How big of a splash will Dudley make in UFA talent pool?

It’s been a busy week or so in Thrasherville. Big trade with Chicago…followed by Craig Ramsay being named new head coach…the NHL entry draft…RFA qualifying offers…then all the chatter throughout the week regarding UFAs and RFAs contracts.

Yup, very busy indeed. That, plus it’s been extremely hot and humid around these parts as well. So it’s the perfect time to have a pool party…the annual UFA “Talent Pool” party, that is.

That’s right, kids…today we make our yearly mid-summer trek to take a dip in the cool water of the NHL community talent pool. But for the first time in the Thrashers’ history, Don Waddell will not be the one looking to fish out UFAs from the pool…instead it’ll be new GM Rick Dudley.

The question is… just how big of a splash does he intends to make?

Here on the deck surrounding the pool, our good friend Five_Hole has once again agreed to DJ today’s extravaganza while the lovely Joyel from TJ’s Bar & Grill will be serving up drinks behind the bar. Also for those who might, shall we say, overindulge…Tony C. will be proving cab rides back home.

And the best part… it’s all on the AJC’s tab!!

Now…Dudley has indicated that he’d like to snag a 15-plus goal scorer this summer and there are a few to choose from today. But if he’s not able to pluck out such a player from the pool, he’s also said that a trade could be on the horizon to procure one.

But for me, the top priority is finding a #1 goalie for the upcoming season. Dudley has told us that he’s “comfortable” with having Johan Hedberg return…however, the veteran Swede netminder does not seem to be “comfortable” with the terms and conditions of the contract that was extended to him.

The one I would most like to see Dudley & Co. snag is Evgeni Nabokov, who was informed just last week that he will not be factoring into San Jose’s future plans. I’m sure he will be the prize target for those looking to upgrade between the pipes.

The All-Star is netminder is 293-178 with 29 ties and 37 OTLs. He owns a 2.39 GAA, .912 SV% and has posted 50 shutouts in his 563 total regular season games played…all with the Sharks. In the playoffs he is 40-39 with a 2.29 GAA, .914 SV% and 7 SO during San Jose’s nine playoff appearances since 2000.

Nabokov is coming off a four-year deal that paid approximately $21.5 million.

What type of splash will Rick Dudley make in the UFA talent pool?

  • Cannon Ball - Big splash with huge signing or two (26%, 22 Votes)
  • Like Platform Diving - Dives in but no big splash (53%, 46 Votes)
  • Belly Flop - Not pretty and it'll hurt just to watch (21%, 18 Votes)

Total Voters: 86

Around the rest of the NHL, Ilya Kovalchuk looks to be the big free agent fish in this year’s UFA talent pool. Joining the long list of superstars who have done so in the past, the Russian winger departed Atlanta last winter for New Jersey but now gets to select where he’s heading next. Could it be the L.A. Kings, Toronto, another NHL team…or even back home to play in the KHL?

Keep in mind he turned aside an offer by Don Waddell last winter that would have paid him $10 million as season for three, five or seven years. He also said “nyet” to a 12-year deal that was worth $101 mil. It’ll be curious to see what he gets elsewhere.

Oh, and for those of you who still clutch to the hope that Kovy might return here…don’t hold your breath. Well, unless you’re swimming underwater, that is. Sure I’m trained in First Aid and CPR, but I really don’t want to be bother with such things today.

I thank you in advance for your understanding.

One last note before we crash the pool and join in the fun… I will once again warn each and every one of you that a repeat the infamous “Baby Ruth Bar Incident of 2008” will not be tolerated!

Yes, I’m looking at you, Smoothie…

It takes a lot of time and expense to drain, clean, disinfect and re-fill these things, ya know.

Free agency seems to be the one card, or at least the best card, that players have to improve their earnings. Most have been holding those cards pretty close. However today is the day that all those cards get played.

Like Rawhide I hope the Thrashers are not only playing, but win a hand or two.

Second that we go hard and heavy for Nabokov. He won’t come cheap, but we have the cap room. At this stage of his career, Pavelic is not a #1 goalie, and as much as I like the Moose, he’s 38. Nabokov is 34, and should still have some gas left in the tank. My second choice would be Chris Mason.

Before you put too much stock into anything Tweeted, let me hearken you back to the pre-draft nonsense that had everyone stirring and there were how many deals executed? It’s all speculation and it’s not like Dudley is text messaging all writers telling them what he’s up to. Look for guys who use the words “confirmed” or “done” in the right context. Not, “I can confirm the Thrashers are interested in blah, blah, blah.” How would they know?

