E-Day is upon Thrasherville

E-Day…elimination day…the day that the Thrashers could be officially eliminated from any and all playoff possibilities…is now upon us. Given the 3-2 overtime loss in Washington last night, the Bruins now sit with 85 points in the Eastern Conference.

What that means is this…if the Thrashers lose in regulation tonight against the Devils, the most they could hope to gain is 85 with wins in the last two games. That would eliminate them from finishing any higher than eighth in the east. However, if such a loss was combined with the Flyers winning or even gaining a single point in Toronto…that would be enough to mathematically eliminate Atlanta.

Now, for those of you still clinging to sort of hope that this playoff thingy can still happen for the Thrashers…and really, why are you doing this to yourself?… Yes, there is are still scenarios that Atlanta could squeeze into that eighth spot. But they mostly involve Atlanta winning all three games this week…you know, against the Devils and Penguins and Caps…oh my!

And then there is the fact that the Rangers and Flyers square off for two games this coming weekend to end the season. Assuming they split the pair in regulation, New York would have at least 84 points and Philadelphia would have at least 86.

Realistically speaking, however…the fat lady has moved from back-stage, is fully warmed up and ready to bellow out the final song for the Thrashers playoff hopes.

That being said, there are still some interesting things to follow as this Thrashers season wind down. Specifically….I would like to see Maxim Afinogenov improve on his newly-established career high in goals. Last Saturday he notched number 24. Max has 61 points on the season, so that’s not a bad return on the $800,000 investment made last summer.

Thrasherville may soon be seeing the last performance by Johan the "Magnificent Magical Moose" (AP Photo/John Bazemore)

Then there is the leading scorer on the team, Nic Antropov. His 24 goals are just two shy of his career high set in 2007-08. The 67 total points are already a new best for him. Also, he is a +16 for the year. If he can nurse that over the course of the last three games, it’ll set a new mark for him…he was a +14 in his rookie season back in 1999-00.

Rich Peverley has long since set career highs in goals and assists this year. But his is only 5 points away from 60 for the season. That would be a great achievement for The Pevs Dispenser.

Nic Bergfors is only six away from 50 points for the season. He has 8 goals and 9 assists in 24 games since the Thrashers traded for him in February and he’s a +1 in those games as well. As a Devil, he had 13 goals and 14 assists in 54 games.

Jim Slater is but 3 points from 20…which is his career high set back in 2005-06. His 11 goals are already a career best.

As for between the pipes…I want to see Ondrej Pavelec start the next two games. I’ve long been an advocate of “riding the Moose” this season, but given the circumstances, I would rather let the next “future number one” get as much time in as he can.

However… I want Hedberg in net Saturday. Given his contract situation, this could very well be the last time we see him in a Thrashers jersey and it would be a very nice tribute to him, allowing the fans to show their appreciation for his years of quality service and professionalism to this organization.

For that matter…I hope Slava Kozlov is also on the ice that night.

On the other side of the ice…New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur will be seeking career win number 600 tonight.

Given the snakebit nature of this franchise, I firmly believe it will be a Kovy goal that is the deciding margin and that eliminates the Thrash’s playoff hopes once and for all.

Kovy scores the game winner in OT, jumps into the glass, gives us all the finger as he skates off and blows Natalie Taylor off for a postgame interview, as she for some reason will still think he is on the team… that’s about how I see it going down tonight.

Glass is half empty for sure. Lost in all this is that this franchise under John Anderson’s leadership is 69-73-19, but this is the third-best season the Thrashers have ever had in terms of points.

I guess that’s like saying, “my girlfriend’s implants look great until she takes her top off.”

I agree that it would be nice that Slava has one more chance to take the ice for a franchise that he played 536 games for during the span of seven seasons. I think this year has made us all forget that he played in 532 of 542 games from the start of the 2002-03 season to Jan. 21, 2010. He had 20 game winners and is second in nearly every offensive category to Kovalchuk during his Thrashers career.

A sad ending if he doesn’t get to play, at least in Saturday’s meaningless finale.

If Butler can come within inches of winning a National Championship, I’m not ready to give up just yet. The fact that the Craps let Boston get an extra point last night wasn’t very nice. We obviously need to finish up 3-0-0 to get 87 points.

