Thrashers take on Coyotes as fans deal with ‘The Morning After’

The collective moaning and groaning heard throughout town this morning was the sound of Thrashers fans rolling out of bed still feeling the effects of being kicked in the gut yesterday. It’s the feeling you might experience after a long night of consuming hot wings and washing it all down with vast quantities of adult beverages…only without the benefit of actually enjoying the wings and drinks the night before.

Yes…it’s the morning after in Thrasherville.

In case you were away from your internet-fed computer or not tuned in to AM sports talk radio, here is the story in a nutshell:

Atlanta Spirit co-owner Michael Gearon let it be know via the AJC that there was a “sense of urgency” to find additional investor or an outright buyer for the Thrashers who would be willing to keep the team in Atlanta. He stated that they were faced with that as a serious alternative if no one steps forward and indicated that it would be tough to stomach any more $20 million losses.

Later in the afternoon, he then went on 680 AM The Fan with John Kincade and indicated his statement was simply meant to inform would-be local investors that they were open to offers. Gearon stated that he has no plans to dispose of HIS part of the franchise and that he loves both the Hawks and the Thrashers. He is only speaking out at this time, he insists, because he really and for-truly wants anyone in these parts looking to buy the Thrashers to have first crack at the deal.

He then went on about how the Belkin buyout took longer than expected because of their law firm…and then proceeded to discuss at length just how well he thought the Hawks were doing.

I guess the basketball team’s recent string of successful seasons is just a little more fun to talk about for Gearon than what he and his cohorts have allowed the Thrashers to become during their reign as owners.

…shrugs…

Why did Michael Gearon deliver this bit of information and not, say, Bruce Levenson? I dunno…maybe he was too busy working on his opening dialogue in preparation for an upcoming town hall meeting with season ticket holders.

Then again, maybe flaming monkeys will fly out of my…

…ahem…

Anyway…Unfortunately, this is just another cross we in Thrasherville will have to bear until any such person or persons actually step forward. So, you may continue to discuss it if you may, or move on to…

ACTUAL REAL LIFE HOCKEY TO DISCUSS!

Thank gawd that we actually have some honest and for-goodness Thrashers hockey to discuss today. While we are dealing with the aftereffects of the “M” bomb being dropped on Thrasherville by Mr. Gearon, the Thrashers find themselves in Arizona where they’ll do battle with the Phoenix Coyotes tonight.

And just like the “sense of urgency” Gearon commented on in regards to finding new partners or owners, there is also a deep sense of urgency to actually win some games if this team is to continue to make a run at the postseason. Doing so would actually go a long way in helping place some more butts in the blue seats of Philips Arena.

Just sayin’, Mr. Gearon…

The Yotes will provide a tough test for Atlanta as they currently sit atop the Pacific Division with a record of 30-19-9 and are coming off a 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals Monday night. They’ve won five straight games and are 13-6-2 since New Years.

They are led in scoring by Keith Yandle with 9 goals and 38 assists for 47 points and Ray Whitney with 11 goals and 33 assists for 44 points. Lead Phoenix in goals scored is Scottie Upshall who has potted 16 to go with 11 helpers.

In goal for the Coyotes is Ilya Bryzgalov who has played to a record of 24-14-6 with a .918 SV% and 2.56 GAA. He has 5 shutouts so far this season. He’s currently on a personal five-game winning streak in which he’s allowed only six goals and dropped two goose eggs on the scoreboard. During the streak, he’s stopped 127 of 133 shots, (.955 SV%).

Last night we got some help from New Jersey and Philadelphia as they defeated Carolina and Florida respectively. The same is true as Toronto knocked off Buffalo in regulation as well. However, that brings win allowed the Leafs to leapfrog over the Panthers into eleventh place and pulled them to within four points of the Thrashers, who now reside in tenth.

Game is at 9:00 our time…I’ll have Trixie put on a few extra pots of coffee in the morning as it’ll be pushing midnight once the festivities in the desert are over. And I think I may sample a few wings and adult beverages while viewing it.

What the heck, the pain in my gut tomorrow morning won’t be any worse then the one I woke up with today.

