Thrasherville NHL Team Adoption Center

Sheeze! Has the Thrashers schedule early on been aggravating or what?

Five days in between the first game and the second game…then our patience was rewarded with a pair of games toward the end of last week…but now we are dealing with six days in between the 4-2 loss in Ottawa and the next game scheduled for this Friday in New Jersey.

Thrasherville won’t host another home game until the 22nd when the Caps come to town.

However, I do have my NHL Center Ice…and for that, I am truly thankful. Without this wonderful gift from the hockey gods, I might just have gone stir-crazy by now.

Because of the Center Ice package, one of the things I’m able to do is follow the teams out west that we don’t get to see very often play in Atlanta. And, as I normally do, I tend to focus in on one particular team and “adopt” them as my second team. Naturally, the Flames are one that I, as well as many others, keep an eye on given their roots. But I also like to choose another squad as well… one that is poised to make a run for the Cup or a team that is making great strides to get back into contention after a re-building period.

For the past few years, the team I have chosen to take on has been the San Jose Sharks. They’ve been stacked with quality players and have been positioned to contend for the championship over the course of the last couple of years. Their fans are super, supporting them the way they do, and all of the ones I’ve ever met are classy people…so that helps.

But their recent playoff shortcomings have me considering a different team in which to give my attention.

Possible selections are…

Chicago Blackhawks: Great run in last spring’s playoffs and exciting to watch. Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp are all entertaining players as well. But they seem to be the chic team that many people are bandwagon-ing.

Edmonton Oilers: Could be a very interesting team to follow as they look to make a return trip to the postseason for the first time since 2006. Mike Comrie, Shawn Horcoff and Dustin Penner have gotten the Oilers off to a 3-1-1 start.

Minnesota Wild: They fell just shy of that 8th and final spot last April…and I gotta tell ya, I love Minnesota hockey fans…Oh Yeah, you betcha! I’d pull for them for that reason alone.

Colorado Avalanche: Here’s an interesting story in the making…69 points last season and rock bottom in the Western Conference standings. However, are off to a 4-1-1 and seem to have found the answer to the question between the pipes. Craig Anderson now possesses a 1.98 GAA and .940 SV% after the Avs’ 4-1 win in Toronto Tuesday night.

Phoenix Coyotes: Certainly some could argue that they get the sympathy vote given what they’ve been through lately.

Detroit Red Wings: While there are many who’d take in the Winged Wheels…given their hometown loyalties and all…I just can’t seem to bring myself to root regularly for the Big Red Borg. Besides, if you saw their recent loss to Buffalo, they just look old and slow right now. Could the past several years being catching up with them?

Regardless, if you have a team you’ve decided to adopt this season, let me know. I’m still trying to decide myself.

Big Blow Out Thrashers Viewing Party At TJ’s Saturday

The Thrashers play in Buffalo on Saturday night, but its not being aired on local TV….again. If you don’t have Center Ice, it’s yet another night of not being able to watch our team play.

Unless….

You get your lazy carcass up off the couch after an afternoon of watching college football and make your way over TJ’s Bar and Grill for what promises to be an exciting, fun-packed evening of Thrashers hockey.

The Thrashers Fan Club will be there along with a DJ to play the music we’re accustomed to hearing at Philips Arena…and they’ll even be bringing a goal horn as well.

I’ll probably get stuck at the table right next to that.

I was chatting with Sean Grace the other day and he told me that Fan Club members will receive a 15% discount on food and drinks that night as well as be eligible for prizes, (tickets, equipment, signed stuff), that they will have to raffle off. Anyone signing up to become a member of the club will be able to enjoy all benefits that very night!

The Thrashers have armed me with some tickets to upcoming games for a couple of lucky attendees to go home with as well. I’ll also have information available for anyone still interested in getting aboard the Party Bus next Saturday to the game against the Sharks…there are just a few seats left for that gala-extravaganza!

So come join us to watch the Thrashers take on the Sabres in an environment that’s just as rowdy and raucous as if we were there in person!

And I’ve adopted the Coyotes cause they actually have a pretty good team, I think they’ll not fold up like they did after the All-Star break last season. Lombardi,Upshall a very under rated Doan, and Vrbata back seems to point to a pretty good offensive punch and their back line with Jovo and Aucoin leading the way in front of Bryz on defense IMHO has the possibility of postseason there in Phoenix.

