Hey Thrasherville, It’s five o’clock somewhere so…

At 5:00 this afternoon, so we’ve been told, we’re finally going to hear from the league office regarding the latest chapter of this summer’s saga, “As The Kovalchuk Turns”. If the revamped contract is accepted, then it will all finally come to a merciful end. If not, it will just seem like another one of the Thousand Steps To Nowhere in this drawn out fiasco.

Why was there a delay in the announcement? Well, to hear Larry Brooks of the New York Post tell it, it’s because the NHL has given the players union somewhat of an ultimatum. They’ll agree to “grandfather” in the contracts of not only Kovalchuk, but also those of Roberto Luongo and Marian Hossa. Both Luongo and Hossa will be entering into the second season under their deals. In return, the league wants to amend the current CBA to change how salaries affect the cap, specifically for those that take the player past the age of 40.

If the NHLPA refuses to show An Attitude Of Gratitude and rejects the offer, then the league return the favor by not only rejecting Kovy’s contract, but they’ll also move to devoid Luongo’s and begin a formal investigation of Hossa’s.

For What It’s Worth, there have been reports that the NHLPA denies any such ultimatum was given to them. As Puck Daddy’s Greg Wyshynski puts it…”Ah, the subtle nuance between “ultimatum’ and ‘strongly suggested’. We saw it every week on ‘The Sopranos’”.

Well, it is New Jersey, after all.

Whichever way it is, when 5:00 rolls around we’ll know.

Maybe…

Hopefully…

We’ll see…

But ya know what else happens at 5:00 pm today? Millions of Americans will spew forth from their places of work to begin their long Labor Day weekend…the traditional end of the summer vacation season.

But heck, as the old song goes, it’s Five O’clock Somewhere, so I say…unlike the NHL in regards to Kovy’s contract decision… why wait? Why not just go on and kick this holiday weekend off right now. Your License To Chill is officially activated now, so feel free to turn Thrasherville into Margaritaville. Just be careful not to step on any pop-tops.

Go on…have a good time. After all, if we couldn’t laugh we would all go insane.

Many will use this long weekend to visit family or just sneak in one last one last trip to the beach before autumn chills the air. Others will stay home and finish off the summer season with a nice backyard grilling sessions, enjoying a Cheeseburger In Paradise. And I’m sure some will be dealing with some sort of Honey Do list, given you have an extra weekend day to finish whatever project(s) she has you working on.

More than a few, I’m sure, will spend the weekend performing their own brand of Barstool Boogie starting tonight, will continue Defying Gravity through Saturday and into Sunday, then Come Monday…well, it’ll be alright. If you choose to indulge at a public establishment, I certainly hope you don’t wind up in a place with 10,000 Seats And One Bathroom.

Regardless, let’s just make sure that you don’t withdrawal too much from your Bank Of Bad Habits. If you do feel that you have A Lot To Drink About, please be responsible. Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy…but also be safe.

Now, for those of you who may be heading towards the Coast Of Carolina, or even further to the northeast, be aware that Earl is already in the process of creating some havoc there. You could find yourself Surfing In A Hurricane.

If you're making a last run to the beach, drive safely and have a great Labor Day weekend. Remember the sunscreen thought

If you're making a last run to the beach, drive safely and have a great Labor Day weekend. Remember the sunscreen thought

Around Thrasherville however, I don’t think the weekend forecast includes even A Little Bit Of Rain.

If your heading the opposite way…say to south Florida to check out all of the Beautiful Swimmers…things should be better as you visit your cousins down there. I mean, Everybody’s Got A Cousin In Miami, right?

I’ll leave this blog current for the weekend’s discussion of Thrashers hockey and all things Kovy. But don’t worry, you won’t be Abandoned On Tuesday as I’ll be back with a new entry. Until then… wherever it is you may go to acquire your Changes In Attitudes – Changes In Latitudes, I hope you all have a great Labor Day weekend.

Well at least the slogan isn’t “Lets Get Physical”, then again the new generation may not get the joke.

Kind of like when I yelled at a 22 to 25 year old Pittsburgh fan last season, the idiot said the game over. I retorted “Over, over, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, hell no?”

