So how are your playoff predictions coming along? Me…well, so far not so hot.
Wednesday night saw three road teams…Ottawa, Colorado and Philly…beat higher-seeded teams…Pittsburgh, San Jose and New Jersey. The one home team that won was the Coyotes over Detroit.
Last night, we saw Montreal down top-seeded Washington 3-2 in OT, Buffalo hold off the Bruins 2-1 behind Ryan Miller’s 38 saves and then Vancouver worked the late shift to finally do away with L.A. in overtime.
Oh, and that “Sedin to Sedin back to Sedin” goal that made it 2-1 Vancouver in the second period…nice.
All this means of course, is that after seven games played six teams I predicted to eventually advance to round-two are down 1 game to zip early on. Good thing I didn’t predict any sweeps, eh?

Regarless… if these first seven games are any indication of what’s to come, we should be in for some really great hockey viewing in the days ahead. Each one has been decided by a one-goal margin with two going beyond 60 minutes.
Tonight, Nashville and Chicago kick off their series while those who played Wednesday evening play their game twos.
Now… while we continue discussing the playoffs and Wednesday morning’s “Shakeup in Thrasherville”… let me take this opportunity to post up the 2010 Rawhide Blog Comment of the Year finalists and allow you to vote for the winner.
We have five comments to select from, each nominated as the season progressed. I’ve attach a link to the comment so that you can review them, refresh your memories and view them in the context they were meant.
The one netting the most of your votes will see it’s author win the ability to write their own blog that I’ll post here. That, plus I will reach deep down into the deep pockets of the expense account afforded me by the AJC and by the winner a cold beverage of their choice at a Thrashers game next season.
I know…I know…please try to govern your enthusiasm and conduct yourselves accordingly.
I will keep the ballot box open until 11:00 pm Sunday night April 18, 2010…this way the voting will take place as we enjoy what promises to be a fun weekend of hockey viewing.
And so, without any further ado…the nominees for you to vote on are as follows:
“Contract Rage” by World Be Free: This is a prime example of the quick wit and poingnet commentary that frequesnts this blog. It was posted by WBF last winter in response to a comment posted by Nikita.
Nikita-people are raging against Kovy and White for a variety of reasons. Kovy cause he doesn’t have a contract, White cause he does have a contract.
“Play Until It Hurts” by B. Thenet: This was posted just after the 8-1 pounding at the hands of the Washington Capitals and points to why certain players might not be motivated to play “until it hurts” in a very concise mannor.
The problems with the Thrashers are from the top down.
I cannot blame the coaches or players for being bad, they have been set up to fail with the poor job Don Waddell and his staff has done in assembling the team.
When your ownership sends the message they do not care about winning, by continuing to employ a management team that is on its 2nd attempt to build the team from the bottom up….and looks to be approaching attempt #3 once Kovalchuk is traded by Don Waddell for a handful of magic beans.
How as a player can you commit to playing until it hurts, when you know at the end of the day the organization does not reward hard work….but instead rewards failure and shoddy work ethics?
They say a good team plays for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back of it. Our best players play for the name on the back of their jerseys, because the name of the organization on the front is not worthy of the effort.

“Lindsey Vonn” by Brendan: Uh…umm…I think this one just speaks for itself.
Here’s your Lindsey Vonn link:
You can thank me later.
“Unleash the Futility” by Bob: This beauty was “unleashed” on us just after the 4-0 thumping at the paws of the Bruins which spelled the beginning of the end to the Thrashers’ playoff hopes. (BTW: “Bob” now goes by the handle “Joe Friday”).
“its time to start thinking about what the team needs to do to improve itself on the limited budget the owners are willing to lay out. What moves should be made?”
1)Get us a real GM. Until then we’re just fooling ourselves getting psyched up about this club. Unleash The Futility is more like it if they leave Waddell making the decisions
assuming they finally do the right thing and we get a good GM, there’s plenty of even self imposed cap space available to:
2)Sign a quality experienced UFA goalie or trade for one. No more projects learning on the job, no more head cases, no more trying to fit Moose into something he’s not (a day to day #1 goalie)
3)Sign a top line UFA LW (who’s available this summer?)
4)Sign a top line UFA RW (who’s available this summer?)
5)Re-sign Kubina
6)Bring in a good experienced NHL coach, Anderson has lost me (never really had me to begin with, from the first games I saw his rinky dink system, I never thought it was NHL material)
“The Sad Merry-Go-Round” by MB: Our final nominee penned this clever observation earlier in the month after Atlanta lost in Washington 2-1. (What is it about the Thrashers getting beat that brings out the high-quality comments?).
As you guys are twirling around the merry-go-round of potential line combinations, all that came to mind is how very sad it is that this is where we find our team after ten seasons and twelve first-round draft picks.
Like every other season, we STILL do not have enough talent among our forward corps, we STILL do not have a true (dependable) #1 goalie, and we apparently don’t have players in the pipeline able to take minutes away from the likes of Todd White and Chris Chelios (at 48 years old).
And our big hope is to back into the playoffs. Like I said, sad.
Happy voting and good luck to each of our nominees.