That being said, the most reliable in my mind are: Custance, Michael Russo, Mirtle, McKenzie, Dreger and C-Viv. Allen is excellent but what’s he really telling you above? Of course they’re going to make another run at Johan, Kubina, etc., It’s not shocking and it’s not newsworthy. Lebrun talks to a lot of people too, but he doesn’t know anything more than the guys listed above.

The most creditable reports are those that say: “Thrashers have signed” not “the Thrashers are interested”

glovesave29

I gotta disagree that Nabby’s still got “a lot in the tank” – he’s played 497 NHL games. That’s almost 50 per season. If he signs a 3 year deal, and keeps up that average – he will be 37 at the end of the contract with 647 games played. Moose is 38 and has played 293. Ellis is 30 and has played 110.

Based on the body of work…Nabokov wins hands down. But I am going to trust the brain trust of the Sharks. They chose not to resign him for a reason. Sure – you can say that about any player entering free agency. But this guy has been a lifer with the Sharks. Pehaps they see something we are not aware of. Unless there is a sizeable pay cut in store for Evgeni, I think the money is spent better elsewhere….Kubina and Ellis.

Valid points Red Light – in regards to Allen he clearly has an inside scoop with ATL. Someone here on the board said DW has used him for years as his weather balloon. Not sure about that but he definetly was the first to break the Kovy trade.

What I took from Allen’s tweet is that Duds/DW are making a last ditch effort to get Moose to sign and if not, a goalie becomes their number one objective for FA. To me that complicates matters for the Thrasher’s getting a decent forward as this FA is pretty weak and those guys are going to be gone within a few hours.

Of course a trade is an option and perhaps that’s where Ladd could fit in as I think he has 2 more years on his contract. Not positive who we would have to give up but I’m sure they would want Cormier.

Lew’s been losing at the track. So the price of Coke went up. Yeah, well … then you ain’t gettin’ no coke!

DWTOO, you’re on. C’mon kid. Take your time. Don’t do it.

Dr. Beeper said, “Oh well, it’s probably just a routine emergency.”

GaVaHokie: Andrew Ladd wouldn’t be too bad. He was a former high-end 1st round pick, I think by Carolina. He’d score us 16-20 goals. Think of him as the new Colby Armstrong.

WBF: I’d actually take a flyer on Henrik Tallinder. If the Swede wants out of Buffalo, I think he could be good here. If only we could move Ron Hainsey out, and replace his contract money. The pause you feel … is that Tallinder is 32 or 33. And Hainsey is several years younger.

Rawhide: I voted for a smooth dive, with little enough splash to influence the Olympic judges. And really, there is something to be said for not saddling a team with a Bobby Holik-like contract. Or Kovalchuk for $10 million a pop.

Joe Friday/WBF: To me, it doesn’t matter what Kovalchuk gets paid. The bottom line is … he won’t be playing here. I neither root for him to get the max nor to take a nice discount to play somewhere that’s in contention. I just wish Ilya Kovalchuk well, and hope that he finds what he’s looking for. And if it’s in the KHL, then that’s where it is. I’ll always love Kovy.

Ranallo: We were officially eliminated from the AJC contest yesterday, with our guesses of June 30, 2010, Atlanta Thrashers. Bob/Joe Friday and Frosty the Snowman, I believe, are still in the hunt with guesses of Washington and New York. I’d have to double-check that, but I don’t have my list handy. Rawhide has it. But anyone who guessed Atlanta prior to July 1, has been eliminated from the contest. I wonder if Kovy will be an L.A. King by the end of the day. If so, what PATIENCE on their part. As Sara once posted, the Los Angeles Kings have been ‘earmarking’ a spot for him for quite some time. If does make me wonder, as Glovesave29 and Joe Friday were recently discussing, if there isn’t tampering going on. I mean, how DOES a player decide, instantly, within an hour, anyway, about where he’ll spend the next 4-7 years of his life. Who makes decisions like that???

Red Light, we better get a goalie. I’m looking at Biron as something plausible. Boston may or may not want to unload Tim Thomas. That’s a hefty contract, even if it is a downward sliding one, in terms of payout. Thomas probably does need to get out of Boston to be the #1 goalie, again. Tuukka Rask had the best GAA last year. What bothers me about Rask is … he was still sitting on the board at #16 in the 2005 draft. I think he went 20th. Waddell said that he traded down so that he could find a goalie in the 2nd round. That goalie turned into Ondrej Pavelec. Waddell could have drafted both goalies, if he’d wanted, by passing on Alex Bourret. Enough of that.

