March was a very good month for the Atlanta Thrashers…I’m almost sad to see it go. As you know, the team went a very impressive 9-4-0 in the thirteen games played and have given some hope to us fans for what could be come this fall. Here are some other stats that stand out from this past month.
Of the nine wins, five of them game against teams that currently hold…or held at the time played…playoff positions, (Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton, Washington and the New York Rangers).
The Thrashers scored 49 goals in the thirteen games. While three of those were “gimmick” goals created by shootout wins, still…that’s a goals per game of 3.77 for the month. I’ll take that anytime, anyway it can be had. The O-fensive production from the month has risen Atlanta’s overall G/G stat to 3.03, which is the ninth highest in the league. If maintained, it would be the team’s second best showing ever in that category. In 2005-06, the Thrashers scored goals on the average of 3.37 per game.
Atlanta gave up 41 goals in March. Now, that’s really not good seeing that it equates to a 3.15 GA/G average…however 44% of those goals came in three games when Montreal, Detroit and Pittsburgh each scored 6 in their wins. In the other ten games, the Thrashers gave up only 2.30 goal on the average.
Atlanta’s defense helped Kari Lehtonen notch a pair of shutouts…a 2-0 win on the 6th when Montreal was in town, then four nights later it was a 3-0 victory in Colorado.
The Thrashers went 3-0 in shootouts as well this past month. In those three exhibitions, Atlanta’s goaltending did not allow even as much as a single goal. Kari Lehtonen stopped all four he faced in Buffalo while Johan Hedberg held the Lightning and the Rangers at bay in those two wins. Moose stopped two in Tampa while one sailed wide. He then turned away five against New York while the Rangers missed one. That’s a total of 0-13 in shootout attempts for our opponents with 11 of them needing to be saved.
Atlanta’s defense held the shots against stat to under 30 per game…29.5 in the past 13 games. However, if you remove that 50 shot performance by Washington, the blueline held the opposition to just 27.7 SA/G in the remaining twelve March games. Seven times they held the opposition to fewer shots than their 32.8 SA/G season average.
Ilya Kovalchukmissed the better part of three games with an injury to his back, however he still managed to finish with 6 goals and 10 assists in the ten full games he played in. Two goals and five assists came on the power play.
Kari Lehtonen went 5-3-0 with a 2.74 GAA and .918 SV%. And, of course, he shutout Montreal and the Avs.
Johan Hedberg was 4-1-0, stopping 112 of the 130 shots he faced. Also, as discussed earlier, was won both shootout games he was in by not allowing any goals on nine attempts. Moose is now 11-10-3 for the season.
Todd White had 4 goals 10 assists in the thirteen games. Included was a 9-game points streak.
Slava Kozlov had six goals and sixteen overall points including 4 goals and 7 assists on the power play.
Bryan Little netted six and helped out on another. Half of those goals were while the Thrashers were on the man advantage.
Rookie Zach Bogosian got in on the act with three goals and six points…finishing the month at a plus-2. That may just very well be the last time I use the word “rookie” with the name “Bogosian”.
Garnet Exelby was a plus-3 for the month and helped out on a pair of goals.
And so…as March gives way to April this week, the Thrashers find themselves at 32-38-6 with the six games left to be played in the first couple weeks of April. Those 70 points are good enough for fourth place in the Southeast Division, five ahead of Tampa Bay, and 13th in the Eastern Conference, five behind Toronto. My bet is that those two positions won’t change.
However, in the overall NHL standings, Atlanta is in the 26th spot…one ahead of Phoenix which has seven games remaining including one tonight against Dallas. They are three behind the Kings who have a game in hand…but isn’t outside the realm of possibility that the Thrashers could catch L.A. and lift themselves out of the bottom five and, thus, not be included in the NHL draft lottery.
And for the record…yes, I still would see that as a good thing.
As for the upcoming schedule…well, there are the Sabres on Wednesday who simply has to win-out their remaining games to legitimately have a shot at the post-season. So, a win there just might do them in. Oh, and Atlanta is 3-0-0 vs. Buffalo this season…all overtime or shootout wins.
Then there is a pair of games with Florida and Washington. Currently, the Panthers sit one single game below eighth place Montreal with one fewer game to play. Those potential four points against us are HUGE! The Caps have all but wrapped up the Southeast but are currently in a battle with New Jersey for that second seed in the east. Right now, that is the difference between playing a very hot Pittsburgh team or a wish-washy Rangers squad. Which one would you wanna face?
So, there is much to still play for as the season closes out. Not only for the betterment of the Thrashers themselves…but also to continue screwing things up for others.

I’m very much in favour of people who have resided in this town for ten or more years, being forced to leave if they can not warmly and enthusiastically support the local teams. I don’t care if you peed in Wrigley when you were 6. I dont care if your brother in law ran the concession stand at Yankee Stadium. Roman Gabreil made a pass at your mother, tough sheet. Get behind the teams that are here. Do it now and quit passing yourself off as a fan of a team from a city that you left[abandoned].
Nuff said.

ranallo, It’s not a delay, it’s a bug in the blog software. Just refresh it a few times, and it’ll eventually come up.
I’ve posted comments and see them appear, then refresh ten minutes later and see it, and the previous one, gone. Refresh again, and it’s back.

Things keep getting messier and messier for Toronto. Not so sure what Cliff Fletcher was doing when he thought this would be a good idea, but it looks like Burke has inherited more than he may have bargained for.

