Wednesday afternoon I was sitting in my office when a knock came on the door. It was my friend Sal from the mailroom who had a package for me. He just sat it on my desk without comment. When I pealed back the plain brown paper wrapping, all that I found inside was a soiled, soggy milk carton.
I looked up and asked, “What…what is this? What does this mean?”
Sal replied, “It’s a message from Todd White. It means your milk carton sleeps with the fishes”.
A message…from Todd White? Why, what for? I mean, what in the world did I ever do or say about Todd White that would make him want to send me such a message? Hmmm…??
Later in the evening, I then found out why he wanted to get my attention. White suited up in a New York Rangers blue shirt and scored a goal against his former team. Trailing 5-2 to the Thrashers, Whitey backhanded home a rebound to pull the home team to within two. Atlanta forward Fredrik Modin allegedly was defending White on the play.
It was his first goal of the season and it turned what was a comfortable Thrashers lead into what would become a bit of a nail-biter just moments later. White’s goal was then followed a few minutes later by another, pulling the Rangers to within one. Brian Boyle did the honors this time as he was left alone on the far post.

Eric Boulton is congratulated by his Thrashers teammates after scoring his first goal of the season. He wasn't the only player notching his first in the 6-4 win over the New York Rangers Wednesday night (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II)
Someone in a Thrashers jersey really needed to just clear him out from in front of the goal, should have put a hit on him, should have …ahem…popped that Boyle when they had a chance.
However, with the score 5-4, Andrew Ladd’s empty netter iced the game for the Thrashers fourth win of the season.
“It was kind of stupid to let them back in the game,” Nic Bergfors said afterwards. “We stopped working a little bit there and they took care of it, but we got it done”. Bergfors scored his first goal of the season in the victory, an unassisted top-shelf blast from the right side that put Atlanta up 3-2 in the second period.
Bergie wasn’t the only Thrasher who found net for the first time this season. Bryan Little also did so when he sliced his way through the defense and beat Marty Biron. That tally tied the game at one-all in the first period. Later in the game Eric Boulton joined Little and Bergfors in getting off The Schnide as he scored off a rebound to provide what would turn out to be the deciding goal.
Alex Burmistrov set up Evander Kane on a goal in the second period to put the Thrashers up 2-1. It was the first NHL point for the rookie forward.
Another first for this team…in holding New York to 28 shots on goal, it was the first time Atlanta has held an opponent to less than 30 SOG all season. It only took nine games to do so. I wish I could report that they also outshot the opposition for the first time this fall, but the Thrashers only got off 26 of their own.
What was not a first, however, was seeing the Thrashers’ defense let up another goal due to sloppy play around their goal. A turnover early in the first period led to a Ryan Callahan goal that put the Rangers up 1-0 only 38 seconds into the game.
Also, and I try not to hold netminders solely responsible when goals are allowed, but the Sean Avery wrap-around tally that tied the score at two all was due to Chris Mason’s slow reaction to Avery’s move around the back of the net. The Thrashers goalie then was unable to get to the post before the puck was snuck in.
For the game, Mason stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced.
By winning in New York, Atlanta improved their overall record to 4-4-1 and bumped their road record to 3-2-1.
And finally, I want to thank my good friends at Guston’s restaurant in Kennesaw for hosting a small group of us Wednesday night to watch the game. Donnie runs a great little place there and he set us up in a nice private room to enjoy the night’s festivities. The lovely and charming Katie took great care of us, providing some much-needed “mojo” when the Thrashers really needed it.
Thanks guys…we’ll see ya again next Wednesday.
And I’ll see you all at Philips Friday night when the Thrashers get a chance to make amends for the giant, steaming pile of FAIL that they dropped on the ice last week against the Sabres.

Guess who drew another penalty with his slick skating and strong puck skills?! Yep, Johnny Burma. That kid is gonna be special in time. Could be the perfect set-up man for the “man” named Kane.
Also, how many more lousy efforts by Modin will it take to convince Ramsay that his best position is “healthy scratch”? Someone, ahem Dudley, needs to get on the horn with Lever and tell him that he needs a more macho man to replace Swedee Modin. Yeah, that kid Spencer deserves a shot to play with the big boys on a line with Kaner and the Burmise Python.