I love the Moose, but it’s time to part ways. Carrying three (3) goalies is possible, but probably not the best scenario.

Kevin Allen is the main guy that’s in the know on the Thrashers. That is very bad news that they’re going after Moose again today, it means no Nabokov who is obviously the prize goalie to be had.

Sounds like we’ll add a forward via free agency, please let it be Frolov, sign Moose and Kubina is gone. Then we may make a trade. That is very bad news for the Hawks. By the way, Brian Burke stole Versteeg from the Hawks, nice deal on his part, we really could’ve used Versteeg here and we wouldn’t have had to give up nearly as much as we did for Buff and Sopel.

Rawhide, thanks for coming, we have a pool, we have a pond . . . ponds good for you.

Smoothie

A little funny to think Versteeg was actually a bit surprised he was actually traded. It’s not as though Chicago’s salary cap troubles weren’t widely reported. In fact, I even wrote a blog entry on it although my prediction of a $5.2 M penalty was off a bit. However, Mirtle’s estimate of $4.1 M may not be actual. Hawks are in “troubs-ville” when it comes to icing a full roster! Even if they bury Huet, but are they comfortable with Corey Crawford backing up Niemi?

After crunching some numbers in a spreadsheet, I have come up with a pretty good rough estimate of what the Blackhawks adjusted salary cap ceiling will be next season. The bottom line number is quite startling compared to the expected league-wide ceiling of $59,440,000 or so. Per my calcs, the adjusted figure for the Hawks will be only $54,216,000, a difference of nearly $5.25 M!! Here’s how I determined their cap penalty for next season:

Brendan-I have no issue with Tallinder at this point in his career. But I think he will be one of the overpaid guys today because he does not have one real aspect in his game that makes him stand out – kind of sounds like Ron Hainsey, doesn’t it? Here is Buffalo’s problem-Tallinder played so well with Myers last season, who is going to take his place and allow Myers to keep playing his game? That’s is how STUPID the Sabres are-other GMs are making moves today and Darcy Regier is playing pocket pool. Ironic in the sense that Buffalo supposedly is looking at Kubina. Sabres don’t need another right hand shot on defense.

Like you, I guess I wish Kovy the best. Just amazed how he “wanted” to be the man here, then turned down millions to facilitate a trade. I hope his next team realizes that when they sign him long term.

DeDominico = John Albert

Silly predictions…cuz I should know better!

Goalie – Ellis or Biron after Moose spurns our “take it our leave it” offer for Philly or NYR

D-man – I think we may make a run at Shaone Morrisonn and then opt for McKee or Pothier if he’s too expensive. Leopold may be a darkhorse.

Forward – either a trade for Ladd or after we acquire another D-man, we trade for a top-6 forward if the market is somewhat over-priced. Possible targets include Ponikarovsky, Fedotenko, Torres or Stephane Veilleux for PK depth and 4th line stability (if we make a trade)

glovesave29

Does it not seem silly that if a player is traded mid-contract, that the balace of what is owed count against the cap, and not the full amount of the contract – as much of it has already been fufilled? For example – Sheldon Souray (no, I dont want him) has a $5.4M cap hit, but a salary of $4.5M over the last two years of the contract. The front end of the contract was obviously loaded. So if Edmonton were to keep him, the $5.4M cap hit is fair. But if he were to be traded, makes more sense to have him be a $4.5M cap hit, as that is what he is due to be paid. Would certainly open up for more trades.

Hokie – if you ask me, the two prospects that should be off-limits are Klingberg and Postma. Even Machacek should be in play. We have enough flexibility to make up for his departure. Klingberg’s ceiling as a rugged, speedier version of Tomas Holmstrom is too high. To hell with Cormier, I hope Duds has been talking him up just to elevate his trade value. Do work Duds, do work!!

Oh yeah, I also think we re-sign Artyukhin before it’s all said and done. Shore up the 4th line to go with Thorburn at C if we do end up trading Patrice “hi-bows” Cormier.

I concur. Like I said, Brian Burke got a heck of a deal in that trade. I look for Burke to be active over the next few days as well. I would assume that the influence that Dudley is bringing to our lineup meant that Versteeg didn’t fit his mold of what he’s trying to turn the lineup into. Versteeg tends to be a bit of a floater, think of a Max type, and takes shifts off and doesn’t forecheck hard. I’d make a guess that Chicago talked to us about Versteeg but we just passed as we didn’t want the player.

