched the Cup. How ‘big’ was that lottery draft win for Chicago??

1972/73: On October 7th the NHL’s two newest teams faced of in New York with the Atlanta Flames edging the Islanders 3-2. A week later the NHL came to Dixie as the Flames and Buffalo Sabres played to a 1-1 stalemate. As expansion teams go the Flames were competitive finishing 7th in the Western Division with a record of 25-38-15 which was better then 4 established franchises, with more the double the point total of the Islanders their partners in expansion.
1973/74: Led by Rookie Tom Lysiak, who finishes 2nd in voting for the Calder Trophy with 64 points the Flames make the playoffs in just their 2nd season with a record of 30-34-14. However, in the playoffs the Flames would be extinguished right away by the Philadelphia Flyers losing the first 3 games by a combined score of 13-3, before losing the 4th game in overtime to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions.
1974/75: NHL begins divisional play with the Flames being placed in the Campbell Conference’s Patrick Division. The Flames continued to play solid hockey posting a winning record for the first time in franchise history with a record of 34-31-15. However, the Flames would finish in last place and would miss the playoffs in a competitive conference.
1975/76: Led by All-Stars Tom Lysiak and Curt Bennett the Flames continue to play decent hockey posting a 35-33-12 record to earn their 2nd playoff berth in their 4-year history. However, the Flames would exit the playoffs without a win again losing 2 straight 1-goal games to the Los Angeles Kings, 2-1 and 1-0.
1976/77: Willi Plett captures the Calder Trophy with a team high 33 goals as the Flames make the playoffs again with a record of 34-34-12. In the playoffs the Flames would be matched up against the Los Angeles Kings again dropping Game 1 of a 3-game series 5-2 in Los Angels. Needing a win to keep their hopes alive the Flames beat the Kings 3-2 to avoid the sweep. However, in Game 3 back in Los Angeles the Flames would be put out with a 4-2 loss.
1977/78: With a strong top line of Tom Lysiak, Eric Vail, and Willi Plett the Flames put together a solid season finishing in 3rd place with a 34-27-19 record. However, in the playoffs the Flames would sputter again as they lost 2 straight games to the Detroit Red Wings.
1978/79: The Flames would finish in last place in the 4-team Patrick Division. However, the Flames were not an ordinary last place team, nor was their season ruined. In fact with a 41-31-8 record the Flames would reach 90 points for the first time in franchise history while making the playoffs for the 5th straight season. However, in the playoffs the Flames would lack spark again as they are swept by the Toronto Maple Leafs losing 2 straight games by a combined score of 9-5.
1979/80: The Flames continued to post winning records making the playoffs for the 7th time in their 9-year history with a respectable record of 35-32-13. One of the highlights of the season came when Jim Craig made his NHL debut just 6 days after he backstopped the US Olympic Hockey Team’s stunning Gold Medal. The debut of Jim Craig would bring a rare sellout to The Omni as he stopped 24 of 25 shots leading the Flames to a 4-1 win over the Colorado Rockies. However Craig would not win another game in 3 starts. In the playoffs the Flames would burn out quickly again as they won just 1 game as they fell to the New York Rangers in 4 games. Despite making the playoffs 7 times the Flames had just 2 postseason wins to show for it. Off the ice the Flames situation was more tenuous as owner Tom Cousins saw his real estate empire crumbling. In order to save himself from bankruptcy he had to sell the Flames. With mediocre fan support and the lack of due to a lack of major television contract, their were few offers from local interest so Cousins turned to Canadian Nelson Skalania, who had the intention of moving the team to Calgary. In a late bid to keep the team in Atlanta actor Glenn Ford offer Cousins $8 million dollars, but it would not be close to the $16 million offered by Skalania who moved the team north of the border.
1980-1999: The Flames would go on to find a loyal fan base in Calgary, as Atlanta became a minor league city. However, in 1988 thing began to change as Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. The trade made hockey more popular in the United States and opened southern markets. Eventually the NHL would make a return to Atlanta as media mogul Ted Turner was awarded an expansion team that began play in 1999.