I am sure that someplace in the Constitution is guarranteed the rights to Life, Liberty and the ability to watch Hockey. Why so many games (especially early in the season) are not on regular TV is beyond me.

I want to make it Saturday, but my son is coming home and while he would enjoy the food at T.J.’s, he’s just not a hockey fan (at some point, I may have to get his DNA checked). So then, I’ll have to decide between seeing my son or Thrashers. For those that remember the Jack Benny joke, where the robber asked him “your money or your life”, Benny replied, “I’m thinking, I’m thinking”.

For some reason I’ll take the Kings…maybe it’s because of some parallels with the Thrashers (building a core of young players, goaltending issues, young stud D man, haven’t sniffed the playoffs in a few years, etc.).

Maybe it’s just because I coveted Cammalleri the last few years and wanted him here.

Sorry to deviate from the blog for a minute, but Rawhide or others: Do you know when/how/ever if Center Ice games are available in HD. I am frustrated with the fact that games I know are being broadcast in HD are not available on my Comcast Center Ice package. Is this a Comcast thing? Or everywhere. Alternatively, has anyone signed on for the GameCentre package?…same concept, same price but you can see the games on NHL.com and can split screens and use a DVR function. My only concern is the streaming may not be the same quality as the television. Thoughts please!?

I’ve adopted the Blackhawks, if only because I grew up watching their AHL farm team in Springfield, Mass. I loved that big ole’ Indian head on the Springfield Indians jerseys and on the current Hawks as well. Oh yeah, and Kane and Toews are fun to watch. It’s also sadistically fun to watch how long before Huet’s head rolls. He’s as popular now as Rex Grossman was when he was starting QB for the Bears.

Masha – Yes, it is a Comcast issue. they refuse to carry the HD versions of the games and I have been unable to get an answer as to why. It must be financial. I actually cancelled my package last season and went to Direct TV because they do carry both versions.

Colorado too-young team that has to be better than last year’s edition.

Los Angeles, as usual. I was born a Kings fan, reacquainted with hockey as a Red Wings fan, and evolved into a Thrashers fan. Thus all three teams garner my support, but Thrashers are number one no matter how unimportant the game is.

Blackhawks – I adopted them as my second team two years ago for a few reasons. They play an exciting brand of hockey. I cheer for the Cubs in baseball. The city of Chicago has been a fun place to visit for me in the past. And they’re in the Western Conference so they have little effect on the outcome of the Thrashers’ season.

Does anyone know if AT&T U-Verse has 1) the Center Ice Package? 2) Games in HD? It’s not yet available in my neck of the woods yet, but I’m looking forward to it. But no center ice would be a dealbreaker! HD would be a bonus! (I’m stuck with Charter for now…who doesn’t even have Versus in HD anymore!)

Oh, and put me down for the Kings too. Seems similar to the Thrashers in that they’ve been pretty lousy for the most part and no one talks about them doing anything. And Doughty is off to a good start should hopefully keep Bogo motivated!

I don’t believe U-Verse offers Center Ice pkg.. I called to ask, but the guy wouldn’t just tell me “yes”, or “no” they have it, or don’t without asking a bunch of questions, so I hung up. Sounds like a jerk thing to do, but thsi was after being transferred and put on hold three different times for at least five minutes each time. Then for the guy to wait more of my time by having me give him all of my accoutn info just to tell me that they do, or don’t offer Center Ice. BS! I was annoyed. I digress…to answer your question, I’m pretty sure they don’t offer Center Ice…unfortunately.

Every year, I adopt two (2) Western Conference teams. Those two teams change every year. Last year it was Columbus and Chicago. And the year before that, Phoenix and LA. This year, I’m going with the L.A. Kings and the Minnesota Wild.

I’ve been watching the L.A. Kings on late night Center Ice for years, quietly and secretly hoping that they’d one day enter the fray in a major way. It appears, at long last, that this very season may be, at long last, a playoff year. The Kings have a great corps nucleus of young talent. They’re fun to watch. I hope Quick and Bernier, down the road, can be the tandem in net.

