Well, WE got Peverley today, and all the Devils did was sign Brendan Shanahan.
Like I said last week – lowest rung UFAs and waiver wire cast offs. This is embarrassing.Boy… Bet #17 is thrilled that we got… What’s his name off WAIVERS!!!!!!!!!
This is another LOSER move by The Career LOSER Dumb Don Waddell… I’d felt better is Spezza was the player claimed or traded for…
Loved Waddell’s comments, ‘He’s a guy we like’… Boy that is scary, well Nashville did not like him and these waiver claims never do one DAMN thing to help the club… This circus is just sick to watch !
We just happened to be there to pick up their sloppy seconds.
My first thought after reading that the Thrashers had picked up Rich Peverley was…. who the hell is Rich Peverley? Oh, that’s right, just another Waddellicacy from the bottom-of-the-barrel buffet.
The above is merely a sampling of some of the comments made last January when the Atlanta Thrashers snatched Rich Peverley off of the waiver wire. Needless to say, his arrival here did not come with a great deal of fanfare and excitement.
At the time, Nashville was trying to make room on their roster because a couple of players were coming off injuries and they were attempting to send Peverley down to the AHL. However, according to the story I’ve been told, coach John Anderson noticed that the 26-year old had been placed on waivers and insisted that Don Waddell claim him. In doing so, the Thrashers made the waiver wire steal of the year.

Rich Peverley, (#47), helped lead Thrashers to a winning record in the second half of last season - AP photo/Gregory Smith
I have to be honest with ya…when I first heard of the Peverley pick-up, I had to scratch my head as well. In 27 games with the Preds, he had a very underwhelming 2 goals and 7 assists and the only real reason that I saw for the acquisition was to fill the roster spot being vacated by the departing Jason Williams.
Seriously, raise your hand if you leapt from your seats after learning that the Thrashers had just claimed him off of the wire.
Uh-huh, yeah…that’s what I thought.
Of course, Thrashers fans were a very testy bunch that day. We had just watched as the Panthers built a snowman on Atlanta’s defense, beating them 8-4 during a Saturday matinee game in south Florida to drop the Thrashers’ record to 14-24-5…33 points after 43 games played. But ya know, it just didn’t take the Peever very long to cause the residents of Thrasherville to separate their fannies from the seats in Philips Arena… jumping up and down, roaring their approval of this player who had gone completely unnoticed in his short NHL career.
In just his second game in a Thrashers uniform, he played a major role in one of Atlanta’s most thrilling come-from-behind wins. Down 3-0 to the Toronto Maple Leafs after one period of play, Peverley and the then recently-named-captain Ilya Kovalchuk road a wave of energy provided by the Thrashers’ lower lines and beat the Leafs 4-3 in overtime.
Peverley assisted on two goals, including Kovalchuk’s game-tier with 4:52 remaining in the third. Pevs then finished off the comeback with the game-winner with but 69 seconds left before a shootout would have been required to decide matters.
The very next night, Peverley and his new teammates traveled up the road and preyed upon his former team, the Predators. In the 7-2 Thrashers victory, Peverley assisted on three goals to give him a total of five assists for the weekend…all in just the second and third games played for his new team. Add to that count the overtime goal, and fans started to pay the man some attention.
Where is arrival was met with much pessimism, his play quickly dispensed of such.
His ability to set up scores for his line mates earned him the nickname The Pevs Dispenser and the new top line formation of Kovy-Peverley-Armstrong was dubbed the AK-47 line… given the #47 worn on Peverley’s jersey. As things progressed, he continued to be a main part in Atlanta’s strong play and winning record from the time he joined the team to the end of the season.
Peverley wound up scoring 13 goals and 22 assists in 39 games and was a +16 as a Thrasher. Five of his goals were game winners.
As impressive as he was on the offensive side of the ice, he was equally strong on the other end where he played a very smart and responsible defensive game. This was something he brought with him from his days playing on Nashville’s third line…where you played well on defense or, as he put it, you were gone. It was also a style of play not common in these parts…which is why it stood out to so many.
Now the question is…can he build on that success and perform to such a level during a full season? If he does, it’ll make for quite a fine year.
If you take is numbers from last year with the Thrashers and project it over the course of 82 games, it equates to 27 goals and 46 assists. His +16 would…if simply projecting out for a full season’s play…amount to a +34. To place that in proper prospective, those 73 points would have been good enough to tie Todd White for third-highest on last year’s team.
That wouldn’t be too bad, especially considering that the Thrashers organization will only be playing $487,500 for his services this season…quite the bargain, eh?

