It’s another Sunday morning in Thrasherville…and things have definately taken a turn for the better since the last Sunday Thrasherville Times was delivered upon your cyber-doorstep. Three HUGE wins and an overtime loss point against some pretty good teams has allowed the Thrashers to work their way right back into the playoff scene, as we’ll discuss below.
But before we open up this weeks STT, I would like to take this oppertunity to give a big shout out to a very nice young lady that I met at Taco Mac last night after the game. Kendall is a sophomore at Woodward Acadamy, a soccer goalie and she and her dad shared a table with Kracker and I as we gathered to celebrate the big win.
I thouroughly enjoyed our chat about Kari Lehtonen and other keepers in the NHL. As she correctly points out, his issues are between the ears and if he ever gets over that he can use his new chance with the Stars to be the type of goalie many think he has the potential to be.
Also, it was great to see Greg…who played hockey with my oldest tax exemption a few years ago. Greg’s grown up and a freshman at college now, as my son will be next year. Yikes!
One last thing, I’ll apologize in advance for today’s Thrasherville Times being a tad thin. I was down for the count these past couple days with a head cold and that limited the material. The Divine Mrs. R cleared me to go to Saturday night’s game just 3 hours before puck drop, however it was understood that I was not to stay up late with Trixie and the rest of the staff to add more to it… or no TJ’s Sunday night.
Therefore, I shall obey doctor’s orders and turn in early so I can join all those that gather tonight for what is sure to be a very exciting game.
What A Week In Thrasherville
Well…what a difference a week can make, eh? Just last Sunday morning the Thrashers were licking their wounds after a 5-2 loss to the Rangers, riding a five-game losing streak and facing a week in which four-playoff caliber teams were heading to town.
Things were looking un-good in Thrasherville indeed.

Colby Armstrong battles Mike Richards while Todd White looks on during the 5-2 win over the Flyers (AP Photo/John Amis)
But with Saturday night’s 5-2 win over the Flyers, they finished the week netting 7 of 8 possible points and we wake up this Sunday morning to see they are one…count them, ONE…point out of the eighth and final playoff spot. And get this…if the Rangers beat Boston this afternoon, when we gather at TJ’s tonight it would be to watch the Thrashers try to leap over the Bs into that final playoff spot.
Oh…and Tuesday night the Boston Bruins come a-callin’.
Colby Armstrong scored twice in the win against Philly, following up his two-goal, three-point performance in Thursday night’s win over Ottawa. Nik Antropov had a goal and assists as well and amassed five goals and three assist during the week. Bergfors and Little also scored for the Thrashers. Toby Enstrom had a pair of helpers and was a +3…Clarke McArthur had two assists and was a +2…and Pavel Kubina finished a +3 on the night.
And what about that Todd White? He scored no goals and had but two assists since Sunday, but he is a +5 in the last two games and played some very good hockey doing so.
The Thrashers currently ride a three game win streak on the back of the Moose. Johan Hedberg stopped 25 of the 27 shots he faced for his 19th win of the season. He’s now 19-13-5 with a .914 SV% and 2.67 GAA.
Atlanta went 3-0-1 and outscored their opponents by a total of 17-10…17-11 counting the gimmick point awarded in the shootout loss to Phoenix Sunday…and have played themselves right back into the playoff picture.
Good week in Thrasherville…but we need another one starting tonight.
Antropv Having Himself A Career Year
Last summer Don Waddell and the Thrashers went out and signed forward Nik Antropov to a four-year deal. The addition, it was thought, was due greatly because one Mr. Ilya Kovalchuk wanted him here …and bringing him in would better the team’s chances of signing Kovy.
Well…it didn’t.
Kovalchuk is gone but Antropov remains…and Nik has taken over the role of the Thrashers’ leading scorer. Heading into tonight’s game with the Flyers, he has racked up a total of 22 goals and 41 assist in 67 games played. The 63 total points are a career high for Antropov…bettering the 56 he put up for Toronto two seasons ago. The 41 assist are tops for him as well. His career high in goals is 26, set during that 2007-08 season also.
He’s currently riding a 4-game streak in which he’s netted 2 points.