To pass Boston, they’d need to finish 0-2-1 (Buf, Car, @Wsh)
To pass Philly, they’d need to finish 1-2-0 (@Tor, @NYR, NYR)
To pass NYR, they’d need to finish 2-2-0 (@Buf, Tor, Phi, @Phi)

We need to pass 2 of those 3 teams. We need to become big Sabres/Maple Leaves fans for the next few days!!!!

We chased Marty earlier this season and still lost the game. I think Kovvy is deluding himself in thinking there will be no booing. You said in the press over and over again that you wanted to sign here…now the tune is, “It was time to move on….I gave 110% every game to this organization.” Um – no you didn’t. At least not in December when the organization needed you most.

I think the efforts of our team tonight and the next couple of games could really identify what kind of character is left in the room. Will the guys give in seeing as the playoffs are a slim hope? Or will they give everything to beat these high caliber teams knowing it will be too little, too late?

I love the fans here. On one hand most B!tch, moan, complain, talk trash about, and boo former players; and then on the other most B!tch, moan, complain, talk trash about not being able to keep players or what former plays say about the fans in Atlanta.

Hossa – Most of you wanted to keep him here and still b!tch about him going, but boo him everytime he returns. He was up front with the Front Office requesting a trade early in 2007 (before the 07-08 season started I beleive), and when he was not giving one he said he wanted to see where the team was headed. I see nothing wrong, but you boo him none the less.

Savard – Left for the Bruins because of personal issues supposely. One of the few Thrashers to have 90+ points. Most of you lump him in with elite players you wish were still here, but the boo birds have been out since he left.

The one I personally love is Sutton.. anyone remember by how much we won the division title by in 2007? Anyone remember who save the title for us, by saving a goal in OT against the Leafs? Also I love hearing people say “DId you see the way Sutton is playing for the Islanders (Sentors), much more physical than when he was here and he is fighting more. Where was that when he was here?” The answer is simple The Thrashers have a GM that thinks fighting is foolish and does not belong in the game of hockey and has TOLD the players (mostly d-men) not to fight.

The only former Thrasher that I HATE it Heatley for playing this city for a bunch of fools.

Now Ilya will be added to the list.. GREAT!! WAY TO GO ATLANTA.

No wonder we are trashed by former players… most of us are idiots!! and I love that the announcer is promoting that the fans boo Ilya.. way to go 96.1!!!

Does anyone stop to think for a minute if the fans of the New York Yankees would give any thought to this “do I boo” or “don’t I” crap? If a player left them when they thought he was giving them the shaft, they would boo him and everyone would just chalk it up to being a passionate New Yorker. Boo a returning player in Atlanta and you’re classless, you’re an idiot etc. Nice double standard. It’s a sport. When you feel jilted or pissed off, you boo. So what? Interesting read Red Light but I just don’t see it happening. If Kovy is truly looking for his last move (as he seemed to indicate before the trade) then I fully expect to see him with LA next season. The big thing for me is focusing on the future. Some of the Jersey fans are similar to Washington fans; they are in good times and forgetting the bad times. Kovy’s reasons for leaving have nothing to do with the city of Atlanta or its citizens. His reasons for leaving are more-hockey related, something for which we have no control.

The playoffs are gone, have been for over a week. We choose to talk about mathematic possibilities, but let’s face it, the best we could do was qualify for the playoffs. We had virtually no chance of advancing in the second season. Let’s get ready for the draft and hopefully the odd UFA or two.

Our greatest need is player retention. Our inability to retain players goes far beyond Kovy. We have a list of other players that decided to go elsewhere instead of re-upping here. This has to change, or it will not matter how GOOD we are at selecting players.

While I won’t be at the game in person, I am there in spirit. Hear the BOOOOing? That’s for you Kovalsuck, you bum. I never thought you had the heart to play real hockey and you showed that to the fans on a consistant basis. Easy fooling the fans here and getting away with it, I am sure you saw how easy it was watching DW and the ASG.
“but he scored a bunch of goals he is awesome! how can you say that?”
If he had the HEART, and the DESIRE, and the COMMITMENT, he would have used some of his speed to back check and kept the teams he was scoring against from scoring too. He wants to win without having to put forth the effort of leaving it on the ice. How many times have you seen him fall down, look to the ref for a call that wasn’t a penalty, then slowly get up and SLOWLY shuffle around while the other team went the other way and scored? Let Jersey have him, I’ll take Bergfors and Oduya hands down and say we got the better of that trade. Hockey is a TEAM sport, and until KovalSuck learns to work hard the whole game, AT BOTH ENDS OF THE RINK, he will earn nothing more than “he sure can shoot the puck”. No one here had the nerve to hold him ACCOUNTABLE (strange how that word keeps coming up in regards to this team isn’t it? I think they call that a clue) for his actions and he let not only this team down, but the FANS who cheered him on and bought his merchandise as well. So in answer to the cheer or boo question, I say cheer KOVALSUCK ARE THOSE FIGURE SKATES YOU”RE WEARING?

