This past weekend I, along with a handful of other Atlanta Thrashers bloggers, received an e-mail from Puck Daddy’s Greg Wyshynski requesting a quote…one or two lines… that he could use in an upcoming story he’s doing. He was looking for a couple comments regarding what we’d be looking for from the Thrashers this coming season.
Here is my reply to his inquiry:
“I look for the Thrasher to avoid the type of slow start that plagued them the past two seasons. With so many returning cast members from the team that played so well last spring, I think they’ll avoid the “getting to know you” phase this fall”.
Now, as I said, Greg asked for just one or two lines only from us to help with his piece…but I thought I’d expound on my comment here.

Peverley, Kovalchuk and White will reunite to try and build upon last spring's success, (AP photo/Gregory Smith)
As you’ll recall, the Thrashers finished off last season on a rather high note. They played to a winning record in the second half of the season and made life hard on a couple of teams that were in the thick of playoff battles down the stretch. During that time, residents of Thrasherville were treated to some of the best hockey they’ve seen in many, many moons.
What makes all that even more exciting, in my viewpoint, is that there are so many of that squad that will be returning once the team reassembles for training camp, preseason and, in just 33 more days, the drop of the puck on yet another NHL season. For the Thrashers, it will be their tenth such campaign.
Given the current roster, here is what I have oft opined as my possible opening-day lineup:
Kovy – Peverley – Antropov
Kozlov – White – Little
Kane/Stewart/Crabb – Reasoner – Armstrong
Boulton – Slater – Thorburn
Hainsey – Kubina
Enstrom – Bogosian
Valabik – Oystrick/Salmela
Lehtonen
Hedberg
Of those 23 players listed that could make up the possible 20-man lineup on October 3, nineteen of them were with Atlanta last spring…seventeen were with the team on opening night. Peverley arrived in January, Salmela at the trade deadline, Kane drafted in June while Antropov, Kubina and Stewart were acquired since July 1.
Thus, I just don’t think it is too far of a stretch to believe that last spring’s play can…and will…translate to a better start of a season than what we’ve witness in these parts over the past two years. Such familiarity among the players can only be helpful in bringing about a certain measure of success.
This time last year there were still some big question marks hanging over the heads of some of the new-comers to the team. Armstrong and Christensen, brought over from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline in March of the previous season, were beginning their first full season with the squad.
Armstrong worked out just fine…Christensen, not so much.
Centerman Marty Reasoner was a big success…Jason Williams was reluctant to buy into John Anderson’s style of play, was a major disappointment and, come January, was gone.
Rookie Zach Bogosian lived up to his billing as the third overall draft pick in the summer of 2008…Mathieu Schneider, acquired via trade from Anaheim, just didn’t work out.
The more question marks there are going into a season…the greater the likelihood that they’ll be problems. Right now, the biggest questions that I see regarding the players is…1). How successful will the addition of Antropov to Kovy’s line be?…2). Can Kubina help turn the Thrashers Swiss cheese defense into something a little more respectable?…3). Will Evander Kane play his way into the lineup…not just for a couple games but I mean for the duration of the season?
Those issues are a far cry better than the ones that hung over the team a year ago.
Also, Thrashers players will begin play in what will be coach Anderson’s second year behind Atlanta’s bench. These guys understand what their roles in his system and, most importantly, buy into it and seem to very comfortable with the parts they play in it. There won’t be a learning curve during October and November.
To that point, Todd White recently stated in an interview with Chris Vivlamore, “The biggest problem at the beginning of last year is I didn’t think we had 20 guys that wanted to [commit to the system]. On any given night we had guys reverting back to the way the team used to play, as opposed to the end of the year, when we were all committed to doing what we were supposed to do. The best teams play a system and stick to it. All five guys on the ice are committed to it. That’s how you have success in this league.”
So, there will be a fair amount of familiarity in the Thrashers’ lineup and behind the bench. Familiarity that should…knocking wood… help to breed success.

It is poor journalism but look at what that leaves us with. At best is status quo where the team budget stays at the bottom of the league at worst the team goes to Hamilton. How is that supposed to get me excited about the coming season. Either Kovy is gone or the whole team is gone.

Now, this part I don’t understand… read Spec’s Notes: under the Zherdev section… why only $1.5 million?

GVH, I think rumors of his signing with a KHL team were debunked shortly after he was made a UFA by the Rangers’ brass. But I could be thinking of some other overpriced Russian.
Looking at Zherdev’s game log from last year: he started off wicked hot with 5 G, 9 A and a +11 in the first 16 games. However, he disappeared in December and then played decent / mediocre hockey down the stretch (after Torts came aboard perhaps?) potting only 7 G, netting 6 A with a + 4 in the last 20 games. However, he completely disappeared in the playoffs in the series against Washington (0 G, 0 A,-3). I’m not sold.

Hokie… remember what happened with Kiwi? If Zherdev had a deal in Russia, he would be there. That ship has sailed, however.
Unless you’re speaking of something else…?

