Who’s Next To Be Voted Off Thrashers Island?

Nine players were voted off Thrashers Island on Saturday…four forwards, four defenders and one goalkeeper. Left in the wake of their departure are fifteen forwards, eight blueliners and three goalies, (four if you count Kari who is injured). Given that NHL teams must get their rosters down to 23 players by 3 pm Wednesday, this means that there are four players left remaining that will need to depart sometime by then.

Among the “safe” players are forwards Ilya Kovalchuk, Bryan Little, Nik Antropov, Todd White, Slava Kozlov, Rich Peverley, Marty Reasoner, Colby Armstrong, Jim Slater and probably Eric Boulton. I’ll add Maxim Afinogenov to that assuming he’s signed.

On the blueline, the top four are “safe” are Tobias Enstrom, Zach Bogosian, Pavel Kubina and Ron Hainsey. In goal only Johan Hedberg is to be given the “safe” classification in my book.

Kari Lehtonen is on the roster, but he’s not considered healthy enough to be in the lineup on October 3. The team has a decision to make with him considering simply waiting for him to heal or placing him on the injured list. Given that, I would then reduce the number of players who will need to be trimmed off the roster to three.

That leaves forwards Chris Thorburn, Josh Gratton, Dan Fritsche and Evander Kane…defenders Nathan Oystrick, Mark Popovic, Boris Valabik and Anssi Salmela…as well as goalies Ondrej Pavelec and Manny Legace left to battle it out for the handful of slots that are left to be filled.

Coach Anderson has said he wants the lineup for today’s preseason finale to be a lot like what opening night’s will be…to that measure, here are the expected lines for this afternoon’s game against Tampa Bay.

And with that…I’ll ask for your projections for whom you believe will be the 23 left remaining to suit up Saturday for the season opener and who will also be included to watch the festivities from the press box. Obviously, a lot of this will be settled on the ice later today in the final preseason game, but I’d like to get your predictions beforehand.

Of course, I wouldn’t ask to see yours if I wasn’t willing to show you mine, so here are my projected lineups for opening night…

Now, you’ll notice that I’ve put Opie at the top of the depth chart as I think he will indeed start against the Lightning and I feel the team will keep Legace, going with three keepers. One of the reasons I think Don Waddell and the organization will choose this route is because they do not want to see a repeat of 2005. As you’ll recall, that fall they were unable to properly address the problem of their goalies dropping faster and more frequently than stocks last fall.

Another reason I think they might keep Manny around is because if they sign him to a two-way deal and ship him off to Chicago, D-Mac will be deprived of some much-needed playing time. If the start him in Atlanta with Moose backing up…or the other way around… then Opie is once again thrown to the Wolves. Of course another option is for the Thrashers to simply say, “Thanks for your time, Manny…but we’re just gonna have to go our separate ways”. But I just don’t think the brain trust of Waddell, Dudley and Anderson care to see a keeper of Legace’s ability slip away given Kari’s questionable status.

So, I think they carry the three goalies… then sort things out once Kari is deemed fit to play.

Which of these players will be voted off Thrashers Island? (Pick Three)

  • Anssi Salmela (26%, 38 Votes)
  • Boris Valabik (49%, 72 Votes)
  • Mark Popovic (11%, 17 Votes)
  • Nathan Oystrick (20%, 29 Votes)
  • Josh Gratton (23%, 34 Votes)
  • Chris Thorburn (19%, 28 Votes)
  • Dan Fritsche (47%, 69 Votes)
  • Evander Kane (64%, 94 Votes)
  • Eric Boulton (7%, 10 Votes)
  • Manny Legace (11%, 17 Votes)
  • Ondrej Pavelec (15%, 22 Votes)

Total Voters: 148

Evander Kane? Well, I think the Thrashers will determine that it is in his and their best interest to ship him off to Vancouver. Given that Max will be getting more ice time in the regular season…again assuming he is signed…there’s no real need to rush the kid or expose him to injury when there just is no real need to do so.

I also am projecting that Anssi Salmela comes in fourth in the battle for the bottom-three spots on the blueline, if for no other reason than the other three have significantly more NHL experience. Popovic has really shown me a lot since he was invited to camp. Valabik…not so much. If this is a true contest to see the best player win out, then Pops wins out over Boris.

I almost went with Peverly on the second line with White and Afinogenov. As I listened to the streaming online feed via the Hurricanes’ radio broadcast, there seemed to be some chemistry with that line. But that Peever- Party-Army line looks pretty good.

Since Joey Crabb was sent down with eight others on Saturday, the battle to unseat Chris Thorburn is now down to Josh Gratton and Dan Fritsche. I’ll go with Gratton here because I like the way Josh drops the gloves and his tough play on the ice. However, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Fritsche gets the nod, escpecially if Anderson is of the impression that he can provide help on the PK.

I also wouldn’t be stunned if Thorney finds himself snacking from the press box buffet Saturday night while Gratton or Fritsche play instead. However, starting the season off with a measure of consistency from last spring will probably be deemed what is prudent at this juncture. Besides it’s not like a change couldn’t be made later on if Anderson feels the need to do so.

So…all that means that I believe Salmela, Fritsche and Kane will be voted off Thrashers Island this week. Three pretty darn good players who any other season would probably find themselves on this roster. That’s a testament to the type of depth we have this season…which is a very, very good thing.