Nik Antropov has celbrated many goals with his Thrashers teammates so far this season (AP Photo/Chris O'Meara)
Equally as impressive is the team-high +17 he has. Up to now, his highest +/- rating for a year was a +14 set in his rookie season back in 1999-00.
Since Kovy’s departure, Antropov has produced 9 goals 12 assists in those 15 games.
Kovalchuk is currently a +3 for the season…+1 while with Atlanta and a +2 in New Jersey…and the best season he’s ever had in this category was a -2 put up during the Thrashers playoff season of 2006-07.
Nik may have been brought in, in part, to help retain the services of the team’s top offensive producer…but he now finds himself filling that role himself.
Nice to know he’ll be around for another three seasons at least.
Just In Time For Spring Break
In case you missed it, spring officially arrived Saturday afternoon…and it sure felt like it with temps hitting 70 and the sun shining. And while we are still focused on Thrashers hockey and their push to post-season play, one cannot help but be reminded that summertime fun at the pool or beach is not too far off.
With that in mind, the NHL’s official on-line store, shopnhl.com, has unveiled a new line of officially licensed bikinis that allow ladies to wear their team’s colors while working on their tans.
There are two different designs. One is by G-III which offer up the swimwear for fans of the Sharks, Blackhawks, Capitals, Bruins, Rangers, Red Wings, Penguins and Flyers. The other is by Calhoun which will have Montreal and Toronto fans looking good as well.
Now, I’m quite sure this will be a big hit with the dudes out there, but Puck Daddy’s Greg Wyshynski wonders if it’ll be a hit with the gals as well…or is it a marketing blunder in the making.
Trixie is currently on the phone with Shop NHL trying to find out when the Thrashers bikinis will be available, so we already know she approves.
The official editorial position here at The Thrasherville Times…two thumbs wayyyyyyyyyyy up!
Quotes of the Week
“It wasn’t pretty, but two points are two points. That was a big win and a big confidence boost for us” – Johan Hedberg after Tuesday’s 4-3 win of Buffalo
“He’s so big, it’s like an eclipse of the goalie” – John Anderson on Nik Antropov’s 2 tip in goals vs. Ottawa on Thursday.
“He had the Andy Sutton hat trick tonight. Get beat on a goal, throw a dirty hit, skate away from a fight invitation” – Ben Wright (via twitter) on Andy Sutton’s performance against the Thrashers Thursday night.
“We know our position. We know what’s at stake every game. We’re just trying to worry about ourselves and win games” – Colby Armstrong after Saturday night’s 5-2 win over Philadelphia.

I was very impressed with their play last night. With 10 minutes left the Flyers has only had 15 shots on goal. 15!!! I can’t remember the last time that happened.

Great game, big win and most impressive was toughness on display. Antropov getting in Haetnell face was a welcome sight. If we get in the playoffs, that toughness has to be there every night.

Start Pavs tonight … not by preference but by default. Moose never plays well on back-to-back nights, Philly will crash the net constantly and we need a fresh Moose on Tuesday for the Bruins.

Another wonderful edition of the Thrasherville Times. Very nice. In the next six games , like any stretch of six, there are twelve (12) available points. Here’s how it much pretty has to go, for a bare bones minimum. At least one versus Philly tonight. Two points against Boston. Three points versus the Maple Leafs, in the two upcoming games against them. And, at least one-point vs. the ‘Canes, in those two games with Carolina. IFFFF all that happens, that’s a record of 2-1-3, good enough for seven of twelve (7/12) points.
Imagine if the above could be converted into a WIN versus Philly and two wins vs. Toronto? That adds two (2) more points, bumping Atlanta up to nine of twelve (9/12) points. The record would then be 4-1-1. When we take the current streak of 3-0-1, that’d make 7-1-2 over ten hypothetical games, good enough for sixteen out of twenty (16/20) points. And folks, that’s how you make the playoffs–playing your best hockey at the most critical time of the year.
Will it happen?? I don’t know. I hope the answer is, “yes.” But this team hasn’t been able to maintain consistency … ever. There’s no time like the present to announce, through their play, that this Thrashers squad is playoff-bound.
Good teams find a way to win. Bad teams find a way to lose. Good teams defeat the teams that they should defeat. Bad teams lose against those same teams. Gazing at the standing, Philly is AHEAD of us. Therefore, I suppose, Atlanta is expected to lose. But against Toronto and Carolina, using standings alone, Atlanta should win. When the truth is … Philly is playing “just okay.” Toronto is playing “fairly well.” And Carolina would make the playoffs, is the season were 90 games long this year. The ‘Canes are REDDDD HOTTTT. It’s all here. The opportunity to shut up the naysayers … is right here. Right now. There’s no chance New Jersey will miss the playoffs, and shut Kovalchuk out. But it’s up to Atlanta to try to jump up to 7th place, to face the Devils in the 1st round.