I want to state that NO ONE hates the New York Ranjerks more than I! That said. I am pleased the Thrashers secured a victory at Madison Square Garden. Offense was in above average form. I am still thoroughly disgusted with Marshmallow Chris Mason between the pipes! A lead of three goals almost squandered by the Sori Letemin wannabe. Is there a rule which states Thrashers must surrender four or more goals per outing? Please clue me in if there is! Forgive the Devil’s Advocate response. I am happy with regulation victory. Baadly needed. Badly! Hope guys in blue can string a few wins together. At least act like professional hockey team. Hear that Marshmallow man? STENDEK

Also, I want to add that the Devils were losing, 5-2, to San Jose tonight. Heatley, Marleau and Thornton had stellar nights for the Sharks. The Devils fall to 5 games under .500, NHL-style. 2-7-1, I believe. That’s five out of a possible twenty (5/20) for Lou Lamoriello’s Devils. No one loses the Cup or the possibility of playoffs in October. The Devils could be five games under .500 at New Year’s Day, they’ll still make the playoffs, and could, in theory, win the Cup. They’re working out the kinks.
Unfortunately, TB won. Again. Over Pittsburgh, this time. Washington beat Carolina, 3-0, with Neuvirth’s first career shutout. Only 111 more, to catch Brodeur. The Islanders gave Montreal a thrill ride, but came up short. Chicago beat L.A., in what could be a playoff preview, out west, 3-1.
October is nearing a close … and I’ve been thinking, lately, about our Thrashers Player of the Month. Early on, I thought it was Chris Thorburn. Then, I though, Anthony Stewart. But now, I’m almost certain it will be Andrew Ladd, the points leader, with a nice streak going.

I am still very concerned over the number of defensive zone turnovers. Improved team defense was one the positives I expected from Rammer, but I have to say this team is only marginally better in their zone than John Ander-bums teams.
The team defense, especially down low in our own zone has to get better. These defensive pairings still do not have the synergy required to protect a lead. Mason has been OK so far. The Avery goal looked “age-induced” meaning an older goalie that cannot move side to side with great efficiency.

The wailing about “Who will score our goals?!” should subside a bit. The Thrashers are tied for 3rd in goals scored at 29. Unfortunately, they are also tied for 3rd in goals allowed at 33, which gives us our 4-4-1 record.
It could be a lot worse….say, like signing Kovalchuk for $100M and having a 2-7-1 record. I expect the Devils to improve but you never know with the funk they are in.

It’s too early to worry about TB and he Crap’s. ATL must reduce their bad penalties and turnovers in the own zone if they are to have a chance of reaching 90+ pts this season. This team was fortunate to have scoring come alive from different players last night. They will NOT win 80% (or more) of the games where they allow 4 goals. Mason and whoever is back there at the time seem to have no idea what to do to clear a puck out. Complete failure at this one “skill” has resulted in turnovers and most of the goals scored against us this season!
I’m sick of seeing them fiddle around with the puck around our net! I squirm and squirm and nearly crawl out of my chair every time I see Mason touch pass a puck to one of our guys who then seems to forget which side of the rink he’s on. You’d think this would’ve been corrected by now.
Mason just seems out of it. It almost looks like he can’t see out of his mask and spot the puck. Sorry, but he’s not the answer unless he rapidly improves his game. Watching him makes me long for Pavs or Moose. I’m so disappointed in Mason I can’t describe it. Yeah, he’s been taking shots that wouldn’t be there if defense was better…But that’s what he gets paid for. What alarms me is the goals that are scored on him – by all the opposing teams so far – aren’t slap shots. They just maneuver the puck right up in his face and chunk it in either around, above or below. Then he’s so slow, he can’t react fast enough and it’s a goal. His post-goal reactions also indicate he knows he should’ve stopped it. It’s like they all have the book on how to score on Mason.
It’s still a win….But 4 goals against will be a loss most of the time. I hope Pavs brings his A-game when he gets back. And someone needs to make sure Mason drinks a Red Bull or two before every period…..

If that Kane goal was a preview of things to come from the kid then I say HELL YA ! That move to the net reminded me of someone from the past (Not in ATL) but let’s just try walking first.
C’mon Dude ! Twice in one early Thrasher PP Enstrom made two lackluster passes that were inches from being picked off and a clean breakaway for the Rangers. The way Mason was playing I bet I know what would have happened.

