Andrew Ladd is ‘true captain’ for this Thrashers team

On November 18 the Atlanta Thrashers found themselves with a record of 7-9-3. They had just come off a very disappointing 2-1 loss to the Florida Panthers the night before, had lost three straight and six of the last seven games played. Atlanta was also looking at upcoming games against such teams as the Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadians and Boston Bruins, among others.

Times were tough and the waters ahead looked rough. Needless to say, there was much grumbling, griping, wailing and gnashing of teeth going on throughout Thrasherville at that time.

But that morning, the Thrashers also named Andrew Ladd as their team captain.

The Thrashers are 11-2-2 after naming Andrew Ladd team captain. But he's quick topoint out that has little to do with the recent run of success...rather it's the coaching staff and the team's chemistry (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

The next night the Thrashers went out and beat the division leading Caps 5-0, beginning the current 11-2-2 run they are currently on. It’s a run that had landed them, even if for just one day, atop the Southeast Division following Saturday night’s 7-1 slap down of the New Jersey Devils.

Let’s see…the Thrashers made Ladd the captain then they go off on a month-long tear. So, is this all just coincidence?

“It might be a bit of a coincidence…I don’t think it was me getting the ‘C’”, Ladd told me prior to the games against the Devils. But he then added with a wry grin, “But I’ll take the credit if you want to give it to me”.

In all seriousness, Ladd is quick to point to the men behind the bench as the main reason this team is experienced what many fans are calling the best stretch of hockey Thrasherville has ever experienced.

“Everyone starting here was brand new to the systems, coaches and players, and it took a little time to get everyone on the same page. But right about that time [when he was named captain] it started to click and it’s really started to come together since”.

“They’ve been good [with the team]. We’ve got a young group of guys and still learning a lot of little things it takes to be successful in this league. Rammer’s a patient guy. He takes his time and makes sure everyone understands what their job is and what they need to do on the ice.”

“It’s definitely been working well this year”.

Ladd, the fourth overall pick in 2004 by the Carolina Hurricanes, began his NHL career after the lockout playing for a ‘Canes that won the Stanley Cup…a team captained by Ron Brind’Amour. When I asked if that type of leadership experienced then is something he can draw upon now, Ladd quickly replied, “Yeah, definitely. I think being so young your eyes are really wide open and you look to some of the older guys to see how they hold themselves and prepare to games.”

“I don’t think there is anyone who prepared for games better and worked as hard as Rod did, so he was a big influence on me and what I do now”.

In his short time as team captain here, Ladd has already gained a great deal of the same respect from his teammates. Winning certainly has a lot to do with it, of course. But one can’t help but get the feeling that the guys in the locker room honestly feel that the right man was tapped for the job.

“He’s just a great person to be around”, Anthony Stewart said of Ladd. “He’s blends in with any group of guys or any one guy and I think that speaks a lot to his character”.

It may seem like the recent run of success has been as easy as a stoll through the park for Ladd, Johnny Oduya and the rest of the Thrashers. But the team is working hard for one another and it's been paying off the captain says. Here, the two celebrate one of Oduya's two goals against the Islanders (AP Photo/Kathy Kmonicek)

Continuing, Stewey added, “He’s a great guy. I played World Juniors with him and we won the gold medal there for Canada. We hang out together away from the rink.”

“He’s a true captain”.

To Stewart’s point about hanging out with each other away from the arena, Ladd feels this kind of comradery has played a big role in what this team has accomplished of late. Whether it’s on the practice ice, in the locker room or when they head out on the road, this group of players enjoy spending time together…and that can’t help but add to the team’s on-ice success.

“Everyone’s positive and upbeat and wants everyone to do good”, Ladd responded when asked about this team’s chemistry. “Everyone’s pretty close, fairly close in age”.

Then with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek he joked, “OK, we got a couple of old guys”.

“But we have a pretty good group who gets along really well on and off the ice” the captain pointed out as he returned to his natural serious demeanor. “Anytime you have that it’s a positive thing. It translates off the ice, on the road, to the game on the ice”.

