Thrashers players prepare for class as training camp opens

Wake up Thrasherville, I think I got something to say to you. It’s late September and…sing it with me… I really should be back at school.

Well…OK, maybe not me. Long gone are my days at Schmartazz University where as a young skull-full-of-mush I studied underwater fire prevention and was a proud member of the fraternity Ata Mun Pi.

Like so many of you, I learned so many life lessons on and just off campus. Among them, just what it is a lady wants in life…security. Yes, security is what women want. Or at least that’s what they would scream for anytime I approached one at an off-campus bar…”SECURITY!”

Uh-huh, blonde, brunet, red head…I don’t want to brag, but I was turned away by some of the best looking girls around. Just sayin’…

But while those days are just hazy memories for me now, we find ourselves again at that time of year when many youngsters gear up to begin their experience at institutions of higher learning. Some will be off to the campus of a major university and some off to a technical school.

And then there is the select group of young men preparing for a course in Advance Placement Ice Hockey at the Duluth campus of Thrasherville U. There, they will find Craig Ramsay waiting to school them in his way of playing the game. He’s made it clear that his main job here is to teach these players how to deal with situations on the ice and instill in them the skills required to properly perform their duties.

These skills are both of the physical variety as well as the cerebral.

For some, however, one brutal lesson that may be taught is the basic truth that, just as in life, sometimes hockey ain’t fair. In this instance, there is a good number of fine, outstanding young talent that will be on display during this 2010 training camp…numbers that, unfortunately, far exceed spots on the roster. This means that there’s certain to be a several who will fall just short of the cut.

I was thinking about those players Thursday as I was watching the final rookie 4 on 4 game. There were a few out there that are really exciting to watch and maybe…just maybe…they would have made some Thrashers teams of years past. But this fall, well…

For instance, take into account the following prospects: Patrice Cormier…Alex Burmistrov…Arturs Kulda…Spencer Machacek…Fredrik Pettersson…Paul Postma…Andrei Zubarev…and Angelo Esposito.

I’m sure there is an argument that can be made in favor of any one or group of these players making the team. However, there is enough quality on this team’s payroll already that could possibly keep most, if not all, of these guys down on the farm.

This is especially true on the blueline. With Dustin Byfuglien making the transition back to defense, one could imagine the Thrashers breaking camp with Hainsey, Oduya, Buff, Enstrom, Sopel, Bogosian and Valabikas Atlanta’s defensive corps. Maybe even Freddy Meyers steals a spot…shrugs…who knows?

Either way, this would keep a very strong candidate like Kulda on the outside looking in.

Up front, conventional wisdom would have such players as Antropov, Bergfors, Little, Peverley, Kane, Slater, Ladd, Eager, Thorburn and Boulton taking up ten forward line spots. Add in Freddy Modin, Patrick Rissmiller as well as Nigel Dawes, and the fight could narrow down to one last spot if the Thrashers opt to carry fourteen forwards. And that’s not even taking into account Enver Lisin who has been invited to camp on a professional tryout basis.

So as you can see, classes have filled up quick prior to the beginning of the semester.

All this prospect talent on campus naturally adds fuel to the belief that there could be a trade coming sometime between now and the dropping of the puck on October 8. For who and for what is anyone’s guess.

Patrice Cormier took a shot off the foot Thursday. X-ray results will come Friday (AJC/Phil Skinner)

Patrice Cormier played as good as advertised this week. But he took a shot off the foot Thursday. X-ray results will come Friday (AJC/Phil Skinner)

One could speculate that someone like Boris Valabik could be packaged with a prospect to bring in a top six forward… say on right wing. That would open up a spot for Kulda and help balance out Bergie, Kane and Ladd on the left side of our offensive lines. Maybe a trade for a center, moving Antropov out to the right wing could be in order.

Given either scenario, that would clear the path for Arturs Kulda to more easily make the squad.

I’ve felt all summer that Patrice Cormier was going to be on the team, and nothing during prospect camp or rookie camp caused me to reconsider that belief. But there’s some possible bad news for the 20-year old gritty forward. He took a shot off the foot in the closing minutes of the 4 on 4 rookie scrimmage Thursday while blocking a shot. He left the facility on crutches and X-ray results should be known sometime today.

How that turns out could have a lot to say about who breaks camp in a Thrashers jersey in about 20 days.

That’s right, just 20 days…and it all starts this weekend, Thrasherville. Training camp opens this weekend and the preseason begins Tuesday night. Three weeks from today is opening night.

