NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza 2010

Well kids…its Wednesday March 3, 2010 and NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza 2010 is reaching its much-anticipated climax. Here in Thrasherville, we’ve already witnessed a few moves already by the organization…the trade that brought in Evgeny Artyukhin from the Ducks Monday night and the signing of Chris Chelios Tuesday. And while the Chelios move wasn’t necessarily a “trade”…it may be the precursor of something that will come down later today.

Does it mean somebody like Pavel Kubina or Ron Hainsey is being shipped out, and Chelios is heading this way to fill the roster spot? Or is it like what Don Waddell said…he’s simply there in case of an emergency situation. I guess time will tell.

As the day progresses, I will update this blog post with news related to any Thrashers trades and or any other news of interest. It’ll be down below under the heading “Trade Deadline Updates”.

Pavel Kubina battles Florida's Gregory Campbell along the boards Tuesday night. But will Kubina be a Thrasher after today? Well...stay tuned. (AP Photo/Gregory Smith)

Oh, and let’s not forget last night’s 4-2 win against the Panthers…a game that saw Todd White score the game-winner on the power play during the third period. I guess Whitey picked a pretty good spot to net his one goal for the month of March, wouldn’t you say?

Johan Hedberg stopped 34 of 36 shots to earn win number 15 on the season… Rich Peverley scored the games opening goal, his nineteenth of the season…and two players that many have speculated  will not be residents of Thrasherville after today also scored, Armstrong and Kubina.

With the win, Atlanta moved Atlanta into tenth in the east over Tampa Bay, who were thumped by Philly 7-2 Tuesday night. The Thrashers are but one point behind the Rangers and Boston, who hold 8th and 9t place in the Eastern Conference as the Bruins lost 4-1 to Montreal and New York beat Ottawa by the same score.

So with that…let’s sit back and watch as today’s NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza unfolds during what could be a very interesting day indeed.

TRADE DEADLINE UPDATES

:!: 10:45 am – Per Ben Wright’s twitter…”Despite Chelios signing, just told that Thrashers are not interested at all in dealing Pavel Kubina”

:!: 12:41 pm – Per c-viv’s twitter…”Slava Kozlov says he may play in KHL next year if not in NHL”.

:!: 2:39 pm - Thrashers and Sabres make a trade. To Atlanta, forward Clarke MacArthur…to Buffalo, 3rd and 4th round pick.

The Florida Panthers? One team that is, remarkably, worse than the Atlanta Thrashers…It’s amazing how giddy some are for achieving a “goal” where over half the teams meet the criteria every year.

Here are the fruits of your ten-year plan–and all that ‘building through the draft!’.

Wow. Well, you know what the old saying is: You get what you deserve.

Indeed, you do. You’ve accepted this abomination–and actually subsidized it. The laughable even try to ‘defend’ it!

Maybe that blustering fraud of a GM we have will do better this next decade? He can hardly to worse…

Chicago and Toronto looked horrible last night, I mean real bad. Toronto lost to Carolina, the Canes held the puck in the 2nd period on the Leafs’ zone for over 2 minutes, looked like a 5-3 power play at even strength. Chicago’s goaltending is awful at best against the scoring-challenged Islanders. Serves the Hawks right for overpaying Huet and Campbell, they have no room to move.

Nice to see Ray Shero doing what he needs to improve his team without giving up an no. 1 pick or a core player. He’s showing people how it’s done. All his deals were completed before the last day. He can sit back and watch people overpay today.

The Thrashers beat the Panthers??? Are you kidding me?? The Panthers?? Seriously??

Florida is a team the Thrashers SHOULD beat…..so as you can se, it’s all a hideous plot by the Spirit Grroups and Don Waddell to get you to come to Blueland! It’s just a trick to get more of your money.

They know if the Thrashers win, against teams they SHOULD win against, they just might make the playoffs. In doing so attendance will rise and if, God forbid, they do make postseason, that’s just a few more games they can fleece you of your money.

Don’t subsidize the incompetency. If they continue to win, don’t fall for the ploy.

Smitty is quite right about Ponikarovsky. Really, if that was all it took to get him, DW could easily have matched it. Schubert, Cormier and maybe a 3rd or 2nd round pick would have been enough. Luca Caputi is a high risk prospect in that the odds are pretty high that he’ll be another Erik Christensen type player and nothing more. I hope DW has something decent in the works because I remain unconvinced that the team can make the playoffs without adding another top 6 forward.

Toby-any of those players would look good in a Thrashers’ uniform for the game tomorrow night against the Long Gi-landers.

Not a bad trade for the Leafs. As Toby noted, Caputi is a good prospect vs a draft pick which is rolling the dice. How good is Pittsburgh’s scouting? Caputi was a 4th round pick.

Smitty’s point is based on the fact that Shero did not give up a roster player to get Poni. Looks like Pitt’s roster is starting to hit their stride, now they have a 6′4″ winger to play on one of their top 3 lines.