Quite a fun nite in Thrasherville! My section was rockin and the upper deck was as full as I can remember in quite some time. Still quite empty on the attack-once end but still a good showing for a “bad” team with an incompetent GM and owners!
Anyway, when was the last time ANY Thrasher team scored 3 of 5 goals in greasy fashion? Let alone against the Flyers!! The boys are really starting to storm the crease of late. They are finally utilizing all that speed to beat their opponents to loose pucks.
Also what is quite noteworthy is the aggressive back-checking of all the forwards. Especially Max, Bergie and Little; those boys are really flyin out there. Can’t say that I miss that Kovalchuk fellow.
Let’s hope the inspired play continues over the next couple of weeks and isn’t just a 5 or 6 game mirage in yet another lost season wandering in the desert of futility.

How can anyone not have wanted to be at Blueland last night? How awesome was that?!?!?! The place was rockin and it was obvious the team fed off of it. Jekyl n Hyde is a monster when they are on top of their game aren’t they? Thank you Nik for going after the Flyers after the slash on the Moose, it spoke volumes and was a good penalty to take IMO. That being said, can we get ANY goaltender interference calls go our way? I think that call is reserved for us only. Oh well, the team is playing great right now and HOPEFULLY they will decide that this is the way to play hockey every game. Couldn’t have asked for a better game to take the kids (3&5) to for their first hockey game…..only now my daughter says we should go to EVERY game from now on….can you say hockey love? She started several LET’S GO THRASHERS chants all by herself and was very concerned when Moose got slashed LOL Guess they will become just more of the sheep heading to the Thrashers games to cheer on the boys in blue!!!

Correct Smoothie, it was fun last night! A few observations-
Carcillo is a chicken/coward – he was shooting his mouth off at Boulton in the penalty box after calling out that heavyweight, Jim Slater. Did anyone else see Boulton cluck his arms like a chicken when Carcillo refused to drop the gloves? It was a classic! Just like Mandy Sutton Thursday night!
I hate Philly, I really do-same old act for the last 40 years. They get away with murder, late hits after the whistle, pushing and shoving and never a penalty. The refs were horrible Saturday night! The Flyers had way too much puck possesion time in our zone. That has to change if we are going to have a chance tonight.
Chris Kunitz-this was the NHL top 6 forward that goyt away from the Thrashers. I don’t know if anyone is watching these days, but Kunitz is pretty much a non-factor in Pittsburgh. Granted they have a great team, but I think Kunitz looks pretty over rated right now.
Came home to great late games last night, Phoenix-Chicago and Detroit-Vancouver.
Dave Tippett showing why he should not have been let go in Dallas, The Wings showing they are not dead yet. They still have guys that can make plays.

We’ve caught a few stinkers in a row on our ticket package for games we’ve attended. Nice to get a win and a terrifc effort.
I want to see more of Artyukhin! If he can keep the puck on his stick when he drives the net, we may get a few more goals from him down the stretch.
Every time I’ve knocked Army on this blog, he’s shut me up with turning his game around. Maybe I should take some more pot shots at him.

Zoomo,
I also bagged on Armstrong and Toby, and both have pleasantly turned the tables on me (thanks for shooting the puck Toby!). LOL I dare say even one Mr. Todd White is playing inspired hockey!!! It may just be that the boys are seeing that HOCKEY in Atlanta can be fun!?! Just gotta find a way to stay away from the WHOLE team taking nights off together and keep playing hard. I think having so many people there cheering them on helped a lot too, much like the Fla games before and after the Olympic break.
Watching the Rangers/Bruins game now and as much as we need them to win, I am having trouble saying let’s go Rangers. Just can’t get it to come out. Just couldn’t work up the passion. I liked what Darren Eliot said last night that he hoped they would both lose. Am I the only one who thought they both played awful? Slow, leaden feet, twirly passes instead of shots on net, and most shots were weak and way wide. The Thrashers are chasing THEM ? We are better than that!

Scoring first on BOS is more important than against any other team. All they want to do is strike early and then clog up the middle with 4 of their 5 players. Our d-men must be willing to shoot often and early so our forwards can jam home some loose change. And speed to the outside will be key to breaking them down. Oh yeah, gotta beat Philly too!
Call me crazy, but regardless of what happens tonite, I think a record of 7 – 4 – 0 with a win over BOS gets us in. But an OT point would be huge and a win even HUGE-er!

With this win, we now have 73 points, bested last season by 2 points. Here’s some food for thought.
Two years ago, we end the season with 71 points. 1/4 of that season without Hossa in the lineup.
Last season, we also end the season with 71 points, this time, not a single game with Hossa.
This season, we beat got at least 73 points, 1/4 of the season without Kovalchuk.
Is this was we call moving in the right direction?