Thrashers27 – I saw that too about Satan possibly coming to ATL but coming from Eklund….you know what I mean. I am still curious though about Zherdev. I just checked all the signings on The Hockey News and it does NOT show that he signed with any team (ie. the KHL) yet. Would D-Wad and Duds still be persuing him or did anyone hear that Zherdev had no interest in ATL?

lee, given Waddell always did way better in trades than the draft, I think it has more to do with that as to how he can strike gold with a waiver wire pickup. For whatever reason we are far better at evaluating NHL guys than undrafted young guys but that seems to be changing in the last few years given our young core now.

Brenden – Hockey News has been quite up to date and nothing on Sykora either.
EOB – There was another story printed somewhere after the 8/11 article you provided stating that the story may have been a fabrication by Zherdev’s agent saying that he MIGHT sign or he has OFFERS from that KHL team. He is still young (24) and would be a great pickup, especially to replace Kozlov when he hangs them up. Are they not similar style players? And who better to ask then Antropov who played with him the last couple months. If Antropov comments to take a closer look, the Thrashers should. That would be an awesome line of Kovy Antropov and Zherdev. Little white russian line 2 and Pevs, Reasnr, and Army playing the 3rd (Pevs and Reasoner could get that PK chemistry working) and the Boults, Slaters and Thor 4th line

ex-STH, once I heard KHL I put the guy out of my mind, so you probably know more than I do at this point. I am not a big fan of Zherdev. As for Kozlov’s replacement, I already have Evander Kane penciled in for that spot once Kozlov sails into the sunset. And the way you have things I don’t think Peverley would be effective at all on the 3rd line.

I just wonder if Kovy would want either Sykora or Satan? That aside, how long of a contract would either player want? Would they really sign 1-year deals? Iffff they would, we’d still wind up overpaying for that year. Though, the silver lining would be … it doesn’t affect the 2010-11 cap. Did Max Afinagenov sign anywhere yet? I don’t want him. I’m just asking a question. I could see Max in the KHL.

Brendan, I don’t think it would matter with Sykora or Satan for Kovalchuk because anyone we sign is going to be a 3rd line guy. Our top 6 is set. I don’t see Satan there on the bottom 6, maybe Sykora but not really. We need a good defensive forward to play LW.
I agree on Max, there is no way I want him near this team. I still see he’s unsigned. The only other recent rumors of NHL guys I saw on that KHL site was Chelios is receiving offers and Michael Nylander is rumored to be talking to Jagr’s team as they played together (I think in NYR or Was). No Afinogenov news.

Don’t know about Satan, he played OK with PIT last year until they bench him for awhile late in the season. He actually drew a penalty late in a game against the Thrashers last season with unusual hustle. The game was tied when he drew the penalty, Pittsburgh won on a later PPG.

WBF, I think it’s unanimous that Max needs to go to the KHL.
Here’s something interesting, I clicked on the article for the Chelios KHL offers and it was an ESPN blog. Not that I place this that far above Eklund but it says he wants to go to his hometown of Chicago, but since the Hawks are stacked he might just end things with the Wolves. That would be quite odd.
“Another option might be his hometown Chicago Wolves of the AHL. That remains to be seen, he said. The Blackhawks? That would be ideal, of course, to finish his career with his former team.”

Guys We have learned in the past that spending money on these types of players has not worked. Last year we gave the young guys a chance and they came through. I think giving Kane a shot for that 3rd line LW slot is going to work.
Looks like the Kovy negotiations are picking up steam. Give Kovy his money, do not waste it on 3rd line players from other teams. There has to be a reason they have not signed any place else. Kovy can carry this young team on his back.

Smitty, although I think a big part of the reason that they haven’t signed anywhere else is due to the fears of a retracting cap # next year, I think you are correct that we can pass on these old dogs. Find a young defensive LW and if that doesn’t happen give it to Kane and I won’t complain.