Okay, why Minnesota? Well, to my surprise, they fired GM Doug Risebrough and soon thereafter, Jacques LeMaire saw the writing on the wall and resigned. Why did two obvious talents wind up walking out the door, in Minnesota? Accountability. I admire that. Truly. We all know Doug Risebrough is a decent hockey man, and that LeMaire is an exceptional coach. But the bottom line is … they didn’t win with consistency. The Gaborik situation festered. And in the end, they got NOTHING for his departure. But look at them now? They’ve got a very promising new GM in Fletcher. Yes, Cliff Fletcher’s son. He was groomed, essentially from birth, to be an NHL GM one fine day. Well, that day is here now. I applaud Minnesota for taking this bold, new approach. I think they’re on the right path. I wish Risebrough and LeMaire every success in their future endeavors. They will succeed at them. But I also think Fletcher will make all the difference in Minnesota. Just give him time. Give him the money, and get out of his way. Let the GM “manage.” That’s why you pay him. The hockey fans are great and knowledgeable in Minnesota. Go Wild!!

The Kings and the Canucks are the most exciting west coast teams to watch in my opinion. That Sharks-Coyotes game was among the worst I have ever watched. No goals were scored in regulation.

I do not consider Chicago a team “out west.” They are one time zone away. But they are fun too. I also like Columbus, they should gel this year and light the lamp repeatedly.

My problem with Center Ice is you pay good money and the picture quality is terrible. Very few games are in HD. I prefer to watch them on my computer’s 24-inch LCD … the image is MUCH BETTER through NHL.com web site than through Center Ice, and you can talk smack to fans of the other team in chat.

I do admire the Carolina Hurricanes. Except against the Thrash. Watching them in the playoffs last year, I admit it, I was rooting for them. I rooted for the Capitals over the Rangers, too.

Question for Mr. Rawhide: “Do you think the NY Rangers are off to such a red-hot start, including another win tonight over the equally red-hot L.A. Kings, because they’re still p’d off over blowing that 3-1 series lead to the Capitals in the playoffs last year? Or, do you think this is just the Rangers looking back on last season … and they’re just trying to avoid that ‘limp into the playoffs at #7 mode’ again this year?” I’m always reminded that points in October count just as much as the ones in March and April.

I’ll hang up and listen to your comments. (Oops, not a call-in show.)

Brendan

English Teacher: I really liked ‘Walt,’ too. But remember, (sorry for going here this way,) keeping Walt would have cost us our 1st round pick in 2008. And guess who that was? Yeah, Bogosian. 3rd overall. Can’t do it. The Blues knew how to put up “safeguards” to ensure that we didn’t re-sign him. The Blues got our 1st and 3rd round picks in 2007, and our 2nd rounder in 2008, where they selected Center Phil McRae, at #33 overall.

Polskidawg, after starting off the season ‘en fuego,’ the Flames have cooled off pretty fast, highlighted by that 5-0 collapse into a 6-5, OT loss vs. Chicago. Iggy is the face of the franchise. I think the Flames will be a playoff team this year, but they’re going to need consistency. And a healthy and well-performing Kiprussoff.

My preseason Western Conference playoff seeds were (1) San Jose, (2) Chicago, (3) Vancouver, (4) Detroit, (5) St. Louis, (6) Calgary, (7) Columbus, and (8) Los Angeles. Tell me about it. Crazy, I know. But just look what great matchups that would produce! In the #1 vs. #8, it’d be Heatley vs. the Kings. That’s a no-brainer, in terms of who to root for. Tell me you wouldn’t be thrilled to see the Kings take that series in 7!!, sending “Coddled from Cradle to Grave” onto the golf course in the Opening Round. (That’d be rough for the Sharks, as an organization, since they were ousted in the 1st round last year, after a President’s Trophy winning season.) The #2 vs. #7 matchup sees Chicago and Columbus tangle. Love it. Two clubs, defined for nearly a decade by futility, now legitimate playoff teams, fighting to take that next step in their respective franchise histories. In the #3 vs. #6 pairing, it’s Vancouver vs. Calgary. Does it get better than that? Check out the series those two clubs had in 2004. An all-time classic, set to renew, at season’s end. And finally, the #4 vs. #5 matchup is a long-standing playoff rivalry between the Blues and Red Wings. Classic! I think it could go all seven games. The Blues got swept out of the playoffs last year, by Vancouver. They’ll be looking to avoid that this year.

