Thrash… buddy. Why’d ya do it?

Last Friday night as I watched the Thrashers take on the Colorado Avalanche, I received a text message from my buddy Thrash. His message read, “Hey Rawhide. Where you at? I have something for you”.

I responded that I was with the Rawhide’s Rowdies in section 204 and that I’d be looking for him. Moments later, Thrash came bounding up the steps with his entourage in tow and he was carrying a covered plate. When he reached the row I was sitting in…he handed the dish over to me.

When I uncovered it, I discovered his gift to me was…a plate of chicken wings.

Although I was thrilled to have the Atlanta Thrashers mascot present me with such a delicious, tasty meal, I did find it odd that a bird was serving up…well, another bird. Yes, very nice of him, but also very…well, creepy.

As I devoured the plate of wings Thrash had delivered to me, I had no idea what was troubling the Thrashers beloved mascot. Poor Thrash…if I had only known (photo by The Divine Mrs. R)

As I devoured the plate of wings Thrash had delivered to me, I had no idea what was troubling the Thrashers beloved mascot. Poor Thrash…if I had only known how troubled he was (photo by The Divine Mrs. R)

As this week has proceeded, I noticed some other strange activities coming from my feathered friend. Tweets from Thrash saying things like “should I do it?” and “I’m taking a risk but unsure how far I can go. When it’s all said & done you & I both will know! Long day ahead”…reports that he would pace up and down the bleachers at the Thrashers Practice Facility in Duluth…being respectful to fans of visiting teams…actually cleaning out his nest!.

No, none of these activities were normal at all for Thrash.

And today, we find out that Thrash was nabbed by Gwinnett County PD speeding down the highway at 5…maybe 6…miles per hour on a stolen Zamboni. This is disturbing and shocking, to say the least. Oh if I had only known that his visit last Friday night with a plate-o-wings was just his way of looking for some attention…his sad, pathetic, warped, demented way of crying out for help!

His issue? Well, it seems he has been distraught over the fact that Atlanta sports fans have still not seemed to have gotten the message of how well this Thrashers team has been playing and wanted to draw attention to them by way of this outlandish stunt.

Later in the day, Thrashers reporter Shea Allen informed the concerned citizens of Thrasherville that Thrash had gone before the judge and was found guilty of Grand Theft Zamboni…an offense that could have caused the bird to fry in the chair. Or frying pan…I’m really not up to speed on my criminal law.

However, Thrash will, instead remain in the Gwinnett County jail until 5,000 addition seats have been sold for the remaining home games in the month of December. In an official statement, Atlanta Thrashers SVP & CSO Tracy White said, “While the Thrashers organization doesn’t condone the illegal actions taken by Thrash, we do support his motives and hope the citizens of greater Atlanta will wake up and support the team”.

“We find the judge’s ruling fair and will do anything in our power to assist in meeting the stipulations for release”.

To that measure, the Thrashers organization has announced two ways in which you can help free Thrash.

The first is to make a $50, $100 and $250 ticket package donation. Tickets to games will be offered in return.

You may also purchase individual tickets to any of the remaining home games:

Saturday December 18 vs. New Jersey

Tuesday December 21 vs. St. Louis

Sunday December 26 vs. Tampa Bay

Thursday December 30 vs. Boston

I’ve known Thrashers for several years. And though he’s been known to do some crazy things during a Thrashers game, he’s a good bird really. As one of his neighbors told me, “Thrash is kind of quiet at home, keeps to himself. I would have never known he was capable of just…just…just snapping this way”.

All I can say about my friend Thrash is that I hope this entire sticky matter can be put behind him soon and that we see him back at Philips Arena soon. In the mean time…I’m heading to the Gwinnett lockup to pay my buddy a visit and I hope I can get a special care package into him.

By the way…anybody out there know how I might be able to conceal a file inside of a plate of seeds and worms?

If the Thrashers had really wanted to make a funny commercial, when the police caught Thrash, they should have pulled his head off revealing Don Waddell with a “Buy Tickets” sign in his mouth.

It’s sad to ask this stupid question; but if the Thrashers do not sell the additional tickets and announce a move to MapleLeafLand – will poor old Thrash be on deathrow or get a life sentence without parole? Before I begin my rant, let me say that I go to probably 90% of the home games.

As much as like the idea of getting more people into BLUELAND!!! I still don’t like that they say we need to wake up. We’ve had a great run of 12 games. 12 games!!!! Does 12 games overshadow 10 years of crap? I don’t know.

