Kiss Cam couple for 7th Fan Update and un-good math

Inside of last weekend’s Sunday Thrasherville Times, I mentioned the elderly couple that so often appears on the Kiss Cam during the game and suggested they be the ones who are awarded this year’s 7th Fan Award. Since then, many of you have posted comments, send e-mails to me and have stopped me at Philips prior to the Coyotes game to express your support for this concept…and I thank you very much for your support in this endeavor.

Recently, even the boys over at the Blueland Chronicle have climbed aboard this movement and have voiced their opinions in favor of seeing this lovely couple given such an honor.

Well, here’s an “Operation Kiss Cam Couple” update for you…I have obtained the names of the two. They are T.R. and Maria Benning.

Now, from what I understand, in order for them…or anyone else, for that matter…to win the award, they have to write an essay explaining why. Here is a link that you can use to get all the info on that. I’ve been told essays can be written on the behalf of others, but I’m wiling to bet those two wouldn’t seek such spotlight for themselves. Therefore, it has to be done by others…that would be me and that would be you.

So, if you are one of the many who have told me you like the idea of them being this year’s winner…well, you know what to do.

I thank you in advance for your efforts and support. Let’s make this happen gang and give us all something special to look forward to on April 10.

And Speaking of April 10…

That of course is the 82nd and final game on this season’s Thrashers schedule and the Pittsburgh Penguins will be in town that night. This will also be the last game the Thrashers will play, in my opinion, until the 2010-11 campaign gets under way next fall.

They currently sit in 10th place on the Eastern Conference with 69 points and have 13 games left to play. Boston currently holds the 8th and final playoff spot in the east with 74…they also have 13 games remaining.

Now, despite this…a few of you have told me that there is still a chance that, if the Thrashers get hot, they could still squeak in to the playoffs. And while I admire such enthusiasm and “never-say-die” spirit…let me sit you down in a nice, comfy chair, put on some, soothing music, pour you a warm cup of herbal tea, light some mood candles and see if I can’t talk you down in a way that’ll soften the landing.

See, the Bruins are currently playing at a rate that would land them at 88 points. So, since we lose any tiebreaker with them, we would need to set the benchmark at 89 points to qualify for post-season play. That would mean Atlanta would have to go 10-3 the rest of the way to top Boston…assuming they go only 7-5 in their remaining games.

Oh…and the Rangers, who are currently between the Thrashers and the Bruins, would also have to finish with no more than 89 points. That would mean they couldn’t play any better than 9-2-1 in their final 12…which I don’t think would be an issue. But again, that is all predicated on the Thrashers going 10-3.

Therefore, as you can see…the math simply paints a very un-good picture for Thrasherville.

Now…let me take this a step in the opposite direction. Right now, with the team at 69 points, they have to earn more than 7 in their last 13 matches in order to better their 76-point performances of the last to seasons. If they go only 3-9-1 down the stretch…that’s exactly where they would wind up.

Look at the schedule folks…the five games in April will see us play Pittsburgh twice, Washington twice and New Jersey. Between now and then there are a pair of games with Philly, who are currently jockeying for playoff position and could land anywhere from 5th through 8th…one with the Bruins, who we have already discussed…and tonight’s matchup with Ottawa, who at this time sit in fifth place in the east with a record of 37-28-5 but are only 3 points behind Buffalo for the Northeast Division lead.

There are but four “softies” left of the schedule. Two with Toronto, who we beat 4-3 in the last matchup but spanked us 5-2 the last time faced off in Toronto…and two with Carolina, who completely shut us down 4-0 two Sunday’s ago. If I’m not mistaken, in the six games played between Atlanta and Carolina, the road team has always come out with the win.

Finding eight points in that pack in and of itself could be a tall order…finding 20 would be even tougher.

Go on now…sit back and sip on your tea. I’ll turn up the music and leave you to deal with this.

And Finally…

Sunday the Thrashers play the tail end of their back-to-back weekend series with the Philadelphia Flyers…and that might be a nice evening to get on out to TJ’s to view the game. Also, let me know if you’re interested in doing the same on Friday night April 9 when they play up in D.C. It’ll be the last away game of the year.

TJ’s is located at 2880 Holcomb Bridge Road, located just north of the River in Fulton County. Their phone number is 770-552-7700.

Hope to see you all there before we begin out 6-month long offseason.

Rawhide, while I am in the pessimist camp like you, I must correct you on a couple o’ things. We currently reside in 10th place one silly point ahead of Tampa. Also, last time we played Toronta, we beat them in dramatic fashion by a count of 4 to 3. Although they did beat us soundly at the ACC by a resounding 5 to 2 margin. Oh yeah, we probably wouldn’t have beaten TOR if not for the heroics of some guy named Ko-VAL-chook. Lastly, I think we have a good shot at beating Ottawa as they could not be playing any worse…no worse than us even. 1 – 5 – 1 in their last 7 games with only 9 GF and 22 GA. Must be the Andy Sutton factor dragging them back down into the depths of futility!

BTW, did any one happen to see Andy out around town last night? He was probably painting the town BLUE!

[setting down my tea] I fully agree with you Rawhide.