The idiot kid yells back, “Stupid, the Germans didn’t bomb Pearl Harbor..

In the words of Ron White, “You can’t fix stupid.” Ron White should know.

TSN just started their 30 Teams in 30 Days Power Rankings segment… Oilers start it off at #40.

Care to guess where the Thrashers end up?… I’m going to say #17.

Red Light, of the new Tampa guys you names, the only 2 I like are Ellis and Kubina. Gagne is old and injury-prone, on a one year deal then he is off to somewhere else. Bergie couldn’t mae it in Lond Island. The Bolts still have a crappy defense. Vinny is looking very old these days and he is not, along with the elephant contract of his. Bolts have to find some way to resign Stamkos too. I like St. Louis, but he is getting long in the tooth too, to be an imoact player.

R/L – every year Tampa’s the most improved and they haven’t finished worth a damn since 2007. Just like us. We’ll see.

Mason = Ellis

Sopel = Kubina

Gagne > Byfuglien

Ladd > Moore

Clark > Meyers???

Bergenheim > Eager

Ohlund’s getting older, but that’s a very solid top 2 with Hedman. Kubina makes for a very good 2nd pairing, but will he tire down the stretch like he did here in ATL? His body doesn’t seem to hold up. I like our depth on the blueline better than theirs. They have the edge in scoring most likely, but we don’t know how big a jump Kane, Little, Buf and hopefully Little will enjoy in their numbers playing more mins.

Goaltending is a push I thnk. Who’s the better coach? I’m leaning towards Ramsay as he has NHL experience. But we’ll see. Should be very interesting. TBL and ATL should be battling it out for 2nd and the 8th playoff seed in my estimation.

I have a dream, a dream where Canadas teams situate the bottom 3 spots in each division – a dream where we start rumors about more Canadian clubs relocating to New Orleans, OKC and (just to really tick Canada off) Oakland – Since they already have the Raiders, how about the Oakland Looters, or (since the city has pot dispensaries and state funded growers) the Oakland Smokies. Attendance may not be the best there, but I’m pretty sure the concessions sold would be top notch!
In all seriousness though, I hate the typical Canadian response to our Thrashers and pretty much any team south of Pennsylvania. The people are nice, the cities are beautiful, but the hockey fans are the biggest jerks I have ever met. Hopefully this season puts them in their place :)

Dudley is trying to sign Bergfors to a long term contract. It’s isn’t as much about money as it is about the length. I was told that the Thrashers want to lock down Bergie for 3-5 years. Bergfors wants more money if he signs a longer contract. He will signed the long contract if gets the money he wants towards the end of his contract. He will take less money for a 1 or 2 year contract. Duds thinks that Bergie needs to prove himself before he gets the big money towards the end. That is the problem. They have to meet somewhere in the middle.

I love Ron White. Red Light reminds me of Ron White–the scotch, cig, and witty droll one liners part, not the stupid part, but you keep sniffin’ Yzerman’s jock and I may have to reconsider that!

Soma-I thought it up when I saw that article of the 2 sheep caught on the ledge under the bridge.

JF-Ron White is clearly the funniest of the 4 Blue Color guys. His story about the NYC judge is classic.

Flames I was thinking term was the holdup with Bergfors and it makes sense. Pay the may to lock him down for 3-5 years.

Five_hole – I was born in STL, but moved a loooooong time ago when I was just 5. I’ve been in Atlanta since 1976. This is home to me.

I read Eklund just to know what is NOT going to happen. Anyone can make a bunch of random predictions – eventually something will fall into place. I mean really – a few days ago he predicted that both the Oilers and Leafs will make the playoffs. I’d bet a sizeable hunk of change he goes 0 fer 2 there! He’s wrong almost as much as Kypreos!

Thanks Flames for the info. Duds needs to consult an economist instead of Don Waddell when negotiating with Bergfors’ agent. If you want term to lock him up into his UFA years, ya gotta pay more. Not only does the time value of money make the price go up, but if you are high enough on a kid to lock him up LT, then you must put your money where your mouth is…or in the ASG’s case, put your mouth where your a$$ is and pull some of the loot out of your tight collective butt!
