This past weekend I, along with a handful of other Atlanta Thrashers bloggers, received an e-mail from Puck Daddy’s Greg Wyshynski requesting a quote…one or two lines… that he could use in an upcoming story he’s doing. He was looking for a couple comments regarding what we’d be looking for from the Thrashers this coming season.
Here is my reply to his inquiry:
“I look for the Thrasher to avoid the type of slow start that plagued them the past two seasons. With so many returning cast members from the team that played so well last spring, I think they’ll avoid the “getting to know you” phase this fall”.
Now, as I said, Greg asked for just one or two lines only from us to help with his piece…but I thought I’d expound on my comment here.

Peverley, Kovalchuk and White will reunite to try and build upon last spring's success, (AP photo/Gregory Smith)
As you’ll recall, the Thrashers finished off last season on a rather high note. They played to a winning record in the second half of the season and made life hard on a couple of teams that were in the thick of playoff battles down the stretch. During that time, residents of Thrasherville were treated to some of the best hockey they’ve seen in many, many moons.
What makes all that even more exciting, in my viewpoint, is that there are so many of that squad that will be returning once the team reassembles for training camp, preseason and, in just 33 more days, the drop of the puck on yet another NHL season. For the Thrashers, it will be their tenth such campaign.
Given the current roster, here is what I have oft opined as my possible opening-day lineup:
Kovy – Peverley – Antropov
Kozlov – White – Little
Kane/Stewart/Crabb – Reasoner – Armstrong
Boulton – Slater – Thorburn
Hainsey – Kubina
Enstrom – Bogosian
Valabik – Oystrick/Salmela
Lehtonen
Hedberg
Of those 23 players listed that could make up the possible 20-man lineup on October 3, nineteen of them were with Atlanta last spring…seventeen were with the team on opening night. Peverley arrived in January, Salmela at the trade deadline, Kane drafted in June while Antropov, Kubina and Stewart were acquired since July 1.
Thus, I just don’t think it is too far of a stretch to believe that last spring’s play can…and will…translate to a better start of a season than what we’ve witness in these parts over the past two years. Such familiarity among the players can only be helpful in bringing about a certain measure of success.
This time last year there were still some big question marks hanging over the heads of some of the new-comers to the team. Armstrong and Christensen, brought over from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline in March of the previous season, were beginning their first full season with the squad.
Armstrong worked out just fine…Christensen, not so much.
Centerman Marty Reasoner was a big success…Jason Williams was reluctant to buy into John Anderson’s style of play, was a major disappointment and, come January, was gone.
Rookie Zach Bogosian lived up to his billing as the third overall draft pick in the summer of 2008…Mathieu Schneider, acquired via trade from Anaheim, just didn’t work out.
The more question marks there are going into a season…the greater the likelihood that they’ll be problems. Right now, the biggest questions that I see regarding the players is…1). How successful will the addition of Antropov to Kovy’s line be?…2). Can Kubina help turn the Thrashers Swiss cheese defense into something a little more respectable?…3). Will Evander Kane play his way into the lineup…not just for a couple games but I mean for the duration of the season?
Those issues are a far cry better than the ones that hung over the team a year ago.
Also, Thrashers players will begin play in what will be coach Anderson’s second year behind Atlanta’s bench. These guys understand what their roles in his system and, most importantly, buy into it and seem to very comfortable with the parts they play in it. There won’t be a learning curve during October and November.
To that point, Todd White recently stated in an interview with Chris Vivlamore, “The biggest problem at the beginning of last year is I didn’t think we had 20 guys that wanted to [commit to the system]. On any given night we had guys reverting back to the way the team used to play, as opposed to the end of the year, when we were all committed to doing what we were supposed to do. The best teams play a system and stick to it. All five guys on the ice are committed to it. That’s how you have success in this league.”
So, there will be a fair amount of familiarity in the Thrashers’ lineup and behind the bench. Familiarity that should…knocking wood… help to breed success.

Actually, the most interesting part of the Sovsport interview with Kovy is when he is asked about Thrashers ownership problem. According to this journalist, Kovy said, “I can’t describe details, since I’m not clear on all nuances. But we have a new owner from Washington (?) and, with this new momentum, Atlanta signed Antropov and Kubina.” Who is this “new owner” that he is talking about?

Clearly, the Buffalo Butthurt is strong in this blog, starting with the blogs very own (and recently addition, I must say) attention whore. Of course, that last part is always a given. At least since June, anyway.
New blog post, same ol’ garbage. One has to wonder if he has a job, or if he’s just paid to blog all day, get the posters here riled up, then go to sleep and dream about what he’s going to post on the blog the next day.
Bring on October.
Brendan – 91pts, 3rd SE, 8th East. For your contest. Book it!
Rawhide – Love the write-up. Especially love the picture of det kaptein celebrating in front of the Buffalo bench. Watching him streak down-ice that night will be an image that is forever etched into my memory. Right there with the spectacular OT win vs. Toronto in January as well. That team really came together last year, and if they want to quell the naysayers, they need to get a real good jump at the beginning..

