Wolves’ VP Of Operations Wins McKenzie Award

Congratulations are in order for the Chicago Wolves Vice President of Operations Courtney Mahoney as she was presented with the AHL’s 2008-09 Ken McKenzie Award. This award is given annually to a team executive who has been deemed to have most successfully promoted his/her organization.

Mahoney… a 34-year old native of Western Springs, Illinois… has for 13 seasons been in charge of community relations and game operation for the Thrashers’ AHL affiliate. Thanks to her efforts, the team has raised over $4 million for team charities during her tenure…more than $200,000 during last season alone. Two of the charities that have benefited from these donations are the Adopt a Dog and Read to Succeed programs.

Mahoney’s other duties include overseeing operations of all Wolves’ home games, which involves the playing of in-house music and overseeing the pre-game pyrotechnics show.

Of her service, Wolves Chairman of the Board Don Levin remarked, “Since being an intern during the birth of the Wolves, Courtney has been a nurturing leader of the organization…she has created the public persona of the team and without her we would have been much less than we are. I appreciate Courtney every day.”

The McKenzie Award is named after and honors Ken McKenzie, the founder and publisher of The Hockey News, and was first presented in 1978. McKenzie was honored in 1997 by the Hockey Hall of Fame as the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award winner.

Standec, your a dumb*ss in regards to soccer. So apparently, in your world beating the number one team in the world is pointless, losing to the number two team in the world by a goal is futile, and losing in one of the most harsh environments in soccer is unnaceptable… please? You are not a very educated soccer fan obviously since you would know that US is deat tired tired from playing in the confederation cup, sending all reserves we had to almost win the goald cup (mexico had to use its A team to do that to us), and then everyone is already playing their club ball. Please do not comment on a sport you really have no right to be talking about. And I’m not an all knowing thrashers fan, I’m actually a pretty accomplished soccer player. So shut up and go rant somewhere else.

Given the level of control, or lack there of, with the Wolves it seems to make sense to make this move. There are 3 teams in IL as it is and Anaheim is stuck without a farm team. They may be keen on the idea too.

Get a like minded coach to run the same system in Gwinnett and the proximity to the Duluth Ice Forum it just seems like a no brainer.

Adam,
From what I understand the Iowa Chops will be back next year in some way, shape, or form. They’re in a similiar situation as the Thrashers where they have a lease and an agreement (not to mention a judicial order) to keep a team in Des Moines and playing at Wells Fargo Arena, just bad ownership…Yeah, I’m from Des Moines, so I follow. There is a new team this year though in Abbotsford, BC. It’s a Calgary affiliate. Not sure what is to happen with the Quad City Flames.

@ Viking:

Thanks so much for the report on Tobias…so happy to hear he is back on the ice and working out with his Swedish compatriots. Is this a pre-cursor to the Team Sweden Olympic Camp try-outs much like what is about to happen here in the US and Canada?

Thrash27- The thought is still good in principal. I just don’t think The AHL would want or need more than 30 teams.

I was reading the Sporting News daily edition today and they had the preseason schedules for all of the teams. The Thrashers play 6 games and other teams play 7,8, or in Florida’s case, 9.

How is the number of preseason games determined?

Concerning the Gladiators and going up a level the cost of the move is a major concern. The community supports a ECHL team very well, but the additional costs of fielding an AHL team is significant. Those costs would be hard to recover for the team.

Smoothie,

No, it was just an event with his old elite league club MODO. He is likely training with them now.

By the way, it is remarkable how many good players that are born or fostered in örnsköldsvik, where MODO is located. It is a little town with 28 000 or so inhabitants!

MODO’s web site states “Anders Hedberg, Tomas Gradin, Anders Kallur, Bo Berglund, Lars Lindgren, Tomas Jonsson, Lars Molin, Markus Näslund, Peter Forsberg, Niklas Sundström, Anders Eriksson, Mattias Timander, Per Svartvadet, Hans Jonsson, Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Samuel Påhlsson and Mattias Karlin. The list of raised NHL players is long and distinguished, an outstanding 25 percent of the Swedish players in the National Hockey League originate from MODO Hockey. ”

Here is a couple of years old New York Times article “A puck-crazed town in Sweden churns out NHL stars.”:

Awesome!!

Tampa just traded Artyukin to the Ducks for Drew Miler and a pick.