Seems to me that every goal scored in close against us is a result of defensive non-mobility. In other words, standing still and the opposition darts in through the statues. Appears more like a zone defense as opposed to man to man. I’ve said it a million times, standing still in this league is a recipe for goals against. Why on earth are two defensemen standing in front of the goal looking behind the goal?! Take a friggin’ man! If you have a body on everyone, no one is open, and no easy bang-bang goals against. I see them follow a guy, then peel off and leave him for the next guy. If the rotation doesn’t work, they end up wide open. Wings should stay with opposition d-men, our-d-men mark their wingers and center on center. It’s not that complicated. You can see when we’re moving on D and chasing the puck carrier, it works. When we chase and peel off, they seem wide open right on the door step.

You all know that I am a Thrasher fan through and through even when the Sabres come to town. The upcoming BUF-ATL game gives us another opportunity to talk about the obnoxious Buffalo fans. The truth of the matter is that they buy tickets, concessions (especially beer) and cheer for their team. You want Buffalo fans out of Phillips? All we need to do is buy the tickets so their there’s no seats left for them. Trust me, Sabres fans feel the same way about obnoxious Maple Leaf and Canadian’s fans so we are not alone.

Sorry, but he’s not the answer unless he rapidly improves his game.
Mason has played in all nine Thrashers games thus far.
Mason is not the kind of goalie that should be doing that.
See, the problem is, Mason is tired. The Thrashers’ plan was to use Mason to help teach Pavelec more of the game. Give the kid confidence and a veteran in the room to talk to. Pavelec and Mason are a 1a-1b tandem. When Pavelec went out, Mason came in and played huge for us.
Mason is an awesome goalie, but not when you play him so many games in a row.

A little nit-picky, but I think Buff’s goal was the game-winner, not Boulton’s.
Agree that the D has got to stop fiddling around with the puck in our own zone. They just look tentative to me. Not sure if that’s because they can’t find anyone to pass to up-ice, or if they’re unsure if they should be the ones to begin the rush, or what.

Stroz,
Regarding Modin and Swedish toilet paper brands, your question can actually be answered with a nyes!!!
There is a Swedish toilet paper manufacturer formerly named MoDo, which has some similarity with MoDin!
The same company that has given its name to the hockey club MoDo that has fostered an extreme disproportunate amount of NHL players compared to the population of the town örnsköldsvik. Good ones too – how about Forsberg, Näslund, the Sedins, Victor Hedman, Anders Hedberg, Sundström and our own Enström to name a few.
However, MoDin will likely not prefer to be associated to MoDo, since he never played for them and during his Swedish career played for their worst antagonists.

Burmistrov continues to draw penalties and looks very capable of playing a full season with the club. Kane’s goal was a beauty although Stewart was standing all alone in front of the goal with no one anywhere near him. Bergfors top-shelf shot was unreal. As mentioned, Mason was awful. Don’t buy the fact he can be tired after three full days off prior to the game like Rawhide said. But, it was a nice two points for the Thrashers, regardless of method. No one need ask for a description of how it was done, as long as it was done. It’s like a scorecard in golf, where no explanation is necessary, just the score!
The Rangers stink. With Prospal, Gaborik and Drury injured, along with Lundqvist sitting last night, that team looked a far cry from its most recent playoff squad when they dropped the final 3 games to Washington after taking a 3-1 series lead. I stand by my prediction that Tortorella will be gone by Jan. 1, and while he’s not the only root of the problem (see Glen Sather), his record against the Thrashers since taking over in 2009 is 1-5, and is 12-14 overall against Toronto, Florida, NY Islanders and Atlanta. That’s not going to cut it!
What a dilemma in San Jose for the venom-spewers about former Thrashers! The Devils lost and Kovalchuk didn’t record a shot, but Heatley had a goal and three assists. Such a tug on the emotions, eh? But, I’m sure everyone is thrilled that Hossa got hurt last night too!

Kane’s goal was really nice though big Buf made that goal happen. Watching the replay he was cocked back for a one timer and three blue shirts were charging him when Kane picked up the puck coming off the bench. Not to take away from the shot itself – that was a beauty.

Ladd is going to be a fan favorite. He has one hear, go go go. It’s still puzzling to me why they didn’t lock him up long term as they knew he was going to get top minutes here and his numbers would skyrocket (hawks used him in a checking line role, which he was very effective at). Mabye his agent knew and asked for the moon, this is going to be a huge arb award to keep him next year, but at least there’s budget room. He is perfect captain material.