That should read, 2007-08 above. But the point is, at 73-points, with 11 games to play, I feel confident that Atlanta will once again reach 76-points, at a minimum. Whether or not they make the playoffs is anyone’s guess. We simply cannot rule it out, as the East is very inept this year. Boston has injury issues. Philadelphia has goalie issues this year. The NY Rangers are Gaborik and not much else. Montreal is a flighty team, just as apt to miss the playoffs as close the gap with Buffalo for the division championship. It’s a crazy, whacky-type of year, where 88-points will get a team into the playoffs instead of the usual 93-94 points. Like I said, it’s a WEAK FIELD in the East this year. Anytime a given year is weak, it opens doors for weak teams.
Carolina is coming on like gangbusters. 6-3-1 in their last 10. Montreal is 7-2-1 in their last 10. Toronto is 7-2-1 in their last 10. The point? Some teams that has faltered most of the year, like Montreal … like Toronto … like Carolina … are now playing very well. Now is not the time to have to play them. Likewise, Atlanta has been a middling team all season. But if, by some miracle, they finally, at long last, develop some consistency, and goes 4-1-1 in their next six games, we’ll have no choice but to talk about them as a playoff team. If, by contrast, they go 1-4-1, this thing should be over. But yet, maybe not, even then. Why? Because … the East’s field is WEAK this year. When all the teams suck, all the sucky team play sucky. Think of it this way. Imagine it’s the NBA. And the race is to try to finish 37-45, for the 8th and final spot. The teams are 30-41 or 31-42. That’s where the NHL playoffs stand, essentially.
Right now, any team that can put together a streak has a very serious chance of making the playoffs. And once in … New Jersey is struggling. Buffalo is struggling. Ottawa is struggling. Philly … is struggling. The only team in the East that has played with any consistent quality all year … is the Washington Capitals. And yes, that’s the team that will be in the CF this year, along with Pittsburgh.
While we’re on this topic, let’s say, for spits-n-giggles, that Atlanta makes the playoffs, somewhere between 6th and 8th. Who do you WANT to play? New Jersey, for the matchup with Kovalchuk? By definition, someone has to win. Either Kovy will get his first playoff win or Atlanta will. Either Kovy will win a playoff series, or Atlanta will, in that matchup. Do you want Crosby, Malkin, Staal, and the Penguins? Do you want Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom, Green, and the Capitals? To get Buffalo, Atlanta will probably have to make it to 6th spot.
So, what say you? Caps, Pens, Devils, or Sabres … as the 1st round opponent?
Tom

Was watching the New Jersey fans talking about Kovy and they are confused about him. They are not getting the offensive output they expected, but are attributing it to playing with talented players and not getting the looks.
If Ilya is all that, as the kids say, he should be making everyone better. Not sitting behind other players.
It may be interesting if it becomes conventional wisdom that the Thrashers won this trade.

Tom, I wouldn’t rule out the playoffs, entirely. And I’m someone who has already called the “time of death” of said event. At the time I did, I had no blessed idea just HOW BADLY the rest of the East would falter down the stretch. 2010 won’t be remembered as a “banner year” for the East. The two strong teams are Pittsburgh and Washington, followed by New Jersey, who has, at various times, looked rather middling. Ottawa is hot and cold. Montreal is a flipping mystery. I figured them for 9th spot, and felt generous giving them that. I had the NY Rangers in 8th. Boston in 7th. And Philly in 6th.
But right now, it’s literally anyone’s spots to claim. It’s whoever steps up and delivers. If the Atlanta Thrashers lay an egg, who could say they were exactly surprised? That’s what is expected. But if they put together a run … they’ll make it in. It’s up to them. They must “handle their business,” and ignore the “scenarios” for help. Win your games … to control your own destiny.

Previously I was Tom with a capital T but with the new tom with a small t I figured it was time to differentiate as we may come from different schools of thought.
Here are some numbers post Kovy trade. The Devils before the trade averaged 1.268 points per game are averaging 1.133 points per game so they are worse off as a team since adding Ilya.
We are playing essentially the same. Pre trade we averaged 1.018 per game. Post trade we are averaging 1.028 per game.
So we have maintained our winning percentage even with a 6 game losing streak while New Jersey is not earning points like they did before adding Ilya.
Food for thought.

Brendan I agree with your observations about the East.
Philly. Montreal, and Ottawa all have it within them to fall apart.
Lets face it, the Philly fans are calling for the GMs head and will be shellshocked if they lose the home and home to the Thrashers. We get an early lead tonight and the boo birds will be out in full voice tonight.
That all 3 will fall apart is not expected but I could see one of them falling out of the pack. The top 4 are locked in, the middle 3 are weak sisters and 1 could fall. That leaves a beat up Boston to hold off the fragile Rangers and a surging Thrashers.
You take away our losing streak and we would be a near lock for the playoffs.