I believe it was back in 1995 or 96 that Mark Messier bolted from the Rangers for Vancouver. Upon his first game back in the Big Apple the Rangers organization played a 5-10 minute video more or less honoring him. I’m no Rangers fan but that was a very classy move.

Kovy left not because of the fans, his teammates, or Atlanta in general. The reason he left is upper mgmt, plain and simple. I don’t blame him. Who do you blame,…Kovy or ASG/DW?

His “1st class organization” comment hurt,…but was it untrue? I have to think that almost any organization (well maybe, 25 out of 30) looks pretty good when compared to ASG. And how would you charactorize Lou Lamarillo when compared to Waddell?

Finally, if Kovy ever said anything derogatory about Thrasher fans I missed it. Multiple times I did hear thanks, appreciation, and a desire on his part to do better for us.

Tonight the fans can show real class by applauding the person who holds virtually all Thrasher offensive records,…and brought out butts out of the seats more than anyone else.

That said,…Go Blue,..beat the Devils.

It’s a shame when a stinkin’ devils fan has to come here and speak the truth to the lunatic fringe.

As far as I know, Kovy has been a class act to this franchise, the city and the fans. He wants to win, and contend for the playoffs. He’s not going to do it here with a 3rd rate GM and organization that isn’t committed to winning hockey. He served his time here, and made many plays for the Thrashers…he made them fraking relevant.

What we have here is a case of jealousy, ungratefulness and bitterness. Direct it all toward Teflon Don and the Atlanta Spirit Group…Not Kovy. If the so called “fans” has the same level of passion when they boo Kovy tonight…directed toward Don and Co…maybe we’d get some change in ATL.

I refuse to give up on our Thrashers’ playoff hopes until the math absolutely forces me to do so. While it is true that I may have a feeling of impending doom, I can guarantee you that many of the Bruins, Flyers, and Rangers fans are feeling that very same sense of impending doom. Of the four teams on the bubble, the fans of two of those teams are going to have that sense of doom lifted when their team makes the playoffs. Why not us? Why can’t we be that team?

Does anyone else remember the end of last season? We spent the last several weeks of last season beating some of the best and brightest ‘08-’09 teams on the ice. As I recall it, we ruined one or two of their playoff hopes and dreams while we were at it. So I’ll ask again, why not this team?

The way I read the numbers, the Capitals have already been beaten 15 times this season, and the Devils and Penguins have already been beaten 26 times apiece this season, so obviously the Caps, Devils, and Pens are beatable. If they were not, I would absolutely concede and say we have no chance. However, since we know they can be and have been beaten and since we know that the score will be 0-0 when we skate onto the ice with each of them, then why not this team?

Yes, these final three games are going to be obnoxiously tough. Yes, we might not win all of them. We might not even win any of them. But then again, we just might. I choose not to believe that “tough” or “might not win” are good enough reasons to simply roll over and give up before we even take the ice.

I may not agree with the management, and I may not agree with the ownership. I am a Thrashers fan though, and as such, I will support our guys throughout this season, regardless of whether our season ends next week, next month, or (*fingers crossed*) two months from now. Sadly, I cannot be down at The Bulb tonight, but I can promise you that I will be sitting at home, eyes glued to the TV, heart in my throat, screaming and cheering my head off for our Boys in Blue.

Kovy is just another cowardly, overpaid athlete who hides behind an agent. I will boo him for his decision to leave when the chips were down and he exerted as much control over the situation as any player could ever hope to in his position. There was no real negotiation in my opinion. Not to say the ASG didn’t commit some degree of folly by waiting so long to start the negotiations in earnest. But none of us know how long or when Grossman started to ask for max contract. We’ll never know the real story unless Kovy signs his big deal and then tells all, but I’m sure he won’t. Russian players just don’t seem to roll that way. I won’t boo Kovy like I boo Hossa if he makes a long-term commitment to another team rather than chase the Cup like some sort of mercenary. Let’s see if his actions support his words or not in the months to come, but for one night, I see no reason to hold back and be “polite”, gracious hosts during the game tonite.

