Ok, so tell me…what is it with the Atlanta Thrashers and Buffalo Sabres having to play every game into overtime? Thursday night’s contest was …what…the seventh time in the last eigh games that the two have needed more than 60 minutes to decide things?
Let’s see…the two of the three times so far this season, then all four last year and the last meeting of the 2007-08 season that the Thrashers won 5-4 in a shootout. And before that, then the last time the Thrashers and Sabres played a game that did not go into overtime was, if I’m not mistaken, back in January of 2008 when…oh yea, that was the 10-1 beat-down in Buffalo.
Ok…I’m fine with OT, then.

Ondrej Pavelec makes one of the 30 saves Thursday night against the Sabres (John Bazemore / AP)
Thursday night’s 2-1 loss in overtime was disappointing, obviously…but I have to say it’s one of the best-played, most entertaining hockey games I’ve been to all season. The Thrashers played a lot of minutes in Buffalo’s zone… they kept the tempo and pressure up all night… the defense had a solid outing, holding the opposition to just 13 shots in the first 40 minutes of play and 26 during regulation.
But as well as the Thrashers played against a very good Sabres team, and as welcome any points are in the standings, seeing Buffalo skate away with that second point is a giant suck-burger. Just ask John Anderson.
“If you look at the two teams and who could afford [to lose] the [extra] point most, it wasn’t us,” Anderson said after the game. “We need every point we can get right now. It would have been great, but you are really pushing the envelope when you are short-handed that long”.
Ondrej Pavelec was really on his game for much of the night…continuing from the fine outing last Tuesday against Ottawa. He stopped 30 of the 32 shots he faced on this night after turning aside 30 of 31 in the 6-1 win over the Senators.
That’s 60 saves on the last 63 shots he’s faced. Nice to see the kid back on top his game.
On the other side of the ice was that Ryan Miller character. In case you haven’t heard, this guy is good great fantastic awesome. All he did was deny the Thrashers 32 times on 33 shots. He didn’t have to face any during overtime, as the Sabres pretty much played the entire two and a half minutes of extra time killing off penalties.
I tell ya what, I can’t wait until next month during the Winter Olympics when I can actually root for this guy as he mans the nets for team USA. If we are going to medal during these games, he and Tim Thomas are going to be the main reasons why.
Both squads did a good job killing penalties…each team being successful 6 times on 7 PK situations. As stated above, it was an overtime 4 on 3 power play goal that won it for Buffalo, Derek Roy with the honors. Ilya Kovalchuk scored Atlanta’s goal while on the man advantage during the second period. His wrister from the left side tied the game with 3:18 left in the second while Chris Butler sat in shame in the sin-bin for high sticking.
The only 5 on 5 goal was scored earlier in the second period when Pavelec was unable to move quickly enough from the right to left post to deal with Patrick Kaleta’s shot. Kaleta was left all alone over on that side and put the puck up high as Opie went down to the ice on his attempt to get over in time.
With the outcome, Atlanta finished up the homestand 2-1-1. Outside of that steaming pile that was left out on the ice last Saturday against the Capitals, they played well for the most part this past week. Two wins over teams we are jockeying with for position in the Eastern Conference and an overtime charity point against a Sabres team that is now 29-11-5.
The Thrashers now head to Carolina for a Saturday game and then make their way to south Florida to play the panthers Monday night before returning to Thrasherville for ames against Toronto and the Canes next week.

Rich Peverley has scored, from Boulton, to make it, 3-1, for the Thrashers. Still time left in the 2nd period.

They awarded an assist to Slave Kozlov on the Peverley goal. Peverley has two points, (1G, 1A) as Bogosian, (1G, 1A). Zach Bogosian is a +3, thus far, in this game.