Tom, I remember when the talk was, “New Jersey just bought the Cup, by adding Kovalchuk.” I was one of the few who said, “If Lou sees Kovy as a defensively liability, he’ll flip Kovy over to Los Angeles before even the trade deadline, maybe for more than we got for him. But don’t count on Kovalchuk re-signing in Jersey. Or on the Devils winning the Cup this year.”

I think tonight can be the defining game of the season. If we win tonight that will send a shockwave through Philly and Boston. We will have evened out the losing streak and be with striking distance of Boston till near the end of the season and brings the Flyers into range with a 3rd string goalie.
If we lose it makes Tuesday a must win game.

Tom, exactly right. It’s Atlanta’s lack of consistency that has doomed them this season. They went 1-7-4 during a stretch of season, during contract negotiations. And then, just recently, they went 0-5-1. Take those 18 games, and figure how those 36-points could have otherwise went. Atlanta got seven points. Seven, out of 36. 1-12-5. If those losing streaks could have resulted in a “slightly better” 3-11-4, it would have resulted in 10-points, three better than seven. And right now, Atlanta would have 77-points. But, it is what it is.

I can’t believe people are still saying its gonna be a WAS vs PIT CF! I mean when was the last time you saw a 1 vs 2 seed in the CF? Of course, WAS is playing amazing, but have they proven enough in the playoffs? Did they get the right guys to make a PLAYOFF run? Of course, PIT is an amazing playoff team, but the playoffs are home to upsets.
For tonights game, just do the same thing as yesterday: crash the net since Boucher cant handle a rebound.

As LAC stated earlier today, it’s period by period now. Game by game too, our fortunes change every night because things are so close in the East. I am happy for the last 3 games, but there’s alotta hockey left to play. Nice to see the house almost full last night.
On Kovy-we all know he’s probably the most talented hockey player to ever wear a Thrashers’ uniform. Kovy is great individual talent. However, to date, his talent has not translated to a betterment in the Devils’ fortunes on the ice. Tom’s number support that the Devils are largely the same team they were before the trade. Looking forward, the Devils gave up 4 players for a rental that’s looking for more money in his next contract then the Devils can offer. He’s already turned down $103 mil for the chance at a Stanley Cup. Staying in NJ after this season would be the biggest “hometown discount” in NHL history, one that I doubt Kovy is willing to take.
I hope the few weeks of mediocrity in NJ has at least humbled Mr. First Class Organization.

I want a new rule in the NHL and it should go like this-
“If a player wearing a visor instigates an altercation with another player who is not wearing a visor, the instigator should be ejected for the remainder of the game. If it occurs in the 3rd period of a game, the player should be suspended for the next game as well.”
I am sick of players like Clutterbuck, Cooke and Kaleta instigating altercations while wearing visors.
You can’t be tough and wear a visor. Take off the visor!

Brendan, we have the best chance against the Sabres. Buffalo is a group of third line players, a great yound D-man and a world class goaltender. Nothing more. Next would be NJ, just cause I think they are “confused” right now as to why they are not so much better with Kovy.

Hi Bill. May be too late for playoffs but I sure like what I just saw! Pavs solid. Defense staunch. Offense adequate. Like the way that Philly thug kicked Pavs stick into Pittsburgh? Keri Fraser missed seeing it? What a freaking surprise! Just think if at least three points had been banked during that six game nightmare stretch. Sigh, Oh well. That said…First I wish to personally congratulate Pavs. Outstanding job young man! Securing a critical victory over the Lowflyers in Filthadelphia. I can remember at least five utterly phenomenal saves! I underestimated the young netminder. I fully expected a Kari Lehtonen-like debacle with Johan Moose Hedberg on bench. Glad to admit I was dead wrong! Pavs snuffed 44 of 45 shots. A superlative effort no matter how you cut it! Where in the name of blue blazes were these guys during that horrendous losing streak? Wherever they are I certainly hope they stay there! Thrashers led 2-0 late into final period before margin sliced in half. Third tally iced triumph on hostile ice! Sweet. Cannot blame Lowflyers. More to whipping Thrashers now than shutting down one player! Sure is nice to see Thrashers playing as a unit! Hope they maintain that edge from here on out. Perhaps into playoffs? Maybe even a date with some Devils? I can dream! ++STENDEK++

The boycott over the STH benefits and discounts worked from the standpoint of the ASG creating “value” in the STH package and pricing.
That said, I’m no fan of Waddell, but “crossed the line” as ticket pricing and STH perks were enhanced.
Also, the team payroll was FINALLY increased.
Yes, I know the knucklehead is still the GM, however, based on drafing and recent scouting, I firmly believe Dudley is creating an identity for the team.