Yeah, it’s fun to speculate. :)

Greetings from South Africa, all! I’m going a little stir-crazy here in Pretoria since I can’t watch any Thrashers games or any ice hockey for that matter. Being starved of any ice hockey, I rely on Bill’s and Chris V.’s excellent postings – thank you guys! I do, however, have access to a lot of football (soccer) and rugby matches, so I’ll have to adopt one or 2 of those teams. Speaking of adoptions, I’ve adopted the Wild. My reasoning is that falling just shy of a play-off berth, they could again be contenders for the playoffs this year, along with the Thrashers, of course! They also have such a great fan base; these fans even made a road trip to Atlanta last year! They were great fun to hang out with at Stats, too. IMO, I think their logo on their jerseys is pretty cool, as well.

Mrs. DWTOO I think you should be able to stream replays of hockey games. Try NHL.com and go to the video section (can’t see it at work, they block streaming video). Or Yahoo.com. Go to the NHL section and there’s a tab for “live games”. I think they have a replay section there.

If Chicago won, they would get the Vasco de Gama soccer team, and if Rio won, the Hawks would move there (despite the fact the nearest rink is 220 miles away in Sao Paulo. With the Hawks being there, and the Leafs being in Moexico city, other “overly traditional” market teams will undoubtedly be moving too…the Buenos Aires Canadiens, Lima Bruins, Santiago Penguins…and to keep the name relevant, the Isles, having had the lighthouse project rejected are moving to Curacao.

Dandylions How could you grow up in Chicago & not be a Blackhawks fan? I grew up in St. Louis when the Blues franchise started and I remember listening (on the radio) about Stan Mikita and Tony Esposito in goal? Later, going to the games, Stl & Chi were huge rivalries and those were always the biggest games to see.

Mrs. DWTOO and World Be Free that was before my time. Sorry couldn’t resist. I don’t remember the Rocket being suspended for a playoff game, but I bet that would have caused a riot.

I cannot pickup Comedy Central at work, so I turn the Toronto newspapers on line for my comedy entertainment. Brian Burke is in the papers today saying “it’s no time to panic” after 6 games.

The Leafs won’t panic until they hear Gary Bettman say- “With the 1st overall pick in the 2010 NHL entry draft, the Boston Bruins select……”

Yup, Rocket was suspended for punching an official in the 55 playoffs.

Wonder if that riot was as damaging to the city as the one Axl Rose set off after playing a short set…just after James Hetfield of Metallic was taken off on a stretcher having been burned badly after a flash pot blew underneath him.

Comcast doesn’t do CenterIce here (ATL region) because the lack of people 10K> who order CenterIce is miniscule when compared to the 100s of thousands of people who order the SEC football pkg, and the NBA league-pass pkg. The bandwidth is dedicated to the most-demanded product-consequently, Comcast Detroit does offer CenterIce in full HD as CenterIce is usually either the #1 or #2 most ordered sports pkg. in that region.

I am fixing to order the NHL GameCenter-I’ll have a review for yall by the end of the month.

Oh I’m adopting the BlueJackets as I like their team make-up and it’s been nice to watch the maturation of Nash. Also Mason is a treat to watch as well.

Just a quick heads-up. Someone had posted a blog or so ago about Dick’s Sporting goods having some Thrashers jerseys on clearance. I needed to stop by there today (the NorthPoint location) for something else, and lo and behold that had about 7 XL and XXL Kovy Reebok replicas ~ $35 after the 75% discount (from the $129 marked price)

I’d like to make a case for the Phoenix Coyotes…after growing up in the northeast and spending 5 wonderful years in the Atlanta area, I have been a die-hard fan since ‘99. Phoenix is now my hometown, and if you have the Center Ice package i’d definitely say they’re worth a look. Even if they don’t last here in the desert beyond this season, they have some great young talent. (Never mind a goalie in Ilya Bryzgalov who has been standing on his head so far this season). Don’t be quick to criticize the lack of fan-base considering all we heard all summer from Balsillie was that he’d move them ASAP. I’ll be taking advantage of Center Ice in a few hours, sitting here in the sun watching the Thrash in NJ. I’ll predict that Kovy keeps pace with that other Russian up in Washington and knocks two past Marty Brodeur tonight. Lets go Thrashers!!

What,…the Thrashers have a game tonight!!! And tomorrow night too!!! Is this feast or famine or what? We best partake to the fullest.

