The Thrashers are offering VIP seating to those purchasing Mini-Plans for the upcoming season. Thirteen-game plans will get you seats on the glass for a game of your choice…purchasing a seven-game plan will get you into the First Horizon Club for a game of your choice.
Also, the Select-A-Seat will be held at Philips Arena this Sunday the 16th between 1 and 3 o’clock. Those looking to purchase season ticket plans will be able to do while there as well as tour the team locker room.

Wolves’ VP Of Operations Wins McKenzie Award
Congratulations are in order for the Chicago Wolves Vice President of Operations Courtney Mahoney as she was presented with the AHL’s 2008-09 Ken McKenzie Award. This award is given annually to a team executive who has been deemed to have most successfully promoted his/her organization.
Mahoney… a 34-year old native of Western Springs, Illinois… has for 13 seasons been in charge of community relations and game operation for the Thrashers’ AHL affiliate. Thanks to her efforts, the team has raised over $4 million for team charities during her tenure…more than $200,000 during last season alone. Two of the charities that have benefited from these donations are the Adopt a Dog and Read to Succeed programs.
Mahoney’s other duties include overseeing operations of all Wolves’ home games, which involves the playing of in-house music and overseeing the pre-game pyrotechnics show.
Of her service, Wolves Chairman of the Board Don Levin remarked, “Since being an intern during the birth of the Wolves, Courtney has been a nurturing leader of the organization…she has created the public persona of the team and without her we would have been much less than we are. I appreciate Courtney every day.”
The McKenzie Award is named after and honors Ken McKenzie, the founder and publisher of The Hockey News, and was first presented in 1978. McKenzie was honored in 1997 by the Hockey Hall of Fame as the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award winner.

ranallo10 – For over a year, I’ve attempted to explain the effect of offering incentives later rather than earlier to the ASG sales/marketing department.
If someone is rewarded for waiting for incentives, eventually the customer will learn to wait for incentives before purchasing ticket packages and thus actually slow cash flow to the ASG. The incentives should be either uniform or the best incentives should be offered earlier versus later. However, the ASG obviously didn’t pass psychology 101 or missed the lecture on operant conditioning and reinforcement.

h – The way to address that strategy is simple.
There should be a set group of ticket packages benefits and then a menu of one or two extra benefits from a menu of choices.
In that way, everyone is on an equal playing field instead of trying to guess when the best benefit will be offered.

@ranallo10 (in AT) – I live downtown and can get to the games with no problem so I go to all of them. I used to have season tickets to the Braves and Falcons. I love hockey to much to waste money on that now. I have had season tickets since the season before the lock out. I moved my seats last year when all the STH jumped ship. I was able to pick up some nice seats that I don’t want to take a chance on losing, they are in the front row in the 200s behind the attack twice net.
This allows me several things: 1) no one blocking my view 2) quick access to beer and the bathroom (in that order) 3) ability to hang banners in front of my seats. 4) Access to Thrash and the contests with Jaybird 5) the ability to quickly exit the building. Every other seat I have had through the years has none of these benefits.
I am a Thrasher fan and I want to support the team.

@Sadtoseeitthisway – I did not renew right away this year and ended up getting a nice perk. I was told that if I renewed I would get a whole Suite to one game this year. Now we all know it will be during the week against a bad (or southeast) team; but I get to have a bunch of friends get together and enjoy a game. I may even pay Phillips to bring some food and beer up so we can do it right. I hope everyone I invite will chip in of course….anyway back to what you want to know – what were the conditions? I had to renew (it was late after the first select-a-seat) and you had to spend over $5,000 for seats…I wonder how many of these incentives the Thrashers ticket reps are offering are getting out? I realize this does not affect a large number of STH based on the amount of people who have dropped their seats and the cost; however I doubt the ticket reps are going out of their way to share stuff like this with people who renewed on time…