Hate to see Rich leave, He liked it in Atlanta and always had good things to say. Saw on the Boston NHL site, both Wheeler & Stuart, did not come off with the famous quote, “It is what it is”.
They both sounded like they were ready to come here and try to win. They both, esp Wheeler, spoke of being in the playoff hunt. Would rather seen Bergfous go before Peverley.
Wish smoothie could have been sent to winnipeg for a few rolls of toilet paper, Good one for us !

Yup, Burke has done some seriously good work and I reckon he’s not done just yet. He may use one of those 1st rounders to trade up at the draft as well if there’s someone he has his eye on.

LAC – someone’s gotta be here and predict the trades for Duds, and keep your ego in check! ;) At least you’re an actual fan of the team as opposed to SOB so bygones. Then again, you probably still want to fight me but who cares? I’m just happy we got 2 assets for an undrafted, journeyman waiver pick-up. We can thank both DWad and Dudley I spoz.

Smoothie, lol, you gotta admit that LAC’s TP comment was kind of funny, ha! I will miss Pevs but the trade is a good one for us and adds a bit of bulk on the blue line. Wheeler could turn into one hell of a player and Boris wasn’t going to suit up for Thrashy again anyway. Plus, as a stand up guy, I wish Pevs the best of luck to chase himself a cup – can’t stand the thought of the Flyers winning it all…..

Thanks, Rich…and good luck. He went from a “who is this guy and he better not try to take Dan Snyder’s #37″ to a real fan favorite.

Valabik – basically going from Chicago to Providence. Ol cement shoes is not going to sniff the NHL.

Hurricanes deal d-man Ian White, the 3rd time he has been traded in the past year, to San Jose. No word on whom the Canes get in return. In a separate deal, the Canes acquired d-man Derek Joslin from the Sharks for future considerations.

Rutherford is up to something because he has other seven UFAs Cole, Samsonov, Larose, Jokinen, Dwyer, Harrison and Pitkanen and likely will try to leverage some of them during the next week for some younger guys.

If somebody would be kind enough to summarize what Duds and Wheeler say I would very much appreciate it.

***I honestly don’t see a huge difference in talent between the Thrashers and Flyers (#1 in the East)

Flyers just have belief in their system and will do anything to grind out a win.***

Huh? Do what? This must be a typo? Flyers are a real franchise, completely different team

Apparently, Wheeler was very excited at the prospect of having a bigger role on a team still with a shot at the playoffs. Better start than Bergfors so far! ;)

Let me take that back, apparently Wheeler “didn’t sound really happy” but he was *excited* for the oppty. But in contrast to Bergy, it didn’t sound as though “his dog had just died.”

glove – I would think he’d be ecstatic at the chance to play legit top-line minutes under his former coach who probably knows him like a son. Look what Rammer has done for Thorbs, Stewart and guys of that ilk. If Wheeler is motivated, Rammer can get a lot more out of him.

He damn well better be excited, he is a very young multi-millionaire playing a game for a living while a lot of us have advanced degrees and are still looking for jobs in this crap market, jobs that will pay about 8% of what he makes! No b!tching allowed!

Thanks for the memories and for being a class act, Pevs.

I do like the fact that we got another big body and a young one at that. Always thought Mark Stuart was a solid D man and a guy that ain’t afraid to hit. Should help the D.

Totally agree Zoomo, Stuart is a gem of a find. I think he will turn into one heck of a solid D man and should be good for a long time. Great move by D.

I’m with Stroz, here. What comes up, must come down, and our hearts have been raised up, then dragged through the mud, ever since these morons bought the team.

What’s going to come later tonight or tomorrow?

Red Light, can you clarify something for me? Did Brian Burke just get back the 2011 1st round and conditional 2nd round pick that he gave up to get Kessel? If so, what a frekkin’ coup by Burke!! That’s probably a lottery draft pick, and high-end 2nd rounder!! Or, was the 1st rounder … that which traditionally belonged to Boston? Meaning? Well, let’s just say the Bruins win their 1st round series, and that means pick # 23 to # 26 in the Draft? Let’s just say the Bruins reach the CF, is that what “kicks in” the conditional 2nd rounder? And is THAAAAT the pick the Maple Leafs originally held, but traded to Boston for Kessell? Or, again, is that pick # 53 to # 56, that would traditionally belong to Boston, assuming the Bruins win a round of playoffs? Actually, if the Bruins went to the CF, then we’re talking about a 2nd rounder at # 57 or # 58.
