Things haven’t exactly been hunky-dory in Thrasherville during the month of January.
A 3-4-3 record and winners of just one regular season game since New Years had the team clinging desperately to their eighth place position in the Eastern Conference. Key players have been bitten by the injury bug to the point that a M.A.S.H. unit could have been stationed outside of the practice facility at the Duluth Ice Forum.
Not Slater, No Kane, No Mason and most recently, No Toby. All tending to various ailments.
Players like Dustin Byfuglien and Alex Burmistrov have been mired in scoring slumps…Big Buff being held goalless since his overtime game winner in Montreal on the second of January while the rookie hasn’t dented the score sheet since assisting on Byfuglien’s goal during a 3-1 loss in New Jersey on New Years Eve.
And then there’s Ondrej Pavelec…who at times could have sued his teammates for non-support…finally fell to “human” status in the past few weeks, going 3-4-3 with a .898 SV% going into Wednesday’s game against the Washington Capitals.
There were multiple third period leads lost as well a couple blowout defeats that had many fans faces displaying that all-too familiar “Gloom, despair and agony on me…deep dark depression, excessive misery” look.

Rich Peverley congratulates Ondrej Pavelec after the 1-0 win over the Washington Capitals Wednesday night. The victory was only the second in regulation time for the Thrashers since New Years and came just when they really needed one (AP Photo/John Bazemore)
Adding to the dark clouds hovering around Philips Arena was this whole mess surrounding the owner’s admission of having lied to us for six years about looking to sell the team. This last little revelation coming via “A.S., LLC Lawsuit 2011”…the latest in a string of seemingly endless legal battles The Great Octocluster has sought to venture into.
Nope…it was not a good month at all.
So, with all this swirling about, the All Star break staring us in the face and the Carolina Hurricanes ridding up our butts, if there was ever a time that the Thrashers really, really…I mean REALLY needed a regulation win, this was it my friends.
Thankfully, they got just that.
Atlanta limps into All Star weekend still sitting in a playoff position thanks to 36 save shutout by Pavelec and one, single, solitary goal by Nik Antropov. For Opie, it was the third goose egg he’s laid upon the scoreboard and the fifth of his NHL career. Antropov’s goal, which came just in the …ahem…”Nik” of time, was scored halfway through the second period and was set up by Fredrik Modin. The secondary assist went to defenseman Ron Hainsey.
That’s right, Antropov, Modin and Hainsey…three of the fastest skaters on the roster teaming up for the only score of the game.
The win gives Atlanta a record of 24-19-9 heading into the break and the 57 points keeps them one point ahead of the Canes, who were in the process of knocking off the New York Islanders 4-2. Seventh place Montreal is two ahead of the Thrashers with 59 points.
Both the Hurricanes and the Habs have played two fewer games, however.
Atlanta also concluded their six game series with division foes Washington with the 1-0 win. They’ll finish with a 4-1-1 record against the three-time Southeast Division champs, including a 3-0-0 record at Philips Arena. The last two home games were shutouts victories by the Thrashers.
One last bit of good news coming from this win…Atlanta’s penalty kill unit continued to shows some signs of improvement. In killing off three Caps’ power plays, Atlanta has successfully worked their way though 12 of the last 14 PK situation over the course of the last five games since allowing 4 power play goals to the Dallas Stars.
There is a lot of work this team has facing it after they return to action next week…and there’s a lot of work the front office needs to do to help them as they continue to battle for a playoffs birth this spring. But these two points earned tonight not only go long way towards that goal, it also ends a very rough month of January on a winning note.
The team needed that…and so did we.

Speaking of the AJC article regarding the octocluster’s new lawsuit and that they lied to us for 6 years about wanting to sell the team – Last weekend Puckhead commented that the fan club had sent out an email telling the members not to believe everything they read in the story and indicated new information would be forthcoming.
So, was there any new news brought forward by those who run the fan club? I’m just curious.