A word on Kovalchuk and then I’ll shut up…

I will not boo Kovalchuk – not today and not in the future. He is a very talented goal-scorer, and I wish him the best in his career. I do, however, happen to be glad that his career no longer includes the Thrashers. With our ownership and management problems, we never had a chance of attracting the type of players required to build the kind of team necessary to support a superstar. We had a big fish in a little pond and so he seemed all the bigger. I still do not believe Kovy would have stayed here, even if offered the max salary, because I think he knew he didn’t fit here and would never have the king of team here where he would fit. I do not believe he tanked on us though. True, he did often seem to half-heart his defensive efforts, but I think that was far less an effort issue and far more a pure-lack-of-defensive-talent issue. Think about it, when has Kovy ever shown any level of defensive prowess, either with us or with the Devils? Some superstars are good all over the ice. Kovy will never be one of those kinds of superstars, but he really is a very talented goal-scorer.

Hockey is a team sport, so success with the “everyone feed the big fish” mind-set will never work on anything resembling a consistent basis. I feel much better about our post-Kovalchuk Thrashers because we are far more of a cohesive team than I’ve ever known us to be. Of course, we still have work to do, but I am liking the kind of talent that we’ve been putting together lately. I like that we’ve got several guys who might just be considered “pretty good players” elsewhere because, here, those guys have the chance to be stars. I like seeing those guys go above and beyond where mere talent alone might take them in their quest to be stars. Here, we don’t have some superstar player that they can sit back and rely on to pull the team through when the going gets tough. Here, the responsibility lies on every single one of their shoulders, so here, every single one of them has to dig down deep if they want to deliver as a team when the going gets tough. Experiences like that are what builds teams. And teams are what win hockey games when mere talent alone falls short.

Goodbye Ilya Kovalchuk and fare thee well. I really do believe that you tried to be a good player for us while you were here, so thanks for the memories, no hard feelings, and good luck in your career. Oh, and don’t be too surprised when our team collectively whips your superstar behind!

Jeff-I think alotta people are angry because we are in the middle. We are in between players, management, agents and other factors we cannot control. Fans have a right to boo if they wish. I think everyone would feel better about Kovy had he just stepped forward early in the season and tell management he was not going to resign. Then the right decisions could have been made to accomodate a player that had aspirations that could not be fulfilled in Atlanta. The contract became a distraction. And remember, at the time he was the captain, the leader of the team.

The only way we as fans can control the situation is to stop coming. As a hockey fan, I am not ready to do that yet.

For my money, he is an Alexi Kovalev type player – scores more than him of course, but a difficult person to play with. What did he bring to Atlanta other than a bunch of scoring? Certainly not the type of leadership that forged a playoff ready team. He decided to leave for whatever reason that made sense to him. OK – but now he’s out of the family and I do not have an ounce of nostaglia for him. Go Thrashers and please crush the Devils.

Apples and Oranges HookyBob, but your points are solid.

Messier led the Rangers to their first Cup in 54 years. And, Messier didn’t want to leave New York, but was offered $20 million including incentives for three years by the Canucks. The Caps offered him $21 million for three years and the Wings offered $15 million for three years. Messier declined the Caps offer because they played in the same division as the Rangers at that time. Smith’s final offer was one year for $4.6 million. He was 36 at the time.

However, it’s not that the Thrashers will make the playoffs, but that I am very close to a correct guess at 83 points for the season. Bittersweet! See you there!

Kovalev isn’t difficult to play with, anything but. He simply lacks consistency and fire, but there is no comparison between the two except for the fact they are Russian. Kovalev is an enigma, Kovalchuk certainly is not.

Hell, YEAH, I’ll be booing Kovy (although, admittedly, from the safety of my TV); and I don’t care about the guilt trips that are being laid out today, nor the rantings of some twat troll from NJ. HE BAILED! Pure and simple; bailed on his own team that he captained. If he wanted to try another team—fine, but he had all of last summer to make that decision. I don’t care about the owners, or the management, or the coaches, or the size of the hotdogs in the concession stand—none of that matters once the puck is dropped. We are going to miss the playoffs by the width of a hair and that might not have been the case if Kovy hadn’t have spent his last month in Atlanta twirling on the ice. We all saw it; we all bitched about it.

I know, I know….there are many more factors determining our situation now besides Kovy. But since he is today’s topic then that’s the one I will concentrate on tonight.

