NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza 2010

Well kids…its Wednesday March 3, 2010 and NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza 2010 is reaching its much-anticipated climax. Here in Thrasherville, we’ve already witnessed a few moves already by the organization…the trade that brought in Evgeny Artyukhin from the Ducks Monday night and the signing of Chris Chelios Tuesday. And while the Chelios move wasn’t necessarily a “trade”…it may be the precursor of something that will come down later today.

Does it mean somebody like Pavel Kubina or Ron Hainsey is being shipped out, and Chelios is heading this way to fill the roster spot? Or is it like what Don Waddell said…he’s simply there in case of an emergency situation. I guess time will tell.

As the day progresses, I will update this blog post with news related to any Thrashers trades and or any other news of interest. It’ll be down below under the heading “Trade Deadline Updates”.

Oh, and let’s not forget last night’s 4-2 win against the Panthers…a game that saw Todd White score the game-winner on the power play during the third period. I guess Whitey picked a pretty good spot to net his one goal for the month of March, wouldn’t you say?

Johan Hedberg stopped 34 of 36 shots to earn win number 15 on the season… Rich Peverley scored the games opening goal, his nineteenth of the season…and two players that many have speculated  will not be residents of Thrasherville after today also scored, Armstrong and Kubina.

With the win, Atlanta moved Atlanta into tenth in the east over Tampa Bay, who were thumped by Philly 7-2 Tuesday night. The Thrashers are but one point behind the Rangers and Boston, who hold 8th and 9t place in the Eastern Conference as the Bruins lost 4-1 to Montreal and New York beat Ottawa by the same score.

So with that…let’s sit back and watch as today’s NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza unfolds during what could be a very interesting day indeed.

TRADE DEADLINE UPDATES

:!: 10:45 am – Per Ben Wright’s twitter…”Despite Chelios signing, just told that Thrashers are not interested at all in dealing Pavel Kubina”

:!: 12:41 pm – Per c-viv’s twitter…”Slava Kozlov says he may play in KHL next year if not in NHL”.

:!: 2:39 pm - Thrashers and Sabres make a trade. To Atlanta, forward Clarke MacArthur…to Buffalo, 3rd and 4th round pick.

McArthur RFA this year.

He’s a better pick-up than any of the prior “minor” deals he’s made. You’ll like this guy. Trust me.

A winger, huh? 5′11″ and 191 lbs. Is a -14…potential?? Maybe Mr. Cunneyworth knows something we don’t…

TableHockey – Yes…and for half the money too. He’s currently in the last year of a contract that earns him $1.4 mil. He’ll be an RFA this summer.

That’s BS if the Caps are allowed to take back Milan Jurcina…thought that wasn’t allowed under the terms of the CBA??

Two picks for MacArthur…I don’t know about that.

Stempniak on deck…could he become a Thrasher?

Nah, doubt it.

MacArthur has more goals and assists than Colby at reportedly a million per year less.

Pierre says kozzy and Colby are still in play. He also said there were 12 deals announced after the 3 PM deadline last year due to the league having to confirm everything.

well friends, this is a special one for Sabres/Thrashers fans, a trade between our 2 teams and I like this one alot.

Clarke “The General” MacArthur is a pretty good player. I have never had an issue with the dude, I think he’ll be a good acquisition.

Can’t go wrong with RFA and Youth. Plus most 3rd and 4th pick translate into emptiness anyway.

You guys need to find a new mule to beat, ’cause this one’s dead. Seriously, Whitey was a +2 last night. It’d be pretty killer if he made up for the rest of the season by playing a great last portion. And I would say the same of Bogosian, Koz, and Peverly. Every game’s a new game at this point.

I like Clarke’s shooting % of 13.1…we need more of that. I can live with this if Cunneyworth can find the right niche for him. But with Colby supposedly staying put, does this mean Slater’s in trouble?

Did we send Slates somewhere along with a prospect for a scoring LW?

Apparently not, C-Viv says we’re done dealin’…Kozlov stays. WTF?

I would’ve been happy with a 7th rounder for Slava after his comments.

Why the hell would Johnny play him now after adding Arty 1 and Arty 2?

Wow! Caps get Corvo too! Yikes, if the chemistry works, Caps will be tough to beat. Guess we’re out in 4 games if we don’t get that 7th seed!

Seriously, does WSH have the cap room for all of these moves?

Rawhide

Nikita – I appreciate what it is you’re sayin’…and White did have a good game last night. But the sad truth here is that in almost 3 seasons with the Thrashers, he has played in 211 games scoring 42 goals and 91 assists. He’s a collective -36 in those games.

He’s got all of 6 goals and 17 assists and is a -15 this season with a year still remaining on his contract.

This isn’t a crack on Whitey in as much as it is on Don Waddell who paid $2.4 million for 4 seasons for touting him as a top line center.

Sorry…but that mule is still alive and kickin’ IMHO.

wonder if there’s a late deal we haven’t heard of yet from Waddell? If not, it seems a little strange to bring in two forwards and not have moved anyone. Waive Kozlov and White?

WBF – shrewd move by Waddell…the chemistry between Kaner, Colbs and Slates is too good right now. Make Colby earn his next deal. He’s already overpaid at $2.4 M and perhaps he’ll get his come-uppance in UFA this summer. Tail between the legs return to ATL?

Every room needs a good resident class clown!! Well, we’ve got Boulton, the funniest player ever in Boultsy’s mind.

Alright, now it’s settling down, remember this in the future. Kubina was never going to be moved, you don’t move your best dman while you’re in a playoff run. Which is precisely the same reason that Sharp wasn’t moved from Chicago. They are built for their Cup run this year, you don’t fret about Cap issues, you go for the Cup and then sort it out this summer.

I think the lack of movement was a perfect storm of so many teams being close to the playoffs, the Olympic break, and the Cap issues of teams in the hunt.

I like the moves the Thrashers’ made (and didn’t make). Keep Colby for the run and we got some more juice in a couple forwards with some power. Who’s your votes for the press box? Obviously Kozlov stays there, but I’d like to see the MacArthur displace White and mabye the Ruskie displaces Boulton in the games against tougher squads?

Smoothie

So, Stempniak, Morris and Wolski to the Coyotes…hmmm, does this make them legit? Still gonna struggle with goal-scoring I think. Lee is a bit “charmin-y” for the West Coast league, is he not? Perhaps Wolski will have a resurgence.

Anyone think Slava’s headed for CHI-town when Cheli gets the call-up?

Washington adds 5.75M in salary with 4 additions and one subtraction (with 2.1 in cap space?). WASH is armed to the teeth for a long run. We were 4 and gone vs them before today anyway.

Smoothie-he’s young and an RFA vs a UFA this summer which means he will be around. I have no issues with Clarke, like I do other Sabres forwards Pominville/Roy/Stafford- all stiffs!

You tell me who the best GM in the game is? I say McPhee. He gets Corvo, Jurcina, Belanger and Walker, not stars, but key components for a Cup run with experience, and gives up not a lot. Plus, the rentals mean he still has cap space available to sign Backstrom, Fehr, Fleischman, etc. to long term deals this summer. Great performance.

Red Light – true. All good moves. They should be an obvious favorite and almost mortal lock for the Cup finals.

Badger – that was tongue in cheek, bien sur! I just want to get there for momentum’s sake and to bolster the confidence o’ the young-uns.

World – he does seem to have the game that suits our system. Plus, his hands must be very good to have a career 15% shooting avg…me likey. This is much better than Stafford or Pommer, but Roy a stiff? A diver and a whiner maybe, but he’s got skillz, don’t ya think?