Kills me because on paper this team should have made the post-season – but the last skid cost the team dearly. The Bruins, Flyers and even Ranger’s schedules aren’t too bad the rest of the way. Just not enough room to make up the gap.

Oh and for the next time – I prefer two cubes of sugar in my tea.

If the herbal tea and mood candles do not work, break out the bullhorn and the taser. We’re done. Period. But that doesn’t mean I will stop watching and hoping for a win.

For the record according to the rules you can NOT nominate another person … only yourself. I had a Twitter discussion with Ben about this just the other day.

BenThrashers: Technically you can’t nominate somebody else & anyone that enters is supposed to live within 75 miles. GA contest rules are strict.

We have to be ready to next season. Hopefully NHL will review our situation again and help us to create Smart and Professional Managment, Expirience Coaching Staff and Plears that want to play for Atlanta. I think we have to go down and pick other Lottery. :-(
I did not see any possible way to make PO on this year. Yes. It is a MIRACLE. But miracle for Atlanta this year should be 10 times BIGGER than USA won USSR at 1980. :-)

Home and home w Philly should be entertaining….seems like the last game with them had some good action in it. Don’t know about you guys but I need a laugh, so here we go:

Thursday March 4, 2010 \ 4:20PM \ NHL

For Immediate Release

New Orleans, Louisiana

The Toronto Maple Leafs are headed south of the border. Sources close to the Leafs have leaked the information out over time and somehow the leaks have been mistaken for the Atlanta Thrashers being moved to Winnipeg, which was not the case.

The new team, The New Orleans Vampires, will be ready for the 2010-11 NHL season according to recently named GM, Pierre “Frenchy” LeGrenouille.

“We named the team based on the recent surge of Vampire-mania sweeping the United States and beyond and think it’s the time to pull the trigger on making Hockey a more American Sport”

The Vampires will be playing in the New Orleans Arena along side their NBA counterparts, The New Orleans Hornets. “We’ve been in numerous discussions with Gary Bettman about where to move the Leafs to and because of his rich history with the NBA we decided that most NHL Teams should partner up with NBA Franchises in a soon to be announced ‘Cross League Profit Sharing’ system” LeGrenouille said. “It’s a win-win for the United States, who will now hold 25 of the NHL’s 30 teams. Since most hardcore hockey fans in Canada act as if fan base is what is most important and moving teams from markets they consider ‘experiments’ to Canada are the only way for ‘their sport’ to survive we figure a cross promotional deal with the NBA is necessary. This way the sport will be available to grow out to the hundreds of millions of potential fans (and potential Dollars) in the US. Since Canada has a population the size of California the NHL may actually flourish if more people follow the sport and are given a chance to learn how amazing a game it can be. That is how you make a fan base. Not by being xenophobes and treating potential fans as a nuisance”

The Vampires will have the motto “Come watch us SUCK!” When asked why they would choose such an ambiguous motto that could be open to ridicule LeGrenouille replied “Well, the team should be used to it. Toronto has sucked for years.”

Potential promotions will be “Mardi Gras Beads Night” and “Hersheys Presents: Chocolate City on Ice”

LeGrenouille expects the forthcoming press conference to be announced first to the Winnipeg Free Press so they can make the flight to a city that “Can actually get the job done when it comes to ‘stealing’ a team, and then report to their citizens what actual sportsmanship is”

The boycott thing creates a hockey conflict.

Boycotting is not going to facilitate a change in management. So if you think staying away is going to change things, you are wrong. Many people have already spoken with their feet. You can bet Ottawa will not fill the house tonight, which will create plenty of fodder for the idiots in the Canadian media.

I choose NOT to boycott because I am a hockey fan. I go to games because I love hockey more than any other sport. I’ll watch any game on TV, have attended junior, midget and bantam games forever. I am not happy with the product or the direction of the Thrashers, but like so many others, I am a hockey fan.

Some you call us “sheep” for continuing to attend games. You have the right to boycott the team if you wish, but that’s your decision not mine. If you don’t want me to attend games, then come to the arena and stand in my way. Betcha you won’t be standing there too long.

One final note – I like and respect LAC’s opinions-he’s very clear with why he dislikes the team and won’t attend games until changes are made. Good for him.

I used to always think that I had a small chance as the rules used to be for Georgia residents and I could use a relative’s address, now that they added the whole 75 mile thing, I’m SOL. Doesn’t stop me from supporting the team, but it does seem weird knowing I can be a fan, but not the most loyal because of legal reasons. The no nominations rule is an odd one, because I certainly think several have gone this route in the past, although I’m sure the eventual winners submitted something as well.

You know Badger, I have no problem with people’s opinions. But critisizing fans for going to games because you do like management and want to boycott the team is narrow minded. Heck, Braves’ fans could do the same thing, based on the most recent performance of Braves’ management and ownership. That won’t change anything.

I would suggest confirming how the old couple feels about being nominated. Their feelings could be like this: “If nominated, we will not run. If elected, we will not serve.” (Paraphrasing LBJ)

Or perhaps they would be enthusiastic about it or at least not mind participating in the contest. (My apologies if their consent has already been obtained.)