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to an 8-point swing over the Flyers! Atlanta takes 4-points while denying Philly 4-points And, as I understand it, Atlanta has swept the season series, as well.
Pavelec is 5-1-3 when facing 40 or more shots. Astounding. I guess he’s the type of goalie who always needs to touch the puck to be in the game? Fine by me. Whatever works for the guy.
“On the Fly” called Atlanta’s defense, “unheralded.” They said, “When it all comes together, it works. Enstrom’s good. Hainsey had a 3-point night. Kubina had five shots.” Said analyst and former Islander Dennis Potvin, “Sometimes, when a team loses the one guy who generated all the offense, like we had in Florida with Pavel Bure, the whole team comes together (to pick up the slack).”
Philly has to look at its goaltending. I’m not here to rain on any parades. But Boucher gave up each and every goal from his right side, the left faceoff circle. Hainsey, White (GWG), and then Peverley. Beeee honest. Would another goaltender have stopped those shots? I’m thinking, “maybe so.” The insult to injury is that Todd White got the game winning goal. I had wondered, before it became a final, if Rich Peverley’s goal would have put him atop the NHL leaderboard for Game-winning-goals (GWG), had the Flyers added a late goal, to make it, 3-2. What does it matter? It’s a big win and a big weekend. Points 74 and 75 on the season. One more point to reach last year’s point totals, with 10 games left to get it. One more win and the T-birds surpass last year’s totals.
Okay, “red hot” Carolina lost today, 5-3, to Buffalo. Carolina and Toronto are playing good hockey these days, despite their overall records. Atlanta will face both teams TWICE in the next five games, with Boston up next. The game with Boston has playoff implications, as the Bruins are only one-point ahead of Atlanta. But if the Bruins win, in regulation time, to bump that lead to 3-points, while taking a game off the schedule. It’s a great opportunity for Boston to put some distance between themselves and the Thrashers.
The last five games for Atlanta are 4-0-1, good enough for nine points out of a possible ten (9/10). The lone lost point was a shootout loss to Phoenix, where Pevelec couldn’t slam the door on Phoenix’s 3rd shooter for the win.
Great win!! Despite 45 shots against. The real bottom line, at this time of year, is the result. And the result is a regulation time win, for two-points.
Waffleboy, you don’t believe in home fans giving their organization “instant feedback” on product evaluation? Generally speaking, I don’t “boo” at games. I don’t usually “boo” a player. Not Heatley. Not Hossa. Not Savard. Not even Sean Avery. If/when I “boo,” it’s usually a bad call by the official. Or a “non call” by the official. Or if I disagree with the goal review committee in Toronto. Especially when it’s “no goal, for being a southern team facing a Canadian team.” When my team plays badly, I shake my head, disapprovingly. Maybe I mumble to myself. Or groan.
But, that said, I admire the Flyer fans stance. I do. I admit it, freely. When they find something “unacceptable,” they’re vocal about it. Now, I can’t agree with throwing things on the ice or AT SOMEONE. There are certain things, as fans, for safety reasons, we should never do. A fan who throws a beer bottle, coins, or whatever, on the ice, should be escorted out of the building. But a fan who brings a sign that says, “Fire Laviolette,” or “Fire Holmgren” hasn’t done anything wrong. That’s freedom of speech, so long as it doesn’t contain foul language. That fan “cared enough” to buy a ticket and be at the arena. That’s how I see it.

After that losing streak, I thought like many… It’s over. But I saw TOTAL team play for the first time in a LONG LONG LONG time this weekend, and to hear the Philly coach and players and media
whining and moaning to the point of TEARS, just capped it all off on a POSITIVE note !
the Philly team looked like a bottle of flat Coke, Nothing in the tank and although they got 45 SOG tonight, many were not good scoring chances. What I have liked BEST is the ability to get the puck
out of our zone and not get trapped, only twice did that happen this weekend, both tonight.

Brendan – it is cool to see the national media jump on the Thrashers’ bandwagon. Let’s see where they are in 5 games; one game at a tiime.
The last 2 games gave us a chance to see how inept Philly management is. They have 2 fabulous players in Richards and Carter. Beyond that, I would say the Thrashers are a better overall team than the Flyers. Philly still has the 70’s mentality that physical play and intimidation still win games. Safe to say that the game has passed Philadelphia by. Briere, Pronger and Hartnell are all role players that make star money; all are locked up for years. Timonen is their only mobile defenseman, the rest of their D are stiffs.
A note of caution fans; Brian Boucher couldn’t stop a beachball this weekend. We’ll see much better goaltending from here to the end of the regular season.