Netminder — I’ve owned season tickets once at about the same area as you (but on the defend twice side). Had it not been for the cool STH couple I met at the seats I would say that the entire season was a complete rip off. Of your list of benefits, I only consider #1 to be worth selecting my own seat. To me easy access to the bathroom and refreshments, the ability to hang banners, access to Jaybird and Thrash, and a quick exit are not worth the face value price because I don’t mind standing in line (getting back to my seat with 10 minutes left between periods is no big deal to me), I have never and probably will never create a banner, Jaybird is “special” and I don’t have kids to “enjoy” Thrash’s antics, and finally I realize that no matter how quickly I get out of the arena I still have to wait in the same traffic lines everyone else who left early or quickly is in (unless you park in some of those few good lots off the beaten path, of course).
I’m not trying knock your choices for buying season tickets early, I completely understand them. I would be more inclined to take tickets the Stroz way by either getting them free, paying for the discounted tickets the ASG undoubtedly will offer because they cannot sell out games, or buying tickets off the street vendors for less than face value.
As a full season ticket holder I felt enraged when sitting next to an away fan who paid half as much as I did for the rights to see a bottom 5 payroll team get steamrolled by their favorite team. For the amount of money saved by buying tickets below face value I’m sure you could rent a suite for a game after one or two seasons.
But to each his own…I was curious what your incentive was. Thanks for answering.

@ranallo10 (in AT) – No problem. People have different opinions on things and I am happy to provide mine. The main reason I buy my seats is to see every Thrashers game. My wife and I have actually met another couple who are now some of our best friends and we now site together at games.
Over the years I have not had the perfect seats; however I have found them now (by my definition and allowed budget); and would be remiss to give them up at this point.
I agree about the away fans getting in for half price. If I had my wish the team would be good enough to make it impossible to get seats. Just think what that would mean for a second – the atmosphere provided by rabid Thrasher fans would be awesome.
The whole discounted ticket thing sucks as a paying STH now; however to be honest I would not be a STH now if not for one of their programs from the second (third?) season. I got to see a half season of bad hockey with buy one get one pricing and I bought full season tickets the next year.
A couple of other things to note about me is that I was born and raised in Atlanta so I have no hockey roots and never even paid attention to the sport before I attended a game here. My wife and I went to Toronto before last season to see the Hockey Hall of Fame.
For me though it does not matter if the team is good or bad; because regardless of their record I will pay to watch hockey (it beats baseball and football).
I do dream of the day the Thrasher get it together and have a chance at the cup.

CTV had great NHL coverage in the mid 80’s with Dan Kelly as their play by play man. They had national NHL games in Canada in Friday nights, with Hockey Night in Canada doing the games Saturday night. That lasted just a few years and went away shortly after Dan Kelly died. Kelly was one of the best play by play men ever, in any sport.

What do you think it would take to convert the ECHL Gwinnett Gladiators into the 30th AHL team?
I know it wouldn’t likely happen this year but for the 2010-2011 season. You would think the AHL would be open to the expansion after involuntarily suspending the Iowa Chops. That and this would be the only team in the southeast opening a new market.

Which is false, as he is Canadian.
Adam…I have been lobbying for the Glads to move up on this blog for years. With the majority of southern teams in the ECHL having either shut down or move to the lower classification SPHL, the time is now to move to the AHL and have our top tier farm team in our own back yard.

Given the level of control, or lack there of, with the Wolves it seems to make sense to make this move. There are 3 teams in IL as it is and Anaheim is stuck without a farm team. They may be keen on the idea too.

From what I understand the Iowa Chops will be back next year in some way, shape, or form. Concerning the Gladiators and going up a level the cost of the move is a major concern. The community supports a ECHL team very well, but the additional costs of fielding an AHL team is significant. Those costs would be hard to recover for the team.

No, it was just an event with his old elite league club MODO. He is likely training with them now.
By the way, it is remarkable how many good players that are born or fostered in örnsköldsvik, where MODO is located. It is a little town with 28 000 or so inhabitants!
MODO’s web site states “Anders Hedberg, Tomas Gradin, Anders Kallur, Bo Berglund, Lars Lindgren, Tomas Jonsson, Lars Molin, Markus Näslund, Peter Forsberg, Niklas Sundström, Anders Eriksson, Mattias Timander, Per Svartvadet, Hans Jonsson, Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Samuel Påhlsson and Mattias Karlin. The list of raised NHL players is long and distinguished, an outstanding 25 percent of the Swedish players in the National Hockey League originate from MODO Hockey. ”
Here is a couple of years old New York Times article “A puck-crazed town in Sweden churns out NHL stars.”:

So, if you do the math… they traded an imposing 254lb LW to the Ducks for a 174 lb LW.

