NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza 2010

Well kids…its Wednesday March 3, 2010 and NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza 2010 is reaching its much-anticipated climax. Here in Thrasherville, we’ve already witnessed a few moves already by the organization…the trade that brought in Evgeny Artyukhin from the Ducks Monday night and the signing of Chris Chelios Tuesday. And while the Chelios move wasn’t necessarily a “trade”…it may be the precursor of something that will come down later today.

Does it mean somebody like Pavel Kubina or Ron Hainsey is being shipped out, and Chelios is heading this way to fill the roster spot? Or is it like what Don Waddell said…he’s simply there in case of an emergency situation. I guess time will tell.

As the day progresses, I will update this blog post with news related to any Thrashers trades and or any other news of interest. It’ll be down below under the heading “Trade Deadline Updates”.

Oh, and let’s not forget last night’s 4-2 win against the Panthers…a game that saw Todd White score the game-winner on the power play during the third period. I guess Whitey picked a pretty good spot to net his one goal for the month of March, wouldn’t you say?

Johan Hedberg stopped 34 of 36 shots to earn win number 15 on the season… Rich Peverley scored the games opening goal, his nineteenth of the season…and two players that many have speculated  will not be residents of Thrasherville after today also scored, Armstrong and Kubina.

With the win, Atlanta moved Atlanta into tenth in the east over Tampa Bay, who were thumped by Philly 7-2 Tuesday night. The Thrashers are but one point behind the Rangers and Boston, who hold 8th and 9t place in the Eastern Conference as the Bruins lost 4-1 to Montreal and New York beat Ottawa by the same score.

So with that…let’s sit back and watch as today’s NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza unfolds during what could be a very interesting day indeed.

TRADE DEADLINE UPDATES

:!: 10:45 am – Per Ben Wright’s twitter…”Despite Chelios signing, just told that Thrashers are not interested at all in dealing Pavel Kubina”

:!: 12:41 pm – Per c-viv’s twitter…”Slava Kozlov says he may play in KHL next year if not in NHL”.

:!: 2:39 pm - Thrashers and Sabres make a trade. To Atlanta, forward Clarke MacArthur…to Buffalo, 3rd and 4th round pick.

Seidenberg to Boston…that makes their blueline a bit tougher, but meh, we worked S’berg good last night. Boston will not like playing against us the next time with Arty, Bergie and _______ in the line up.

In the S’berg deal, another 2nd round pick swapped. No one will have their original 2nd round pick left by the time its all said and done.

yeah Smoothie – I keep waiting for “second round pick” to trend on Twitter. Seems like most every deal has been for a 2nd.

Kevin Allen tweets: “Because you asked: the Thrashers have never had any intention of trading Kubina or Afinogenov. They want to re-sign them.”

Let’s hope this happens. I’m fine with the way Fins has been playing. He hustles back on D, tries to support the blueliners so he’s ready to pounce on a loose puck (see our first goal last night). Now that Kovy’s gone, Fins seems to be doing what Anderson is asking of him. Perhaps he was getting sick of Kovy’s antics too. Although he made Kovy look good in the Olympics and vice versa.

Let’s hope CAR unloads a few more vets: Whitney & Corvo namely.

Or is Whitney done? Did I miss something when I was actually working?

One thing that Thrashers needs to do is to find out if they are seller or buyer. If they are seller, then most likely we would needs to forget about playoff this season. If we’re buyer, then there’s no needs to trade players such as Kubina, Armstrong or Max because most likely, if we trade those player, we’re not getting better. Whatever you get from trading Armstrong would not equal Armstrong. Sames goes to Kubina and Max. There is really no points in trading value to get lesser value and then trade lesser value to get value.

Eklund Flyers big on Colby Armstrong (e3), Mueller to Atlanta (e4), Lightning moving Halpern,

Please, please, please be true… Kozlov and a pick to Phoenix for Mueller? That’s what I’m hoping.

So, with Ward going to Anaheim and Seidenberg to Boston, any Kubina deal is now less likely right? Everyone is now saying he’s up for an extension and the Thrashers had no intention of dealing him. I still say it ain’t over ’til it’s over.

My predictions were:
Kubina: to Ana, Bos, Buf, Det or Pit
Armstrong: to Bos, TB, Phl or Mtl

Mueller is 21 and has a cap hit of $1.7 million. He had 22-32 as a rookie, 13-23 last season and just 4-13 so far this year. 1st round pick, 8th overall in 2006 from Bloomington, Minn.

Thanks for being a good dude for a long time Slava. He stayed when so many players wanted out of Atlanta. Something to be said for that.

Beware of the lurking George McPhee of Washington. I’ll bet he has something up his sleeve before this is all over. He’s got about $5 million in cap room and a few pieces in Hershey he can move if necessary.

I think it’s going to end up being Kozlov and NJ’s 1st round pick to Phoenix for Peter Mueller… just call it a hunch.

Don’t know what happened to Mueller this year, but the guy is talented… he might just be lazy and needs a kick in the pants. Shane Doan has always been “glowing” about Mueller, saying “I’m his biggest fan”. He has great hands, and a quick release.

GaVaHokie – OR the Coyotes are using us to up the ante on Mueller by leaking that we are close. I think he’d be a good fit though.

Detroit keeps coming up in the Kozlov talks – wonder what they are willing to part with? Jason Williams perhaps? LOL.

If we’re going to consider giving up that # 1 pick from NJ, then I’d rather it be for Wolski than Mueller. I know Mueller might have great upside, but if we can get Wolski for a high prospect & the # 1, then that’s great. Hold on to Colby A and try to get a 2nd rounder for him at the draft. The chemistry on the Kane – Slates – Army line may be too good to disrupt.

God, please no Jason Williams!!! I’d rather have Todd Bertuzzi. Well, not quite. No trades with DET under any circumstances.

Christy – doesn’t that just get your dander up! I know JA is not above criticism, but the stats and reality doesn’t jibe with anything Kozzie’s asserting. Fading star whining in the press…pathetic.

I have a feeling we’re gonna be in for a nice surprise, but it’s so hard to tell at this point. The best thing is we’re in a very good position of leverage and we don’t really have to do anything other than dispose of Mr. Kozlov.

Table – no you’re right. The recurring theme is that Colby is un-signable as a UFA. However, no one is ready to fully commit to the idea that he will definitely get traded today. He played really well last night and the chemistry with that line is unmistakable. Plus, he always has good chem with buddy Pevs as well. We’d have lots of options if we could bring in another scoring winger. BUT, he’s our most valuable asset. We may have no choice.

I just hope Slava is willing to waive his NTC to go to Phoenix.

Two tweets that I’ve seen that bring me to the Mueller/Kozlov conclusion… Phoenix is “kicking the tires” on Kozlov… and ATL is willing to part with NJ 1st.

And he can really punch the crap out of you when you’re not expecting it — Walker that is. Just ask Aaron Ward.

Alright Rawhide (and guests), I’m going to need your help today. Poor FIF is stuck trying a case all day and can’t close the door to his office to watch the live feed as he normally does. As a result, he is reliant on me to text him all of the juicy trade updates…which means I am reliant on all of you guys to keep this blog updated since I am not especially adept at finding alternative hockey news sites that are not blocked on my work computer.

That being said, was the “Ward to Anaheim” comment above Cam Ward from the Hurricanes getting traded to the Ducks??