Well I would love to be there but my closed its doors a month ago and the Atlanta job market is not good. I think 10% unemployment may have alot to do with empty seats. The Team started out well but has since gone into the tank. I have to worry about keeping my seat in my house on unemployment. If employers in Atlanta would get off their duff and start hiring more then more people will have money in their pocket to buy tickets and support the rest of the local econmony. I don’t that a group of owners like the ASG is keeping people away its more like the enconmony. I have been to games when there 17000 this year and when there were 12000. Going downtown during the week is hard with the traffic and the start time of 7pm. I do hope that Philips Arena is soldout for Friday night’s Panthers game. Just to sellout the arena one last time. Maybe the players aren’t feeling the ‘urgency’ since the fans aren’t feeling the ‘urgency.’
To me, finding a local interest the keep the team here in Atlanta shouldn’t be hard, so long as FUBAS will cut them in on the profits from the venue. But if the Spirit Group, “no, we won’t share venue proceeds,” then I don’t see how any local interest would consider buying the team. But, I don’t know how that gets this team out of the lease it signed, until 2019. How does that work? The owner that relocates the team pays two rents on one hockey team??

Smoothie, Agreed on the Nashville to the southeast thing and the Peg to the central. Looking like it’ll happen more and more with every game…anywho. Divisions and Conferences ARE POINTLESS. Here’s why…
There’s nearly always in every league teams filed so to speak under the wrong catagories due to them being grouped according to location. So for my OCD personality, I hate seeing it. It’s like filing things alphabetically, but cheating on a few when you can’t make room for them in the correct areas. Stupid.
Look the new all-star format helps. The schedule can stay similar in order to cut travel expenses. The playoff format could remain except all 30 teams would compete against each other all year in the standings, that’d make the post-season more credible too, IMO. Why not we already went to inter conference play and changed the names of both the divisions and conferences. I say do it.

Brendan – On the lease breaking thing…
I think that sounds right that there’d be a penalty, however I think it’d be 100% legal AAAND a lot of money, but definitely NOT for the full term. More like a big lump sum, probably equivelent to a a year or two. Perhaps the league could force the F.A.S., LLC to eat it since if you think about itthey pay rent to themselves. Plus, if everything is sooo very bad financially for the F.A.S., LLC then not only would they sell for a minimum, but even a loss because if $10 million is what the lease generates, but the supposedly lose $20 on the team alone, then they should be happy to cut that loss knowing full well that there’d be an opportunity to get an AHL team or something else in there within a few years. Of course I’m probably giving those add wizrds too much credit in the common sense dept. If it’s a matter of bankruptcy and Bettman won’t step in (mark my words he won’t with PHX going on), they’ll sell what they can.

IR13 – its a shame really but I’m not sure the NHL is viable as a 30 team league. At least in markets like Nashville, Raleigh and Columbus, its the only game in town after football ends as college football is huge in the latter two. The NHL probably should have never gone away from the history rich division names of Adams, Patrick, Smythe and Norris. Six teams in each might have been better with less dilution of the product and perhaps a better TV deal that focuses on rivalries more than Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin.
Honestly, do we really need hockey in Atlanta, Columbus, Miami, Nashville, Phoenix and Tampa? Hockeys expansion to the south has done nothing to help TV ratings on the national whole and big numbers even the Olympics have been driven by huge markets in NY, Philly, Chicago and Pittsburgh’s crazed Crosby-sniffing fans. Kudos to Carolina for building a decent fanbase, and Nashville too, but it’s not like the NHL is really thriving BECAUSE of expansion. At some point the NHL is gonna wanna make some money and the short-term success of Winnipeg, aided by a huge relocation fee I bet, will help the league recoup some of the dough it lost in the PHX fiasco. The economic playing field will never be more level with the dollars being almost equal and its tough for Atlanta and Miami to compete with Canada’s govt subsidized national TV deal. Really, in this case, none of the variables favor Atlanta. So I say:
Screw you Ted Turner and the bison you rode off on. And eff you Time Warner for making a crooked deal to a group of a$$ clowns who have no business near a sheet of ice and go to hell AS, LLC for making the destruction of Calumet Farms look like child’s play compared to ur litigious BS!

I agree with Smoothie, all teams listed have done very little for the NHL. NHL currently a 5-6 rated sports option in the USA and remains stagnant. The product has thinned out considerably and when you have reported 16 teams in the league losing money… you’ve got a serious problem. The NHLs ownership selection is a joke and seems to always burn them in the end. The NHL seems to attract corrupt ownership grps. NHL has no business being in many of these sunbelt states… Sick and tired of watching many teams playing to a few thousand fans, free tickets, gimmicks and other nonsense. Too many signs pointing to this being ATL Thrashers last season. I say good riddance to them. I am glad they will be coming to wpg. This city will explode in excitement.