Game was not much different from a few the past couple of weeks. Biggest difference was Pavelec standing on his head. Pavelec plays great equals win…Pavelec plays good…probably lose. Buff has got to be banged up. Bogosian played a great game…welcome back, Zack.
The biggest change I see in the team from winning early to lately is shots on goal. Early on, everyone was putting everything on net. Now they seem to be just missing. They do great work and set up a good shot, then miss the goal. Definitely the biggest change in Buff is missing the net with the big blasts from the point. If the point of Ramsay’s offense is to generate shots and rebounds, they have GOT to HIT THE NET. Most goals are off scrambles, but if you shoot it wide, no rebound, no goal.
Ondrej…get some rest, the whole team will be on your back for the last 30 games!

JB- go to TSN Hockey webpage. Dreager is one of their sportswriters.
Tom- Dudley said when he traded he would not be the guy trying to get something for nothing, so I imagine he will be trading some quality peeps out of Atl. Both Hainsey and Antro have some of the larger contracts of the Thrash. Antro has another year? Hainsey as well? Someone correct me on that.
So you move those guys for some youth and some skill.
Maybe Iginla, but he really is older than our team profile would seem to predicate.

Speaking of Trades I would like a package deal – on the trading block are the ASG and The “Negative Nancy” posters in this blog. Will take a bag of pucks for both. Maybe Lou and the Devils can work out another deal – I’m sure they have virgin pucks that have never seen net this season up in Jersey…

Nice to see Bogosian respond so well as that was easily the best defensive game I’ve seen him play in quite some time. Positionally he seemed much better and he was more decisive with the puck. Perhaps the time observing really helped him see where he needs to go with the puck for the high percentage play even with very little time when under duress. Let’s hope he turns the corner as his play will be key down the stretch if this team is going to tighten up enough to stay in the playoff thick of things. And yes, Pavelec was simply brilliant again.
As for the trade rumors, perhaps we are floating our two $4M men because we are looking to swap $4M men for another team’s $4M men (e.g. Ales Hemsky or Dustin Penner). Although I’m not sure why anyone other than Toronto might want Antropov as he must be seen as a huge risk after the hip surgery. Hainsey & our #1 to EDM for Penner and Antro & Kulda to TOR for Versteeg? A man can dream can he not?

Zoomo-agreed on Hainsey, Ron his found his spot in the lineup. I think losing Hainsey or Antropv would be a loss for the team, unless what’s coming back is a major upgrade.
Bogo seems to have responded to his time off. Not a bad thing for a player get get some cat-bird (press box) time to alter their presective. Good for him.
I still don’t think there’s going to be alotta trades this season. Too many teams are close to playoff spots, they are not going to cash it in unless they get a deal that blows them away.

Due to the recent disclosure of the Atlanta Spirits repeated lies to season ticket holders, I was wondering if anyone out there (lawyers in particular) sees grounds for a class action lawsuit. If so, I am sure there are plenty of plaintiffs on this blog ready to join the cause–myself included. ASG seems to enjoy lawsuits anyway. I say we indulge them in another.

WBF – I agree, I’m not sure I’d like to see Hainsey go. He has really stepped up this year and he has responded to the challenge(s) issued by Coach Ramsay. I don’t find myself bemoaning his limp-wristed clearing attempts much at all this season and he has only 1 over-the-glass delay of game penalty I think. But in a trade scenario, you’ve got to give to get and we must be thankful that he’s elevated his value enough to justify at least 3/4 of his huge yearly salary.
If nothing else, I hope Duds decides to throw a 4th or 5th rounder (the one for Eager from San Jose) at Jarkko Ruutu. I’ve hated his guts, but other than a few questionable hits, he’s not nearly the jerk that Neil or Avery or Cookie is. He’s a big, mobile guy, good at both ends (check out his career +/-) and he’s got some decent hands for a big fella. I would love to have the gritty Finn to tangle with the other Ruutu, Jokinen, Staal et al in Carolina as the remaining 4 games with them may determine the 8th seed.

Semin just re-upped for $6.7 M and one more year in Washington. Probably a good compromise for both sides to give them more time.
Still, won’t this limit their options again in FA as they have so much money tied up in Ovy, Green, Backstrom, Semin, Schultz, Laich and Poti?