…yes, the Thrash should have beaten the Panthers. But they can be challenging, and a win is a win is a win. I was not thrilled with the pace of the game — both teams looked sluggish and to put it frankly Clemmensen sucked. I was also not thrilled that some of our usually more active players were practically invisible. And Toby Enstrom was off, though an off night for Toby is still a pretty good night. But I was totally thrilled to see Peverly and White on the upswing — I’ve been worried about both.

Hopefully that relatively easy win will pave the way for some crucial wins in the weeks to come.

Frenchy – I stopped watching the women’s gold medal game as soon as it was over (man, that was some bad hockey – looked like 2 US high school teams playing), but there were plenty of boos from the Canadian crowds at ALL games the US men played in the tournament. You probably heard the 1000 or so US fans cheering during the medal ceremony. Frankly, as a viewer if I took anything away from the Olympics it’s that Canada hates the USA a lot. I can’t answer where this comes from, but I would like to remind you of the incident a few years ago where Montreal fans booed the US national anthem during a Canadiens game. Thanks Canada. Appreciate that. We keep your border safe so you can spend pennies on national defense and all we get out of it is hate. Thanks.

DWTOO – thanks, I appreciate the feedback! Glad you like the content even if the lion-cut hell cat was a bit much to stomach. But alas, we are done with the Panthers this season…thank goodness.

According to David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, ATL along with LA were linked as having strong interest in Ponikarovsky (duh). I’m glad DWad stuck to his guns as we should have a realistic shot at him in UFA if necessary this summer. Would rather have Wolski or Versteeg due to their RFA status and upside, but for the right price, I’m okay with a rental. We have tons of cap room to play with in July.

Go Thrash!

PS – We didn’t play all that well last night and still took care of business. Good to finally see some fruit harvested on the PP and the D put the clamps on in the 2nd half of the 3rd after staying pretty aggressive on the forecheck. Gotta beat the Isles now!

Team looked good last night considering the layoff; it was an easier win than most of our other wins. In the last 30 minutes of the game the power play produced some good chances, the defense played adequate and Hedberg did his part. Overall, the Panthers are a team we should beat and we beat them, not easily, but close to it.

Frenchy, read the Canadian blogs, CBC Nightly News or any newspaper in Canada. America bashing is their favorite exercise. It’s been going on for years. Betcha most of the people yelling “USA” at the women’s game were Americans.

If I remember well, your fans in Montreal booed the American anthem loudly when the US invaded Iraq to depose Sadaam Hussein. Could you imagine what the Canadian reaction would have been if we did the same?

I am sure you’re a nice person and I appreciate your posts on this blog. But I can’t avoid the obvious; sick and tired of hearing what a great NHL city Hamilton and Regina would be and that we have to give up our team so they can stop crying like little babies.

One thing that Thrashers needs to do is to find out if they are seller or buyer. If they are seller, then most likely we would needs to forget about playoff this season. If we’re buyer, then there’s no needs to trade players such as Kubina, Armstrong or Max because most likely, if we trade those player, we’re not getting better. Whatever you get from trading Armstrong would not equal Armstrong. Sames goes to Kubina and Max. Alright Rawhide (and guests), I’m going to need your help today. Poor FIF is stuck trying a case all day and can’t close the door to his office to watch the live feed as he normally does. As a result, he is reliant on me to text him all of the juicy trade updates…which means I am reliant on all of you guys to keep this blog updated since I am not especially adept at finding alternative hockey news sites that are not blocked on my work computer.

That being said, was the “Ward to Anaheim” comment above Cam Ward from the Hurricanes getting traded to the Ducks??

Alan Muir in his last power ranking intimated that Colby had fallen out of favor with John Anderson. He’s got all of 6 goals and 17 assists and is a -15 this season with a year still remaining on his contract.

This isn’t a crack on Whitey in as much as it is on Don Waddell who paid $2.4 million for 4 seasons for touting him as a top line center.

Every room needs a good resident class clown!! Well, we’ve got Boulton, the funniest player ever in Boultsy’s mind.

Bob

March 3rd, 2010
3:25 pm

Alright, now it’s settling down, remember this in the future. Kubina was never going to be moved, you don’t move your best dman while you’re in a playoff run. Which is precisely the same reason that Sharp wasn’t moved from Chicago. They are built for their Cup run this year, you don’t fret about Cap issues, you go for the Cup and then sort it out this summer.

I think the lack of movement was a perfect storm of so many teams being close to the playoffs, the Olympic break, and the Cap issues of teams in the hunt.

I like the moves the Thrashers’ made (and didn’t make). Keep Colby for the run and we got some more juice in a couple forwards with some power. Who’s your votes for the press box? Obviously Kozlov stays there, but I’d like to see the MacArthur displace White and mabye the Ruskie displaces Boulton in the games against tougher squads?