I went to a Thrashers game their first season. Thrash, whoevever he is, hassled me in the stands after I showed enthusiasm for a goal of the opposing team. I really did not appeciate him making me the center of attention; I felt like socking him in the beak.

Why do the Thrashers even need a mascot? Is Phillips Arena just another Chuck – E – Cheese??

In additon, the Thrashers’ logo on their uniforms is very disrespectful of actual Brown Thrashers, looking more like a falcon than a a Thrasher.

Clever, clever stuff. They need to do a lot more of it to simply call attention to hockey here. With only one Zamboni (one was impounded) will that lengthen the time between periods. I sure hope so given the lines at some of the concessions. Get Thrash out. Go Thrash.

I don’t get it on Bergy being out again. It may be, like has been reported, that Rammer doesn’t put you back in until the team loses. He has said in the past at least twice that getting back in the lineup won’t be easy or automatic and you better be ready to play when you do get back in. If so, Bergfors should really be revved up and ready to go.

Or, it may be as has been speculated and there is a trade in the works. However, I figure it is just like coach says: You play hard or you don’t play.

If the Thrashers had the gumption to run an ad campaign, “You sellout Philips Arena, we’ll fire Waddell at the conclusion of the game,” they’d have to lift the curtain and sell standing room only seats to save Waddell’s hide. And even then, I think his goose is cooked. I don’t care if capacity is 18,545. We’d have 21,500 huddled together at Philips Arena, like immigrants headed into Ellis Island, 60 years ago.

Did you see … our old pal, Pavel Kubina, got an assist. Good for him.

Re: Thrash, I think there’s a half dozen Defense Attornies in the metro area who’d just love to take this case apart before a jury. Positive ID, Pfft! Conclusive DNA?? Since when has that convicted anyone?? And that video was totally doctored up. It’s completely circumstantial evidence. The prosecution’s case has no hard evidence. Its case is replete with hearsay, conjecture, and idle speculation. Well, I suppose those are kiiiinds of evidence.

I think Thrash should sue the pants off those Gwinnett PD officers, then have the court order an examination of their finances, to have them explain their lavish lifestyles, with a paid salary that simply cannot support that kind of lifestyle. And how many others … have the Gwinnett PD unjustly hustled, swindled, and horswoggled in the form of “T-stop” violations. It’s just gov’t backed bullying tactics, designed to confiscate more of your hard earned money. Pure and simple. Those officers probably took a knight stick to the zamboni’s tail light, too, citing yet another violation, to add to their trumped up charges. When is this “police state” going to be clamped down? I’m calling for a full investigation of all the arresting officers. Since when is it a crime to go five, maybe six miles per hour, when there is no posted “minimum speed limit” sign? Ladies and gentlemen, this is an open and shut case of gov’t overstepping its bounds, abusing its authority, and trampling the civil rights of one of Blueland’s most upstanding citizens. If anything, the Gwinnett Po-Po should have to buy up those seats with their slush funds and kickbacks.

As for tonight’s game, good effort overall, I’m just bummed we could’nt get the two points. I can’t totally blame Pavs for that one goal as it came off an unlucky bounce and was caught off guard. To my surprise he did rather well in the shootout, I guess you can call that progress. What’s really glaring to me is that our shooters are coming up empty in the shootouts which is not totally unexpected. While I’m loving our balanced scoring, I’m convinced we are still one good sniper/bonafide top 6 forward from being a totally complete team. I’m sure Duds will work on something, and it would not surprise me if Bergfors is potentially used as trade bait. Other than that, not much to complain about. I’m incredibly proud of this team’s workmanlike effort, hustle and occasional flair for the dramatic. Hopefully this marketing campaign can bear some good results, and we can get some good crowds coming up.

Thrashers use new stunt to sell tickets

Updated Dec 16, 2010 12:04 AM ET
DULUTH, Ga. (AP)
The attendance-challenged Atlanta Thrashers are getting desperate to sell tickets.

The team staged a fake police chase with its mascot on Wednesday in an attempt to pique interest in the surging team, which has won 10 of 12 games but still ranks 28th in the NHL in fan support.

”Thrash” was picked up by officers in suburban Gwinnett County after he supposedly stole a Zamboni from the team’s training complex and took off down a busy highway.

It was all just a publicity stunt. The team says Thrash will be released from custody as soon as 5,000 additional tickets are sold for the remaining five home games in December.

Atlanta is averaging just 11,789 per game, a drop of more than 14 percent from the same time a year ago.