The Buffalo Sabres just lost to the NY Islanders, in an 8-round shootout. Sabres did well to make a nice comeback in this game. But, in the big scheme of things, they shouldn’t be losing games to the Islanders, or tossing pity points to the Thrashers. That’ll catch up to them, if it continues. Sabres play at Phoenix next. And make no mistake about it, that’ll be a real test for Buffalo. Are they going to battle for #2 overall? Or will they fall back to 6th or so, as the rest of the season rolls along. I guess a lot of it will depend on how the Olympics go for Ryan Miller.
The 3rd period has started, it’s still 3-1, Thrashers.

Anybody else getting tired of Afinegenov streaking in-NOT SHOOTING-then pulling up to pass for a one-timer?
He just did that with Z-Bo as the trailer-big shot, missed the net caromed halfway up the boards resulting in an odd-man rush the other way.
Not to be too critical, but it drives me bananas.
Also, I call shannanigans on the 5-on-3 this time I agree with DE; If Valabik goes, Staal should sit as well. Big PK sequence here.

ZOMG
You know that Kovalchuk feller-he can really shoot that puck.
Something good seems to be brewing-he’s been playing like himself lately as opposed to that other guy who was wearing #17 in December.

All of the failures of this franchise fall directly on the owners. The Atlanta community had a hockey gold mine with the Thrashers. The fans from Atlanta and all over North America were committed to supporting this team. The only problem is that our owners were NEVER committed to bringing winning hockey to Atlanta.
We have been scammed by a group that never cared. To these clowns, gangster basketball comes first and foremost. They do not give a damn about hockey. They should have never been allowed to have a franchise.
We can blame Waddell, but the real culprits are the owners that kept him as the GM for a decade. The latest debacle? This charade concerning the captain’s contract that has screwed this team for much of the season. Incompetence from top to bottom.
Add to this the TOTAL stupidity of the press in U.S. and Canada for not realizing what’s going on here. The idiots on Hockey Night in Canada blame us for not buying tickets to this joke. Only Toronto hockey fans are stupid enough to feel obligated to buy hockey trash.
The anti-Thrasher posters on this blog are right, they have been right all along. I give you guys credit for telling it like it is, not sugar coating the facts for the sheep.

The Thrashers give up two quick PPG’s to the ‘Canes, thanks to some questionable officiating on Boris. JA mouthed the words, “WTF?” But, as Tony C. says, that there “Kovalchuk feller” can shoot the puck. Kovalchuk’s goal has Atlanta back in the lead, 4-3. Plenty of time left, however.

Antropov scored his 12th of the season, into the empty net, from Kovalchuk. Atlanta will win this one, 5-3. Barring something in this 14.7 that remains.

Zach Bogosian finished a +4 in this game. Each of the following Thrashers had a goal AND an assist tonight: Jim Slater, Nik Antropov, Ilya Kovalchuk, Rich Peverley, and Zach Bogosian. The following Thrashers were a +2 tonight: Enstrom, Antropov, Kovy, Hainsey and Bogosian

Great to get a regulation time road win.
Hot Stove guys covered Kovy’s accomplishments over the past 6 seasons. They seem to think he’s worth th $10M+ it will take to keep him here. Will ASG pony up? They seem to for the Hawks. Time to make some decisions folks.
Hey Brenden, Buffalo is not that good. We saw that Thursday night. They play good defense and have a great goalie. They don’t score alotta goals. Too many guys like Pominville and Hecht not earning their money. Figures you would remember 1999.

Excellent game, good goaltending, Good offense.
Good hustle tonight by everyone ! Good to see !
Terrible ref’s though, the call on Boris was just disgraceful, should be double minor or nothing.
I wonder if these ref’s EVER get called on the carpet or suspended ?
They have not been very good this season !

I remember ‘99, only insofaras a non-traditional market was awarded the decision, WBF. The Sabres impress me. I had them pegged for 10th place this year. So, obviously, I was way offbase about them. Tyler Myers has been a revelation. And MacArthur Park continues to plug away. Vanek needs to become a 40-50 goal scorer, though. He is making $7.12 million-a-year.

This is your official 10-minute Ranallo Warning!!!
And if Mr. Ranallo10 (in AT) doesn’t check in soon, we are going to have to place him on a milk carton.
