NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza ‘09!

Good afternoon everyone…welcome to NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza ‘09! Over the next day or so, like so many of you, I will be glued to NHL Live on XM’s Channel 204 and/or The NHL Channel on cable awaiting news of Thrashers trades as they occur! As they happen over the next day or so I’ll be updating this blog so keep checkin’ in. As always, if you hear of a noteworthy deal that goes down around the league…post it up!

You are all hearby officially deputized as cyber-reporters for this event, so as news breaks…post it up for us all to see.

We are still just over a day away from Wednesday’s 3:00 pm trade deadline but there has been a few deals that have gone down already. Yesterday, as I’m sure you’ve all heard by now, Nic Havelid was sent packing to the New Jersey Devils in return for Anssi Salmela, a 24- year old Nordic blueliner who played for the Finnish national team. This follows the trade that sent Mathieu Schneider to Montreal for draft picks. Both Havelid and Schneider will be UFAs this summer and their being moved came as no real surprise.

As we have discussed, other Thrashers unrestricted free agents that may be playing elsewhere by Wednesday night include Marty Reasoner and Eric Perrin. The latter has made it very clear that he would welcome a change of venue.

I also have this feeling that Kari Lehtonen could be up on the blocks. Recently the team held talks with his agent and now I come to understand that his parents are in town. I could be reading too much into that, but we’ll see.

Regardless, I would not be stunned if Hedberg or Kari is dealt away. If it’s Moose instead of Kari, then it means the organ-I-zation is comfortable with having Odrej Pavalec on the big-boy squad now and we’ll have a Kari-Opie tandem in the net.

Also, there have been some players of note from around the league that have been placed on waivers today.

The Thrashers do not play Wednesday night, and won’t until they welcome the Habs to Philips Arena on Friday. So, unlike last year when they were in Montreal on the deadline date, there won’t be a mad scramble to call up Wolves players to fill in gaps created by trades.

The following games are on the schedule for tomorrow however…Montreal at Buffalo and Detroit at Colorado.

Last year Dan Kamal posted a blog over on the Thrashers web site indicating his belief that the NHL should schedule no matches on the trade deadline date and I must say that I agree 100% with that. I’d also like to have it where all teams have exactly the same amount of games after the deadline as they go down the stretch. That’s probably not possible given that there are so many teams sharing their home arena with NBA teams…as is the case with the Thrashers…but still, I think it’d be a good goal to strive for.

UPDATE: Mar. 3, 1:17 pm: And as sure as hell is hot…as soon as I posted this, I learn that Eric Perrin has been placed on waivers per the TSN link provided above.

UPDATE: Mar. 4, 9:17 am: Dan Kamal was just on Hockey This Morning, (XM-204) with Scott Laughlin. Kamal indicated that he expects DW to be “very busy” today discussing deals but he does not see any “earth shattering” trades to go down. He also pointed to last Saturday’s come-back win vs. Carolina as something that reminded him of the atmosphere created a few years back when the Thrashers were making playoff runs.

Players Kamal discussed:

Kari: He not only thinks he will NOT be traded, but feels he is a “cornerstone” player to build a team around.

Moose & Opie:He expects there will some interest shown for these two.

Kozlov:Kamal said Kozzy wants to stay and “be a part of the turnaround” and does not think he’ll be dealt today.

Perrin:He’s very disappointed that things did not work out for him this season.

Kovalchuk: Kamal said that “priority ONE is re-signing” Kovy for the Thrashers…and there is no 1-a or 1-b to this.

UPDATE: Mar. 4, 12:30 pm: Don Waddell was a guest on NHL Live with Clement & Fox, ( I’m listening via XM). Not a lot to report but he did express the desire to “change the makeup of the team”. Also, he said that the team needs some more “size up front”, (DUH5). Regarding the goalie situation, he did indicate that Pavs should be ready and that the situation at that position would “probably” be address this summer.

Oh, and when asked about moving Schneids so early before the deadline was because the deal was there for the taking and it was a money saving move.

UPDATE: Mar. 4, 3:00 pm: The 3:00 pm deadline is here and…nothing. This does not mean a deal hasn’t been file with the league office and that, once finalized, we then hear it announced…but as for now….nothing.

:!:  UPDATE: Mar. 4, 3:08 pm: Thrashers send Erik Christensen to the Ducks in return for Eric O’Dell….an 18-year old who was drafted by the Ducks in the 2nd round of last summer’s draft, (39th overall). He is a 6′-0″, 174 lb centerman who shoots right. Currently, O’dell is with the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL and has 14 goals, 18 assists and is a +10 in 29 games.

I just listened to Dan Kamal on HTM, (XM-204) with Scott Laughlin…there is an update on the original post discussing what he had to say regarding some of the players that are rumored to bed moved.

The bottom line is that he expects no “earth shattering” moves to be made today.

Five_Hole – I was think of last year’s Zednick incedent last night too. That was scary indeed!

D.W. just getting interviewed by TSN.CA right now.

He says:
- They are getting a lot of calls (not as many as last year)
- Hainsey isn’t going to be traded.
- Kari is getting calls, but D.W. wants to wait until the summer. Sounds like the chance Kari gets traded is slim
- He was asked if they are going to make a trade today and he said yes.

The Ottawa Senators were the first team out of the gate on Deadline Day, trading winger Antoine Vermette to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for goaltender Pascal Leclaire.