Thrasville – There’s nothing wrong with supporting the name on the back of the jersey.
My problems with Waddell are simple:
1) Retain top tier talent, and no, this is not a Kovy issue, it includes a multitude of top tier talent walking out the door, players signing elsewhere for lesser terms contracts, or waiving no-trade clause contracts to avoid waivers.
2) Tell the truth, no more “Zhitnik will be a big part of the team”, “playoff guarantees”, “building through the draft” as he’s trsding away low early round draft picks.

World – I agree with punks like Cooke initiating fights. But the visor issue is no longer a “tough guy” issue, rather a safety issue. I personally played hockey with a guy who suffered a detached retina from an errant puck. He was “lucky” he lost vision for only 6 months, when doctors told him he’d probably be legally blind in the eye. You also have high stick issues (remember Bryan Berard?) which visors can’t fully stop the impact but they can help.
So I agree that I dislike the punks who hide behind their visors and start crap, but the majority of players probably wear these for safety reasons.

Masha-if I remember right, the guy who whacked Berard was none other than Mary Anne Hossa.
I have no issues with visors, cages or face shields for safety reasons. Other the other hand, the existance of these shields has made more players become careless with their sticks because they never played without this protective equipment. Same with the number of head shots and concussions; these were not issues back in the day when virtually nobody wore a helmet. Players respected each other; no hits from behind back in the day either.
My fighting issue with shield is simple-if you are going to wear one, don’t be a tough guy. Don’t be like Pat Verbeek or the clowns I mentioned earlier. It’s not fair to you opponent when you are fighting someone with half you face protected.

Keep on taking us lightly, everybody!
Next myth to bust: “Just imagine how good _____’s numbers would be with some talented players around him” (fill in the blank with Heatley, Savard, Hossa, Kovy).

Damn, sounds like some of you guys were as nuts as the old school NHL guys who didn’t wear goalie masks! Big UPS to y’all for battling hard on the playground rinks growing up. I played some floor hockey in grade school, but it was a very controlled environment. I was a legend in my own mind with my wooden Koho stick.
The first 5 minutes of the first period against Boston are the most five important minutes of most of these young men’s hockey lives. Not to put too much pressure on them, but an early lead against Boston is beyond huge. Gotta jump on them early, get the crowd really into it and hopefully strain the will of the Bruins who struggle to score goals.
Our D-men better be ready cuz Lucic, Krejci, Thornton, Sobotka and Wheeler will be looking to hit the crap out of our smaller guys.
Toughest match-up other than Washington for our boys, but I think we can take them. Five minute segments, smart decisions with the puck in our own zone and support of our goalie clearing pucks. Hopefully, our speed will be a factor if we can remain patient and not take too many calculated risks.

WBF-I was in my 20’s when I played and did not want anyone thinking I was not as tough in the “corners”as they were so I was not about to wear a mouthpiece, instead I have since financed my orthpeadic surgeons four daughters through med school. But,given the memories of those days and all the fun,I still believe I would not have changed a thing.I think those memories are the fuel that has me obsessed with this game.

Smoothie-agreed-I think the Brunes can be had if get on top of them early. They know they do not have the offense to come back from any deficit.
Schroeder-I miss corn on the cob! No better sport to play than hockey, better that football, soccer, baseball or anything else. But it does leave some scars that do not heal. Like you, I would not have traded them for anything!

So here’s the stats for busting the oft-posted myth that players do better once they leave ATL and can be “surrounded by talent”:
Kovy, it’s way too early to draw conclusions, but:
Average points per 82 games, with Thrashers: 84.9
Average points per 82 games, with others: 61.5
Decrease of 27.6%
Best season: 2005-06, 98 points with Thrashers
Hossa:
Average points per 82 games, with Thrashers: 91.6
Average points per 82 games, with others: 70.4
Decrease of 23.2%
Best season: 2006-07, 100 points with Thrashers
Savard:
Average points per 82 games, with Thrashers: 87.3
Average points per 82 games, with others: 68.6
Decrease of 21.5%
Best season: 2005-06, 97 points with Thrashers
Perhaps ATL becomes the place known for players improving their careers numbers. Antro and Pevs would certainly sign on to that testimonial! Heatley’s stats don’t fit that pattern, but that was due largely to his development as a player, not the personnel surrounding him.
I am SOOOOO pumped for Tuesday!!! Thrashers, please show up as Mr Hyde!!

All the MOmemtum on the Habs side, and playing at home, but their hot streak and the Sens cold streak need to snap sometime, so why not tonight? Sens 4-3.

Dwayne – that’s a toughy since we have the tie-breaker against both of them, should we get that high that is. But the best case scenario is an outright winner. No loser points! That extra point makes it harder to gain ground on teams ahead of us. OT loser points are only good for us at this point. An OTL against Boston is even okay as long as Philly and the NYR lose their next game. I think I want Montreal over Ottawa and then Ottawa rebounds and beats Philly outright at home. That would really send the Flyers reeling!!