WBF – at least we have the joy that comes with watching the Sabres get bounced from the playoffs this year unlike the last 2 seasons! ;-) j/k Actually, I wouldn’t mind seeing Miller give Washington a run for their money, but I don’t see how you keep the Caps out of the SCF.

My gut tells me Vancouver vs Washington for the Cup if Luongo can handle the strain of so many games and all the travel they’ve already endured. If they could somehow pass CHI and get home-ice at least thru the WCF, then I like their chances. Even still, Chicago has been quite enigmatic lately, but perhaps they are bored and ready to play games that really mean something.

I checked with Stats, Inc. and
Atlanta is eliminated with a loss.

Say we lose and Philly loses.

The only way we could catch Philly

would be for them to lose twice and

for us to win twice.

But if Philly loses twice to the Rangers,

New York jumps both Atlanta and

Philly to claim the last spot.

I can see Washington tearing apart the East. There’s not much here in the line of defensive structure.

Polanski, the Thrashers and Flyers have three games. The Rangers have four. Atlanta can still win out. Atlanta, however, basically has to win all three of theirs. Flyers have to lose all of theirs. Rangers just need to lose twice.

I wouldn’t get too over-confident as a 7 seed, or even a 6 seed, with Jimmy Howard carrying their Cup hopes.

No, of course you wouldn’t let a rookie 30+ game winner carry your cup hopes. :P

Howard is being mentioned as a possible nominee for the Calder and Vezina trophies He might not be a Brodeur or Hasek, but he’s a damn good goalie. After floundering for a little bit, he got his stride back in a major way. Coupled with the players returning from injury, and you have a very dangerous team on your hands.

The road still goes through Detroit, home ice advantage or not. Joel Quinneville has never won a playoff series against Detroit. He might do it this year, but Detroit isn’t going to make it easy on them.

Assuming, of course, that Chicago faces Detroit. They don’t want that, though. Chicago doesn’t want Detroit. Neither does Vancouver. Nor does San Jose. Nashville has faced Detroit quite a few times already, and the team and its fans, I’m sure, will never forget the pain of having the Winged Wheel run them over. Phoenix fans, at least, want Detroit. But they don’t. They really, really don’t. No one really wants Detroit.

There are a number of qualified GM types out there who could come in here and start to right the sinking ship ! What does it take for change in the GM chair ?

Why will the owners NOT react to the fans… Just mind boggling, Can you believe it ?

I don’t know if anyone already mentioned it, but I was going through the possible scenarios for tonight and I figured the Thrashers are eliminated with a regulation loss regardless of what anyone else does. Also, I believe they would be eliminated with an OT/SO loss coupled with a Rangers win. Typical d-bag behavior by Thrashers fans tonight by booing Kovalchuk. I’m sure you are the same retards who still yell “Knights” during the national anthem. Give it up, Stan Drulia and company left town 15 years ago for f–k’s sake! Now that we have been officially eliminated from the playoffs I will restate what I said before the season started. If the team does not make the playoffs Don Waddell needs to go. I do not have the venom for DW that some of you do, in fact I believe the man is a class act and has always treated me with respect and does have a genuine passion for the game, the city and the fans of Atlanta. Now, with that being said it is time for Don to resign! I also believe it is time for Don to fire John Anderson and then resign. Regardless of my personal feeling as to the quality of the man, it is time for a change. The organization, the players and the fans need a change and it is time, some will argue way past time. I do believe that DW is well respected within the NHL and we will never know what all he has had to deal with concerning the ownership group, but it is time to go. I wish you luck Don and best wishes, now do the right thing and take the coaching staff with you. I unlike some of the other posters will not continue to beat the drum, it gets old, but I hope I am not writing these same words next year.

Congratulations to the San Jose Sharks for winning their 5th division title in franchise history, including their 3rd in-a-row. Likewise, Congratulations to the Buffalo Sabres, whose 5-2 victory over the NY Rangers clinched the Northeast Division. Stop. Who saw that coming? Answering truthfully, I had Boston repeating this year, with Montreal in 2nd place, Buffalo in third place, Toronto in 4th place, and Ottawa, with Heatley, 5th in the NE, and DEAD LAST in the NHL. Boy, did Ottawa do well in that Heatley trade.

Washington has clinched the President’s Trophy for some time now. Of course, that means they’ve won the Southeast Division for the past three seasons. When the Capitals fired Glen Hanlon in 2008, in favor of Bruce Boudreau, they certainly reversed their fortunes.