Not only does this free up salary, but Artyukin was the one who put Tanguay out of commission last season.

The costs to run in the AHL are competitive with the ECHL because more of the costs are handled by the NHL parent club. Many of the players in the ECHL are free agents signed by the club and not part of the system thus the salaries are responsible to the ECHL team. Almost all players in the AHL are on a two way contract. There are a few AHL lifers, but not like the old IHL – as the AHL is truly a developmental league.
I also think the Glads can attract more fans by promoting the fact they are one step away from the NHL. The ECHL players are more of a long shot, many will never make it above the ECHL / European league level, and many will fall to the CHL and SPHL.
Ticket prices may rise by a buck or two. The place still has free parking and it’s a pretty damn nice little arena. I go to 6-8 games per year there, and that wouldn’t change should a slight hike occur.
Looks who’s left the league in just the last few years – Pensacola, Tallahassee, Birmingham, Augusta, Columbia, Macon, Lafayette, Gulfport, Jackson, Jacksonville, Orlando…if those teams has stayed for regional rivalries and shorter trips, I say stay in the ECHL. But we have no scuh neighbors any more.
Thrashers27 – the Flames will never be happy in Abbostford, just as they left QC, Omaha and Saint John. The void in QC was replaced by the re-launching of the team the Flames displaced, the Mallards.

I got a chance to see him several years ago @ The Bluebird in NYC-the guy was like 88 or something but still played his regular Tuesday night gig-two shows!!! (one early, then another after “dinner”). He was clean and smooth, I hope to be able to play half as well at that age.
Here’s a clip I found from one of his shows in ‘08-bear in mind he’s 93!!!!

His lead is @ the 1:35 mark or so

Glovesave29, excellent scoop on the Winter Classic. BU vs. BC is like having a “Beanpot” at the Winter Classic! This event keeps getting better and better.
Up in the stands, the mingling of Flyers fans and Bruins fans will certainly be interesting. Security reinforcements??
A big “mea culpa” D’oh! goes out to the bloggers. Kari Lehtonen will still be restricted on July 1, 2010. He will not have the age or NHL tenure to be a UFA next Summer. Which is good, I think. Assuming he doesn’t get traded. And I don’t think that’s going to happen. I had erroneously posted, on a previous blog, that Kari was free to pursue his options on July 1, 2010. I hope I haven’t ruined Stendec’s day with this correction.
For what it’s worth, I still think Kari Lehtonen is a goaltender worth retaining. I don’t like the idea of rushing young Pavelec up to NHL. Although, he seems to want to rush the process. I welcome Pavelec’s challenge to earn a roster spot at training camp. I haven’t checked available free agent goaltenders in about 3 weeks to month, but I think Curtis Joseph is still trying to find an NHL gig for next season. I can’t remember if Eddie Belfour finally retired, or what. Goalies seem to be hanging around longer and longer now. How old was Hasek when he finally hung it up? Definitively, I mean.
There are a handful of goalies I really want to track this season. Simeon Varlamov and J. Theodore, in Washington. Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask, Boston. Chris Mason. Pascal Leclair. How ’bout that red hot Jonas Hiller, in Anaheim? And let’s see how Vesa Toskala fares this season. And how ’bout the three goalies on Long Island? Biron, DiPietro, and Rolosson. Oh yeah, what about Khabibulin in Edmonton? Let’s see what happens there.

Toskela is another guy Leaf fans want out of Toronto, just like Kubina. It really does not matter how well he plays, Leafs fan have already designated him for assignment.

Tony C – I’m a music geek too, albeit a drummer and not a guitarist – plus I like the sound of a Strat over a Les Paul….but without ol’ LP, there’s no Strat either.
Long time Hawk Befour in StL….strange combination. As fellow former StLer five_hole can attest, Chicago and StL go together like ice cream and mustard.
