Thanksgiving week brings big-screen options

Movies are hitting the big screen on Wednesday, ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Look for coverage of the following films in The  Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s special Thursday Movies section and in Friday’s Go Guide. Release dates are subject to change.

“Burlesque” (PG-13)

Your checklist for holiday travel

Travel Leaders, a travel agency network, predicts that more Americans will be flying this holiday season than did the past two years. The agency put together a checklist on how you can prepare.

• Put your houselights on timer to make it appear as if you’re home.

Temporarily suspend mail and newspaper deliveries.

Ask trusted friend or neighbor to keep watch over your home, and give them your contact information.

Charge cell phone or mobile devices before traveling.

Pack strategically and as lightly as possible. Most airlines typically allow just one carry-on bag.

Remember the TSA’s 3-1-1 rules for all liquids and gels you pack in carry-on luggage.

Print boarding passes 24 hours prior to your flight.

Place government-issued ID that matches reservation exactly into wallet or purse you’ll take with you.

Make copies of itineraries and confirmation numbers for airlines, hotels and rental cars and bring them with …

Nominate your local hero

Mary Stevens estimates she's made about 700 personalized quilts for child cancer patients since she began in 1996.

A Canton woman who created quilts for young cancer patients. An Atlanta pastor who raised funds to buy uniforms and toys for an inner-city school. A sixth-grader who led book and clothing drives for kids and seniors in Gwinnett County. These were three of the dozen metro Atlantans singled out last year as AJC Holiday Heroes: People whose selfless actions  were judged the most inspiring among those of more than 200 nominees, Good Samaritans who ranged in age from 8 to 87 and extended helping hands as far away as Iraq and as close as their neighbors’ homes.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution told their stories, and sponsors provided each with a valuable prize. More significantly, perhaps, their stories inspired others to action. An overwhelming number of readers responded with calls and e-mails of praise and financial support for their efforts.