I’ve been thinking about who should be my west coast team for two days now. Even though I like several teams, and some are particularly exciting now,…I gotta stick with the “Flames”. Also like Nashville,..perhaps because they seem to have been facing a stiffer headwind than our boys in Blue have for well,….. as long as I can remember. Proximity may play into this as well.

Hey Stroz,…is there any truth to the rumor that Dolly Parton is looking to steal a page from Disney’s game plan and get a NHL franchise, specifically the Maple Leafs. Rumor has it she plans to move them to Gatlinburg, TN to attract more winter tourists. Renaming the team will be a write-in contest. Any suggestions?

Great article on Russian hockey by Elliot. Thanks for the link. I almost bought a CCCP jersey at the 87 world juniors but thought $50 was way too high. What I wouldn’t give for one of those jerseys today. (BTW: The CCCP starting line at those games was Pavel Bure centering Federov and Mogilny.)

Also, a good article on the Synder’s and Thrashers. I’m glad the Thrashers have kept that link alive/strong. I wouldn’t mind a silent minute before a game each year in Dan’s memory. Would it be too over the top to do it on Oct 24th?

1/2 hour until Thrashers hockey.

CONGRATULATIONS THRASHERS! It is so sweet to be 3-1. Pavs allowed two goals on hostile ice in New Jersey. Clinching shorthanded tally scored on willpower alone. Thrashers simply were not going to be denied! Glad to see that inner fire. Been missing for last several seasons. Memo to Sori Letemin: Take all the time you need to rest up from whatever phantom injury you claim. End of season preferably. Your services are no longer required! Even the staunchest KL apologists have to admit the Finn sieve would have allowed a minimum of three goals but more likely four or more. Am I not correct? Be honest people! Oh well. Too happy to gripe tonight. Getting set to watch replay! Good night all. Peace. ++STENDEC++

Shaky start but sound defensive positioning saved our butts in period # 1. Special teams were very, very special indeed — PK was a perfect 6 for 6 and never allowed NJ to get comfy in our zone on the PP. Now if we only played the body at ES like we do when down a man, then this team might be for real. We have got to have the best shooting percentage in the league with a total of 16 goals on roughly 100 shots.

Check it out. http://www.nhl.com/ice/boxscore.htm?id=2009020087. That’s tonight’s boxscore. Coupla things stand out. Only 30 shots against, this time around. Twenty-eight saves for Pavelec. Special teams was the difference, of course. Two PPG’s by the Pevs Dispenser and a “shorty” by Thorburn. Loved the reaction to goal by Reasoner, Thorburn, and Kovy’s big smile, from the bench. Priceless.

Okay, some other things stand out. What about the D? Kubina gets his 4th helper of the season, as did Enstrom. Popovic was a +1, and played 14:50. Salmela played 13:02. Bogo was a -1, but played 18:48. Kubina played 22:31, and Enstrom logged 23:33. Hainsey had a decent game, too.

What about our Russians? Max and Antro were a -1. Kovy was a -2. Kozlov was even, with 15:58 in ice time.

Kane had the game-tying goal tonight, with a sniper shot to the upper corner of the net, against Brodeur. Pevs’ tallies were his 3rd and 4th on the season, just trailing Kovalchuk by one now. Reasoner picked up another assist. Thorburn had critical insurance goal. The GWG went to Peverley, of course, on the PP. Kane played 13:40. Pevs played 15:56.

And finally, Boulton added to his penalty minutes with a fight. How did New Jersey get Andrew Peters from Buffalo? Was he a free agent signing? Anywho, Boulton only played 5:03 this time around. I continue to like our 4th line this season. Especially Thorburn and Boulton.

Hope I didn’t just get Ranalloed.

Good contributions from just about every line. 2nd line seemed to have really good jump in the 2nd but they are still getting dominated by the other team’s top line. Their shot differential at ES was -5 again and they can’t seem to sustain any pressure. That’s fine when you’re talking about the top line as they are so good in transition, but we can’t keep winning with two lines giving up so many shots. The top two lines ES shot diff was around -11 or -12. UNGOOD!! Overall though the defensive positioning and presence near our own net are the two biggest differences between this year and last. Still need to tighten things up in our transition game: still too many sloppy changes and failures to match up after line changes.

I guess Friday night is not a good night to talk hockey on a blog! LOL