Waddell didn’t seem very convincing to me on the Lehtonen deal… I’d say if the Van Reimsdyk deal comes to fruition, he’ll take it.

Eklund has it rumored that Philly is looking at Bryzgalov too.

Hossa has every right to go where he wants. He had no decision in coming here. Can you honestly be upset at him for leaving the worst run franchise in hockey? Are you gonna bash Kovy when he leaves? This is the worst team to play for. Are you mad at free agents because they don’t want to sign here. Hossa didn’t do anything wrong by not re signing, he did the right thing.

That’s a nice enhancement, obviously. Though…sometimes refreshing the screen causes new posts to disappear, then reappear later.

You know, I’ve been very harsh on DW before but I was thinking about something last night… DW gets a lot of grief from the fans, which is rightly deserved in most cases, but his history of trading and acquiring players isn’t really that bad. Sure, he got hosed on the Zhitnik/Coburn deal as well as the Tchacuk trade but what if le Thrash DIDN’T make the playoffs that year. How many of you fans would have had a heart attack? Those two players were key to that final run and Coburn WAS NOT going to get us there that year.

Think of the players he has brought in – Heatley, Kovy ( a no brainer), Lehts (not a terrible goalie and still YOUNG), Pavalec, Little, Oystrick, Valabik, Enstrom, Exelby… these are just drafted players mind you and some of the better ones were WAY down the list.

SAVARD, What was Savard doing before he came here? He was wasting away and his career was dead.

This year, PEVERLY…

This year has been a bust and if you hadn’t noticed, since some of the old timers have gone, this team has gotten better. Maybe the veterans just didn’t get it and it’s time to move on.

Nice pick-up for Calgary IMO, depending on the pick. I am guessing it’s a 2nd or 3rd.

Also, did everyone see Buffalo re-signed Connoly for 2 yrs./$9 mil. ??? Seems like a lot of money for a guy who plays about 40 games a year.

So with Jokinen going to Calgary, what are they going to do with Camallieri? Are they not over the cap now? I’d love to see our clueless GM work something out with the Flames to get exclusive negotiating rights. With Toronto taking Gerber, I’d say the market for goalies is pretty weak, and we’d get nothing for Lehtonen.

Smoothie

March 4th, 2009
1:42 pm

Does anyone think that DWad is entertaining serious offers for Lehtonen because a) the ASG is too cheap to pay him $3-4 M long-term this summer and b) using Hedberg full-time down the stretch would seriously improve our chances of getting the 2nd pick (Hedman) by weakening our D even further after trading Havelid?

I don’t see Pavs getting the call to play in March / April since he’s better off going through another Calder Cup run this spring. BTW, he’s been on fire lately stopping 40+ shots on several occasions in the past 2 weeks.

Just over an hour to go and still nothing as far as the Thrashers go. But remember, it wasn’t until just minutes before 3:00 pm last year before we heard of the Hossa/Dpuis to Pittsburgh deal.

*Kozlov:Kamal said Kozzy wants to stay and “be a part of the turnaround” and does not think he’ll be dealt today.*

What the eff? Kozlov CAN’T be dealt today unless he waives his NTC. and he’s never indicated any willingness to do so.

I’m disappointed re: Perrin. He’s among my favorite players, and I just have not been happy WRT him in this season.

I hope Reasoner stays. Heck, he’s taken the worst beating of any player on Le Thrash. I’ve never seen a player with so many broken teeth and black eyes. Hopefully he stays here and keeps fighting.

Yay! Grant Lewis!

re: waivers, how awesome would it be for us to pick up Miro Satan and Gary Roberts?

Smoothie – If Pavs has been stopping 40+ shots on several occasions it sounds like he is getting the proper training to play behind Atlanta’s defense.

There were reports Dominic Moore had been traded from the Leafs to Chicago, but I haven’t seen anything official.

Rawhide

March 4th, 2009
2:18 pm

glovesave – Yeah, I just heard that confirmed on NHL Live.

For what it’s worth, I think Florida does not trade Bouwmeester…instead deciding to keep him for the playoff run. That team feels that they HAVE to make the post-season this year and they need him for that. Sure, it means he may walk this summer for nothing, but they’ll take that risk.

In essence, he becomes their rental player.

Glovesave29

March 4th, 2009
2:22 pm

Rawhide…totally agree. Keep him all season, then trade him after the season and before FA begins on 7/1 if he will not resign. The Panthers are a good young team. After all the bad hockey he has seen, I gotta feel he’s pretty excited about their direction. Plus, winning on a team you have been through a lot of adversity with sure is satisfying. Although tsn.ca still think he is going to Vancouver.

Sara

March 4th, 2009
2:31 pm

Glovesave – says who? There’s wiggle room in their budget given some of the other FAs they could let walk instead (like Aucoin who makes $4M). All accounts have been that Camalleri is happy in Calgary so he might be willing to settle for a low number – at least for one season until Jokinen’s contract is up.

I get that there cap is tight, but it isn’t going to be impossible for them to make it work out.

Glovesave29

March 4th, 2009
2:38 pm

Sara…they gave up a first rounder and two decent players for Jokinen. That is why they will keep him. Don’t forget, the cap will more than likely go down next season. Someone will have to go. Not sure I would give up a puck moving defensemen. Look at the team at Philips – when you have a team that cannot transition from defense to offense, everything just kinda bogs down. Camalierri is a heckuva player, but a good center and slick defenseman is a better fit for the Flames and the style of game that Keenen likes to play.
