NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza ‘09!

Good afternoon everyone…welcome to NHL Trade Deadline-A-Palooza ‘09! Over the next day or so, like so many of you, I will be glued to NHL Live on XM’s Channel 204 and/or The NHL Channel on cable awaiting news of Thrashers trades as they occur! As they happen over the next day or so I’ll be updating this blog so keep checkin’ in. As always, if you hear of a noteworthy deal that goes down around the league…post it up!

You are all hearby officially deputized as cyber-reporters for this event, so as news breaks…post it up for us all to see.

We are still just over a day away from Wednesday’s 3:00 pm trade deadline but there has been a few deals that have gone down already. Yesterday, as I’m sure you’ve all heard by now, Nic Havelid was sent packing to the New Jersey Devils in return for Anssi Salmela, a 24- year old Nordic blueliner who played for the Finnish national team. This follows the trade that sent Mathieu Schneider to Montreal for draft picks. Both Havelid and Schneider will be UFAs this summer and their being moved came as no real surprise.

As we have discussed, other Thrashers unrestricted free agents that may be playing elsewhere by Wednesday night include Marty Reasoner and Eric Perrin. The latter has made it very clear that he would welcome a change of venue.

I also have this feeling that Kari Lehtonen could be up on the blocks. Recently the team held talks with his agent and now I come to understand that his parents are in town. I could be reading too much into that, but we’ll see.

Regardless, I would not be stunned if Hedberg or Kari is dealt away. If it’s Moose instead of Kari, then it means the organ-I-zation is comfortable with having Odrej Pavalec on the big-boy squad now and we’ll have a Kari-Opie tandem in the net.

Also, there have been some players of note from around the league that have been placed on waivers today.

The Thrashers do not play Wednesday night, and won’t until they welcome the Habs to Philips Arena on Friday. So, unlike last year when they were in Montreal on the deadline date, there won’t be a mad scramble to call up Wolves players to fill in gaps created by trades.

The following games are on the schedule for tomorrow however…Montreal at Buffalo and Detroit at Colorado.

Last year Dan Kamal posted a blog over on the Thrashers web site indicating his belief that the NHL should schedule no matches on the trade deadline date and I must say that I agree 100% with that. I’d also like to have it where all teams have exactly the same amount of games after the deadline as they go down the stretch. That’s probably not possible given that there are so many teams sharing their home arena with NBA teams…as is the case with the Thrashers…but still, I think it’d be a good goal to strive for.

UPDATE: Mar. 3, 1:17 pm: And as sure as hell is hot…as soon as I posted this, I learn that Eric Perrin has been placed on waivers per the TSN link provided above.

UPDATE: Mar. 4, 9:17 am: Dan Kamal was just on Hockey This Morning, (XM-204) with Scott Laughlin. Kamal indicated that he expects DW to be “very busy” today discussing deals but he does not see any “earth shattering” trades to go down. He also pointed to last Saturday’s come-back win vs. Carolina as something that reminded him of the atmosphere created a few years back when the Thrashers were making playoff runs.

Players Kamal discussed:

Kari: He not only thinks he will NOT be traded, but feels he is a “cornerstone” player to build a team around.

Moose & Opie:He expects there will some interest shown for these two.

Kozlov:Kamal said Kozzy wants to stay and “be a part of the turnaround” and does not think he’ll be dealt today.

Perrin:He’s very disappointed that things did not work out for him this season.

Kovalchuk: Kamal said that “priority ONE is re-signing” Kovy for the Thrashers…and there is no 1-a or 1-b to this.

UPDATE: Mar. 4, 12:30 pm: Don Waddell was a guest on NHL Live with Clement & Fox, ( I’m listening via XM). Not a lot to report but he did express the desire to “change the makeup of the team”. Also, he said that the team needs some more “size up front”, (DUH5). Regarding the goalie situation, he did indicate that Pavs should be ready and that the situation at that position would “probably” be address this summer.

Oh, and when asked about moving Schneids so early before the deadline was because the deal was there for the taking and it was a money saving move.

UPDATE: Mar. 4, 3:00 pm: The 3:00 pm deadline is here and…nothing. This does not mean a deal hasn’t been file with the league office and that, once finalized, we then hear it announced…but as for now….nothing.

:!:  UPDATE: Mar. 4, 3:08 pm: Thrashers send Erik Christensen to the Ducks in return for Eric O’Dell….an 18-year old who was drafted by the Ducks in the 2nd round of last summer’s draft, (39th overall). He is a 6′-0″, 174 lb centerman who shoots right. Currently, O’dell is with the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL and has 14 goals, 18 assists and is a +10 in 29 games.

Salary cap and economy might put a damper on all the excitement. Can a GM be put on waivers?

What’s the rationale (I know we’re talking Waddell and ASG here so rationale does not figure in) of putting Perrin on waivers now? Ummm…I got it, to clear cap space for a mega blockbuster trade, right?

Unless there is some roster rule that a player can’t be put on waivers after the trade deadline why not try to trade him and if unsuccessful THEN put him on waivers?

I would be completely shocked if Waddell traded Lehtonen. We already have nothing left to show for Heatley, and may be in that same boat next year with Kovy.

I wonder if Perrin was waived in order to make room to bring some young forward up from Chicago? I’d be shocked if someone claimed Perrin.