My figure for Kovalchuk, and it’s a slightly educated guess, is an average salary of $7.95 million for eight seasons. Just a bit of food for thought: Bobby Ryan, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Joffrey Lupul and Ilya Kovalchuk playing in front of Jonas Hiller. They’ve got room to do it and even though coach Carlisle is much like Hitch, that’s a ton of primary and secondary scoring and they’ve got the cap room to make it happen, particularly if Ryan’s new contract is front loaded.

JF is right. It takes a long time to return all phone calls and iron out a complicated deal like Kovy’s. We’re not talking three years at $5.5 million like Gonchar’s. I’m sure Grossman’s head is spinning with Volchenkov, Hedberg and Kovalchuk this morning, the least of which is Hedberg’s deal, of course. Same thing goes with all free agents and their agents who are weighing numerous offers.

GS29 – Keep in mind that last year no UFA signings were made by the Thrashers on July 1…only the XLB/Kubina trade. Antropov was signed the next day.

Two summers ago we didn’t hear of Hainsey being signed until about 4:40 or so.

So if history tells us anything here…it’s don’t look for anything too quick from the Thrashers.

Will Turco be satisfied mentoring a younger goalie? He may have no choice as the market is over-saturated. Might St. Louis, having intimate knowledge of Turco’s abilities take a chance on him rather than pay Mason market value?

We have a lot of imports that played in the tougher conference, hopefully we finally will have a team with a true leader, NHL Caliber coach, decent goalie and players who are as smart as they are active while on the ice, all at the same time.
If the rest of the league wants to call us the Trashers still, then lets clean their clocks and leave them on the curb side for pickup! Lets adopt the nickname and use it against everyone else. Hopefully our “1991 Braves” moment starts this season :)

Man,..I’m a bit dizzy. So what gaps have we filled and who’s out there for the ones we haven’t.

Gaps: Mason in goal (or Pavs). We can debate if that filled the gap,…… but can we probably agree we aren’t in the running for another goalie.

That leaves a top 6 forward and a top 4 D-man to go. Would Frolov and Kubina make the rebuilding complete for next season?

Who else is still out there for forwards and d-men. Lee Stempchek (sp) & Volchenkov?

I’d like Iggy but that would have to be a trade. Does any team who signed someone for high $s today now need to drop salary via a trade?

Moose,…sorry to see you go,…I wish you the best. Marty’s back-up may be the most unknown name in the NHL. Hope to see you back here some day in coaching or mgmt.

Well, looks like the D-men got the longterm deals today. Six years went to Hamhuis (Vancouver, from Pittsburgh, through Philly and Nashville) and Volchenkov (New Jersey, formerly of Ottawa). Paul Martin (formerly of NJ) got a 5-year deal from the Penguins ($25 million/$5.0 cap hit), and Zybnek Michael got a 5-year deal from the Penguins, too ($20 million, $4.0 cap hit).

Derek Morris, D-man, got a 4-year deal to stay in Phoenix. The deal pays him $11 million, for a cap hit of $2.75M. Phoenix also got Ray Whitney for $3 million-a-year, for 2 years. It’s NICE to see Phoenix being a UFA participant. It shows there’s hope for them. If they’d just thrown games to LA and Nashville down the stretch last year, they wouldn’t have had to face Detroit in the opening round. Bygones.

WBF, Smoothie, Tom, Spud Webb, Tallinder went to NJ on a 4-year deal, worth $13.5 million, for a cap hit of #3.375 million. Thoughts? Also, “turnover” Tony Lydman got Anaheim to pay him $9.0 million over 3-years, for a $3.0 million cap hit. Good for both of them. I wish them both well in NJ and Anaheim.

Red Light: What the HECK up with Sather giving Boogaard a 4-year deal?! The cap hit is okay, at $1.625 million, but c’mon. What’s he done to deserve this kind of longevity? That’s our boy, Sather.

Calgary: No, I’m just not going to go there. I think they’d clamor for Waddell, at this point. Hey, I’ve always like Tanguay. But I just can’t help but feel he’s on the back 9. At $1.7 million, I guess it’s forgiveable.

Niittymaki to San Jose. That’s no substitute for Nabakov for them. But I was kinda hoping we’d be in that hunt. I thought we had some shot at Biron, who went for the paltry sum of $1.75 million-per-year to the NY Rangers. He doesn’t have to move, apparently. He hasn’t left the State of New York, if you count his Buffalo days. (He must love those Clinton taxes!)