The fine city of wpg will gladly welcome the Thrashers. And, yes, as Uncle Milty stated, you need to inform yourself on the history of the jets demise which had nothing to do with lack of fans, spirit etc. With the latest news out that “ATL needs to find an ownership grp willing to keep team in ATL in 6-8 weeks” suggests they already have someone in mind or the team altogether has been sold…. I am leaning towards they are already spoken for and TNSE will be scooping them up.

How do you know a boycott won’t work. We have had sellouts before and look what good it has done. Not a soul in the stands would send a message to all owners and leagues everywhere that if you mess with the fan base for years and years we have the power to pull the plug on the owners and the league. As a prospective owner a total boycott would show me more passion and unity in the fan base than anything else.

On a mini-vaca to Orlando and went to the Lightning-Panthers game last night in Tampa. All I can say is this — so THAT is how to run a hockey franchise? Can someone bring the ASG folks to Tampa Bay for a game so they can see this? A team-sponsored 5k run in the morning. Events outside in the Fan Plaza before the game. Concession stands in the arena that were not only open, but selling good food with cheerful people. Oh yeah – did you know that Philips doesn’t have to remove the caps from the bottles of soda and water even though they tell you it is an NHL rule? I too was shocked….the vendors there seem to not have ever heard of such foolishness. I just always believed the vendors when they said that – but I looked it up today and lo and behold can find nothing from the NHL mandating that arenas remove bottle caps. Stupid ASG…one more annoying thing to inconvenience fans. Anyway, not only does Tampa Bay put a great product on the ice, they really seem to care about the fans and trying to pack that arena. From ticket prices, to specials, to give-aways, fan events…I had a great time even though I hate the Bolts. ASG Sucks.

Smoothie – Fully agree on the 30 teams being TOO MUCH. The southeast teams not including Washington, but throwing in Nashville, cuz it’s more S.E. than D.C. were all crapshoots. That’s not to say it can’t work, especially here in the potentially best market south of the Mason Dixon (again save D.C.) and east of the Mississippi, but again uncalculated, wanton expansion and voila, here we sit. This is why I lump the NHL in with Time Warner, and the F.A.S.,LLC. so far as where culpability of this abysmal failure of a franchise is concerned. You gotta work hard to make things work and I DOUBLE DOG DARE ANYONE to show me out of the aforementioned groups who actually has so far as this team goes.
I truly believe the southeast can support professional hockey in at least the towns with NHL teams in them already, BUUUT not the NHL with perennial mediocre products I’m talking ECHL, AHL. We are a sure shot for mior league success NOT NHL success. Northern transplants are the bread and butter, but they love the teams from their real hometowns, Detroit, New Jersey, NYR, Chicago, etc. And so the only reason they come outside of when those sorts of teams are in town is usually if they LOOOVE hockey so much that they’ll adopt the Thrashers when they’re not playing their childhood teams. The Thrashers have to be pretty damned good on a consisten basis to bring in those types all of the time, but that’s NOT the case with a good minor league team. Transplants tend not to have the same kind of allegiances where that’s concerned hence minor league hockey being a sure shot in Atlanta and this has been true for 20 years at least.
I could really elaborate on how the NHL cheapened it’s product with 30 teams. I can admittedly say I wish towns like Quebec City and Wwinnipeg have the right demographics and I wish they could have made it work back in the day. I can admit now and not ever, even if I had billions of dough to blow would I own a team in about 1/3 or better of their present locations (Atlanta included). Remember by my count only about 1/3 of the league is even in truly traditional markets, the rest were co-opted as far back as the original six (ie, NYR) and even still laregly aren’t hotbeds for hockey regardless of snowy winters or not. It’s a risky business in the big leagues and demands love and an ATM for a colon.

I’ll drink to that Uncle! Wpg has waited far too long for the return of the jets. GB put NO effort in keeping them in wpg. GB was quoted as saying we will do everything we can to keep the NHL in wpg… 5 days later they were sold to clowns in PHX. The deal is done. The Buff signing is no coincidence… the guy just elevated his NHL status to god-like here in the peg. TNSE saw him as quality player and prime marketing asset for jets fans….it’s a cold icy and sunny afternoon in wpg and the jets are about to land.

No, but seriously… I like Canada. I really do. But still, it’s unfair to the true fans here who have put up with garbage ownership for years, waiting for a time when the arena would be filled with fans because the team was winning consistently to have it be moved. If we get committed ownership with deep pockets, we WILL become a successful team. I still don’t see the team moving, though it is becoming a very real possibility.
Now, as for the Winnipeg fans out there… I’d really be quite happy if Winnipeg, Quebec City, etc. got a new NHL franchise… through expansion. It would be great for all of us, as you would get a team, and the rest of the league would not only get to keep theirs, but would also get money from the costly expansion fee. It would be nice to see you get a team, but just NOT OURS.

