Don’t miss out on this Thrashers team Atlanta

Earlier this week NESN’s Jack Edwards opined that Atlanta sports fans are missing out on what he describes as a “young, explosive” Thrashers team. In his open letter to the residents of Thrasherville, he chastises the fans for not making more of a showing at Philips Arena when the Thrashers play at home.

“You have a helluva hockey team in the making right now”, Edwards writes. “And there are plenty of good seats available — almost embarrassingly so”.

Now, anytime a writer from up north pens such an observation it tends to get our britches in a bunch. However, until fans so up and rock the place for this very, very good Thrashers team…it’s to be expected.  But Jack Edwards is also paying the Thrashers players a big complement in his piece, and I appreciate seeing the positive press regardless of where it originates.

The Thrashers have had quite a bit to celebrate lately (AP Photo/Chris Schneider)

Such recognition regarding this team is not only coming from our frozen neighbors to the north, but they are also starting to get the attention of the on-air sports personalities around Atlanta too. Recently, Fox-5’s Ken Rodriguez was heard saying this about out team:

“Call me a sucker, but I’ve been bitten by the Thrasher bug again! And this time I really believe in Blueland! They are arguably the best “team” the franchise has fielded since they opened shop eleven years ago. And today, goaltender Ondrej Pavelec and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien were given the NHL’s top-two stars for a week that produced five-straight victories over some of the leagues traditional powerhouses. I know, 58-games to go, but these Thrashers may be the best ever. There is a lot of season left, but the stars are shining bright in Blueland! The Thrashers are rolling through the league right now and they beat Washington, Detroit, Montreal and Boston, who are four of the league’s top teams, during their current five-game win streak.”

Yes…I would agree. These Thrashers just may be the best ever iced by the organization. And we in Thrasherville cannot be more please with them lately.

But it is time for the fans to not only take notice…but to show up as well.

To that point, the Thrashers and I are announcing this year’s first Rawhide’s Rowdies group outing at Philips Arena. It will be on Friday night December 10 when the Colorado Avalanche pay Blueland a visit.

Fans purchasing tickets to sit with Rawhide's Rowdies in section 204 on December 10 will also receive a Thrashers tee shirt

Fans purchasing tickets to sit with Rawhide's Rowdies in section 204 on December 10 will also receive a Thrashers tee shirt

They have been kind enough to offer up readers of this blog…and really anybody else wanting to see a game…seats in section 204 at a reduced price of $30. These are normally $47 seats, so right there you save $17 per.

But wait…there’s more.

If you call Karin at (404) 878-3781 or e-mail her at Karin.Beckman@atlantaspirit.com and tell her you’re a member of Rawhide’s Rowdies, you’ll also receive a free Thrashers tee shirt that retails for $20.

That’s a seat in the lower bowl and a tee shirt… a $67 value combined… for only $30.

There will be other such deals available for future games to be announced. But I invite you all to join me in section 204 when the Thrashers take on the Avs again.

Regardless of whether you attend that night or not, I urge you not to miss out on seeing this team up close and personal. If you’re a hockey fan or just a fan of Atlanta teams, don’t cheat yourself out of seeing this team at the beginning of what could be a very good run.

I got Ranallo’d. Sorry for the repost.

Ya know, looking at the goaltenders we’ve defeated this year. Here’s a link: http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/teams/schedule/ATL/atlanta-thrashers. M. Neuvirt, Jonas Hiller, Antii Niemi, Marty Biron, Ryan Miller, Tomas Vokoun, Nick Backstrom, Ric DiPietro, Jimmy Howard, and Tuukka Rask are among the list. Seriously, that’s a talented group of netminders that we’ve dispatched. We should start to feel a bit proud of that, I think.

While you’re looking at the list, check out the 0-5-1 Thrashers PRESEASON record. How do you feel about that now, on December 1st?

Preseason doesn’t count for spit. The Colts have one of the worst preseason records in the NFL…think they care?

Will this be a big boys (and girls) night? I have little ones that love to go to Thrashers games…but is this evening suited for them?

Rawhide,

Already bought my tickets for the 10th close to you in Section 202, but will be with you in spirit. Might even come over and visit.