I saw that piece, LAC. Someone at the AP, apparently, isn’t amused. However, it looks like the majority of the hockey community has taken it positively.

What people need to remember, is they’re not really marketing with this stunt to people like you and me, who are established hockey fans. They’re marketing to new and potential fans. If it works, then the above story is irrelevant.

That’s honestly a big problem with the media today. A lot of them report with their biases on their sleeves.

Why is everyone so obsessed with the winning record, sudden accountability, real “team” concept and the appearance of starting to carve out a new identity for the Atlanta Thrashers?

There are two things that everyone in the world must never forgive and forget:

1) Don Waddell is responsible for everything from cheaply made hockey sticks to double-digit unemployment. Until he is tarred and feathered at center ice, life cannot continue for Thrasher fans.

Sorry to stir things up folks, I just think we would all be better off not focusing on Don, enjoying what we have on the ice and the potential for the future if we get our players signed-committed to being here.

If Don quit today we would probably sell another 20-30 for tonight’s and Saturday’s game. Beyond, I don’t see the effect at the gate. Better hockey and accountability is what will get real hockey fans back in the barn. Remember, I am a Bills’ fan. “If Don quit today we would probably sell another 20-30 for tonight’s and Saturday’s game. Beyond, I don’t see the effect at the gate.”

Sorry WBF, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Those few of you that have remained season tix holders (and don’t be shocked by an empty house tonight, it will be empty, Canes always draw the smallest crowds, but we’ll be back Sat. nite for the Kovy show), have the blinders on re. why people left.

The majority of us former season ticket holders left because of Waddell. We used to number, what 13,500 or so, and it’s under 6,000 now, right? Waddell is the poster child for all that went wrong for 11 years, to those of us that left. The Spirit Squad shot them themselves in the foot retaining him. You have to remember that hockey is a niche sport, always has been, always will be. There is no mass market to go after to get to buy tickets, there are only hockey fans to go after, and the hockey fans in this town were season ticket holders and/or attended games in the early years. Please don’t suffer under the delusion that there’s some unknown casual sports fan that is going to come out (those folks will come out in March and April if we look to make the playoffs and actually make them). There are just hockey fans to come out and we’ve been there and spent $1000s of dollars. Hockey fans are a loyal lot, but a stubborn lot. When they turn on an owner, they will not be back until the old regime is gone. I saw it happen in Chicago, and I’ve seen it happen in towns like Pittsburgh (club would be gone if Mario hadn’t come in and put a new face on ownership and saved the day).

So, no, you’re wrong, Waddell being gone would equate to 1000s of ticket sales. It’s the hockey fans they need to woo, not Braves fans, Bulldogs fans, et al, they don’t give a crap unless it’s a playoff game and then they’ve “always been a Thrashers’ fan, look at dat big ol’ Fuglin!” And there are 1000s of hockey fans in this town who rightly held Waddell accountable and won’t spend major coin again until he’s gone.

Winning will continue to sell more tickets, no sellouts, but more tickets (and again don’t be shocked tonight, it’s going to be empty, always was for weekday Cane games). But to rebuild the season ticket holder base, it’s going to take a playoff run this year and it’s going to take a new owner/partner to come in and be the face of the club, a fresh start as it were.

Last night’s game? Frustrating. Hate Tampa. I hate that little midget, I hate that smug LaCavalier, I hate their black unis, I hate their stupid cheerleaders. Hate hate hate losing to them.

Pavs played fine, would’ve had a shutout if that great poke check he made hadn’t had a lucky bounce off the leg. But we’ll find out today if there is a trade for Bergfors and Eager, or if they just were in timeout. No reason to hold them out tonight unless there is a trade in the works. Couldn’t believe we didn’t score on that early PP, they held it in and had plenty of chances, puck just wasn’t bouncing for us last night.

BTW….I want a Free Thrash T-shirt! Ben/Thrash Marketing? Anyone? This is WAY better than waffles. Proceeds can go to the Thrashers Foundation. This thing has all kinds of legs….LOVE the new video with R.U Knuts (and how the “reporter” pronounced the long U sound instead). Brilliant!

Ang Bergie should be back tonight. He’s a waste in the pressbox

Joe-I respect your opinion, and the opinions of others that feel the same way. I guess I am too much of a fan to let all that get in the way of me going to games and enjoying the team. People are making a choice; if the 6,000 / game continues, well, we won’t have this to argue about any longer. This is the fact that many people are missing.

Stir away World Be Free and Joe Friday!!!