Ladd has also noticed the fans in Atlanta are starting to take notice of the team’s good play. And he understand that Ws in the standing are what’s helping in the renewed sense of optimism around Thrasherville.

“[The organization] has been talking about getting people into the building and what we can do for them. The biggest thing we can do is winning and bringing an exciting brand of hockey. I think we’ve done our part and it’s fun to see the fans respond and get excited about it”.

11-2-2…not  tough to get excited about that at all.

Yeah. Ladd was definitely the best choice and the choice of several posters on here before the season started if I remember correctly.

Now it’s time to lock him up long term and break the captaincy jinx.

JB, I don’t think you can extend an RFA before Jan. 1st, right? But I agree with your sentiment that it will be done soon (wasn’t there a comment by Dudley last month that they were going to start negotiations with Ladd and try to sign him on Jan. 1st?). I’d like to see a 5 to 7 year deal, then lock Buf up, but not sure that can be done with the current ownership cluster.

Ladd is great, and what is even more wonderful is the respect and love the guys on the team have for Rammers and the coaching staff – and it shows on the ice and how they talk about him. I think that we will continue to see great hockey!

I hope they resign Ladd and Buff before long. That would go a long way for this franchise in proving it’s willing to find a way to keep the better players on the roster.

Looks like you’re getting to do more interviews lately Rawhide. Enjoy reading the players reactions to your questions. Great job as always!

I wonder what the players think of Bergfors? Is it the doghouse because he doesn’t play the way Ramsey wants, or does it go deeper? Maybe it’s just his personality, but he always seems gloomy and aloof. I wouldn’t care where I played in the NHL if the team I was on was winning and on the up and up. His personality reminds me of Hossa’s. A little too much ego and little natural comradery is how he seems to come across at times in interviews and on ice.

Think you could get a decent interview out of him Rawhide? Maybe that would help us understand his perspective on things.

Ladd and Buff need to be the first guys resigned after Jan 1.

Good to gauge the value of a captain when the team is winning, but his tougher test will be when the team huts the skids and loses 4 in a row. That will be the real test, getting ht team back on the winning track. It is bound to happen again this season.

Shout out to the Smoothinator (did I do that right?) . . . for the good call on the game Sat. night being pivotal in terms of contender or pretender status. Earlier years, we would’ve crapped the bed, but that game Sat. night was a sign this club is for real.

Re. the Bergfors and Eager situations. It’s clear to all of us that this club is coming together as a tightly knit group who has completely bought into the coaches system. And most of you know that on any successful team, the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts when all on the same page. So, let’s say that one or two players has either A)not bought into the system and won’t follow the coach’s instructions or B) is not well liked by the other guys in the room. If that were the case, then a good coach would remove those players from the lineup to ensure the other guy’s continue to stick together and play within his system, no?

Ladd was named captain the day after Eager had an awful turnover in our zone resulting in a goal against and we had a complete 2nd period meltdown, and the following intermission break, we heard reports of players yelling at each other in the room. Eager also had a problem in Chicago last year of similar breakdowns in his decision making on the ice. So, for conjecture’s sake, let’s assume Ladd called out Eager in that break, the next period you may recall we kicked rear, and the next day Ladd was named captain. Choices were made that day, and doghouses were built. Another certain player continued to not follow coach’s instructions and while this player is well liked and did pot his share of goals, he’s not following coach’s instructions and you can’t have that or others may decide to jump off the system. A system that everyone is on the same page with and the results show it’s effectiveness.

Team. Together Everyone Achieves More.

Regarding this notion that the owners might not be of mind to pony up the money needed to keep Ladd and Buff here long-term…Look, everyone here knows what I think about the Great Octocluster. But remember, they green-lighted Waddell to offer up $10 mil per season to Kovy last winter. Why would they noy OK allowing RD to do what is needed to kee these guys around?

I know we are all jaded from the past…but let’s not forget they were willing to ckoke up the money for Kovy.