Family (of 5) coming out on the 26th as well and those tickets are actually in Section 204 (row E) – are you in same area every game??

Keep up the good work. I’m not a season ticket holder, but have bought 10 tickets to games so far this year – I’m trying to do my part to fill up some seats.

Is that the Reebok wicking T-shirt? I’ve tried getting those at the two games I’ve been to but the large are always sold out. I may have to go for the shirt alone.

Brendan, I thought the Thrashers played very well in the preseason and also in several of their other losses. I saw a very different style of play and attitude from these Thrashers and had a very good feeling that good things were to come. Let’s hope they only get better.

That’s a good deal, but $30 is still too pricey for me. I may try to get a $10 ticket if my girlfriend hasn’t gotten sick of my hockey obsession just yet. Stay tuned.

Don’t think you need to convince too many of the regulars here on this blog they need to check this team out, it’s the former bulb attendies that quit paying attention to the team and stopped going a few years ago, plus the folks around town that barely know they exist. How does one get their attention? Most of my friends that used to go frequently 5-6 years ago had no clue the team is improved and on a winning streak right now. Some billboards around the major interstates would be a nice start. Some simple slogan like “These are not your daddy’s Thrashers!….It’s time to get reaquinted at the bulb!” Or even better…”Check out the talk of the NHL right now, your Atlanta Thrashers…come and get lit at the bulb! $$1 dollar drafts on every weeknight game!”

@ Matt H. I guess these Rowdies are a kick in the ice! But I wasa round when the Rowdies (of Tampa Bay fame) took to the “pitch”. Attended many games, we did. A kick in the grass indeed. As are these Thrashers of late. Like the McDonald’s commercial says…..I’m Lovin’ it!

It is vital that this city start coming out and support this team. There are Canadian cities that would love nothing more than to poach this franchise from us (again). Don’t let this happen. This is a very good hockey team that one day may be a great hockey team. If you never seen NHL hockey live, its addictive. And if you are a regular, you know what I’m talking about. This team and this city deserves the support. People, this is the ATL. The best city in the U.S. ( and Canada). We rock. Lets show the world our greatness.

Rawhide,

you have the best fan blogs on this site (no disrespect to the other fan bloggers) but even you as a long term Atlanta resident should know how this town works.

Until late January don’t expect many casual fans to show up…why…this is a college football town. After that…this is an NFL town now (with the Falcons success and chances they’ll be in the NFC playoffs for a while).

As well as the young Thrashers have been playing now, they take a back seat to SEC football, NFL, etc until those sports are done.

As a casual Thrashers fan myself, I find that I’m much more likely to go to games AFTER the month of Jan. rolls around.

I have been a prowler since the beginning of the season, and have just recently started getting into the Thrashers these past couple of seasons. I went to a preseason game in Nashville because that is where I am currently in school, and they looked good. We obviously lost, but I said then that this was going to be a good team. I didn’t know the half of it.

@Rawhide – I am a college student and watch the games on websites all season. I am a very big Thrashers fan, but the problem is that I never get to go to games. Is there any way you can work out a college night over Christmas break where college ID’s can get you a discounted ticket and maybe a t-shirt or something for going?

GO THRASHERS!!

I was griping about WAGA and WXIA’s almost complete lack of coverage and saw Kens report on WAGA. Don’t like the fact he brought up the latest “Moving to Winnepeg” rumors but that comes with having a team that let a lot of people down for a decade.
The tides have changed and I hope that the December doldrums don’t hit our boys – I want us to be more than prepared for the real season come April.

I don’t have a problem with locals bringing up our attendance issues – it is, quite frankly, a fact. I DO have a problem with the Bruins commentator’s condescending piece of garbage – “Dear y’all?” Seriously? And “we’ll bring you up to speed on plus/minus and stuff like that?” I guess Edwards forgets that the lowly Thrashers fanbase outdrew the Bruins on average attendance 3 times this decade – 99-00, 06-07, and 07-08. Thrashers fans will come back when the team wins. Some of us never left, but the casual fan will return.

Gwinnett Fred – Please do come over and pay us a visit.

LittleThrash – Contact Karin at the number listed above in the post. I do believe they have deals for college students and military personnel.