Are you… Thrilled? Confused? Resigned? Disgruntled?

Rutherford wasn’t done! He also dealt Stephane Yelle and Harrison Reed to Colorado for C Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll and a sixth-round pick.

Saw that too Badger… we’re hitting all the same spots today. LOL.

I’m still curious how Army feels… we’ll probably never know until it shakes out on July 1st.

@armdog “We didn’t lose anyone today and got a western boy!! Sick!! Can never have enough!! Hahaha.”

Colby seems pretty happy and relieved he didn’t get traded and we brought in some Western CA grit.

Out of the 10 expiring contracts, 5 are the following:

Boulton
Slava
Popovic
Schubert
Hedberg (with all due respect, he’ll be 37)

All of these players we can live without if Mannino pans out and Pavelec progresses. But we’ll have $ for a goalie in UFA.

The other 5 expiring contracts are:

Kubina – in the process?
Colby – may not want to stay
Slates – perhaps expendable but very sign-able
????
????

Who am I missing?

Red Light-it is easier to egt more when you are dumping players for hte future. Our people went into this stating they were in it for a playoff run. The General will help.

I think Colby may want to stay in Atl. He’s got a good thing going with Slates and Kane. He may be happier here than we think.

Wow, looks like we’ll be playing Cam Ward, Eric Staal and the Albany River Rats on Sunday! Watch them beat us. They have actually been playing really well since we beat them 5 to 3 in Raleigh.

Imagine, playing on a line with Crosby and Iginla winning gold one day, suiting up with a half-AHL line up the next. Sorry, Eric Staal…

Duh, mental overload. Max, of course! We may be able to bring him back, but let’s be reasonable, no one expected to have him next season. But then again, no one expected a 60-65 point season either! Let’s hope Dementieva likes visiting Atlanta!

As for Arty, we shall see, but in all likelihood, it won’t be a big loss. The core is in place and with a few key re-signings as well as 2 or 3 shrewd UFA signings this summer, this team could be coming into its own over the next couple of seasons.

Red Light, we’ve already seen we got better (chemistry, at the least) with those deals in the short term. Looking at next year’s roster, and assuming we don’t re-sign the UFAs we got or traded away, I see we’ve acquired 3-4 players who suit up here (Oduya, Bergie, the General, plus Cormier or Vish?), 1-2 players suiting up in Chicago (Cormier and/or Vish?), plus a low 1st round pick, while losing Salmela and Osytrick. Looks okay to me. Not thrilling, but younger and tougher isn’t such a bad thing.

McPhee deserved credit for the team he assembled last year. And this one surpasses that one. No one ever said repeating was easy, if you’re Pittsburgh. But the Penguins did well, too. I think Buffalo got better with Raffi Torres.

The amazing move of the deadline was the Islanders finding a home for Mandy in Ottawa. Stunning. I have to give the Isles some credit on that one.

kracker- i gto the copyright for the R2 ;-)

As for MacArthur, what a trade! He’s at least woth a second rounder! Anyways we werent going to do anything with those 3rds and 4ths since we have like 3 in the top 60. But the R2 pickup makes me wonder… If he plays with pevs and finy then great! But i dont want him battling with Thorbs for the 4th line spot, cause Thorbs is the hardest workin player ! Here’s my projected depth chart ATD (after trade-deadline)

Same 1st
MacA- Pevs- FInn
Kane-slater-army
R2-reasoner-Tjorbs

White, Kozzy waived, Boulton sits till army gets out then R2 takes his place as the 3rd RW.

Same D with Cheli comming in at the end of the year + playoffs if he pklays well

Yung JB – check, you get the copyright on R2 for Artyukhin. Looking over the Thrashers roster I don’t see anyone we can nickname as D2…thinking about a Star Wars line. Considering this team’s history, I’m good with picking up Darth Vader if he can bring a healthy dose the Force from the Dark Side. I nominate Todd White as Yoda lol…cept Yoda probably has a lot better wrister.

World – I hear ya man, work won’t be the same…it will be WORK! Ugggh, but at least we have a game to look forward to. Just hope we don’t go up against the same Roloson that stopped 41 shots in Chicago! Rolo is old and he needs he rest…perhaps we get Biron.

BTW, since Kovy’s departure, this team has averaged a hair over 34 shots per game. Better yet, they’ve been eclipsing the ever important 10% shooting mark more often than not. Let’s see, adding in my head, we have 18 goals (19 if you include Kaner’s EN) in 6 games. Take away the WSH game in which we only had 2 goals on 45 shots and that’s 16 goals in 5 games or 3.2 per. In those 5 games, we’ve averaged around 32 SOG and whatta ya know? 3.2 / 32 = 10%

Keep that up along with the goaltending we’ve been getting since January 6th and you end up with quite a few more wins. 1 down, 12 more to go!! 12 out of 21 doesn’t seem so daunting does it? ;-)