The Wile. E. Coyotes are super genuises. We are still using ACME as our draft/FA consultants. Let’s hope Dudley Do Right has the answers.

Things will be “different” for this next five-year plan…After all, just ask the Spirit (ownership) and some around here!
(See how utterly ridiculous that sounds? Yep.)

I hate to jump subjects, but here’s The Hockey News’ draft prediction for the Thrashers-
8. Atlanta – Mark Pysyk, D, Edmonton (WHL): Tobias Enstrom and Zach Bogosian are the present, but they’ll need reinforcements on the blueline. Pysyk is used to carrying a heavy load for an awful Oil Kings teams and he brings a little bit of everything to the table.

Broken record Sage. You need to change you name to Xerox.
Teams can CERTAINLY change perception of them with management changes. Except for a brief blip under Joe Torre in the early 1980’s the Braves had been loveable losers for 30 years. Those of us who grew up here remember buying tickets to AFCo stadium’s orange seats and moving down to the dark blues…ya didn’t even need to be stealthy about it. The ushers (who outnumbered the fans) didn’t care.
So the ownership of the Braves brought in a known commodity in John Schuerholz (Thrashers equivalent Rick Dudley…who knows). They realized they were mis-using a person in Bobby Cox as a GM and moved him back to the dugout (again – could this be similar to Waddell being made into just a numbers guy and not a hockey guy?) Now kids here think of the Braves as consistant winners. No team is relegated to always being an also-ran. Gotta start somewhere, and to me this is certainly a start.

WBF… I guess I’d be okay with that… I’d prefer to take Neidereiter if he’s still available, or even Etem. I’m really hoping Brett Connelly falls down the board.

GaVa-my Bills are at #9 this Thursday and Thrashers at #8 in June. Both teams’ fortunes could change based on what happens right in from of them in their respective drafts.
Sage-not sure if the Thrashers have a 5, 7 or 10 year plan. I hope Dudely’s “rep” will afford him the leeway to do what needs to be done to get this team in the right direction quickly. Just look at Phoenix; a core of good young players sprinkled with good veterans. I prefer the Nashville approach, drafting smartly over a long period of time. But we are where we are; hoping Dudley can move us forward.

Montreal hasn’t advanced past the 2nd round since winning their last Stanley Cup in 1993. Worse, is the fact that the Habs are just 13-23 at home since beating the Kings 4-1 in Game 5 of the Finals June 9, 1993, and are just 12-21 at the Bell Centre.

Will the Thrashers ever draft a true center? Kane and Little have both moved to the wing after they were drafted and the last center drafted that actually played much center was Slater. They need a playmaking center now, and have needed one for a decade. Go get one.