Brenden, please put me down as the Thrashers finishing with 86 points, 4th in the SE, and 13th in the conference. I want to go higher but sort of got my ears pinned back with an 88 point guess last year. I will be pleased to have “misunderestimated” the Boys in Blue for this coming season.
How many points in the standings, if any, do you folks Zerdhev would add?
While you are at it Brenden,….I’m thinking the opening day cap hit will be $47.3 M.
Over 200 blog posts on Sept 1st,…….who says the Thrashers don’t have good fans, or Atlanta doesn’t follow hockey?

hookybob-that’s it, it’s because they don’t have bad fans. ppl (people) just judge them by the way the players play. personally, i think the teams that stink and hav really good fans, r the most loyal.
bout zherdev, HECK YA!!!! but the problem is, is even though we hav like 14.5 million dollars on our cap space, we just couldn’t afford kovy to a deal (he’s pricy, but worth it) and zherdev (he’s pricy too). that would pretty much fill up al our space, u at least want to keep bout 5 mil on ur cap.

LAC & HookyBob your votes are registered. Last year, LAC won the “Guess the Thrashers Opening Night Budget.” There’s now allll kiiiiinds of craziness that might happen to that 2009-10 budget, with talks of Legace, Zherdev, and maybe even some other as yet unnamed player.
Simply put, the choice is THEIRS. The Atlanta Spirit own the team. They can opt for $44.5 million … and maybe add payroll at the deadline, if things go well. Or they can pick up Zherdev, if Kovy wants him, plus another goalie, and another forward, and still have plenty of cap space for trade deadline moves.
What? Well, is that true, or isn’t it? We’re being told by a Maryland judge that everything “is as it was” back in August 2005. Well, if that’s true, that year the Spirit “greenlighted” a maxed cap for opening night. If Belkin ponies up his share, and forgoes an appeal, then theoretically, this team is SUPPOSED to be able to compete within the economic framework of the salary cap, once the revenue-sharing dollars kick in. And let’s face it, wins puts fannies in seats. It would be in their best interest to field a winning team, for many reasons.
And iffff there’s this GREAT TRUST in GM Waddell, by ownership, then they should give him the money, then GET OUT OF HIS WAY so he can manage the team. And if Waddell doesn’t get the desired results, they can fire him. Or just not renew him. Forbes Magazine said Waddell is only under contract through 2010. I don’t personally believe that to be true. I think Waddell’s contract has a clause in it that says, “If Mr. Waddell still has a neck and a heartbeat, and can perform most bodily functions, an AUTOMATIC renewal of one-year kicks in.” What kind of owners write and agree to ridiculous clauses like that? Uhh, cheerfully withdrawn, gazing at my 2009 calendar, wondering how long it could possibly take to fight a clause like, “Or Mr. Belkin can buy the other owners out AT COST.” Or successfully buy out an estranged investor. Apparently, it takes a mininum of 4 years and one month. D’oh!!!! I think the Atlanta Spirit should be legally barred from writing in any special or UNUSUAL clauses, into ANY contract, EVER AGAIN. I hope Commissioner Bettman is keeping a watchful eye on the situation. For what it’s worth, I actually believe that Gary Bettman WANTS hockey in Atlanta, and would FIGHT to keep it here, if any unbelievably ridiculous attempt to relocate this franchise arose. Which it won’t.

Did anyone else watch the NHL Network’s presentation of “Classic Series: 2003 Conference Quarter Finals, NY Islanders vs. Ottawa Senators?” In it, Todd White scored the double OT winner in Game Three, that tipped the series irreversably in favor of the Senators. And in Game Five, who had the game winning goal (GWG) that clinched the series? C’mon, guess! Yes, it was also Todd White. And in those days, Hossa seemed very pleased with him.
Rubbin’ my chin, just out of curiosity, I need some Red Wing fans and Penguins fans to chime in on this one. Here, now, the question. “Did the hometown fans ever chant, ‘Hos-sa, Hos-sa’ in their barn?” Or, was that just an Atlanta phenomenon? I wonder if the Hos-sa, Hos-sa chant will catch fire in Chicago? Time will tell.

Looks like T Pyatt is now off the market according to Kuklas Korner tweet citing the Az Rep I think. Rumor is the deal is valued right around 1 mill. He is now a Cayote. I’m afraid Malhotra will be next and prolly go to a team like Fla or Minn.

Zherdev? Zherdev?? Zherdev???
Great; another winger…I don’t need to tell you folks our problem is KEEPING THE OTHER TEAM FROM SCORING!!!
We were down at the bottom of shots allowed/game, an average of 5 shots/game worse than DEE-troit, and outshot an average of 4.6/game.
Are we gonna have to win games 6-5? Not only will it take a toll on the players every night, think what it will do to the voice of My Favorite Kamalian…

Brendan-I saw White’s goal on NHL Network as well. I remember him with Ottawa against the Sabres.
Nothing lost by losing out on signing Taylor Pyatt. He would have been a waste of a roster spot. Big guy who plays like a little girl (no offense to our female bloggers).

“From spectorhockey.net (and twitter)…Craig Custance of The Sporting News claims there’s nothing close on a deal between the Atlanta Thrashers and Nikolai Zherdev.”