Ah yes, it’s late September and I really should be back at…back at…well, back at Philips Arena.

I feel bad for Cormier because from all accounts it sounds like he had a great shot of making the opening day roster but even if he doesn’t start the season with the Thrashers I’m sure he’ll still make an impact on the team before the season’s over.

I agree that this is great news for Burmistrov, and I see him stepping up and taking advantage of the opportunity. This is how I see the Thrashers opening day roster as of right now but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see another move or two before the season starts.

What is all this mumbo jumbo talk of a curse? What are we the Cubs? Curses don’t exist.

Cormier is guilty of the same offense on more than one occasion and I won’t defend him for his unsportsmanlike conduct. Very poor judgement! I do believe he should pay some sort of pennance,

However, here in Atlanta, he should be on a short leash, but given a clean slate to work with. Until he proves otherwise, we should move forth as if he’s learned his lesson.

Pucks on the ice, baby!

Good skating this morning. Boults getting feisty. Bogo totally missing a check on Kane. But taking out Lisin beforehand. Buff looked good. Pevs looked better. Little and Pettersson skating like water bugs.
Thoroughly enjoyable…

Joe Friday /Red Light / Rawhide, if it’s true that 34-year old Chris Mason is only an equivalent, and not an upgrade, to Moose Hedberg, then should the Thrashers shoot a phone call to the agent of Jose Theodore, who remains un-signed, per capgeek.com? http://capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=30

I trust Craig Ramsay, perhaps moreso than any previous Thrashers coach, to develop a good strategy for the team this year. But if Atlanta gives up 220 goals against this year, that’s a team GAA of 2.68. That shaves off 36 goals from last year’s 256, which was a GAA of 3.12. I see the Thrashers winning their games, this season, by the score of 2-1, or 3-2, etc., whether in regulation time, overtime, or shootout. Moose gave us a GIFT of a season, last year. I don’t think we could ask a 37-year old to replicate that for us this year. Chris Mason turned 34 on August 31st. Jose Theodore just turned 34 on September 13th. Theodore didn’t have a bad season last year, with a save percentage of .911 and GAA of 2.81. He’s played essentially 50 games for each of the past three seasons. I’m unclear as to why he hasn’t signed anywhere yet. He controls his decision about where to play, and for how much money, etc. Maybe he wants to wait for the season to start … then see what develops in terms of injuries, to contending teams? I have no idea, of his intentions, truthfully. But if young Pavelec, 23-years old, still isn’t ready to become the Thrashers # 1 goalie, though he’ll certainly get that chance to earn the starter’s role, then it might be worth checking out just what it’d take to put Theodore in Thrasher blue. Assuming he’d return the phone call. Last year’s salary for Theodore was $4.5 million. I don’t suspect it would cost that much this year, to acquire him. The Thrashers have lots of cap space. I cannot recall if Pavelec would have to clear waivers to be re-assigned to Chicago. Any know, for sure?

Umm, Trixie? I didn’t mean to bold that 2nd paragraph. Any of it, really. I thought I closed that bold font before linking the website. If you could be so kind as to un-bold it for me, I’d appreciate it.

Rawhide, did you make it out to training camp today? If so, how did our boys look?

Brendan-only if he has his “rogaine” am I interested in Theodore. There’s several reasons he’s still unsigned.

Trixie, looks good!

I see that Marc Staal got a 5-year deal, for a cap hit of $3.975 million. Not too bad. I see that Bobby Ryan recently inked a 5-year deal, for a cap hit of $5.1 million. A few team just pounded their fists on the table.

Former L.A. King Patrick O’Sullivan recently signed with the Carolina Hurricanes for the paltry sum of $600,000. Hmmn. We were even “in” on that bidding? Good for Carolina. That might be a nice pickup for them.

Paul Mara, 31 year old defenseman, just signed with Anaheim, for $1.675 million. Mara is a bit well traveled now, throughout the league.

Tony C., Theodore didn’t have a bad year. His playoff numbers don’t look great. But any team thin in net, looking for some experience, to help out with their regular season production wouldn’t do too badly to at least kick the tires for an asking price. If it’s sticker shock, you walk away.

Brendan– Interesting idea. However, I would be willing to bet money that that scenario wouldn’t happen, even if Pavelec regresses at all or fails to meet expectations. If he does, Mason will just play more games.

Mikey – Yes I did make it out there. Here are a few thoughts on the first day of traing camp.