Damn you though because you stole my prediction for the Thrashers including position in division and Conf! “EOB – You seem somewhat contorted about being a Thrashers fan. Are you happy that the team played well during the final stretch or not?””
ZING! R. Stroz, you are absolutely correct. Because anyone who has read my posts knows that I have no love for the Thrashers. Clearly someone like me who will go to lengths to show that Jim Slater is a good 4th line center by showing that his career has been better than 90% of the people drafted after him and is equally as good as people drafted at the end of the 1st or beginning of the 2nd round in other years MUST NOT BE a Thrashers fan.
“Having said that, I’m still elated anytime we beat the Sabres at the Bulb and shut up the thousands of fans from Buffalo…it’s nice not having to hear a chorus of “let’s go Buffalo” chants echoing in the arena concourse bowels as I leave.”
So basically Smoothie it has nothing to do with the fact we beat a bad team, you just have a complex because their fans are so supportive?
“Understand that I am viewing this through the eyes of a Thrashers fan.”
Bill Tiller, I too am looking at this through the eyes of a Thrashers fan. When 4 out of 5 non-playoff teams in the East play just as well or better against Buffalo as we did (the exception being Toronto which Buffalo gets worked up for those rivalry games far easier), I DO NOT take pride in the fact that we beat them as you so happily do. I want to do better than beating a bad team that so many non-playoff teams also beat.
Let’s set our standards higher or stop complaining about Todd White by calling him Charmin. Make your choice.

I could not translate whole Kovy interview. It is not easy. I could give you short resume of interview.
1. Kovy wife is pregnant again. They are very happy and wait baby around Olympic Games in Vancouver (February)
2. He is working out with Zherdev and he did not know if Nik will put signature with Atlanta.
3. Kovy is absolutely sure, that Dany Heatly did not come here.
4. Kovy will come back to Atlanta at September 8.
5. He bought Condo in Miami, FL.
6. He did not meet Don Waddle and did not talk with him about Contract.
7. Kovy wants to win Cup with Atlanta. He said that.
8. Also he said that he hopes to sing contract after one year to any teams. Atlanta is number one.
This is pure much what he said. Also he was talking about other athletes, but it is not important for Atlanta Thrashers.

Pretty soon, you’ll be making your point by saying Thrashers fans are the worst in the league because you can’t find Thrasher’s jerseys in local department stores.

This is a great blog for all hockey fans, those of the Thrahsers and any other team that wishes to participate. That’s what’s made this a great place to talk hockey all summer. Remember that most of us are regulars here, talking hockey, agreeing and disagreeing, primarily the Thrashers.

World Be Free, I have never resorted to the name calling before, but this seems to be the environment around here. Tiller’s last blog was about a poor performing Todd White and how people called him charmin. He doesn’t seem to have a problem with people having no respect for their fellow bloggers.
I have provided some very factual posts that are very supportive about the Atlanta Thrashers. How do I get treated in return? I’m told I’m not a Thrasher fan and that I don’t have a job and that I am a post whore.
So since that is the environment that Tiller wants, let’s give it to him. Let’s call out him and all the other @ss-hols and just turn this into a blogging hell. EOB – I do have to say that yes…yes I did/do take a bit of pride as the Thrashers beat the Sabres & helped in keeping them out of the post-season. They were doing what they were supposed to be doing…playing hard regardless of the respective record. But really, it’s no different then when they popped Washington 5-1 last spring…or beating the Ducks last february…or the Rangers or Florida in April, (again, assisting the Panthers in an early tee-time as well).
If nothing else, it helped these players gain the confidence in themselves that I hope they will carry with them into the upcoming season. That’s what I enjoyed most about seeing them play well in those teams.
I want them to win everytime out…or at least play hard. And when they did so last spring I liked it. This is even more true when the two-points taken helped make life a little tougher on the team they beat…whether that was Buffalo, Florida or whomever.

EOB – I caught the sarcasm. We know you like both teams. Not really that unusual, I still am a die-hard Flames fan. I am torn when Calgary rolls into Phillips when the NHL graces us about once every 5 years to let our former team come and play our current one. You are, however, being a bit of both a hypocrite and a blog hog. You (under former names) have really been pretty brutal to people when you disagree with them. Call this a bit of bad karma catching up with you. And why do you feel the need to respond to every single post someone makes? You don’t have to defend your position over and over. It’s obvious you love the game and have a pretty good knowledge of it. But we have the right to disagree…such is the beauty of what is going on here. Come to the games we watch at TJ’s and meet us in person. You’ll find we are just a bunch of hockey fans, just like you are.
On a completely different topic, its being reported the Ice Holdings Group, one of the bidders for the Coyotes has booked 5 days at the arena is Saskatoon for some regular season games. It’s also being reported that the lease buy out to leave their arena is $700M. Too bad leases are waaaaaaay down the list of creditors when in banruptcy court. Should be a busy day there tomorrow as the judge makes his ruling on who can be in the bidding.
NHLPA also made a major mistake firing their leader Paul Kelly. The CBA could get really ugly after the 11-12 season. If they cancel another season, hockey might not ever completely recover.