Yeah P&M, the NHL is DYING to go back to Winnipeg – despite what you may “remember” of the Jets, the facts are they never were a top drawing team and averaged about 13.5 K. The final season – they were under 12K …and thats with Khabibulin, Tkachuk, Selanne, Zhamnov, Janney, Doan, Teverdosky, Drake and Olczyk on the roster. This during a time in the league where 16 of the 21 teams make the playoffs. Winnipeg’s playoff attendance was atrocious. You have a city with a shrinking populace. We are a top 10 market. Makes so much more sense from a BUSINESS perspective to grow your product in new markets. If done right, it will succeed here. No city would support these moronic owners.

Sure the NHL and the players really want a team in Winnipeg. “That’s The Ticket”
The why are players specifically putting no trade clauses in their contracts so if the Thrashers end up in Winnipeg they will not go there…
And this is from the Canadian Hot Stove Show
Via Birdwatcher’s Anonymous:
Tonight’s “Hot Stove” segment on Hockey Night in Canada (CBC) discussed the Thrashers ownership situation as well as possible trades for Zach Bogosian. Pierre LeBrun (ESPN) and Ron Maclean (CBC) did most of the talking: both are major media figures with decent credibility. HNIC is the top rated tv show in Canada and given the large Canadian audience was surprisingly negative towards Winnipeg as a possible new location for the team: Glen Healy (CBC) went so far as to say that Winnipeg was such an undesirable destination for players around the league that they were rushing to have Atlanta added to their “no movement” contract clauses so they wouldn’t wind up in WPG.

Glovesave29, I’ve never been much of a Sheldon Souray fan. But, he’d probably make our team better. I think the time to make a move to salvage this season has long since passed. At this point, a move to get a player should be one with years left on the contract or an RFA. This season’s over, barring a miracle. Sure, we could go 17-5 the rest of the way. And space aliens could invade Planet Earth and enslave us all.

I’m a big boy and can take any flak you may wish to deal. That said, I’ve not insulted Atlanta one iota, nor the US. I’ve family an friends there, and believe it or not, have actually visited your city many years ago and came away quite impressed. The only issue I have with this blog is one article posted here a few months ago that made light of the city that I live in – as far as being a viable future NHL destination. Not only was your Ice Man quite pompous in that article, it also turns out that he was truly blind to the current state of your franchise. FYI, that the Thrashers may be moving has been well known for a few years now amongst some of us.
I wish zero ill will to current fans there and frankly would prefer if the Coyotes were to eventually move north rather than the Thrashers. If it winds up being the Thrashers though, such is life. Your complaint should not be against Canadians for taking your franchise as we’ll be paying full value for the team. The fault should lie fully with the sellers, not the buyer. So anyway, good luck to you.

Greetings from the Great White North. I am sorry to miss Friday’s game (will still be skiing), but will be at plenty down the stretch cheering for players and booing owners. Watching the Heritage Classic from this side of the border allowed me to see that pinhead xenophobe Don Cherry spew his opinion that ATL to Winnipeg was a “done deal”, so look for the Canatrolling to only pick up steam.
For perspective, however, go to the Winnipeg Free Press page devoted to Jets rumors and you’ll see numerous such predictions and indications for Phoenix’s iminent relocation over the past two years. Keep the faith, Blueland! Hockey is not moving away soon, and our right to a team is worth fighting for! Even a maddening team is better than no team at all!