As I recall, Mason is a workhouse goalie, didn’t he play long stretches for the Blues?
He’s Moose, no more, no less, he’s solid but won’t steal many games for you. I have not watched that much Thrasher hockey between the kids events and the blackouts, but the stats tell me the goals against average is the result of our defensive woes continuing. The good news there is that is something that can be improved upon, but no dramatically enough. We still need a true #1 shutdown guy, the lack of that is killing us and I’m about to lose my pipedream that Bogo is going to turn into that for us one day.
How much better would our d look with Kubina?

I think our defensive play around the net has been vegan. Eat some steak boys…get a little meaner. A healthy Cormier, Opie and Bogo, a called up Fly and a demoted Modine would help this team tremendously. Put the C on Ladd and As on Buff, Kane and Bogo.

JF – As I’ve said many times before, re-signing Kubina and leaving Buff as a forward would have made this a team very capable of winning a playoff series. I can’t remember if it was C-Viv or who, but someone did report recently that Kubina sounded pretty set on going back to Tampa, so maybe the Thrashers never really had a chance. Who knows?
As for Bogo, I have kind of been thinking the same thing recently. His rookie season he surpassed all expectations, then was a major disappointment last year. I know he was fighting through the wrist injury, but his wrist didn’t have anything to do with often being woefully out of position. Now, he is on the shelf early this season. He is too talented and young to give up on yet, but you could certainly make an argument that he is closer to solidifying himself as an injury-prone bust than a #1 defenseman.
Before they decided to move Buff to D I thought this team would be very capable of scoring goals. I am pleasantly surprised by the scoring so far even with Buff on the blueline. Unfortunately, I knew the GA would be a problem. I still think they should bring up Kulda and move Buff up front. I still think the GA would be a problem, but would make the offense even more potent than it has been to this point.
Also, going into the season I had Oduya pegged as our best all-around d-man while Bogo developed for another season. Oduya has been a disappointment, he needs to step up his game.

Mason played in front of an Andy Murray coached team (in other words: defensively oriented and conservative) so I chalk Mason’s struggles up to poor defense in front of him injuries haven’t helped and Hainsey and Sopel are still getting used to one another. And JoeF is right: if Bogey doesn’t elevate his game when he gets back, we will continue to struggle. However, on a good note, we are blocking a TON of shots. The avg # of BS is still over 17 per gm and that was with only 5 vs Tampa last Friday.

Blue, I agree. Antropov had shifts against New York reminiscent of last year, where he had the dominant, would-not-be-denied type of effort.
After such a weak start, I was getting to the point where I was ready to fast-forward through the first period. Luckily, I gave them another chance and hit play just in time to see Little’s goal. Turned the entire game around.

LMAO at how this thread turned from some really great moments by the Thrashers last night to busting on Sabres’ Fans. Fact of the matter is you have to make it to 4 straight Superbowls to lose 4 straight Superbowls. Please tell me again what the Falcon’s Superbowl history is ? How about the Thrashers Playoff record ? Shall we talk about ticket sales ? This city couldn’t even sell out all the world series games v. the YANKEES. How soon we forget that Chipper wasn’t afraid to speak up about the Lame-o fans in this town. In ‘99 you couldn’t find a Falcon’s T-shirt ANYWHERE because there were none for sale do to lack of support year after year. This city lost the spring race do to lack of ticket sales and you actually thought you deserved the NASCAR HOF here.
Bust on those Buffalo fans all you want but if they were not there on the 2oth about 40 people would have been in the stands. I watch week night games all over the country like the rest of you do via centre ice so forget that excuse too.
The Bills are 0-7 and Sunday in Buffalo is still a college town atmosphere. Everywhere you go people have a jersey on and here my best selling jersey is a green #7 with an eagle on it. SAD people VERY sad !

Russ – indeed. Perhaps he’s extra eye-weary because he’s had to work so hard on tracking the puck the 100 some-odd times it’s been blocked in front of him in the slot. Something tells me that Ramsay has been coaching them to take away the passing lane or wrap-around attempts by sealing the man or neutralizing him behind the net, but bad habits die hard. Mason knows what they’re supposed to be doing and he was cheating to the middle on the Avery wrap-around as there was a man right in front of him who was a potential threat.
Not to make excuses as Avery made a good play and Mason was a tad slow, but Hainsey got worked. Again, I repeat: forearm curls for Ron, Johnny and Toby since they are unlikely going to put someone on their backside, but they MUST be stronger with their sticks in stopping passes / wrap-arounds etc.