You may not agree, but I don’t see upgrades for Hainsey and Antropov available by trade with equal salaries. I believe you’d have to keep similar salaries so as not to drop below the cap minimum. I like the way Ron has been playing and Antropov seems to have his game back. I give the guy credit for not complaining and obviously playing hurt. Ramsay and Dudley must have felt that Antro at 80 percent was better than a “depth” guy at 100 percent. Personally, I’m waiting for Slater’s energy to return.

Good call on both Hainsey and the elder Ruutu. I’m not in favor of a 20-game rental, particularly another 35-year-old, although his edginess and defensive responsibility couldn’t hurt. Still, what need is he filling, as he is not a top-6 forward?
Semin’s cap hit won’t do anything to limit McPhee this season, but he still will have to clear more space for a key deal. Caps have $13.5 million in space next season and only Laich is a key $2 million-plus UFA to re-sign. He’ll probably let Hannan and Knuble walk and go with younger players, of which they seem to have an endless supply.
As much as I hate to admit it, World Be Free could be exactly right in terms of players available via trade. Only five of the 30 teams have little realistic hope of making the playoffs. Calgary has crept back in it going 6-1-3 in their last 10.
Atlanta’s recent play, nine points in 10 games, has allowed two, if not three teams back in the Eastern race, but the good thing is that they also have the most flexibility in terms of cap space if they are allowed to spend any of it.

How about false advertising?
If a company makes false claims, like “our tacos are beef,” then that company is required to sell beef tacos. The ASG claimed to be selling tickets to see a NHL hockey team, but what we got was 17% NHL and the rest filler and by-product.

I would love to see a class action lawsuit by STHs against ASG.
Consumers purchase a product based on information provided by the seller. When the seller blatantly lies about the product they are selling, the purchaser may seek damages.
Over the years, there have been several attempts by fans to sue owners, and I do not believe any of them have been successful. However, this case may exceed others in that ASG’s remarks were not simply marketing hype, but instead, outright lies with the intent to defraud purchasers.
When they acquired the Thrashers, the Hawks and Philips Arena operating rights, ASG promoted that their intent was to build championship teams. However, court documents now show that their intent from the beginning was to use the Thrashers as equity so they could essential get the Hawks for nothing. STHs purchased tickets to invest in the future of NHL hockey in Atlanta. ASG used their money in a scheme to increase their equity in the Hawks.
Sue the B*st*rds! Yeah, a winning verdict is not likely, but keeping it in court for years may have the same effect as the Belkin lawsuit and help prevent these blood suckers from selling our team to some Canadian.

Red Light – if nothing else, Ruutu >>>> Modin and he could protect Burmi with Antro on the RW. Modin, aside from the assist play last nite, was / is horrible along the half-wall. Ruutu, and I could be wrong, seems to have better change of direction and he always seems to be flying around our net and swarming our D-men on the F/C. I’m sick of Modin and if I see him on the PK one more time, I’m going to scream. Wait, I already scream when that happens!
Hainsey, Modin (just to move bodies and even up the cap hits), a prospect like Zubarev and our 3rd round pick for Michalek, Ruutu and perhaps a prospect to even things out. Almost an even swap in terms of dollars. Hainsey provides leadership on their blueline for young players like Karlsson, Lee etc and MM & Ruutu provide the grit and tenacity we need to re-invigorate our stalled forecheck. Our SOG avg has plummetted to a paltry 28.8 during January and 29.2 over the last 16 games. In November, we were getting over 33.4 SOG per game. We don’t so much need scorers as we do bodies who can play the game the way Ramsay wants it played. Move Kane and Antro to the off-wings and go with this:
Ladd – Little – Bergy \ Antro
Michalek – Pevs – Kaner
Ruutu – Burmy \ Corms – Antro \ Stewy
Boults \ Dawes – Slater \ Thor – Thor \ Stewy
Perhaps hang the carrot of Bergfors and Antropov to Edm and see if you can get Hemsky? Then you’ve got a legit top-line RW and Stewy can play 3rd line mins where he probably belongs. Don’t think Edm would want Antro necessarily but if Hemsky is damaged goods, so is Antro. Tit for tat on that one, but by giving up Bergy, we don’t have to give up a pick, just a couple of prospects perhaps?