Joe Friday

Bill, I was hopeful for that as well, but a year has gone by since they made the Kovy offer and apparently the owner’s capital situation has gotten worse since then (per Daly, who referenced Levenson by name just this past Friday). A year ago, Levenson said they had a new investor lined up, today there’s no one, despite the efforts of a third party investment firm to drum up the money.

I think Ladd is doable, not sure about Buf as he’s going to cost a ton.

Did anyone catch Rammer’s post-game conference on Saturday? He was asked about “accountability,” and he referenced a situation where one of the Thrashers had committed a turnover and when that player came back to the bench, before Rammer could even get over to him, another player was already talking to him and letting the offending player know where he had erred and what he needed to do to correct it.

THAT is what I’m looking for out of this team. How much do you want to bet that Ladd was the “instructing” player in question…? (Just my guess).

Can’t wait for my next game at The Bulb (probably Sunday v. Lightning at this point) so I can go to the Hat Trick Bin and see the name “Eric Boulton” forever etched upon it!!

The core of this team and the exceptionally talented players are still very, very young in hockey life. Hockey rosters turn over, but when you have a nucleus like this of hard-working blue collar players willing to play the system and play for each other you typically see multi-year playoff appearance runs. Even when the Thrash made the playoffs I knew it wasn’t going to last, the core of that team wasn’t going anywhere together. This is different. This is Falcon-esque. Watching this team play is INSPIRING.

First off, I can’t believe Bolts got the hat trick! Well deserved for such a hard working member of the team.

Ladd is showing the humility required of a good leader, but I am sure his leadership has a lot to do with the chemistry in the room and the success that comes from that.

As for the coaches, I was excited when I heard that they hired Rammer exactly because of the kind of patient, teaching coach that he is. That is what is needed on a young team like this. His approach has been spot on: concentrate on a couple of things at a time until the team gets it right and then move on to the next priority. His comments about the shootout prove that this is his approach. Concentrating on too many priorities at once means that none of them get the attention they need. Of course, that method also requires patience from the fans, as we saw in OCT and early NOV, but once the pieces started falling into place…11-2-2 and a real contender!

I am getting more and more excited about this season. Remember guys and gals, I get most of my Thrash info from here so keep up the good work.

“don’t we have an extra year on Buff’s contract to give us some time?”

Buf and Ladd are both RFA after this year. So, they’ll both be ours for next year, the only question is if it’s one year qualifying offer (no chance), arbitration award (let’s hope not), or long term deal (let’s pray so) that each will play under for next year . . .

WBF – well yeah, if we suffer some key injuries, but I don’t see this team straight up losing 4 in a row in regulation. Perhaps I’m drinking too much kool-aid, but seems like Rammer is too good at making adjustments to avoid long losing streaks. Also, since our last 3 game slide, we are 11 – 2 – 2 with an avg of 32.5 SOG vs 31.06 allowed. This team is applying what Rammer is teaching them and their keeping the shots down which is keeping Pavelec extra sharp. If we can get through December without losing 3 or 4 in row, then look out cuz the schedule actually gets a bit easier. But then again, other than Kovy’s team, it’s pretty much parity across the board! :-)

Back to contracts-I still say the best way to show people that this team is serious for the long haul, is to get Buff and Ladd inked to long term deals. Show the commitment, pony up so we close the door on talent leaving town. That will put people in the stands.

Dudley was on the post game show after Saturday night’s win. Mentioned a few times that he wants character guys that can skate. Wonder if Bergie’s character is in question.

Also, I can’t help but wonder what Bob Hartley was thinking as he watched that game on Saturday. He was the guy that preached to Kovy over and over and over about becoming a plus player and he’d be the best player in hockey. Kovy seemed to be buying into that until Hartley was let go, and I think we can almost trace Kovy’s offense only mindset to Hartley’s departure.

Leafs TV reporter tried to make a point about the lack of big crowds in Atlanta. MacArthur took the bait…

…”playing here, it’s as good as it gets for excitement and stuff like that. In Atlanta, during the week, you get between 5,000 and 10,000 people for games and makes it tough to get up for games. It’s just a totally different atmosphere.”