I say Zherdev or nobody… Kovy’s gotta realize that any major signing is going to bump White, Kozlov, Peverley or Little off the top two lines… anyone we sign has to be a guaranteed 60-70 Point scorer, and an obvious upgrade to one of the above four players.
I think Zherdev has the best shot at being a big point producer… at the very least, he brings 200+ shots on goal. Something we’ve always needed.

I gotta think there will be an eleventh hour deal between Versus and DirecTV that will keep the network on the air. Comcast is usually the bully here, and they are getting some of their own medicine. I happen to have Dish Network – which I recommend because a single box can run up to 3 TV’s which can save a tidy sum every month. I wonder what this does to the future of the NHL on Vs. Does this give the league the ability to back out of the deal as Vs. will lose 1/3 of their auduence? Does ESPN come back into the fold?
As for Peever – glad to have him, and that he didn’t get 37 as some of us feared.

Alan, I disagree because while he may not be a Torts kind of guy, Zherdev was also in trouble with Tom Renney who was a “players coach”. So whether it is the hard guys like Hitchcock or Torts or the soft guys like Renney, Zherdev was in the doghouse with all 3 of his previous NHL coaches he had. I have a hard time believing 4th time’s the charm with Anderson.
”Zherdev’s season was marked by intermittent stretches of indifference that earned benchings from both Tom Renney and John Tortorella, head coaches of disparate approaches and personalities who both were frustrated by the winger’s failure to compete on a consistent basis.”

Here you go Alan:
The Atlanta Thrashers are hoping they did enough this offseason to lure back Ilya Kovalchuk — and, thus far, it looks like they did.
Kovalchuk said he would not extend his contract with the Thrashers until the team proved they were moving in the right direction. Well, seeing that the Thrashers and Kovalchuk have exchanged contract proposals, it looks like the Thrashers’ all-time leading scorer is ready to come back.
“I feel very confident that at some point — I don’t know when that point will be — but at some point, we will get a contract done,” Waddell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, adding that talks have been civil.
This offseason, the Thrashers added defenseman Pavel Kubina and forward Nik Antropov — moves Kovalchuk was happy about.

Earl of Crappy Beer, I have a hard time taking the NY Post seriously when it comes to …well, any news at all. He was benched under Renney, sure, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t play well. Did you watch any Rangers games, or are you counting on words out of crappy “news” sources that somehow support your line of thinking? Then again, I’ve had this talk with you before. It doesn’t surprise me that you would pop up with the same tired arguments.
The fact is, Zherdev played much better under Renney than he did under Torts. He would do better here because he would have a good coach in Anderson, and a successful fellow Russian leading the team.
Assuming Zherdev comes here, If he slips up, it won’t be Anderson he’ll have to worry about. You can count on that.

Thanks ranallo10 (in AT), I think this quote was quite nice as well:
““He said to me, ‘Look, we’d like to get a big guy that could help us on power play, like an [Nik] Antropov.’ Well, ironically, we got him.”
So Kovalchuk asked Waddell/Atlanta Spirit for Antropov and they go get him. We kind of assumed this all along but it’s nice to hear it from Gearon. Now it’s down to finding the midpoint of the two contracts offered.
The fact that Kovalchuk gave a contract to us, which is something I don’t think Hossa ever did (correct if I’m wrong but I don’t think he did) says that this is going to happen and I think before the season if not training camp. Sept 12 or sometime before will be a happy day on these blogs.

Alan, can we please have a talk about hockey without you resorting to name calling? Now let’s look at the facts: you admit that he was benched but yet you somehow say that the newssource that says he was benched is “crappy”? If Zherdev played so much better under Renney then why did Renney bench the guy so often?
You also state yourself that Torts is not happy with him. We also know because of the trade that went down that Hitchcock wasn’t happy with him. So how is it you can accuse me of bringing in “crappy” news sources when everything I quoted is factual information that you even admitted to? And in case you don’t remember, Torts and Hitchcock both have their name on the Stanley Cup.
Oh yes, it wasn’t a “crappy” news source that stated that Zherdev was not invited back to the Russian International team (for the upcoming Olympics), so there’s some more bridges that the guy has burned.

Further comparing Kozlov, Little and Zherdev…
Kozlov… 76 pts… -14… 165 shots
Little… 51 pts… -5… 172 shots
Zherdev… 58 pts… +6… 210 shots
I would say more shots equals more time in the offensive zone… thus supporting Anderson’s theory of “the best defense is a good offense.”
I would say Zherdev is not capitalizing on his chances, which you’d hope adding him to a line with Antro and Kovy would remedy.