Carolina head coach Paul Maurice is 25-8-6 vs. the Thrashers during his career (Carolina & Toronto) and is 12-3-4 at Philips Arena. The road team has won the last six games in the series, and the Canes have won 11 of their last 14 here and are 21-7-3 in their last 31 games in Atlanta.

Ward gets the start tonight and overall he is 15-8-2 vs. the Thrashers, has made 25 starts and has a 3.10 GAA and a .892 save percentage. In Atlanta, however, he is 10-3 lifetime with a .922 save percentage.

The Canes have 9 points in their last 7 road games, dropping just one decision in regulation time, but, they are just 2-4-1 this season in the second game of a back-to-back situation.

I know many people don’t think historical results make any difference to a future result, but success and failure does have a lot to do with confidence. I expect Ward to be sharp tonight after getting a quick hook in Florida last night.

I didn’t think Atlanta was sharp at all last night. Five PP opps yielded nothing and it was just one of six games all year that the Lightning allowed one goal or less. I think we’ll get the Thrashers best effort tonight and hope to see both Bergfors and Eager back in the line-up. Sorry, but Modin just doesn’t do much for me at this point in his career.

I know Smoothie is a big one for face-off stats, and the Canes have been brutal this year. Keep an eye on the draws. One other thing I didn’t expect, is that the Thrashers have four defensemen with 57 or more blocked shots this season, led by Sopel. Carolina’s leader has 50.

What did we have, 5 PP opportunities? Other than one of them, I thought we were having a hard time getting the puck in and getting into the offenssive set on the PP.

Rough opening of the 1st period. Pavs was once again on top of his game and weathered that early storm. Outside of the Pp, I thought we played well after that.

Without Salvamatic, our offensive shoot out prospects are not too good. I wanna see Buff in the first SO slot.

Tonight we find out if this Thrashers team is really better. A chance to tie for 2nd or 3rd in the East with a win. Last year, every time they faced this type of game, they got shelled. See Boston March 23rd. Chance to beat Boston and be 6th. Lost, at home, 4-0.

Pens lose again (2 in a row)-NHL Network is no longer trumpeting Pittsburgh as the team of destiny.
Caps lose again – mpst peopel are looking aty the coach as the issue, I say the team has the wrong player makeup. I think McPhee left the same thing when he traded his captain to Columbus for Chimura. Semin’s agent had better remind Alex that this is his contract year.
Chicago loses again-boy do they miss the players they shipped to ATL.

Some quick thoughts:

1. Surprised we got out of last night’s game with a point. There were times when I thought we were just going to let it slip away. However, like so many others have said, while I hate losing to a division rival, I’ll take 5 of 6 road points every time;

2. I like the “Thrash’s arrest” promo. It’s tongue in cheek (beak?) and get noticed by the non-hockey community.

3. I’ll be at the game tonight with Lilibeter and we are planning on taking not only two friends with us, but two “hockey rookies” that will be attending their first game. Are you guys continuing to do your part to bring new fans to the game? Stroz, I’ll try to drop by and say, “Hey!”

4. I’ll also be at the Devils’ game with Lilibter and my sons on Saturday (helping to do my part to Free Thrash). My personal opinion is that for that game we should start a “KOVY…THANK YOU!!” chant after all he did to help us by forcing “The Trade.”

5. Brendan: as one of the many defense attorneys in town, I can say that I would take Thrash’s case in a heartbeat! So many defenses (including mistaken identity…no??).

Speaking of Kaner, he needs to worry less about Atlanta’s inability to handle icy conditions and worry more about how to get out of his own way on the ice. He needs to stick-handle less and think about passing to his center more as Little will get it back to him. I’m really getting tired of him thinking he’s going to out-race every single D-man to the net. And even when he does, he can’t finish. Give up the puck early, get it back with time and space and bury it! We need a goal from Kaner tonite.

Also, how many great chances did Laddy squander last nite? He must be kicking himself for flipping that puck over the wide open net on the 1st period PP after a sweet feed by Buff left him all alone in front of a sprawled out Smith…woulda made it 2 to 0 and put us in great shape the way our defense was playing last nite. Perhaps he’s saving his goals for his old mates from Raleigh…I’m sure he”ll enjoy going against old pal Eric Staal for the first time in regulation as a Thrasher.

Even going only 5-6 mph, he would still have gotten slowed down by I-85 traffic. Driving a non-street legal vehicle with no driver’s license, no insurance, no tag, no lights, etc. Harkens back to the days of Hosea Williams on Atlanta’s roads.