Anyone know our situation with the salary cap floor? We’ve gotta be close with Schneider & Havelid gone (the links to the normal sites are all blocked at work)

I have some breaking news to report…DW has been fired by the ASG!! OK, not really, but wasn’t it nice to hear anyway? I suppose I will be stripped of my cyber-reporters badge for this misinformation and getting everyone’s hopes up. Oh well, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

“why not try to trade him and if unsuccessful THEN put him on waivers?”

All it takes is ~15 calls before you realize nobody wants him…perhaps Waddell has ALREADY tried to trade him and is at the “THEN put him on waivers” portion of your scenario.

Like Bob, I will be surprised if Perrin is claimed.

I would not be surprised if he were claimed by NY Rangers. He was a favorite of Torts. before he left Tampa.

Thrasher_Ed — Tortorella didn’t exactly have good things to say about Perrin when he signed with Atlanta. In fact, he said Perrin could kiss his (butt). I doubt Tortorella is in the mood to bring him to New York just for old time’s sake.

Off topic but how would this be with the ASG???

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have a risk-free offer on season tickets for next season: Lose your job and you’re off the hook.

The Wolves unveiled a new marketing plan Tuesday that’s keenly aware of the struggling economy and their own dwindling fan base.

They’re lowering prices on 95 percent of season tickets in Target Center. The team says the price drop is 44 percent in the upper tier and more than 11 percent in the lower tier.

The Wolves are also guaranteeing a refund of any unused season tickets to buyers who lose their job in 2009.

As for waiving Perrin… after his comments from yesterday, if I’m JA or DW, I don’t want him in the lineup. He’s no longer an asset to the team given his disposition, regardless of whether or not he’s justified in it. It would be better to play Crabb in his place at this point, (and that’s not meant as a slight to Joey).

I agree with ranallo’s 2:35pm suggestion that Waddell is at the “then waive him” point.

Sisu – Yes, that is a very smart, understanding, intelligent move by an ownership that actually has certain grasp on reality given today’s economic situations. It also shows that they care for their loyal customers and value their continued support.

Certainly you are not going to confuse that type of wisdom, market savy and compassion with anything the Spirit Clowns would ever consider…are you?

On a different note, I’d like to put up an under/over shots on goal number for tonight’s game.

I’ll take 42 shots.

Ok, now weigh in with under or over.

I’ll go with the under and say 39 shots (unless it goes to OT, then 44).

For some reason, I think they will be fired up again to play spoiler. I’ll take Atlanta in a 5-4 regulation decision. Kovy with two goals.

Kari Lehtonen straight up for Jeremy Roenick!! We’ve got ourselves a hall of famer who DW is familiar with from the Team USA days. DW claims “Jeremy is the top line player we have been in search of all year long, and I’m sure Kovy will welcome his clubhouse presence.”

Nice ;^)

Nice, another great deal from another team, season tickets for $239.00! And don’t worry, I know ASG has no clue! The ownership got blasted once again by Kincade this afternoon, nice to see some is willing to call out the basketball only owners that run this franchise!

I love it. DW in between periods telling Elliott, “theres 3 ways to build a team, draft, free agency (which he notes gets expensive) and trades” ahhahaahhhahahhahhahhahhahha. Really Don? And how would you know how to do any of those 3 things??? 9 freaking YEARS. No wonder I’m bald, besides the ex wife.

He didnt say much Tony C. Blah, blah, about how they are interested in “hockey deals”, because a lot of guys getting talked about now wont get moved, but probably will in the off season, around draft time. Then about how to “build a team”. An instant classic in my book. The elliott about gave him a h&nd job, as he always does. ahhahahhaha, wonderful. God we are doomed for a long, long time. Nothing better than listening to the loser who’s put us in this spot talk about ANOTHER DRAFT and ANOTHER OFFSEASON with him in charge. UGH. I’m watching thinking how does he keep this job??? UNBELIEVABLE.

Thank God I have suffered through Kari “Fatso” Letemin for the last season! If he is with the Toiletlids next season I will cheer passionately against them. If he is gone I will root for whoever is between the pipes. The exhibition tonight was totally unacceptable and completely unforgivable! A 1-0 lead. Marshmallow goal! A 2-1 lead. Monkey puck goal! Who in Hell knows what the excuses were for the other goals. Again, this fraud son of a betch Finn has NO talent whatsoever. Damn mother (X)! This bestard is going to give up four or more goals per outing. Ship his sorry a## out! I see home guys at least made it close. No team can score more than the LaLa Land golden puke will allow! What a contrast tonight… Saw Lou on the NJ telecast, what a GREAT GM !

He was poised, very confident and addressed things in a most professional manner and how the trade works well for his team. Just the type man who SHOULD be a GM.

Then I saw WORTHLESS, OUTCLASSED, In over his head don waddell.

waddell was not direct, he was VERY timid, and showed NO confidence at all, talked in circles and all stupid darren could say was that
DAMN MOVING FORWARD CRAP !

Just proved to me what a REAL NHL GM is and what a wannabe NHL GM is.

We are a terrible team because of STUPID don waddell, Thanks don for giving us NO hope for the future and next season will be no better than this one !

Also agreed Robert. I saw the collision and him being carried off on the stretcher. It looks scary when someone’s head is duct taped to the stretcher. Regardless of how anyone thinks Marion handled business here in Atlanta, we should all hope he makes a full recovery.

As I type this about wishing players well, I’m reminded of how Zednick spanked us last night. Looks like he recovered nicely from having his neck slashed.