Bloggers are talking about Kane’s goal which was good but Little’s goal will be the best in the NHL all year. He went almost endd to end, faked out a couple, roared past a couple and cut in front of the goalie shielding the puck with his left leg before flipping in between the goalie’s pads. Center Ice carried the Ranger broadcast and they showed the replay all night long. The announcers couldn’t believe that it was Little’s first of the year. The way D-buff rushes, he is really somewhere between a D-man and a forward. He makes things happen. Are we seeing the reincarnation of Chris Tamer in Hainsey. Get a milk carton ready for him!

Jimbo – I spent a few minutes reviewing last night’s highlights during lunch. Gotta agree with ya about Little’s goal He undressed Sean Avery and Marc Stall coming through center ice and the blueline before taking Biron to school.
Great stuff.
Now, speaking of taking another look-see at the highlights…I took another gander at the Avery wrap-arounder. I still think Mason should have gotten over quicker, but one thing I really noticed today was the less-than-assertive checking of Brent Sopel when the puck was behind Mason’s right shoulder. It was as if Sopes went over to give an obligatory bump, then let him slip off to the other side of the net.
Done beating that horse now…bottom line is we came away with the two points, three Thrashers got off The Schnide and Ladd and Kane continue to perfom as well as or above what we had hoped for this fall.

Can someone tell me why Little’s been carrying moves like that around in his back pocket for so long? If Kovy wants out and if the Devs want him out, then they can find a way out……But I bet Grossman got paid a big chunk of his up front. LAC, I’m not sure the Devils can put Kovalchuk on waivers, since he cannot be moved to the AHL, due to a no movement clause. But if they chose to simply cut him … I’m not exactly sure they can do that. They might be able to, but if they did … they’d get absolutely nothing for his loss, other than salary relief, once another team claims him. It’d be far better to attempt to trade him. Los Angeles was very interested in him. Lou could pluck assets from the Kings for Kovalchuk. Lou would have to take on some of the Kings higher salaried players to make the deal possible.
I don’t foresee any situation where the Devils would trade Kovalchuk. But if Kovalchuk could be placed on waivers, let’s not forget that the Islanders made Kovy a 10-year/$100 million contract. They’d certainly claim him, at 15-years for the SAME PRICE. So would the Thrashers, if you think about their offer to Kovy, which was $101 million over 12-years. At the end of the day, the Thrashers would probably jump up and down to have Kovalchuk at LESS than what they were offering. The cap hit Atlanta offered was $8.41 million, essentially. They’d be getting him at $6.67 million instead. I think many teams would be interested in Kovalchuk as a waiver claim, even at full price. Let’s also not forget something … several random posters came here to state, “I’ll never go to another Thrashers game! Not re-signing Kovalchuk is unforgiveable!” In theory, those posters would return to Philips Arena, with Kovy back. Truthfully, I do believe the Thrashers home attendance, since losing Kovalchuk, has been noticeably less. Some of that is protect vs. ownership fielding a team at the league minimum. But some of it, let’s face it, are Kovy fans … trying to punish the Thrashers for not making the team an attractive one for a Kovalchuk re-signing.
Personally, I cut the cord long ago. With no hard feelings. I can’t blame the guy for leaving, or refusing to re-sign at ANY price. The way I see things, Kovy will actually finish his career in NJ, unless both sides feel a trade somewhere else would be for the best. And that somewhere else … will not likely be Atlanta.

Kubina was only here for a short time (one season) and it was a tumultuous season at that, with the Kovy BS going on. He still had a house and family in TB which = overpaying to keep him in Atlanta. MacArthur will probably outscore Thorburn and Stewart combined unless Thorburn ups his game quite a bit. The coaches, both in the Anderson and Dud/Ramsay camps, keep saying he can do it so I remain hopeful that more Thorburn minutes will equal considerably more points.

OK gang…big game against the Sabres tonight. Looking forward to seeing ya’ll down at Philips.
As you’ve already heard, Opie will be back with the Thrashers…which is great news. And with that, I’ll be keeping a special eye on the activity in front of Atlanta’s goal on both night’s this weekend.

I doubt Kubina was going to stay here, even if Atlatna offered over $4 million-per-year, for all three years. I think his heart was in TB. He has a house there. He won his Cup there. He knew, when he got traded here, that it was a one-year stint. Barring the Thrashers knocking on the door of the Cup, Kubina was gone.
Alan R., the Thrashers did make him a $101 million offer. If they didn’t want the player, why make the offer?