Badger Bob-great numbers and toss Max in with the list of people who have revived their careers in ATL.
Ottawa goalies can’t stop anything. Don’t know who I am cheering for tonight, but I hope the game doesn’t go into OT. Only 2 ttl points given out for regulation wins.

Guess I’m in a numbers mood, but in comparing our schedule to the Broons for the stretch drive:
Winning percentage of Thrashers opponents for the last ten games of the season: .571
Winning percentage of Bruins opponents for the last eleven games of the season: .572
However, by March 31, the numbers separate:
Winning percentage of Thrashers opponents for the last five games of the season: .669
Winning percentage of Bruins opponents for the last six games of the season: .583
In other words, we need to have a lead on the Bruins by the end of March – at least a 5 point lead would make me happy.
Also, the Caps may get to choose their first round opponent, with 2 games v Boston and 2 games v ATL in April. Any chance they lay down for us? No, I didn’t think so.

Don’t look now, but Johnny Oduya is a +10 in the month of March and as a Thrasher. He and Ronald Hainsey seem to be gelling quite nicely. Hainsey is a +10 since THE trade as well and is now a -2 on the season. Last night was his first 3 point game as a Thrasher since December of 2008 and he has 9 points in the last 12 games. Oh yeah, and they play some defense as well. Oduya & Hainsey have 30 of the team’s last 74 blocked shots including 14 on Saturday (7 each) and 10 last night (6 & 4). If this pairing continues to play like this and we limit the bone-head mistakes on the bottom pairing, we can make the playoffs.

The fat lady is on the back bench no longer wariming up. What a complete reversal of fortune! Hoping the Trash can keep the momentum as those of us who have followed the team from day one know that this team does not have a good track record in key games. Remain guardedly optimistic.

Great reading guys, wish i had more than a 10 minute break…Badger Bob, maybe Pitt and Wash roll 4 lines reguardless of score AND if they can not advance there playoff position. Thats a big MAYBE.
Ottawa vrs. Montreal. Too bad they are both across the border, find it real hard to pull for Montreal, but i hope they win in regulation…no loser point

Speaking of Max, who would be in favor of re-signing him, and, what terms, including length and cost/year, would you be willing to offer?
Yes, I know he’s not likely to re-sign with Kovy gone, but I’m still curious what your thoughts are.
Also, wouldn’t it be a hoot if we ended up playing the Devils in the playoffs and Max had to defend Kovy and vice-versa.

Similar negativity to Pittsburgh’s comments: The Bruins have won nine straight against Atlanta and three in a row in Atlanta. And, not that I expect this to be the case in tomorrow night’s game, but Miro Satan has been unbelievable in his career vs. the Thrashers. In 34 career games, he has 24 goals and 20 assists.

Thinking statistically, I’m not sure the Bruins are where we need to look. We have two other teams with just a few points on the Thrash — Philly and Ottawa are doing poorly and Philly has goal tending challenges. Ottawa, quite frankly, really sucks right now. The Habs are so-so — so I think they’ll maintain their position. So, yes, we need to overtake the Bruins, and we definitely need to beat them in the short term since a win would solve two problems that we have. But I would bet that another team will fall out below them by the end of the season.

Stroz, I have been thinking about what we need to keep Max. I think the Kovy thing is past, now that Max has maintained his goal scoring and point pace. Where else is he going to have what he has in ATL? He has 2 guys feeding him all the time.
What will Max get on the UFA market and will the playing situations be any ebtter than what he has here? Most teams that have cap space either have UFAs they need to sign or they are worse teams than the Thrashers. I say 3 years, $12M and we can retain Max.
Retaining the UFAs will be Waddell’s biggest challenge. This challenge will be easier if the Thrashers can continue to show promise and progress.

I am sure I will get an argument, but Max, Mikael Samuelsson and Craig Anderson are the three best “value” free agent signings from last summer. And remember, Max made $3.5 million in his last season in Buffalo, Samuelsson $1.2 million in Detroit and Anderson $575,000 in Florida. Even though he got a substantial raise, Antro isn’t far behind.

More bad news from Philly. Everyone saw “Aw!”
“The Flyers playoff hopes took another broadside hit on Monday afternoon when the club learned that Jeff Carter will miss three to four weeks with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot.”
And, I just traded for him in my Fantasy League! Typical.

LAC-I am with you totally, but I think if we continue on our current path, D-Wad will be safe for at least another season. Heck, he was kept when the team stunk, you think they’ll get rid of him IF, IF the team does better?
There’s no business logic in these decisions, never has been!