Makes no sense to move either Antropov or Hainsey, personnel wise. Antro is finally getting healthy, you could see his mobility is freeing up and he’s skating better, he’s an asset to make a playoff run with. Hainsey’s playing great this year and is flourishing in coach’s system. Only way they’re moving those guys is for financial reasons to make space under the self imposed cap as they’re both due a chunk next season. I suppose moving Hainsey allows you self imposed cap dollars to sign Buf to an extension. And moving Antropov allows you self imposed cap dollars to sign Ladd to an extension. But you better bring in replacements now to make a run with. If we get a top 6 forward and a top 4 dman in at the deadline, then ok, but I won’t like it if they’re just rentals. We need new owners so badly.

remove Antro and Hainsey’s contracts.
That leaves their $ to extend Buf and Ladd
replace Antro and Hainsey with rentals for the playoff run (with players that make similar $)
replace Antro and Hainsey with youngsters for next year going forward
Only reason I see moving them is to clear the self imposed cap space to afford the extensions to Ladd and Buf.

Seems like we all agree that Ron Hainey is playing his best hockey since becoming a Thrasher. I still say he’s the most overpaid 6th defenseman in the league, but he sure has found his niche.
Jarko Ruutu? Boy do I dislike playoff rentals. But this guy might be able to help us because he has a controlled edge. It will take more than a 5th rounder to get him though. Ottawa has thrown in tohe towel on the season, but Sens management is under the illusion they can retool in 1 season. Trading for Ottawa’s available players will come at a premium.

This team is averaging a mere 2.05 goals scored over the last 17 games on roughly 29.75 shots on goal, for a shooting percentage of 6.9. Yes, only 6.9%!!!!! If you don’t think we need to add some scoring, then I don’t know what to say. Our defense is just barely good enough (with Enstrom) to make the playoffs unless the Bogosian of spring 2009 suddenly appears.
So scoring between 2.0 and 2.25 goals per game is gonna make it real hard to win 17/18 of the final 30 without adding something. Even if the shooting percentage normalizes back to the 9% realm, that is still borderline for making the playoffs unless Pavelectric somehow imitates his November performance for 2 months (unlikely indeed). So yes, we may have to part with Hainsey and / or Antropov, but the good news is that we’d have to take on that much salary to stay above the floor as RL astutely points out.

In the class action lawsuit to be filed by STHs, a plethora of emails from Bruce Levenson, Michael Gearon Jr., and Don Waddell will be used as prima facie evidence that the ASG has consistently lied to the STH’s to induce continued sales. This civil tort is commonly referred to as FRAUD.
At the end of the lawsuit, the STHs inform the ASG owners that they will just have to DEAL WITH IT.

Agreed, Byfuglien and Ladd are much more valuable to this team for the next 4-5 years at $10 M then Hainsey + Antro at $8.5 M for the next 2 years. Problem is, with the doubt surrouding the next CBA when the current one expires in 2012, how many agents will be gung-ho on doing a deal longer than 1-3 years, if not more than 1 year?

1. Bergfors-he might be out young player-tradable commodity that will attract interest between now and the end of February. I happen to be a fan so I am not keen on trading Bergie.
2. A current roster player-addition through subtraction is a dicey thing at best. Not sure if doing this is going to put us that much further ahead.
3. Comes down to our #1 this year; are we willing to trade our #1, knowing we have already traded our #2? A number one should get us a 24-26ish forward with at least 2 year years remaining on his current contract that can contribute.

Boston gets their depth C, who can also play RW with Krejci, and we get our young, viable RW with an actual set of hands so Stewart goes to the 3rd line where he belongs. j nots, nice math skills…doesn’t change the fact this is still the best team in years and, for the most part, very enjoyable to watch. My definition of a loser is someone who bitches and moans about how life isn’t fair…like you! No one enjoys losing, but the name of this game is making the playoffs, not winning every game. Right now we are in a playoff spot. What’s so bad about that? The next 30 games will be exciting. You still haven’t said what you hope to accomplish with a class action suit. You want your money back from all those years as a season ticket holder? Going out on a limb and guessing you haven’t been to 10 games in total. You want them to refund your Center Ice Package?