In the “point totals contest,” a few people were eliminated tonight. LAC, R.Stroz and Sage of Bluesland are out. Points 71 and 72 did you in. NASCARDAve, you’re still alive at 72-points. Bob, you’re still in it, at 73-points. Russ and ThrasherNY, you’re still alive at 74-points. 12345 and Brickhouse, you’re very much alive at 75-points. Don, you’re sitting very nicely at 76-points, tied to 4th in the division and 14th in the Conference. Glovesave is right there with you at 76-points, with the T-birds finishing 5th in the SE and 14th in the Conference.
Sharon and Smoothie, you’re there at 77-points. PJ, Brendan, and Polskidawg are alive with 78-points. Buzilla and Jarndyce are still alive at 80-points.
The following three (3) are teetering on the edge of elimination, at 82-points: Michael B. Shapiro, sweetlew, and Thrashers27.
If you didn’t hear your name called, you are eliminated. But thanks for playing.
Smoothie , your pick is looking like the one to beat, since you’ve got the Thrashers with 77-points, tied to 4th in the division, and 13th in the Conference. If Atlanta goes 2-2-1, or 0-0-5, for that matter, you’ll win.

I really felt for those poor pituful slug fans as they were leaving the arena tonight to wonderful chants such as GO HOME BUFFALO, fans holding up four fingers, and other general pleasantries.
APRIL FOOLS!
Nothing like pouring salt on a slug.

Brendan – I can’t think of a better way of losing the point contest than a win against the slugs.

Brenden, I sure wish we had 100 points, Nice to lose on my point pick…
Maybe next year…. “Moving Forward ?”
I am just stunned at the play since the west coast trip, need to check, but… I think we have been better than a number of higher up teams…
Let’s hope we shore up the defense and add a couple scorers for next season ! Cheers !!!!

Every once in a blue moon, it seems that LAC and myself agree on something. We do need a couple of scorers – a third line guy and a second line guy, methinks, as well as a good D-man – maybe two. Get it done, Donny Wad.
It’s really funny, though. This team looked so far away in November. They had their fluke win streak, and went back to sucking it up. Now, they’ve pretty much played lights out, they’ve played strong. People seem to want to attribute this to Atlanta playing more open, since they “have nothing to play for.” That’s fine, really. But isn’t that what the Anderson system is? Playing more open? The boys are hustling out there, and it’s really nice to see that sort of work being put in, whether it’s a game we should win or a game we may very well lose (PIT, DET).
I’m looking past all this and towards the draft, lottery be damned.

Alan — The thing is eating some comments too…I was not speaking of the bug you mentioned. No matter, it wasn’t anything special I said prior to my 5-minute question.

I still have the sounds of Philips ringing in my ears (or is that R.Stroz’s bullhorn? What a way to win!
Met a very nice 14 year old girl in a fedora last night, Ms. Julienne (sorry if I misspelled your name). She’s grown up watching Thrasher’s hockey, and is a huge fan of the game.
The slug fans were loud before & during the game, but seemed really quiet when they left. Wonder why? Maybe getting swept by us (and eliminated from the playoffs) had something to do with it?
If we can play this way next October, we will definitely make the playoffs, regardless of free agency & the draft!

News here… With NYI loss and our win last night, we are eliminated from being the worst team in the NHL… CANNOT happen.
Get real tired of these other cities refering to us as a team who their club should beat…. Like in The Buffalo News, they talk about how bad Atlanta is and Buffalo should not lose toan out of the playoff team…
Well you Buffalo Slug crybabies, we whipped you 4 times this season, our record 4-0 vs Buffalo… So who is NOT going to the playoffs ????
Enjoy the off season Lindy !

ranallo, I believe I do know what you’re talking about. I think it’s just the kinks need to be worked out of the system.
I’ll refer to it as a bug, though, just with a different part of the blog software.

I’d like to report that there are nice/decent buffalo fans. We scored great seats in 109 thanks to the death of a Macaw, but it was Buf. attackX2 so we were surrounded by Buffalo fans.
I’d like to shout out Mike, who works here @ Sutra lounge, very decent guy, cheered loud for his Sabres but never once did he or his friends degenerate into the sort of name-caling and craptasticness we saw at the beginning of the game (I still thought you were gonna knock that guy’s block off Stroz).
What a finish!
I think that a Thrashers-Sabres game may just be the best value in the NHL….when’s the last time a game between us was decided in regulation?
Other thoughts: Wow Hainsey’s game has detriorated since the beginning of the year. Bogosian makes you catch your breath-most of the time it’s for a good thing, but every once in awhile, you can tell he’s 18. Enstrom needs to shoot more, Hainsey needs to shoot A LOT more. More guys need to be looking for rebounds, I saw at least 3 “plus-plus” scoring opportunities, but nobody in front of the net, or nobody looking for a rebound. In particular, Slava left two or three shot-pass rebounds right there, only to see them swept away as Armi was tied up and Peverly was pushed out of the way.
Any word on Salmela?
Watching the Washington squad, I think that if DW gives Anderson the horses, we might just be seeing blueland open for business during the playoffs.
Nice seeing yall last night, great win.

I couldn’t agree more, R.Stroz. And, your guess was leading the way, for most of the season, until the team had a big upsurge. Hockey Biltong, let me check my records. But right now, the only guesses I have from you were the “budget contest,” where you entered $48.0 million for opening night. It’s possible, in the multitude of blogs, and blog entries, that I missed yours. And if I did, My Bad.
I’ll double-check my files tonight to see if I do have one from you. Anyone with more than 82-points or less than 71-points has been eliminated.