It was two seasons ago that I referred to Todd White as Charmin. Were you around this blog two years ago, because I sure don’t remember the Earl of Bud on Rawhide’s blog two years ago.
For some reason, I thought we were discussing the success of the Thrashers during the second half of the season against several teams attempting to make the playoffs, including, but not limited to, Buffalo, Florida, and Edmonton. For some reason, you are fixated on Buffalo.

R. Stroz, you just called Todd White Charmin the other day which is what I was referring to. It was the last blog on Aug 29th, 2009 at 7:10pm.
I did not fixate on Buffalo as you claim. First, Bill Tiller fixated on Buffalo by including a photo of them and mentioning that we beat them 4 times, but mentioned no other team. Then, you fixated on Buffalo without mentioning any other team at 12:53am on this blog. So when both you and Bill Tiller fixated on Buffalo that seems to be what made the debate break out.

Damn, ya’ll. Chill out.
Also, call me sensitive, but I get really annoyed by insults implying that someone is gay or female. That’s bullshit — we’re all supporters of the team.
As to whether familiarity breeds success…yes, probably. Except I have my concerns. Specifically, while we’ve fixed a lot of things, we still have reasonably good goalies who may or may not be able to play a solid season and we still have what looks like a weak PK. Also, though I think defense will be better this year, I’m still not sure it will be good enough. And lest we forget, goal really didn’t hurt us last year, but the PK and our D are the reason we didn’t make the postseason.

Bill chose Buffalo because we went 4-0 against them. If it had been against the Blues, or Rangers or whomever we swept, thats who would have been the center of this conversation. I am sure the Flyer fans point to their domination of the Thrashers as a catalyst for a higher playoff seed.
As to confronting your opinion, EOB – you fight everyone on every topic. Sometimes ya just gotta accept the fact people disagree with you and let it go – move on. I don’t understand your need to reply to every single post on every single topic. Obviosly you DO care if someone disagrees with you, and people tend to get annoyed when others try to always be the center of attention and always put in their two cents worth. Be a part of the discussion – not the center of it.

So, getting back to the blog at hand…
In my opinion (and its just that – an opinion), the team and its success boils down to this – goalie play and/or health. The moves made this summer seem to be positive ones, and I believe that they have the chance of icing the best D in Thrash history, but as the roster looks now I would say that its a 84-90 point team WITH consistently above-average goaltending.
With traditional Thrasher goaltending, and with traditional goalie health – 74-80 points.
The offense should be top 10, and team D middle-of-the-pack, so it (as always in the NHL) comes down to:
Either Kari has to be motivated and healthy, or Pavelec takes the bull by the horns and never lets go. Or not.
The only things I know about Buffalo are that its really cold and the city name always reminds me of the great 70’s song by the Motor City Madman – The Great White Buffalo.

“But we have a new owner from Washington (?)”…that is interesting, Midfield.
Perhaps it’s some garbled translation reference to Belkin’s ownership status reverting to it’s original status in a case that was decided by a judge in a Maryland court, which isn’t in DC but it’s close. ….Yeah, that looks like a stretch to me, too.

If Coach approaches the road trip the right way and has the guys prepared, it can be a great bonding tool for the entire team. Road trips often are. And having them bonding right at the start could do wonders for not only the trip, but also the entire season.

Alan, I hope to heck your prediction comes to fruition. I wasn’t sure about the number of OTL and was thinking more like 5 or 6 since we seem to be so good in the extra stanza / shootout. How about this? I’ll go with 41 – 34 – 7 for only 89 points. But I still think that will give them an outside shot at the 8 spot in the Eastern Conf and obviously third in the division behind WSH & CAR. If three teams from the SE make it, then there will be much mediocrity from # 7 thru # 12 (very likely) and a log-jam of teams between 82 and 90 points. 89 gets us in! Why not?

A27, again, it has nothing to do with any of us being from Buffalo. It’s just that Buffalo got just as many points against us as they did against Tampa or the Isles and even less against Ottawa even though they played them 2 more times. So to say we knocked them out of the playoffs when so many other bad teams held them to 4 points or less is a bit off.
Now from a rivalry standpoint I will give you that, it is great to beat them especially when they wear those ugly jerseys (which most people in Buffalo can’t stand). The only non-playoff team Buffalo did well against (and extremely well at that) was Toronto and don’t think that was a coincidence.
We got 9 points against Tampa which is a rivalry team but I’ll be just as pissed at Thrasher fans on a Thrashers blog if someone shoots up a flare for that feat.

WBF, you gotta love that we beat the Sabres and stopped them from making the playoffs. If they did make it they would’ve gotten killed by the Bruins. Instead, they wound up picking 12th in the draft and got power forward Zach Kassian, the same guy that almost separated John Tavares shoulder with one of the hits of the year. Islander fans are pissed because they also had the pick right of ahead of Buffalo and passed on the guy. They could’ve had Kassian-Tavares for the next decade. But that’s why they are the Isles.