If I were Coach Anderson, I would definately be mixing up player combinations in pre-season. It’s the only way, in a short space of time, to realistically assess what you have. Baseball has spring training and it lasts forever. Hockey, not so much!
So JA plays “yahtzee” and looks for five 5’s. I also feel that we will pick up some one in a roster/cap space dump that we’ve had our eyes on.’
I’m quite excited this year, over those in the past. We now have size and speed and skill. Toby won’t be squashed as much, without retaliation, and we will keep the puck in the other end longer, which will spare our D. Army was missing as was Hainsey. Two key people in our system!
Last note on goaltending; when Kari gets healthy, which is soon, he will play better than anyone we presently have signed. So if we sign Manny , who would be an excellent back up, and keep Moose, we can send Pavs back down for more experience and training. I know Kari gets hurt.BUT, with a better ‘D’ than last year, combined with a more potent and physical ‘O’, we put the pressure on the other guys and save ourselves a wee bit.
Brendan – my eyes hurt looking at that spreadsheet..nnnoooooooooooooo, don’t make me!

Adam, I’m not even going to scream if the Thrashers don’t make the playoffs. I’ll scream if they move backwards. I might scream if they finish with 76-points, for the 3rd straight year. Almost by definition, a team housed within the lottery draft and able to claim players off of waivers from an advantageous position, is bound to improve. If only, “incrementally.” It still should improve.

For me, my attention will be focused on Bryan Little and Zach Bogosian this year, as well as Kari Lehtonen. If these three players have career-best type seasons, things should really start to look better. I also look towards Slava Kozlov, a player in his contract year, to shine this season. Additionally, I think Toby Enstrom needs to step up his game this year, to be on the top pairing. Kubina, to me, is a straight “rental trade.” I don’t foresee him sticking around past this season. And if he is dealt at the trade deadline, perhaps we can fetch something nice for him. I was suprised that Matthieu Schneider “netted” the organization a 2nd round draft pick. In that regard, I must praise Waddell for a job well done. Detractors will claim Waddell could have and should have done better than that. I’m at a loss as to why any team would offer Atlanta a 1st round pick for a then 39-year old defenseman as a “rental.” There was no way Atlanta was getting a body off of Montreal’s roster, as they drove for the playoffs.

Viking, has Mats Sundin signed anywhere yet? Or are his plans to join a team after Christmas? Or, will Mats retire??

Last night’s game should be used as a motivator for October 3. One game doesn’t make a sseason, especially in the preseason. But the game did show that some players belong on the team and others do not.

Goaltending-4 out of 5 goals scored last night were scored from within 10 feet of the net. Any goaltender would have had a problem last night. Let’s give the goaltenders some help in the defensive zone, forwards included.

Max-everyone is on the Max bandwagon-everyone but me. Let’s talk in December. Lindy held Max accountable and so will John Anderson.

Mats is unsigned; not sure if Vancouver even wants him back.

I’d bet Vancouver would take Mats back, for the right price. Or a prorated price, after Christmas. As would Toronto, if the opportunity presented itself. But I don’t see the Leafs as a playoff contender this year, even with Phil Kessel.

I screwed Hokie over in our fantasy Hockey draft. I got Kovy, Antro, and little (probably early on all three) but hey! I get to have even more fun watching the Thrash this year. Hokie did get “I love it when you call me BIG” Slava, as well as Bogo. So he still has some ATL connection.

I agree that draft picks dont always pan out. I mean it is a draft and all the draft means is potential. Does not make it easier to see a first round pick flounder. I mean if i really wanted to complain about a Thrashers firt round pick there are others I would bring up. ie. Patrick Stefan….

Actually, Sherman got Slava… I only got Bogo… I thought for sure I was going to get Antropov in the last two rounds. But, I forgot I was drafting against Thrashers fans. I should have known better.

Buzz… my theory was to play Ollie Jokinen at Center until they updated Antropov’s position status to include C, RW… then I was going to swap them out.

Now I’m stuck with Big Crybaby at Center… gotta feeling I’ll be swapping him out for Briere or McDonald.

I would vote Valabik, Fritsche and Kane off the island. I would have loved to have seen Evander force his way onto the roster but he has not done so. He’ll be great in a year or so. To play him intentionally for only 7 or 8 games is crazy, why risk him to injury simply to give him a taste of the NHL? Send him down or keep him up.

I wouldn’t read too much into the loss yesterday. It’s preseason and it only serves to allow the coaches to evaluate and make decisions. everyone was off.

As for spelling and grammer, maybe the AJC could start a Grammer Nazi blog for those who get their panties in a wad over a misspelled word on a hockey blog.

So, Manny Malhotra turns down 4 years $8 million from Atlanta to play 1 year $770,000 with San Jose?

Brendan – Vancouver has already gone on record they will not do the half-season signing again. For Mats to sign with the ‘Nucks, it’s now or never….unless its January and they are on the outside looking in, of course!

Sisu – look at the photo of Ondrej in the Hockey News piece. It shows the very weakness I’ve been hammering on about him. Chest down, shoulders forward, weight on his toes – just sitting there waiting to get beaten.

Brendan, I can not come up with more than rumors saying Sundin has been negotiating with Vancouver, which would have to make room salary wise for it to happen.

Mostly I just found articles about his marriage a month ago.

Following the link to the Dispatch website, Portzline (remember him?) had that “news” under the “rumors” section. If even Columbus’ beat writer is going to refer to it as a rumor, I find it senseless to cite it as fact.

No sense in getting the denizens of this blog worked up over a rumor about a nobody, when the debacle last night is something that actually happened.
