Torchetti close to being officially named new Thrashers coach?

Is Thrasherville close to getting it’s new head coach? Well, according to Andy Strickland… who covers the St. Louis Blues over at Hockeybuzz.com… the answer is ‘yes”.

Strickland tweeted last night that the Thrashers and Torchetti are close to a deal that would bring the Blackhawks assistant coach to Atlanta to fill the head coaching here. He cited that a close friend of Torchetti told him that a “deal is all but signed”.

To be honest, I raised an eyebrow when I learned of this “twitter rumor” given that I haven’t heard or read anything about the two parties even meeting yet. It was only recently revealed that the Thrashers received official permission by the Blackhawks to talk to Torchetti about the job.

But if this is true, then the timing of any announcement could coincide with the NHL entry draft this weekend…something Don Waddell and the Thrashers wanted to do two summers ago when they announced John Anderson would be the new head coach in Atlanta.

UPDATE: Chris Vivlamore says that the Thrashers have indeed spoken with Torchetti.

kracker – nice find. I highly doubt we’ll be that low on the payroll spectrum. I’m thinking no lower than $48 – 49 M for us.

$4 M bonus for Spezza!! For what? Just being on the roster? Who the hell came up with these deals for Heater and Spezza?? Not to mention all of the pizza they had to pay for when that line was lighting it up consistently a couple of years ago! ;-)

I’m almost certain Bryan Murray was responsible for all extensions to Healtey, Spezza, Alfredsson, Fisher and Kuba.

Here’s what Murray spent on five players…
$45 million for Heatley
$49 million for Spezza
$22.6 million for Alfie
$21 million for Fisher
$11.1 million for Kuba

Total: $148.7 million

Murray should run for a U.S. Congressional Seat or the Oval Office, since he does such a good job of spending someone else’s money that they haven’t earned yet.

37 minutes to schedule release. Back-to-back games on Oct. 8 at home vs. Washington and then in Tampa, followed by a West Coast swing. First homestand not until the 20th or so?

Hoping to avoid another 0-6 start!

Nice line about Rocky and Bullwinkle, Brendan! Can ya work in a reference to Frostbite Falls and Whatsamatta U?

Smoothie, I’m hoping for about $52M.

I wonder how the new owner search is going? And is Belkin still about $23M in arears on his share of the cash calls? I may have the amounts wrong but the last I saw was he owed approx. 25 and paid up 2 by order of the judge. My hope is that they find a good hockey fan owner with a lot of money and then buy out Belkin with his payoff being forgiving some or all of the money he owes. Something along those lines…

What’s up with another long roadie to end the season…again? They really don’t want ATL to make the playoffs eh? And I’m tired of this one home-game tease followed by two weeks of travel. Crap. And SportSouth probably won’t have their sh!#t together in time to televise the west coast games. Awesome. Why should I be a fan of this team?

I know this is totally off topic but is it just me or does the picture of Torchetti celebrating the cup win remind you of Robert Wuhl? Every time I see that pic I can’t help but think Arli$$.

Whoa, BlueSpark – that 4th line would be naaaaaaasty!! I hope we keep Bolts and hang on to Arty. That line might just happen!

Smoothie, it will be hard to build those early season home crowds again, with no homestand and likely very little SportsSouth coverage until November. On the bright side, I think the early road schedule helped us as a club last season. That last road trip of the season could be a tour-de-last playoff spot contenders…

Looks like I’ll make it to two openers, including Yotes-Red Wings in Phoenx on Oct 16 :) .

Also, sorry for the Huet panic yesterday – I meant Halak… I’ve gotten very rusty at posting…

BB – no worries…good to have you back on the blog!! I guess the loyal folks like us will have to be extra rowdy on 10/8!! Perhaps we can all congregate around Stroz and blow WSH away with some vuvuzela action!

Okay, since no one has posted it, here is a link to the tweet about the Panthers / B’s trade:

Needless to say, this may change Tallon’s strategy with the # 3 pick. Do they go after a forward like Connolly or Niederreiter now?

Jimbo on Gonchar-easy if you compare him to the turbs the Thrashers have had playing defense over the years.

Here at Frostbite Falls, we contemplate did Dudley Do-Right by Boris, by renewing Moose and Squirrel?

We go live, to Natasha, for comment. Natasha?

That’s probably the shortest and, not coincidentally, most amusing comment I’ve seen you post Brendan. Thanks for the laugh!