Byfuglien on LeafsTV…”the room is real loose and it’s good to have people joking around.”

Little on LeafsTV…”It’s a more positive atmosphere. We’ve got guys coming to the rink every day believing that we can beat any team, and we’ve beat some pretty good teams this year and the energy in the dressing room is unbelievable.”

Interesting in that amongst those comments, are a lot of comments about how the thrashers are 1) a lot better and 2) a lot better since getting rid of a certain #17 …

And very few of them expect the Leafs to win (general consensus was 6-0 or 6-2 in factor of ATL …)

Now we just have to do our part and make that happen.

Rawhide- On my way to ATL Saturday I stopped by Little 5 Points to go to a few of my favorite record stores. I took my friend into Junk Man’s Daughter and the two guys at the bag check commented on my Thrashers T-shirt saying, “have fun at the game tonight” and wishing they could go but had to work. They seemed a bit surprised when I told them I expected 15-16,000 for the game. They thought that would be great if it was that well attended. Even better that 17,000 + showed up. Better still when a couple of hipsters in Little 5 notice and comment positively on a Thrashers shirt.

Oh the times they are a changing in Blueland and the ATL. No Team For You!

Wanted to share with you a couple of quotes about Boulton’s night from Thorburn and Oduya from the other night.

I asked Thorbs if Bolts’ three goals and his own three point night was the ultimate reward for fourth-line types who are counted on for other things…”We put the time and the work in, the extra stuff, but not always does it pay off. Boulton works hard. He brings a lot to the hockey club. He’s not just a role guy or a fighter. He does his job well and he’s definitely got some skill as you saw Sat. night. It’s nice to contribute offensively, obviously!”

Oduya on Boulton…”He’s always trying to get other guys into the game. He’s always pushing and he’s a good guy to have around. It’s very satisfying to see him have a night like that because I think people in the stands and outside the room don’t see or really know how much he contributes to the team.”

Just so you know, I cannot get Oduya to say much of anything about his own game. He is selfless and constantly talks about the team concept and how well the team is playing and how that helps his own performance.

An example… when I asked him if he felt like he was playing some of the best hockey of his career.
“We feel like we are more solid, that we can win every night and I feel it is something that I am a part of too.

2-0 Thrashers after 1

Thrashers were all over the Leafs in the first few minutes. Got 2 goals 28 seconds apart and could have scored 2 more into empty nets.

Then they lost it for the 2nd half of the 1st period and Toronto took it to them. Pav’s was strong and they boys did protect the front of the net, but it was very sloppy with many failed attempts to get it out of the zone along the boards. The Thrashers have to attack up the middle in the 2nd period.

Imagine if you will that the Thrashers got favorable calls like the Maple Leaf’s do.

They really must suck if they get that much referee love every night and still have such a bad record.

That call on Buff was just because the guy he was going against was weak. Even the Leaf announcers were amazed at how bad a call it was.

Great job by Toby and Modin to get the 2 goal lead back.

I noticed the very complimentary words from the leafs studio team…and yeah they seem to be more than a little shocked to be saying “Atlanta Thrashers” and “fundamentally sound” in the same sentance…truthfully, I am still having trouble with it myself. But The Byfuglien has shut me up about him being a value on the blueline, Pavelec has stopped leaning up on his tippy-toes and is now daring shooters to see if they can beat him glove-high.

Ok that goal by Stewart was just about as pretty a takeaway-to-goal as you’re going to see-that’s also a play that a timid team doesn’t even attempt.

Nice to see our team going from laughingstock to “for-real”…they keep playing this way and they’ll be going from “for-real” to “winner”…so nice to see.

That Kane>Little>Stewart goal was the epitome of how this team is playing. Kane with a little extra effort before exiting the zone, a quick poke, almost trips his man but gets the puck out to Little, who drives the net, starts to fall but as he’s falling to the ice, looks back and sees Stewart, and flips the pass back and Stewart fires it home. the call on Buf for being too strong was weak sauce, but the call on Enstrom is ridiculous. You can high stick the crap out of someone on a shot follow through, it’s not a penalty. That the refs don’t know that is a sign of how poorly managed this league is from a front office standpoint. Awful.