So, if you do the math… they traded an imposing 254lb LW to the Ducks for a 174 lb LW.
However, I’d say all signs point to Tampa signing Tanguay soon.

Not only does this free up salary, but Artyukin was the one who put Tanguay out of commission last season.

The costs to run in the AHL are competitive with the ECHL because more of the costs are handled by the NHL parent club. Many of the players in the ECHL are free agents signed by the club and not part of the system thus the salaries are responsible to the ECHL team. Almost all players in the AHL are on a two way contract. There are a few AHL lifers, but not like the old IHL – as the AHL is truly a developmental league.

I also think the Glads can attract more fans by promoting the fact they are one step away from the NHL. The ECHL players are more of a long shot, many will never make it above the ECHL / European league level, and many will fall to the CHL and SPHL.

Ticket prices may rise by a buck or two. The place still has free parking and it’s a pretty damn nice little arena. I go to 6-8 games per year there, and that wouldn’t change should a slight hike occur.

Looks who’s left the league in just the last few years – Pensacola, Tallahassee, Birmingham, Augusta, Columbia, Macon, Lafayette, Gulfport, Jackson, Jacksonville, Orlando…if those teams has stayed for regional rivalries and shorter trips, I say stay in the ECHL. But we have no scuh neighbors any more.

Thrashers27 – the Flames will never be happy in Abbostford, just as they left QC, Omaha and Saint John. The void in QC was replaced by the re-launching of the team the Flames displaced, the Mallards.

The NHL has also announced that prior to this years Winter Classic at Fenway between the Flyers and Brooons, two NCAA games will be the lead ins – a womens game between Northeastern and New Hampster, and the men’s teams from BU and BC – AWESOME.

And a quick moment of silence for rock LEGEND Les Paul. Music today would be a helluva lot different had he not come around!

Indeed R.I.P. Les Paul… although I’d hesitate to use “rock legend” mabye “jazz great” or “music legend”… in fact the latter is most appropos ater all, he invented the electric guitar, multi-track recording as well as pitch bending, phased vocal recording etc., etc.

I got a chance to see him several years ago @ The Bluebird in NYC-the guy was like 88 or something but still played his regular Tuesday night gig-two shows!!! (one early, then another after “dinner”). He was clean and smooth, I hope to be able to play half as well at that age.

Here’s a clip I found from one of his shows in ‘08-bear in mind he’s 93!!!!

His lead is @ the 1:35 mark or so

Glovesave29, excellent scoop on the Winter Classic. BU vs. BC is like having a “Beanpot” at the Winter Classic! This event keeps getting better and better.

Up in the stands, the mingling of Flyers fans and Bruins fans will certainly be interesting. Security reinforcements??

A big “mea culpa” D’oh! goes out to the bloggers. Kari Lehtonen will still be restricted on July 1, 2010. He will not have the age or NHL tenure to be a UFA next Summer. Which is good, I think. Assuming he doesn’t get traded. And I don’t think that’s going to happen. I had erroneously posted, on a previous blog, that Kari was free to pursue his options on July 1, 2010. I hope I haven’t ruined Stendec’s day with this correction.

For what it’s worth, I still think Kari Lehtonen is a goaltender worth retaining. I don’t like the idea of rushing young Pavelec up to NHL. Although, he seems to want to rush the process. I welcome Pavelec’s challenge to earn a roster spot at training camp. I haven’t checked available free agent goaltenders in about 3 weeks to month, but I think Curtis Joseph is still trying to find an NHL gig for next season. I can’t remember if Eddie Belfour finally retired, or what. Goalies seem to be hanging around longer and longer now. How old was Hasek when he finally hung it up? Definitively, I mean.

There are a handful of goalies I really want to track this season. Simeon Varlamov and J. Theodore, in Washington. Tim Thomas and Tuukka Rask, Boston. Chris Mason. Pascal Leclair. How ’bout that red hot Jonas Hiller, in Anaheim? And let’s see how Vesa Toskala fares this season. And how ’bout the three goalies on Long Island? Biron, DiPietro, and Rolosson. Oh yeah, what about Khabibulin in Edmonton? Let’s see what happens there.

Tony C – I’m a music geek too, albeit a drummer and not a guitarist – plus I like the sound of a Strat over a Les Paul….but without ol’ LP, there’s no Strat either.

Long time Hawk Befour in StL….strange combination. As fellow former StLer five_hole can attest, Chicago and StL go together like ice cream and mustard.