Sopes – Thank you for the kind words. I think your observations about attendance is very close to the mark. But I say…let’s get as many in the barn now.

This has been the most enjoyable Thrashers team to watch in the few years I’ve been a follower, and fan, of the team. Great character, excellent work ethic, and plays the game as a true team. Funny to think that around this time last year, we were fretting over the possibility of losing beloved #17…never would have guessed that I wouldn’t miss seeing him out there in blue one bit. I am so jealous of those of you getting to take advantage of those ticket deals, but getting to the Bulb from So Cal isn’t an easy trick to pull. Hoping to get out there come March/April and help the team grind out the last few games before a playoff run. Get the word out Blueland!

Moreover, it’s the locals that are casual or newbie hockey fans that we need to get in the building. Show those folks what real hockey is, how it’s played, and that our team here in Atlanta (unlike over the last ten years) actually plays it.

I thought it came across as a bit condescending as well, but remember, he’s not addressing it to us. He’s addressing it to the other five plus million people in this city who don’t attend, or don’t give a damn.

But seriously, “Dear Y’all?” Oh well. Edwards has good intentions, even if his method of communicating with the population of Atlanta is misplaced.

My wife and I have introduced her best friend to hockey. He is (was) a Tech fan. He heard us talking about hockey all the time and wanted to know what it was about. Never having watched a game before or understanding the rules he came to the Sabres game (the one WE won) and had a BLAST. He has been asking when the next game we are going to is so he can go again and bring a friend as well. Like has been said, this game sells itself…..you just have to get people in the door to see. I just wish the marketing idiots would reach out to the ex STH base…it would fill the place up quickly short term, and they would come back and pay again, they already proved they love the game, so get them back! It ain’t rocket science “ya’ll”!

Alan R, Dr. you have to remember Jack Edwards from the Broones once worked for ESPN-you have to forgive his ignorance. Working for ESPN is like being trained by monkeys to function in a normal society.

ESPN is having fun with the Derek Anderson outburst after the Monday night football game. They have sunk so low to showing ONE hockey highlight for their “play of the month” adding 3 NBA dunks as “highlights”. Being 6′9″ and dunking is not a skill, sorry.

I like Jack Edwards but where was that article a few years ago when the Bruins weren’t drawing flies?

And the Boston fans didn’t start coming back after a 2 week stretch of good play either. Yes we have attendance issues here but its comical when the media in other cities piles on it with the implication of “that would never happen here” – when in many cases, it has, and recently.

For those of you who play NHL11 online they have released the code for the 7 alternate sweaters – it is bcxkg8fkx3h4m3p5 .
Speaking of that, I’d love to see if we can lobby the NHL to have a day on the schedule where teams battle their cities former team (if the team had moved) – I think a night of Calgary vs Atlanta, Dallas vs Minnesota and AVS vs Devils, with each team wearing some sort of “Throwback” jersey (I’d love to see a 70’s interpretation of a Thrashers Jersey)
Some may disagree or think its a stupid idea, but it is something that would be special for teams that will seemingly never have a winter classic because the Pens seem to be invited every year. Speaking of the Pens – I HOPE WE STOMP THEM BY AT LEAST 5 POINTS!
GO THRASHERS!!

The other comical media note is how nothing has been said until this winning streak occurred. I want Thrasher notes and news from pre-season on.
Not just at some random point when there is a fire engine or cop car in the shot to make the news interesting.Figuratively speaking of course.
So if the Thrash drop four or five close ones, do Ken Rodriguez and the other sports dweebs drop it like a hot potato??? Until it’s newsworthy again???
I remember the second class coverage we have had up until now. I do appreciate it,but where is the ’stick to it’ sense of professionalism.
If we have MLB,NFL,NBA and NHL, then cover them properly. Regardless of standing.2,5,11,36,46, and all the radio pukes too!!

And here in atlanta it’s “thats a bad sportstown” when we don’t go?? And it should be, we’ve sucked, not going. Now with the win streak and some talent, we don’t have an excuse not to go. Thrasher have made changes, added talent, moved DW, and are winning, we have no excuse now. If we don’t go now, we deserve the label of bad sports town, all of course imho!!!