Ken “Alfred” Hitchcock!? Nooooooooooooooooooo! Unless it is Pierre LeBrun, who already predicted Torchetti I think, changing his mind, I don’t think you can rely on ESPN for any reliable hockey news. I would rely on Custance, LeBrun, Kevin Allen and Dreger for the scoops.
As for the Hockey News, they aren’t much better than ESPN. Why in the hell would the Thrashers draft another D-man who may or not be ready to step in and play? Not to mention that Kulda seems more than ready to assume a bottom pairing role. The Thrashers must draft more offense in the form of a large, fast, banging forward (ahem, Nino the Neidereiter!)The key is Bogosian’s ability to rebound from his sophomore campaign and elevate his game like Doughty has. In the meantime, Dudley would be wise to re-up Kubina for 2 or 3 years at a reasonable price.
And Red Light is right about our weakness down the middle. I’m not sure there is a suitable play-making C in the draft who will be available at # 8 in the first round. However, If Cormier is able to make the jump next fall, then you can let him play 3rd line C and keep Slater on the LW where he is more effective. Of course, Jimmah can always slide over and take a key face-off if Cormier gets bumped. Also, I think it would be prudent to make Little the RW on the 3rd line to help him revive his confidence in a different role in which there is less pressure to score.

Red Light-not sure one will be there when we pick at #8. Centers are getting tougher and tougher to find, the 2nd hardest position on the ice after goaltender.

Wow, the blog monster is really hungry this morning. Just typed a few responses to the boys’ comments this morning and both attempts (second one with a slightly different last sentence) were eaten by the blog filter monster. I didn’t even use a curse word! Damn it!
Trixie, would you be so kind as to release the 2nd one from the jaws of the blog monster…the first one can go down the gullet into the blog monster’s hungry belly! Thanks!

Perhaps that’s why the pick should be dealt or drop down a few spots to add another second round choice if the draft is as deep as Dudley said it is? The kid that centered Neidereiter, Johansen, is a late bloomer and is rangy and fast according to some articles I read. He was overlooked coming out of Bantam and grew a few inches up to 6-3.

glovesave – I remember those days. I remember my parents scoring free tickets to the upper deck in 1988, and moving down to the seats right behind the Braves dugout. I also remember this game.
It was hard to believe back then, and still hard to believe now, that we went “from worst to first” in just a year. The Braves became perennial contenders. They gained fans around the world. I know people in Norway and Germany who sport Braves gear and have asked about some of the players. While I’m nowhere near as big a baseball fan as I was (let’s be honest, people: Hockey is better), it’s fun to see people across the world support teams here in the US. Especially teams that are in the city you live in.

Red Light – good idea on Johansen as both Tampa and Carolina need help at wing and not center. Perhaps he will fall into our lap after TBL and CAR steal Nino and Connolly from us. I like the fact that Ryan is 6′ 3″ and 190 lbs…not to mention Ryan is a great hockey name!!

Smoothie-I agree, I will NEVER go to ESPN for any hockey coverage or predictions. Is that IDIOT Terry Frei still working there? We could all do a better job than that loser!
Blog monster ate 2 of my posts yesterday. Guess that was a good indicator that I should have been out doing yardwork.

If we’re lucky enough to get Neidereiter at wing with our 1st pick in the first round, perhaps a guy like Skinner might be worth trading up to get in the middle of the first? Morin’s teammate and set-up man presumably. Boston may be in a position to trade their middle round pick since they are facing some Cap issues. Plus, they will have the luxury of getting Hall or Seguin depending on who EDM takes.
How about our 2nd first rounder, Ivan Vishnevskiy and Clarke Mac for Tim Thomas, Dan Paille and their first rounder?
If Cormier and / or Machacek are ready, we don’t need MacArthur. And if we bring in a Frolov or Sharp, then we don’t need Little to play top 6 minutes and can slide him down to RW / C on the 3rd line to play with Slatesy and either Arty, Cormier or Spencer. Plus, Morin will be ready the following year mitigating the need for C-Mac further. I’d rather have Paille who plays a grittier game to augment our 4th line as I’m ready to say sianorah to Boulton and of course White (BUY HIM OUT IF YOU CAN’T TRADE HIM FOR A LATE PICK!).

Smoothie-not a bad suggestion, though MacArthur and Paille are about an even swap in themselves. Sabres got 4 decent draft choices this year for both of them.

WBF, I don’t think Dudley’s arrival here as GM “hurts” us in trying to land Free Agents. But, in the end, I think the players look to commitment from ownership to winning, before deciding where to play their PRIME years. If Dudley can reverse the culture of stimatism that playing in Atlanta seems to foster among UFAs, then I certainly welcome it!
