Faux hamsters and mind-powered games may be snagging the holiday toy spotlight. But action figures remain boy-toy staples. And since I’ve a been an action figure collector dating back to the original “Star Wars” era, I still get giddy when trolling the toy aisles. Here are a few action figure items I’ve found dripping with cool.
Prices are manufacturer’s suggested retail. Items can be found at most major toy retailers and online at sites like Amazon.com.
Figures from the film "Avatar" feature interactive computer technology.
There’s huge anticipation behind what may be director James Cameron’s most groundbreaking film yet. The CGI technology used to create the alien creatures and their homeland is supposedly off the hook. So Mattel stays in step by adding a computer element called i-Tag.
The figures are available in standard 3 3/4-inch ($8.99) size and the more-than-6-inch Movie Masters size ($14.99). Using a webcam, kids can control a 3D model of each figure on their computer. Bad-to-the-bone vehicles and accessories include the RDA Gunship ($26.99) with its whiz-bang blades and blasting projectiles. Creatures like the six-legged Direhorse ($14.99) rock sci-fi style.
Ages: 6 and older.
Although last summer’s G.I. Joe flick was based on the 3 3/4-inch toy line from the ’80s, Hasbro is offering 12-inch versions of some of the characters. And fan favorites Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow each make the literal cut. Both feature crazy posable articulation, and oodles of weapons like swords and guns. Push a button on each of their chests and the figures make battle sounds. Storm Shadow spouts trademark lines, but Snake Eyes does all of his talking by laying down the smack. Both figures come with cloth costumes to boot.
Ages: 4 and older.
Price: $22.99 each.
These 3 3/4-inch characters from the Marvel comic book world boast killer sculpts and nice posability. The Black Costume Spider-Man, for instance, comes with a web-slinging accessory. And each figure includes a file and secret code, which can be used at FuryFiles.com so kids can become official S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Other characters available include Ms. Marvel, Thing and Hand Ninja. Kids also have the opportunity to send off for an exclusive Nick Fury figure. Makes a cool stocking stuffer.
Ages: 4 and older.
Price: $7.99 each.
Boasting a neo-retro style, this may be Batman’s hippest ride yet. Based on the popular animated series, this vehicle transforms from the Batmobile to the Batjet with the push of a button. The wings pop out and retract, and kids can make it fire a quartet of projectiles. Batman: The Brave and the Bold figures, sold separately, fit inside.
Ages: 4 and older.
Price: $38.99
The booty-kicking stars of the Ultimate Fighting Championship get immortalized in action figure form. Jakks is known for its spot-on likenesses and these guys are no exception. Tough guys like Brock Lesnar, Chuck Liddell and Rampage Jackson are ready for some virtual grappling. With 29 points of articulation, the guys can be posed in the kind of mixed martial arts moves that are painful to look at. And each figure comes with a replica fight poster. Put the fighters in the ring by snagging additional playsets like the UFC Octagon ($19.99) or the snazzier Official Scale Deluxe UFC Octagon ($99.99).
Ages: 8 and older.
Price: $9.99 each.

UFC 114 will have a great deal of fits, but none at the magnitude of the bout involving Quinton Jackson and Rashad Evans. This is a single of the most anticipated complement-ups, which will lastly bring location this 30 days.