Wish you the best of luck Mike, take care of yourself.
I have a gut feeling, and it could be just because I want it so badly to be true, that Thrashy will be in Atl next season. I really do think so. Based on everything I have read (from both sides of the coin) I don’t see it happening this year. Not to say it won’t ever happen, but not this next year. We as fans are doing pretty much everything we can to prevent this and doing a pretty damn good job I would say. If it does happen it isn’t because of us and it isn’t because of the Canadian fans, as riling as some of them can be. It has been mashed over to a pulp as to why it would/could/should/shouldn’t/wouldn’t happen and it all points (with pronounced middle fingers) to the League and A$$G.
People who have never visited Atl or even GA have a disparate misconception of what the city is like – dirty, run down, rampant crime, civic unrest, uneducated, poor, redneck, and of course, no hockey fans. And of course they are wrong. Point is, Atl is a fantastic city and Hockey needs to be there. A good owner – hell – a decent owner, could turn this around in a single off season, guaranteed and make a freaking killing. Fact: the players like it here. Just look at Pevs, a northern boy who fell in love with the “Dirty South” as many northerners call it. They have a top-notch facility, die hard fans and way better weather to boot, eh. Not to say Canada isn’t awesome, I love it up there, but I will take an Atl winter any day over the nip up north.
I see no reason why Winnipeg shouldn’t have a pro team, same as I see no reason why Atl shouldn’t have one. You gotta think that Bettman is pulling his remaining hair out at the possibility that he might lose 5.5 million person market that has proven to support any well managed sport that calls Atl home. I emphasize ‘well managed’ because that is what it is really coming down to and we all know it, sh!t, the whole hockey world knows it. A$$G has been ‘outed’, but the question is; does anybody have the balls to do anything about it? I want answers and solutions. I want to KNOW definitively, right now so I don’t keep getting p!ssed about guessing, if it will happen. Is there already a deal? If so, just f-ing tell me and don’t string your fans along. Yeah yeah, if you tell us you are going to move the team we won’t show up is your thought GB. Maybe. Or perhaps you misjudged the fans and they will clamor to see every last minute of in person hockey that they may ever see in Atl. Don’t be a wuss, grow a sack and do you job – which at this point is to try and NOT move a beloved hockey team out of a potentially very prosperous market.

Well, it isn’t over in the race for seventh and eighth in the Eastern Conference because there isn’t a single team on this list that is playing its best hockey right now in this crucial stage of the season except for the Devils and Islanders. And, there is no way that kind of strong play can continue over the next 20-plus games. A three-game win streak before the trade deadline would be essential to have a realistic shot, however, since Buffalo, the Panthers and the Leafs all are chasing rather than leading, and Atlanta has had success against two of the three. The time is now!

Did anybody watch the presser last night of Bettman speaking after the Heritage Classic? I watched and it and Bettman was really pissed off at this question and walked off the stage after it. Who else saw it? I don’t know how to take his reaction, he was so visibly pissed off at it (he seemed to get even more pissed after the reporter asked a follow up, not listed below that was something like “in reference to what Gearon said”, here’s the question and answer:
Q. A question about Atlanta, lots of talk about Winnipeg on CBC tonight, everywhere. What’s your take?
COMMISSIONER BETTMAN: I don’t think there’s any new news about Atlanta. I know there was an article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, but I hate speculation. I hate the stories, because it raises people’s expectations when they shouldn’t be.
If and whenever we have something to announce I promise you I’ll announce it. But let’s keep our eye on the ball. We just had a great event. And I don’t know what the CBC said. But if that’s what they were spending attention on during this game, I think they’ve taken their eye off the puck.

Full Disclosure. Winnipeg Resident Post.
Glenn Healy from HNIC has little to no credibility. He knows nothing of Winnipeg except from what he remembers from 15 – 20 years ago. Ron Mclean and Don Cherry are the only ones that have ANY credibility regarding the NHL and how canadians perceive them. The vast majority of the current players in the NHL also have no idea just how much has changed in Winnipeg. If you want a real perspective ask former players throughout the NHL about what it was like playing in front of Winnipeg fans.
To my fellow Winnipeg posters on this forum. Taking joy in another teams misfortunes in the hopes of having a team back in Winnipeg is weak at best. It’s seems that Atlanta is filled with very knowledgeable hockey fans which is WAY MORE than can be said about those “fans” in Phoenix.
I don’t know how the ownership thing will play out for Thrasher fans but filling the arena for every remaining game is a very positive step to show the league and your owners that Atlanta fans deserve a team. I point again at the Coyotes whose team may still be in jeopardy from staying and all their fans do is stay away in droves.
Keep up the fight Thrasher fans, it isn’t over until it’s over. Winnipeg will get a team one day and when the Thrashers come to Winnipeg and play the Jets. I’ll be there.

Allan R,
why would a negative fan blog be of interest to me? The reason the NHL should consider Winnipeg as an NHL destination is because they’ll have the 20th richest person in the world as a part owner. The NHL wish to continue doing business with that man’s companies, unless you’ve never heard of TSN and Sportsnet – who are NHL broadcast partners that is, you should understand that concept. It matters not what some fan blog thinks of Winnipeg, but it does matter when a current NHL broadcast partner has his money backing them.