Why are we hoping for Zherdev to sign here so much? I understand that he has a lot of skill and upside potential if he could find the right fit. But we’ve already invested in Antropov, who despite some solid seasons over the last 5 years, is still a bit of a risk at $4 M / year.
Also, we have already addressed our Top 6 through the draft with Kane, Klingberg and Morin. So we should be covered in the event Kozlov retires. However, if Kozzy can muster another 60 pt + campaign, I have a feeling he will be back for 2 more years, even in a diminished capacity.
But most notably, the Thrashers can’t afford much more than a depth signing ($2 M for Malhotra is probably the max, if true) since anything more could put us over the midpoint w/r/t the salary cap and thus ineligible for revenue sharing. That will certainly not happen.

Ever since the Rangers let Zherdev go, I’ve been all over the idea to bring him here. You can’t go wrong signing him to a 1 – 2 year deal to see how it works out. There definately is the cap space. And like someone commented earlier, I think Kaptain Kovy would have his skate constantly up Zherdev’s a$$ if he ever slowed down. Kovy “asked” for Antropov, why? I really think he would be a great “big brother” to the younger Ruskie (Zherdev). Kovalchuk seems to be most comfortable with fellow Russians (ie. Kozy). He would make it his mission to bring out the potential in Zherdev and if he wasn’t performing well, I’m sure there would be some LOUD Russian language running down the bench or in the locker room!.

GaVa-I agree that Zherdev can be a real good offensive player. But one of the conversations we have had on this blog centers around improving our overall team defense.
The general belief of Zherdev throughout the league is that he’s a dog who lacks the overall game. He’s 24 with a ton of offense and nobody has signed him.
Another concern I have is the pay cut he will have to take to fit in any NHL roster. He had extensive contract issues with Columbus. So I don’t know if the upcoming pay cut will sit well with this guy. He should be able to get more in the KHL.
If Anderson can get him to play both ends of the rink, we’d have a real good player on our hands.

The Post is laughable. Eklund routinely provides better journalism than anyone in the Post. Thus, it’s crappy. I hope I’ve cleared that up for you, Earl of Red Stripe.
However, you have yet to disprove the fact that he played better under Renney. However, I think Hokie proved my point: Zherdev played better under Renney.
Russian players need a different style of coaching. He played well under Renney because of how Renney coached, despite the benchings. Torts is all about calling players out and airing dirty laundry. You don’t treat Russians like that. The fact that Zherdev didn’t do anything in March and April is indicative of the style of coaching Torts brought to the team. Your failure to admit that, Earl of Milwaukee’s Best, just shows your refusal to accept all the facts. What you’re doing is throwing up only part of the story, while conveniently ignoring the rest of the facts.
It’s funny, though. I seem to vaguely recall there was someone else here at one time who engaged in these sort of tactics.

Zherdev is Kovy Lite…why would we want two of them on the same line?? Kovy already struggles with defensive lapses, eventhough he has improved greatly, so other than insurance for Kovy leaving, is there any real solid argument in favor of bringing in this underachiever??
Also, the revenue sharing aspect of the cap is going to dictate what this team’s management does until the ASG can find another investor to raise capital. Do you really think Zherdev would even consider a deal that is valued in the $2 – 2.5 M neighborhood? Doubtful at best.

Alan, I will concede that he had better statistics under Renney than he did under Torts. So that debate is over. Now let’s address this issue: even when Zherdev has a coach in Renney who treats him well and he is playing better, he still gets benched for periods of time. Why does that happen?
Also, who better knows how to treat Russian players than the Russian Olympic team? But they don’t want him either? It’s not a matter that he got cut, he didn’t even get invited to the tryout camp. Can you address that part of the story? Certainly this has nothing to do with a coach who doesn’t understand how to treat Russian players, right?
I don’t know what tactics these are that I am looking at the fact that he got routinely benched by the NHL coach he played the best for and the fact that the Russian team wants no part of him.

We just signed Antropov to a $4 mil/year deal, Kubina at $5 mil/year, and we supposedly offered Malhotra a $2 mil/year deal. So this probably means we signed our big money guys and only have that $2 – 2.5 mil to play with and as stated above, Zherdev wouldn’t even consider it.