So, we got Chris Mason for $1.85 million-per-annum. Not bad. It’s a 2-year deal. We could move it, if it doesn’t go particularly well.

Vancouver: Looks like they’re trying very hard to push past Detroit and Chicago out West. Malhotra signed a 3-year deal there. I guess Manny doesn’t feel like the Sharks are the pony to bet on, out west.

Andrew Ladd: Well, I wished we didn’t have to surrender our 2nd round pick in 2011, but hey, all things considered, I’m not shocked this guy is here. GaVaHokie and I were just discussing the possibility of him coming over and replacing Colby Armstrong’s production, and then some. Didn’t we offer Colby Armstrong $3 million-a-year to stay here? That’s the deal he took in Toronto? Maybe the Buds offered him that 3rd year at that price, and that sealed the deal for Army?? I don’t know, truthfully. I’m not going to cry over Army. Andrew Ladd went 4th overall, I believe, in his draft year. So, figuring that Lehtonen went 2nd overall in his draft year, this is nearly a wash, in terms of draft position.

I’m liking our team for next year, but the defense is not set. We need Kubina, or someone capable of performing like Kubina. And if Pavelec is squawking about his contract, then we can always trade him. But can we get equal value?? What goalies are still out there? I know some teams have high dollar goaltenders they that could deal. Chicago has Huet. Boston has Tim Thomas. Did Jose Theodore sign anywhere yet?

I just dove into the cement pond……where’s all the water? There’s nothing left in here except some guy named Kovy. This Kovy guy keeps telling me I should have “tested” the water before I dove in.

Glovesave29, I notice that Dallas picked up some Kari Lehtonen insurance in the form of Andrew Raycroft, the former Calder Trophy winner. I really hope Kari can have a decent career in Dallas. Will they get him that goaltender coach? And a conditioning coach? And a nutritionist? And a shrink?

On my way home from work I heard the guys on XM’s NHL channel talking about ole #17 and how by his waiting 6 months he’s lost “AT LEAST $30 Million” and kind’ve made Kovy sound like an idiot for not sticking with the Thrashers… I’ll admit, it was nice to hear.

Okay, posters. How far away are O’Dell, Holzapfel, and Machacek from making the Thrashers roster? Let’s toss out Klingberg, too? Heck, will Burmistrov be here longer than a 9-game audition?

Brendan, how hard do you think they want to work to make the squad? If they feel that this years team is going to go places they will be working their butts off to be part of it. I think Ramsay may have a hard time making cuts when necessary to trim the roster down.

Somaatl95, is Kovy an idiot, though, if his next team is a lot closer to winning the Cup than Atlanta? Remember 2008, when we were bidding on Brian Campbell? Well, many posters thought, “Chicago isn’t exactly a model of efficiency, Cupless since 1961.” Several of us countered, “But can you say that the Blackhawks are much farther than 3 years away from a Cup?” Turns out, they were only 2 years away. Well, then Campbell (and his agent) chose wisely. Kovy is probably looking for a Cup moreso than a payday. I wouldn’t be totally shocked to see him sign some 1-year deal to get with a team he thinks can win next season, so long as that team can swing his “discounted” contract.

Does Detroit have ANNNNY room? Can you even imagine Kovalchuk as a Red Wing? They would probably embrace him well in Detroit! Of course, I think Kovalchuk is a natural fit in Los Angeles.

I really believe that Burmistrov is the Anti-Kovy. I really like this kid’s attitude and demeanor. Would not be shocked to see Ramsay give him every chance to make the club. That says alot for an ole coot like me! Duds has made it well known that he is sky high on Cormier and Klingberg. The others would be longshots.

I forgot to add the name, Tim Stapleton, as part of the Exelby and Colin Stuart trade. Also, I mistakenly listed Zbynek Michalek as Zybnek Michael, in my novel above.

Hokey P. Clisters, well … ya know … even Jeff Schultz would say that “raiding the Stanley Cup Champions isn’t a bad idea. As opposed to say, raiding the Columbus Blue Jackets.”

Ty Webb says, “Cannonball it!!” Hope the pool party was a ragin’ success.

I think Ramsey will give Cormier and Burmistrov every chance to make the club out of training camp…….we should get a better feel for Burmistrov after he gets a look at prospect camp.

So what might we have now…up front

Byfuglien Peverley Kane
Bergfors Antropov Little
MacArthur Machachek Ladd
Eager Slater Thorburn
(White, Burmistrov, and Cormier)

Maybe Cormier, Machacek and Ladd form a future “league’s best shutdown line”….I like that idea.