The waffles crack me up. The story is that the guy who threw them the first night called in to a show yesterday up in TO saying he did it because obviously the Buds are playing so poorly because they aren’t getting their pregame meal and could use some nutrition to build strength, so he brought them waffles. I think it’s hi-larious on his part. Security didn’t look amused as they strong armed him away last night . . . how embarrassing for them but quite surreal to be a Thrashers’ fan these days. After taking apart Kovy and the Devils Sat. nite, to walk into Toronto and completely take them apart to open the game, and have them start chanting fire Wilson, throw waffles on the ice, and go home completely outclassed, it’s just . . . surreal. But I like it.

Don’t stress out when you see the empty seats tonight, Tues. nite game against the Blues in an awful location with a 7pm start time = 12k fans tops. But they’ll keep coming, lots of Friday night games in the 2nd half that are going to be packed

Alan, I suggested on the TSN blog that the Laffs be moved to a more supportive environment in a southeast city, but quickly retracted that when I realized how much it would dilute our mighty division. Thanks to all you posters who fight the good fight on that unfriendly forum – Cornbread and Spud Webb (I think), I’m looking at you. And I’m racing with you to a “Karma” level of 1 out of 10.

Speaking of our mighty division, TSN was a bit dismissive of the Caps great record last year because they got to play so many games against the “weak” SE division. Any chance they’ll apply that same logic to Vancouver and Montreal, leaders of the two weakest divisions in hockey this year? Didn’t think so.

Zoomo, that goal epitomizes this team and how they’ll bleed for one another. Contrast that play with the play of No. 17 – not that y’all need any more examples, but the first goal by Nashville in Friday’s game epitomizes all that’s wrong with Kovy’s play. A Thrasher would have thrown their body along the boards to stop the puck, not wave at it whimsically with his stick. Again, good riddance!

I fear another Ranallo warning, but I have been doing a bit of research this morning and thought you might be mildly interested in my findings.

From Dec. 9, 2005 to Jan. 18, 2006, the Atlanta Thrashers (13-2-3) earned a total of 29 points out of a possible 36. In the first 18 games of the 2006-07 season, the Atlanta Thrashers earned 27 out of a possible 36 points. The team also was 13-5 from Feb. 24 to April 3, 2009, including five wins in the shoot-out/OT, for a possible 26 of 36 points.

So, the Thrashers can establish a new mark for wins and points during any 18-game stretch in its history with two wins in its next two games.

The team record for wins in the month of December is 10, which was established in the Thrashers second season, when they posted a 10-5 record. Currently: 6, with 6 games left.

The team record for wins through the month of December is 23 in 2006-07 when the Thrashers were 23-11-6 in their first 40 games. Currently: 19-11-5 with 6 games left.

The team record for home wins in a season is 24 and the record for points earned in 41 home games is 52. Currently: 10/22 with 23 home games remaining.

The team record for road wins in a season is 20 and the record for points earned in 41 away games is 45. Currently: 9/21 with 24 road games remaining.

Every team in Thrashers history has had a losing streak of at least five games at some point during the season. Current longest: 3 games.

The team record for wins Jan. 1 and after was established in the 2005-06 season, when the Thrashers concluded the season with a record of 25-16-2 in its last 43 games. They were just 20-17-5 after Jan. 1 in the 2006-07 season.

And, even with the overall production, no one has gotten close to this record yet this season: In 2006-07, Marian Hossa had points in 11 consecutive games (Feb. 17-March 12, when he had 7 goals and 11 assists.

See you tonight?

Red Light, I most enjoyed your research, as always. That’s a post I think you should repost. People might have missed it here.

By the way, I remember that 10-5 December under Head Coach Curt Fraser. Unfortunately, it was quite the anomaly of that season.
